Disable LTE on LTE Model - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I only got the LTE model because I wanted the 32 GB storage. I don't actually use the mobile radio at all. However, I'm getting massive battery drain from cell standby (like 35%). I don't even have a SIM card inserted.
Is there a way to disable the LTE aspects of this tablet completely (build.prop mod maybe?)?

Airplane mode?
Toggling everything works after doing so.... At least Wi-Fi and Bluetooth do.

Surprisingly haven't tried that yet. I'll see if that gets rid of the cell standby battery drain.

You can also turn the radio off (without airplane mode) from RadioInfo (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mangelow.network&hl=en)

Same problem here, i Just installed the application radio info and turned off radio signal; lets see over time now.
I don't want to use the airplane mode, I need wifi all day long.
Thanks a lot for advices!

After putting it in airplane mode, turn Wi-Fi on. The cell radio will be off but Wi-Fi will work normally.

No such issues or complaints on this. Were you on wifi in the store?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
No, wifi wasn't enabled in the store. As a matter of fact, i actually tried to use the wifi when 4G begun having data issues and was unable to find any networks.
Mine has randomly disconnected from 4G as well, although the status bar still shows it connected. If I restart the phone it comes back on.
I think it may have something to do with toggling on wifi, but it has also happened after just sitting idle for an extended period, and wont come back on.

Well, I think LG should of did a lot more QC before they even though about dropping this phone on the shelves. There is also a lot of little stuff that this phone is just not doing that my optimus T did flawlessly.
I'd have to agree. I'd recommend having your sim card replaced to see if that helps.

Had the same issue. Out was my sim card. I had been using my original card which wasn't compatible with the new technology. Once I put in the new card it was all good.

Interesting ill tell you how i was able to get the phone. I was actually on flex pay the TM rep ported my number to a new line on our family line. Before that happened i was using a different number that wasnt attached to the sim card i am using now and 4G internet was working correctly on that sim card. But, Now that you have stated your issue. i think im going back to the tmobile store and see if they can get a new sim card for me.
So I'm not the only one with the network issue. seems like as soon as I disconnect from wifi I lose network connectivity. I still see my signal but can't access the internet at all. Totally locks up until I reboot. Which is proving to be a pain in the butt.
I'm going to t-mobile today to get a new sim card to see if that changes anything, mine is currently from Oct 28th 2008. The day the G1 was first released. Can't even read the numbers anymore. But to my knowledge the cards haven't changed. Guess I'll see if this fixes the issue.

That is the way it is designed. When you have WiFi on, it disables your Cellular data to save power. Hence why the 4G icon disappears.
When you disable WiFi, it has to reenable the Cellular Data. So it takes a sec.
Now if it NEVER comes back then there is a problem. But don't expect it to be instantaneous.

When I have wifi on, the 4g icon still comes on and off constantly. When wifi is off, 4g icon still blinks on then off constantly. Still don't have any data. New sim card didn't help either. I go through a battery in about 4 hours because its constantly connecting and disconnecting to the network.
LG sucks.
I'm pretty much convinced this is related to Wifi calling. Try disabling that (this will also help your battery life something serious - take a look at devices logs when wifi calling is enabled.)

When I upgraded my G1 to my G2x, they said they had to give me a new SIM card because the old one won't do 4G. According to the sales person I spoke with, you will need a new SIM card.
Can you keep your old number with a new sim card? My sim card is the same one from my first phone, nokia 3390

Impossible to use BT on Airplane Mode?

The Bluetooth option is greyed out when in Airplane mode. I would like to use my Bluetooth headset.
Is this impossible?
I miss being able to do this when on CM7; I guess I took it for granted.
[Edit]: Put "mode" in title
Isn't airplane mode ment to turn off all the radio chips? This would include wifi, bluetooth and cell radio's.
You are not permitted to use any transmitting device while in flight. That would definitely include BT, WiFi as well as your regular Cell connection.

Sorry, I should have clarified.
I didn't mean specifically on an airplane, just using Aiplane mode.
I work in an area with zero cell reception but I want to listen to podcasts with my Bluetooth headset.
Without Airplane mode, it constantly searches for a cell signal for hours on end, which absolutely destroys the battery.
With CM7, I was able to enable Airplane mode and then turn on Bluetooth to listen to podcasts/music etc.
Is there a way to do this on Sense?
Can't you just drag down your notification bar and click on Quick Settings then check off any Radios you don't want to have in use? It has WiFi, WiFi Hotspot, Mobile Network, Bluetooth, GPS all available to check on or off.
unfortunately not

Isn't that Mobile Network? When I'm on Wifi calling it says Mobile Network is "on" but the cell icon is greyed out. When I turn WiFi off Mobile Network says it is Turning On and the icon is no longer greyed out. If I turn off WiFi and Turn off Mobile Network my 2G/4G signal goes away and I can't get out anywhere using the phone.

No. Turning off Mobile network turns off data only. It's still searching for T-Mobile's cell signal for voice calling.

The mobile network toggle is only for data. When that is off, you can still make phone calls and send texts. Just no data.

It can be done:
1. Open dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#*
2. Tap "Phone settings"
3. Tap "Turn radio off"
The signal indicator will show no service but in fact the cell radio will be turned off, and you will be able to use bluetooth to listen to your podcasts.

Because the Sensation rules!
qHD, 4.3", and soon to be unlocked.
Best qHD phone of the year so far.
I remeber you from the G2x.
I am getting interested more and more....
Nothing wrong with my G2x though
Few reboots here and there and some screen bleed, not enough to bother me but makes me feel ripped off by LG/T-Mobile since I paid full price on it

Yes, I was 99% close to purchasing a G2x since my 2 year upgrade was available in March. But the screen bleeding/rebooting scared me away.
I'm glad I waited. The Sensation blows the G2x away, and it's a MUCH better looking device too.

[Q] Using the Photon Q as a Media Player Only

Hey everyone, new to the Photon Q part of the forums. I got this phone for free, and don't have Sprint in my area. So I would like to use it as a media player (mostly music, maybe a few games, videos, and books).
My question is this: Is there a ROM that can disable the cellular radio only, and leaves the bluetooth and wifi alone? I don't need a fancy, skinned, flashy ROM, just a basic Cyanogen or AOSP ROM that is as stock android as I can get.
Basically I want to turn this phone into a tablet without using "airplane mode."
Is this possible?
Thanks much for any info!
Why don't you just flash CM, enable Airplane Mode, then flip on wifi and BT with quick tiles?
Not sure what else you really would prefer... There's not going to be a ROM out there that specifically disables the cell radio. Does having it on bother you?

I wanted to get as much battery life out of it as possible, I guess. If I enable airplane mode, then turn on the wifi, will it come out of airplane mode and turn on the cellular too?
Actually, I think what you propose isn't that bad really. I can leave it in airplane mode most of the time, then when I want wifi I can just turn it on and do what I need to do, and when I'm done just put it back into airplane mode again. If the cell radio is on at the same time I suppose it won't be that bad.

Well that is very interesting. I still have to fix the phone, that's why I got it for free. But as soon as it's up and running again I will certainly give that a try.
If I could ask another quick question, I was wondering about the micro SD card 32gb limit. Is it really limited? I wanted to put a 64gb card in it for music. Is it hardware limited, or was it a limit in the stock ROM?

OK, thanks for the info.
Sorry for taking this thread off topic, but I have a couple more questions and I didn't want to make a whole new thread for them.
I finally got the phone fixed and am getting ready to install clockworkmod and a probably CM 10.1.
First thing is I cannot figure out whether this phone is GSM or CDMA. It's Sprint, and from what I understand Sprint is CDMA, but both on the back and in "about phone" it says it's an xt897, not xt897c. A regular xt897 is GSM, and an xt897c would be CDMA, right? In the network settings I have the option to use CDMA and GSM networks.
Which version of android should I install?
Second, would I get an unlocked bootloader by installing clockworkmod recovery?
Thanks
The Phone is dual standard, is both CDMA and GSM capable (although the stock phone lacks a proper sim slot).
And the stock ROM is able to manage either kind of networks.
BTW (usually) the phone is used only in one of them.
Americans will use CDMA and rest of the world users (most of it anyway) will use the GSM capabilities.
Only the US citizen who travel in Europe or other GSM lands can take advantage of a dual standard phone.
So, some of the aftermarket roms are built in single standard configuration, and are aimed to the different usage scenarios.
Obviously, for an usage like the one are you asking for, you couldn't care less about the radio standard, just use the rom you like, and (if you want), use tasker alone or tasker+secure settings plugin to turn off automagically the cellular radio, when the smartphone is booted.
Second, would I get an unlocked bootloader by installing clockworkmod recovery?

The opposite way.
You have to unlock the phone to flash a proper recovery
OK, thanks for the info.
I unlocked the phone, which was quite time consuming but I figured it out.
Then I installed clockworkmod, which went perfect.
Then I installed Skrilax_CZ's version of CM 10.1, and it works perfectly.
Thanks for all the help, guys. Much appreciated.

Keep having data issues on my N5

So I had this issue with 4.4.2,.3, and now .4 radios. Sometimes when I switch from WIFI to LTE or from No Signal to 5 bars of LTE, data does not reconnect and I either have to wait or reboot the phone. Its extremely annoying. I am on Stock ROM rooted with Franco Kernel and currently on 4.4.3 with 4.4.4 radio. Anyone know whats going on?

Also, I do get 3-5 bars of LTE in status bar but when I try to accessing internet I get nothing, be it in Chrome or any another app
well, its a known issue on the n5. it doesnt affect me much, as i reconnect to lte very fast and immediately have data. but, every once in a while, itll show me that im connected, but data stops flowing. at that point i turn on airplane mode, let it disconnect, then reenable it. data always starts flowing immediately after that.

in feb or march, there was a few week period that it happened 3-4 times a day. thankfully it didnt go on. because of that, i assumed it was a tmobile issue, with them constantly upgrading their network in my area. but now i just dont know(lol).
It could be a tower issue. I have also seen weird things where it tries to connect and when I look at the actual field test app it shows it is on say LTE but reports in Android as searching for signal. A quick test shows the APN may be at fault. I know it sounds weird but for me on Cricket if I delete the APN LTE goes away. I put it back and LTE magically appears.
Also when I had Sprint I noticed there was a weirdness in that you could have an APN for EHRPD EVDO as a bearer or LTE as a bearer but not both it seemed so it would flawlessly connect to LTE but not EHRPD or vice versa.
If you know the APN is right then it may be a tower issue. Some towers may not broadcast LTE near you but ones slightly further away do so the phone may not connect right away.

Nexus 5 - Dropping network

My S3 died last week so I purchased a Nexus 5 and I've had nothing but issues with it since.
In 6 days it has dropped network about 10 times and just displays 'Emergency calls only' until I reboot it. It seems to be completely random.
Twice it has done it whilst streaming over 4g from YouTube, but it has also just done it whilst dormant overnight. I woke up the other day to find 'Emergency Calls Only' despite it being fine when I went to sleep.
After searching google I can now see that this seems to be a common issue with Nexus 5.
I'm seriously considering taking it back and getting something else, although I'd love to keep it if it works properly. Does anyone know the cause of the issue or have any workarounds? As I use the phone for out of hours calls for work, I can't afford to have it drop network whilst in my pocket and me not know about it...

OK so I tried re-inserting the sim but still dropping network. The weird thing is that it has done 3 times in the exact same location on my way to work whilst I've been streaming. It's as if it loses 4g signal in that location but then fails to switch to 3g and instead I get left with no network connection / no bars (empty triangle). It then fails to pick up the network again until I reboot (tried re-registering on network and airplane mode on/off).

OK so re-inserted sim and spoke to O2 who said settings are ok. However, it did it again this morning in the same location. That's 12 times in 8 days I've had the phone, 4 of those in the same location (give or take 100m).
I think I'll take the phone back before unlocking bootloader and trying a new radio, but any other suggestions before I do that ? Factory reset ?

I never had it with my S3 in 2 years, using the same route into work every day. I can't remember my S3 ever dropping network once....or if it did it picked up the network again automatically. Only difference was I wasn't on LTE with that.
It's not just that location though, it's happened 8 other times in other place nowhere near. I only made note of the same location because it's where I get off the tram coming into work. This morning I wasn't streaming or anything, it was just in my pocket, but I'd installed light flow to audibly alert me when it lost connection.

Maybe set it to 3g instead of LTE, or else RMA/send the device

Yeah I've seen suggestions about changing to 3g, but that defeats the object of me having an LTE phone and paying for 4g service. Thanks, I think I'll take the phone back. My mate has an N5 and although he said he'd experienced it in the past, he hasn't since being on 4.4.3 / 4.4.4

OK so I've been and swapped my N5 for a new one...they also gave me a new sim. Fingers crossed !!
I guess I am too late to add anything but anyway here is what I did and may be of help. After pulling out the sim, use a pencil eraser and rub it across the contacts on the sim card. If the contacts somehow get too much oil residue from finger tips or other "impurities" on the contact, you will get incomplete contacting sometimes and it works other times. The eraser will clean those contacts up for a better dirt free connection. When I was a electronics tech in the hi tech field, I fixed many issues that were just contact problems and the eraser did the trick. I have had this same problem on my other phones (blackberries and androids) and it seemed to work.

Thanks. Either the new phone or the new sim seem to have fixed the issue. I've not had a network disconnect since (been 5 days now).
