Custom button mapping? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guy !
I am not quite sure I am in the right forum, so sorry if I am wrong in choosing this one.
I have an issue with my Nexus 5 where my power button does not work anymore. I have opened and tried to replace the button, with no real success... I was able to power it on by hand and I am wondering if there is any way to map the button (the one that are still working...) of my nexus 5 to custom actions.
Right now I have downloaded an Apps that let me use the volume down to wake up the phone. I have also changed the mapping in the keylayout file to wake the phone. But I am pretty sure if my phone dies or if I turn it off, I will not be able to turn it on. I was wondering if there is any way to map the volume button permanently to the power button, so that I can close and turn on the phone. (mimic the exact behavior of the power button) I am not yet familiar with custom roms (cyanogenmod and stuff), but I have heard that my solution might be somewhere in those custom roms. I have done quite bit of research, but only found solution to wake up the phone, not turn it on or off.
I really need your help with this one.
Thanks a lot in advance !!

No.

Remapping keys requires software
Phone off = no software running = no key remapping.

Mmh ok,
I thought there would be a way to modify something at a lower level than the OS that would allow me to do it.
Another idea then... Is it possible to send a boot message by USB to the phone ? There must be some kind of software running because when it is pugged, an image is shown with the battery charging, so is there any command I could send to boot it up ?
Thanks again !
EDIT : I found a kind of solution to my problem. It does not map the power button to the volume button, but I guess it is the same thing as sending a boot message by USB. By setting the variable oem off-mode-charge to 0 with fastboot, if the phone is powered off, it will boot it up if connected by USB. In case anyone stumble on this post...

[Q] Tight (bad-working) power button. How to fix?

Hello everyone! The problem is power button on my Asus TF. It needs to be pressed veeery hard and still it unlocks screen like only from 4th-5th attempt. That's annoying I would tell.
Is there any possiblity (tool for example) to make TF wake up from volume buttons (like in cyanogenmod 7) ?
Rooted 2.02 Prime ROM
Thx in advance for any help!
UPDATE: Just what I didn't want this issue to be, I now have a hardware power button issue. Not a software one... Guess it's RMA time!
I'm not so sure it is a hardware problem. Let me explain my situation.
My power button doesn't turn on nor turn off the tablet anymore. I cannot do a hard reset with the power problem depressed for 10-12 seconds like I used to be able to do. I'm not rooted otherwise I would use the Quick Reboot app!
I never had a hardware problem with my power button until just recently. After the 3.2.1 ASUS update it appeared that everything was fine, but a rogue app crashed the tablet (can't remember exactly which one, but I think I was installing some Equalizer/Sound apps to help with the speaker volume) and things weren't the same afterward.
I now have no way to power on the TF with the power button and need to attach the charging cable or dock for it to wake up!!!! Very annoying! I also cannot shut it off unless I let the display timeout or attach the dock and hit the lock key!
I've let it run down to 0% battery and then have had it do a (hard) restart, but that allowed the power button to turn on/of the TF for only a while. So I'm thinking it may be a software issue. Perhaps from the dock sleep fix we got from the latest ASUS 3.2.1 update?
Anyone else having issue with their power button? Would rooting help if it is a software issue?
Seems like your problem is not hardware yeah. Sorry for you, that should be rly annoying.
But mine i'm sure is hardware one ((
send it to asus for repair. i had the same problem and got it back
within 5 days. now everything is working well.
Well I did RMA the device today as the power button had become totally non-functional; I couldn't turn on/off the tablet nor could I do a shutdown (hold power button for 4+ seconds) or Hard Rest (hold down power button for 12+ seconds).
This time next week I hope to have my tablet back...

[Q]broken power button.

my skyrocket has a broken power button. it has been finniky for a while now and basically will not boot the device 9/10 times.. with the combination of volume wake and search long hold to shut off screen I can live with it BUT I cannot get it to boot without taking it apart now. I am wondering if there is a software way to automatically have my device turn on if it has the power/is plugged in.
I do have another skyrocket (fully unjiggably bricked) but I think the transplant of the power switch will be to big a task.

Something like that would have to be created. That would need deep code changing, kernel hacking most likely. Just get your hands dirty.
Here's a video to get you started: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKXRQFRH1eU
haven't checked the video so be careful and take your time and don't do anything you're not comfortable with.
Hit the thanks if this helps!!
re: battery issue
Its not at all surprising. Even in my skyrocket, I've experienced the same issue with power button. Finally I had got it replaced and believe me that was really much easier that having to put up with the 1000 failed attempts in trying to get that power button work once. The repair guy actually changed a spake power button within 15 minutes. It wasn't difficult at all .
To switch it on .. Its gonna have to be a pain because it involves a kernel change.. But if you have booted up you can use the software solution, play store these apps .. They are similar to the assistive touch on iPhone .. TouchMe , assistive touch, easyTouch

[Q] Power Button Issue

Recently, I've been having trouble with my phones power button, as in it doesn't work. I can click it all I want and it won't do anything. However, if I ever take the battery out or if the battery dies and I put the phone on the charger it automatically boots up as if I had hit the power button. This really isn't a big deal except I would like to change the rom on it and am not sure how to do so anymore without a functioning power button. You guys have any advice on what the problem might be or how to change the rom without a functional power button?

Download an app called flashify from the market, open the app, select zip file, pick to flash either with TWRP or CWM (depended what you have installed as recovery), then hit yes to reboot.
You could install xposed module and reassign the power button to another physical hardware button and then replace that button with something like LMT launcher. Sounds convoluted but my power button stopped working and now my home button is my power button and I have LMT taking care of the home functionality. But that won't work in recovery sorry.

I had to rip my power button off from the motherboard. If I ever find a button worthy of soldering on I'll send you a link to it. Although I will probably wait until I get a new phone.
I tried using Flashify to flash a 4.4 ROM. Unfortunately, now the phone won't boot. It will get to the black screen that says Samsung SIII, stay there for a little bit and then shut off at which point it tries to turn on again since the power button must be stuck. Any ideas as to how I could fix it from my computer?

Unfortunately, not to my current knowledge. Power button fix's can be troublesome if you don't know how to put it on the motherboard properly.
Personally, I've repaired hundreds of power buttons on an S3.
Just wanted to give you guys an update. I was able to get my phone into boot mode and realized I could swipe right to make selections. I installed a couple old roms i had on the memory card but it would never get past the turn on animation. I finally just downloaded the adb sdk and used it to download a rom onto my phone using adb sideload through the terminal on my mac. I think that's what I did, basically just followed instructions on a screen. Anyways, updated to 4.4 so I'm happy.

[Q] CyanogenMod with Broken Power Button

SO I looked around and diddn't see my particular issue posted already.
My S III has a broken power button: when I gently tap the power button the phone locks, then turns back on, and then shows the power off options as it would if I held the power button down. I dissasembled the phone and tried using the hardware button itself (without the actual plastic button over it) and I had the same issues.
I am broke and really want CM on this phone. As you would expect, If I even try to get into download mode to flash CWM Recovery, the power button forces the device to restart.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a way that I could install CyanogenMod without the use of this button or maybe any other way.
All help is appreciated,
Thanks!
Edit: If it helps, I just noticed that i'm on 4.3. Is there even a way to unlock or roll back the bootloader at this point?
Thanks again.

[Q] My power button is faulty, Can I still root my phone

My power button is not working properly
For example if the screen is off and I press the power button it comes on then goes of again in a second !
I want to know can i root my phone properly ? As i recall reading, you have to select options using the power button while rooting your phone ! What if the damn thing selects a wrong option and i loose me phone ?
buddy, you need to fix that thing is not that hard, since the only way to be in download mode is to use the hard buttons, or using an app, and these apps need root, so that's not what you need, i suggest to fix that button
