Impossible to use BT on Airplane Mode? - HTC Sensation

The Bluetooth option is greyed out when in Airplane mode. I would like to use my Bluetooth headset.
Is this impossible?
I miss being able to do this when on CM7; I guess I took it for granted.
[Edit]: Put "mode" in title

Isn't airplane mode ment to turn off all the radio chips? This would include wifi, bluetooth and cell radio's.

You are not permitted to use any transmitting device while in flight. That would definitely include BT, WiFi as well as your regular Cell connection.

Sorry, I should have clarified.
I didn't mean specifically on an airplane, just using Aiplane mode.
I work in an area with zero cell reception but I want to listen to podcasts with my Bluetooth headset.
Without Airplane mode, it constantly searches for a cell signal for hours on end, which absolutely destroys the battery.
With CM7, I was able to enable Airplane mode and then turn on Bluetooth to listen to podcasts/music etc.
Is there a way to do this on Sense?

Can't you just drag down your notification bar and click on Quick Settings then check off any Radios you don't want to have in use? It has WiFi, WiFi Hotspot, Mobile Network, Bluetooth, GPS all available to check on or off.

unfortunately not

Isn't that Mobile Network? When I'm on Wifi calling it says Mobile Network is "on" but the cell icon is greyed out. When I turn WiFi off Mobile Network says it is Turning On and the icon is no longer greyed out. If I turn off WiFi and Turn off Mobile Network my 2G/4G signal goes away and I can't get out anywhere using the phone.

Try going into phone info *#*#4636#*#* and turning radio off, there is a button. See if you can activate bluetooth then.

No. Turning off Mobile network turns off data only. It's still searching for T-Mobile's cell signal for voice calling.

The mobile network toggle is only for data. When that is off, you can still make phone calls and send texts. Just no data.

Ahh ok..my bad..Perhaps the other post about turning off the radio will help. Odd that I couldn't make a call at all even though I get 2G signal here with Mobile Network off. I'll have to peek into that.

Fo sho... Search the market for the dev Philipp Mangelow. Download his app "Network". Boom goes the dynamite.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App

It can be done:
1. Open dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#*
2. Tap "Phone settings"
3. Tap "Turn radio off"
The signal indicator will show no service but in fact the cell radio will be turned off, and you will be able to use bluetooth to listen to your podcasts.

Because the Sensation rules!
qHD, 4.3", and soon to be unlocked.
Best qHD phone of the year so far.

I remeber you from the G2x.
I am getting interested more and more....
Nothing wrong with my G2x though
Few reboots here and there and some screen bleed, not enough to bother me but makes me feel ripped off by LG/T-Mobile since I paid full price on it

Yes, I was 99% close to purchasing a G2x since my 2 year upgrade was available in March. But the screen bleeding/rebooting scared me away.
I'm glad I waited. The Sensation blows the G2x away, and it's a MUCH better looking device too.

bad signal related to the radio version?

So I decided to Root, S-Off and flash Coredroid v4.7 on my Inspire, but I leave it with the stock radio (12.39.60.19P_26.06.04.06_M), but the signal seems pretty weak even on places where my Nexus one was at full strength my Inspire seems to only be able to grab 2 bars at much, and the WiFI connection seems week too, on my N1 I used to be able to get full signal from more than 20 meters, but my Inspire seems to lose it after 15 meters.
I read some posts and other blogs/forums and some attribute those issues to the radio version, so I hope someone can give me an opinion and tell me if I should Update the radio and to which version if so.
Thanks in advance.
Try this
For phone signal, try *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer. This will bring up a screen that has 5 options, I went to phone and scroll to the bottom. Under the preferred network I changed it to GSM only as its an AT&T phone anyway, I was getting 1 or 2 bars at home and was missing calls left and right. after setting this, back out and shut the phone down then restart. I have all 4 bars now. It would also eat the battery, mine was on WCDMA preferred and I think it was searching for that signal constantly. There is a screen for wifi also but there is nothing adjustable there.

Odd that it would have WCDMA preferred as default. I just adjusted this as well and it improved the signal in my office. Good catch.
Gsm only does not work for me, my lame carrier runs on gsm but their mobile internet runs on their 3g so I need to connect to both. Setting it to wcdma/gsm auto seems to have improved the signal

Hey all, I'm on AT&T running radio 26.06.04.06_M. Any specific recommendations? GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL) seems to give me the best service based on bars, but that doesn't necessarily mean much (I'm on an HSDPA connection with 3/4 fluctuating right now).
Also, I think I might not have HSUPA enabled with this radio, I'm only getting .56Mbps upload and around a 2.79 download (Whereas on standard 3G with my old iPhone I typically pulled around a 1.2). HSDPA is without a doubt enabled and it shows that I'm connected on that network, but is there a better radio I should try out?

4G "Idle" ????

Does anyone else see their 4G connection go to idle after a while ?
If I turn on 4G, after not very long at all, my icon goes to one with 3 dots, and when I check my 4G network settings, it says 4G Networks --> Sprint --> Idle.
I have no connection whatsoever to the internet, and therefore have no push gmail/fb/twitter etc.
This does not happen on 3G/Wifi.
this can't be normal right ?
That is normal. Idle for 4g is the same as your send and receive arrow animation on 3g not doing anything. It is connected but there is nothing to send or receive, so it is "idle". I've stay connected to irc for hours on end with 4g and it "idled" constantly.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Hmm. I'm not sure I agree.
When my connection is on idle, I get no email or anything.
If I go to wifi or 3G, it instantly pushes through emails.
I tested this by sending myself an email when it was idle. It didnt come through. Turn off 4G, and go to 3G, and it goes through.
This may actually not work correctly and a request from gmail push system does not wake the 4G WiMax connection properly. It works ok when the phone is requesting internet but not the other way around. I think they'll need to fix that eventually with a radio update.
Call and report. That's the only way they'll do it.

Was on KushDeck. Looks like I'm getting the same thing on CM7 as well.
Sent an email from my work email to my Gmail account. My Chrome browser got it almost immediately, and my phone is sitting on idle with nothing.
UPDATE.
6 minutes and counting. Nothing on my phone. Still on idle.
Is it something to do with my settings perhaps ? It seems to be fine on 3G ?
OK, I'm getting somewhere.
And I can sort of see where the issue is, I think.
When I'm on 3G, my phone signal is green, and my 3G bars are aklso green (connected to Google)
Push works when I'm like this.
When I'm on 4G, my phone signal is white (not connected to Google) therefore there is no push signal..
I'm tested this thoroughly this morning and I'm convinced this is the case.
This happens on all my ROMS (CM7/Kushdeck and Soju)
I'm going to call SPrint.

[Q] Wifi and 4g On At The Same Time Normal?

Just picked up my htc sensation 4g last night. My old phone was a galaxy, and when I got in range of wifi, the 4g would turn off. Sometimes on the sensation it stays on, or comes on from time to time while in range of wifi.. Is this normal, if not, is there a way to fix it?
I think this normal due to the wifi issue it could be choosing the best connection the only way u will have true control is by turning the 4g off, etc

I stand corrected. I just noticed that my Sensation that both the 4G and wifi icon was displayed at the same time.
It happenned when after I openned the MyAccount app. This app does not work over wifi so phone automatically switched on the 4G radio in order for the app to work. Once you leave the app it remains running in the background which causes both icons to remain displayed.
So if you use this app (or maybe any other app that does not work over wifi) this could be the cause for both icons to be on.
What I don't know is if it is actually using both wifi and 4g at the same time or does it turn the 4G completely off until the app requiring it is exited.
Bump.
I have the same issue. I use wifi exclusively at home, but sometimes seemingly at random I see a cell connection icon in the notification bar as well. Today it's been on for several hours. I have not used My Account in weeks. When I look in Task Manager no apps are running.
I assume there's some app that "needs" to connect via a cell tower, but don't know how to identify it. Can this be blocked, and if so would that just cause some other issue? Seems like a really unnecessary battery drain, but not a huge problem far as I can tell, just odd.

Yeah, I just had it happen to me again a few days ago but this time it was while using the Market. I wanted to purchase an app and noticed that now there is an option of adding it to your mobile carriers bill instead of a credit card so I opted to added to to my bill. Well I am assuming so that t-mobile needed a direct connection with my phone for billing so of course the 4G icon all of a sudden pops on.
In short I am saying I am sure it happens when certain apps are running that need cellular data vs WiFi. Don't know if you can block it but if you do those apps will not perform correctly. Also there are many other things running other than just what the stock task manager shows you.

I understand some apps apparently need a cell connection for some reason, perhaps it's location tracking, but mine's been connected for 4 hours straight today. Hard to imagine there's that much data being transferred on a 4G connection. Really seems like something is hung. Just tried putting my phone is airplane mode, then back to regular mode. When I turned it back on the 4G icon appeared for a few seconds then went off and is staying off. So looks like a force interrupt unstuck whatever it was.

Airplane mode is a feature of the phone and turns off all radios. You can hold the power button and choose airplane mode or use the quick toggle in the notification window. Since it sounds like you may be in an area with weak 4G, you can also use an app called Phone Info to set it to CDMA auto (PRL) under Device Information. You can also change it back to LTE/CDMA/EvDO if you want it to switch as normal.
With the Verizon S3, is there the need to do *228 (or *22899) ? I did this every so often on my old HTC Incredible.

Doesn't work on LTE devices. A reboot essentially does the same thing. Some have recommended pulling the battery with the phone on, removing the sim card for about 30sec and then putting everything back in.
Thanks, I know what airplane mode is, wasn't sure where the APN setting was. I will look in to phone info though.

Are you guys also experiencing the "No Sim Card" and "No Network Connection" issues?
Or is this an entirely different issue?
When this phone goes to 3g, it does seem extra bad on how long it takes to switch back to 4g. i have areas where i live where it goes to 3g when going in between hill (less than a 50 foot stretch) and it will not go back to 4g for over 10 minutes if i dont manually do it. Not to mention my LTE never goes above 10 mbps on the best days
Somewhat related...If you use Anycut to create a shortcut to IOTHiddenMenu, enter the ##DATA# Menu, edit. Under "Advanced", there is an LTE toggle, under "Other" > "HDR/1X" you can set the phone mode, and then under "Other" > "LTE APN Settings" you can somewhat modify the APN settings, reset and discard. If it asks for a password, it's 000000.
I gave these a try. I'm trying to find a way for my phone to favor 4G when there's a 4G signal, no matter how weak.
Yesterday I did a test, 3G with 3 bars vs 4G with 0 to 1 and 4G had consistently faster download speeds and shorter ping times. The upload varied from similar to 3G to slower.

probably easier said than done. The phone info app can force LTE but you lose voice and text.
Ya I found that out yesterday when testing speeds. I went to send a text then make a call and no luck
Otherwise 4G service where I live could be excellent at one spot then a mile away no service. If I had excellent 4G consistently I'd consider GoSMS which I believe has the option for data text and also a separate VoIP app
Ah well hopefully something will be figured out eventually. With a strong 4G signal 4G is considerably faster and more consistent than my 20mbps home broadband

I've had similar issues with my network. I had no 4G in 4G areas, but mainly my wifi would disconnect randomly and 3G also dropped to 1X a lot. I ended up having to send it back and get another one. So far no issues. Also the new ones have an "Updated" sticker on them. I think it was just a software update they applied, but I never got the OTA on my old phone.

Not sure if anyone will have the same luck I have with the "Phone Info" app, but with it I was able to get my 4g service back and my phone is functioning normally again. Just open the app, select Device Information and scroll down to "Set preferred network type" and select "LTE/CDMA/EvDo" then get out of the app.. 4g should return shortly there after. When I looked at it, my device was set to "GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)"

Poor reception on S3 somewhat fixed

So let me start off by saying I have pretty bad reception at home with 4g.
I had an iphone 4 with a 3g range extender before I got the S3 and it worked great.
Found a free app called phone info
Went in under device information, selected cdma auto (PRL). I restarted my phone.
I now have 5 bars and perfect clarity.

I am usually about 2 bars where I am. Making this switch didn't change my number of bars or dbm. I'm glad it worked for you however.
I expect by making this change, you are basically downgrading to 3G until you set it back.
If you have a network extender for 3G then that's the fix. Not turning on thst option.

It switches to 3G

I am usually about 2 bars where I am. Making this switch didn't change my number of bars or dbm. I'm glad it worked for you however.
I expect by making this change, you are basically downgrading to 3G until you set it back.

I am downgrading to 3G and my range extender only works for 3G not 4g. Verizon claims to not have a 4g extender yet.

Not exactly. The phone will stay in 4g with one bar even if 5 bars of 3G is available. So forcing the phone to switch to 3G is the only way I got the call quality I needed to make calls in my house
What's the make and model of this range extender?

Unstable 3G performance
So I've had my S3 for a little over a month and have noticed the poor call reception that people have mentioned, especially in my office building. My old droid 2 global never had a problem, but when I receive calls on the S3 i have to walk to A window down the hall to keep the call from dropping. In an attempt to stay on the more stable 3G coverage in the area I installed phone tools and forced 3G. The problem I have now is that when I'm out of the office or house and not on wifi, I pull the phone put of my pocket to check something and there is no data connection at all now. Even if I open my browser and try to force a connection I get nothing. If I set the radio back to include LTE I have a reliable data connection everywhere but my calls are still poor.
Am i missing something when setting the phone to be 3G only? Thanks.
Ok i tried that phone info program and set it tup cdma auto or whatever, and no improvement. How do i get back to stock? I tried setting to lte/cdma/evdo but it does not stick. I tried uninstalling the program and the phone would stick to 3g. Help!

Just download the phone info app and switch it back to lte/CDMA/evdo when you switch it turn off the radio at the bottom and wait for a couple secs then turn it back on

I wish Verizon and Samsung would just get together and try and resolve why their phones don't work well on Verizon's network. I figured they'd learn what they did wrong with the Nexus - pretty upset they never resolved it with the S3. I'm hoping the DNA/DLX from HTC doesn't have this issue. I liked the Samsung S3 in just about every way but the reception is wretched compared to Motorola phones.
yea I agree...the reception is awful. Literally can't use the phone for business. Everything else about it is awesome though

I'm missing something. How does 3g/4g have anything to do with your calls? The phone works with data turned off. Are you using Skype?

I've pretty much given up on Samsung and Verizon as much as I love the phone as a PDA, as a phone it sucks.

It has to do more with your location I think..I work in the tri-county are of Detroit and my reception is excellent. Had a Cappy on ATT before my GS3 on Verizon and could not even get a signal in our office building..now on Verizon I'm at least 4 bars and full strength pretty much everywhere else..

It seems to have to do with the technology of the Verizon towers in your area. In LA with a motorola phone I lock on no problem and get great reception. With the S3 you'll switch from 4 bars - drop the call and switch back to 4 bars even when stationary. Motorolas don't have that issue with Verizon's network. I know several people with the S3 including people in CT and TX - all having the same issue on Verizon's network.
