(HELP) nexus 5 emergency calls only imei OK - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear experts,
I have got a nexus 5 of a friend, which has network issue. I have flashed all factory images and almost all modems, but it still gives me emergency calls only and my imei is ok. Network state shows not connected. I am a Note 2 user and had Same issue in my Note 2 too. But it was solved by patching modem with zulumans modem patcher. I tried patching modems but there is no modem.bin in the modem folder. I tried to change the radio band using *#*#4636#*#* but it only shows US band.
Please help me. Thanks.

I am having same problem. My nexus 5 was working fine till 3 days ago when all of a sudden there was no signal. It shows my network name but says "no service". I thought it could be sim related issue and got it replaced. Still it shows the same.
I havent tried flashing modems/radio.
One funny thing is, i tried putting another sim of a different provider. It showed signal for a minute or so and then dropped (shows no service).
When I scan for network it is able to see all the available network but then it doesnt register on a network.
I'm from India and I have BSNL connection.
Tried flashing kitkat and 5.0 fatory images...nothing happened,
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP
!

Bump

One other strange thing is when i tried a sim of another network it got registered!!! but then i was not able to make calls. I tried calling the number from another phone and it said the phone was switched off. I don't understand.
1) Is it a prob with antenna? 2) or the motherboard 3) or sim (which is unlikely as it is working just fine on my new oneplus one). Please someone help...

Does it never occur to anyone to backup efs and store on a card or LT

emergency calls only (Motherboard Problem)
Emergency Calls Only, This is due to substandard nexus hardware quality, as around the world all nexus 5 phone owner face the same problem, google is silent on their fault, i will never buy nexus phone in future, or faulty upgrade destroys our phone hardware,

My nexus in block by t mobile well my iemi is I think I want to unblock it just shows no signal

My IMEI still shows up and I can connect to WIFI and bluetooth. The only problem is I can't get a signal, not 2G or 3G (even LTE)
This started happening out of nowhere, I tried taking out the sim, factory resetting, wiping caches, changing the APNs, restarting the phone, and I even put the sim in a new phone (It got signal).
If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears! What's the point of this amazing phone if I can't call people with it?
How long did you have the phone before this happened? Did you dial *#*#4636#*#* to check the phone info and change the network type?
I had a similar issue, but I think mine was a lot worse due to a dirty flash. I ended up having to do a fastboot recovery to restore it to factory.

What service are you with? I had this same exact issue a week ago with an LG G2. My Sim card would work in my Nexus 5 but wouldn't work in the G2.
After numerous factory resets I eventually called Metro PCS (my carrier) and I was told that whenever I put my Sim Card into a new phone I must always contact them and give them the new IMEI # so that the phone can work.
The Metro PCS rep claimed that they have a feature that disables the Sim from working in an unauthorized phone. I guess its to help with theft.

Hi, were you able to fix your issue? I am having the same exact issue and have done all troubleshooting I can do on my own but still nothing works.
If you have a method of fixing this please share.
Thanks,

I know this is really OLD!!!!
but i just had the same issue today
with a NEXUS 5 running stock marshmallo 6.0.1 with the latest patches
, and yes... is not the phone is the carrier
MetroPCS do IMEI lookup
i had another phone before the NEXUS 5
so it is no just matter of swapping the SIM card from one phone to the other
you need to call CS and you told them that your phone is not registering on the network
and that you just swapped phones
So they ask you for the IMEI of the "new" phone
and your SIM card #
you reboot your cell
and VOILA!
now the phone registers in the network
Yes, Metro do IMEI authentication

Nexus 5 No Signal

Afternoon, sitting with a dead nexus 5 in my possession, iv tried multiple things such as:
Going back to android 4.4, 4.4.2 and 4.4.3.
Tried radios from different versions
IMEI is still valid and not blacklisted
SIM works in other devices
Phone is able to scan for network
Phone has dbm values for antenna
Clearning Cache
Flashing custom rom and kernel.
Weird things happen such as: If i insert a new sim card the phone will connect to that sim card for about a minute then disconnects again.
Would the TOT file for my phone work in giving it a full factory reset or not using the LG Flash Tool.
Have the exact same problem. Just got my phone back from LG repair and it's still doing it so sending it back again. I can stand right next to friend who has nexus 5 with same service and he has full lte. Had the same thing happen with me reinserting sim card. I would get lte bars then the signal just dies and I get nothing.
Is the APN right? It may have signal but just say unknown.

Signal/Network problem

Hi guys,
I've been having this problem with my N5.
Its a d820 model, unlocked and rooted.
I have no signal, cant register to the network either.
I can use wifi with no problem too.
I changed the micro sim card with other carriers, same issue. I asked for a new micro sim to my carrier too (not cut), but still getting the same problem.
It's worth mentioning that the micro sim works flawlessly. Im using it everyday on an HTC One S and signal and data works perfectly.
When I first get the simcard on the N5, it asks for a reboot, after it comes back up, it shows strong signal, but I can't make any call or receive, no messages either.
After a few minutes, the signal goes down and it shows only emergency calls.
Going into mobile networks and searching for my carrier takes quite some time, but no matter how many times I try to select my carrier,it always comes back with not able to register in the network.
I did a factory reset, and went back to stock, and then performed the system updates to 4.4.4.
I flashed a couple of radios as well, but no luck.
The IMEI shows well, and its the same that shows on the box, so I guess no problems there with a corrupt IMEI.
Has anyone else had any problem like this? Any suggestions?
I've been reading some threads here, and I still have to try a different kernel/ROM, but if anyone else knows of a similar situation, I would appreciate any suggestions.
May be it has something to do wid preferred network...
If u use 3g go to dialpad
Type
*#*#4636#*#* phone info
Select modem as wcdma only...
If u use lte select lte only... See if this works
I think I already tried that, but cant remember for sure
Will give it a shot, thanks
Is the phone second hand?
Have you checked if the IMEI is blocked by the network?
sounds like you bought a used phone that has been blacklisted. if blacklisted, your phone wont work on any US carrier, and many Canadian carriers.
Yes its a second hand phone, and I don't know if it is blacklisted on USA, but Im in South America, so that shouldnt be a problem
And there are no carriers here working with N5 so they cant blacklist the IMEI either
(This doesnt mean that the phone doesnt work here, actually, my wife has another N5 that works like a charm here)

the carriers dont have to work with the n5 to blacklist it. in other words, they can blacklist any phone that connects to their network. as soon as you connect to the network, they know your imei and other info about your phone. anyways, they blacklist your imei, so when your phone tries to connect, it cant. the agreement that carriers have in the US and Canada, could possibly be for all of the americas, or, in south america, they could have their own blacklist.

googling, i found that carriers worldwide are sharing blacklists.
The GSMA, an international association of wireless carriers, also keeps a database that wireless carriers worldwide could check to prevent stolen phones from being reactivated on their networks.

I will check on that, I think I can just call my carrier and ask if that IMEI is blacklisted or not

yup, thats the best thing to do. the people that first answer the phone, customer service, probably wont be able to help, maybe someone in tech. or, use this website to check(there art other sites as well).. http://swappa.com/esn
Well I just checked. IMEI not blacklisted on my carrier, also checked with swappa, not blacklisted either.
I used the *#*#4636#*#* to select wcdma as well as other options there, but still no go.
Also, under Mobile network settings, changed the preferred network type to LTE, 3G and 2G, but no luck
Tried Choose automatically the network, but still getting the message that its unable to register to the network right now and that I should try again later
I guess Im left with flashing some other ROM/kernel to see if it helps, unless someone has any other suggestions

call your provider first, problem can be on their end.

also, what kind of nexus 5 is it, a d820 or d821? it would make a difference signal-wise. ones for north america, ones for europe. honestly, i have no idea which you would need http://www.phonearena.com/news/Differences-between-the-two-Nexus-5-models-D820-and-D821_id48985
I don't know if the problem is with the carrier, since I'm using the very same simcard with another phone and I have data and network with no problem.
The phone is d820, but I know it works here (my wife has the same one), network 2g and 3g work well here, LTE is the only thing that won't work here with this phone but I don't care about that
I'll keep looking just in case, and I guess tomorrow I'll flash different ROM

If the problem is wid radio flashing a different rom won't matter ..
Have u tried flashing a factory image ?
I know flashing a new ROM wont help with radio, but I've seen that using *#*#4636#*#*, going into phone information and then Select Radio Band, gives me an error and force closes.
I've seen some threads about that, and someone saying that it was working on a CM ROM, so I was thinking of trying that in order to be able to select the radio band and see if that helps.
About the factory image, yes, I used the google images to go back to stock, and then performed the system updates.
Well I flashed Slim Rom, and was able to get into *#*#4636#*#* to change radio band. Tried them all, no change.
Played around with the preferred networks and no luck either.
I'm officially out of ideas, but I'll keep digging around to see what I can find.
Any suggestions welcome.
Also, I know that there is a known issue with the GPS signal on some Nexus 5, and there are a few videos on Youtube showing how to fix it (basically opening the back of the phone, and sticking a piece of paper under the connector).
Does anyone know if there is something similar happening with the radio? Does anyone have a photo of the phone showing which part would be the antenna?
One additional thing I noticed.
If I switch, or just take out and reinsert the micro sim, the phone asks for a reboot. After doing that, when the phone boots up, I see I have network (full bars), going into mobile operators, I can see my carrier, and I can register too. But I cant make or receive any calls or messages.
During this 10 minutes that I have this sort of fake signal, if I go into *#*#4636#*#* and phone info, I can see my carrier, but it doesn't show my phone number. Weird.
Lg nexus 5 network issue
i am facing the same issue with exus 5 .In my hometown in India, the phone simply shows "Emergency calls only" and shifts to normal working mode with full network coverage once i travel to other parts of my state (parts which probably has a better signal strength ,i dont know ).i have tried out changing the sim card and a factory data reset ..Both didnt help ..

Has anyone been able to track down the issue and get it resolved? I'm facing the same situation, and almost taking it to an authorized LG support so that they can change the motherboard.

[Q] Vodafone SIM not connecting to network on my Nexus5

So my Vodafone SIM gets detected when inserted but doesnt connect to network.
On searching networks it doesn't show up either.
Weird facts:
My SIM works fine on my Nexus 4 and other Nexus 5 (only 1 I've tested on)
Other SIMs work fine on my Nexus 5.
Tried various ROMs and radios, but same result.
Another weird fact:
Once on roaming I had connected the SIM to my N5 and the moment I left my state it got connected to network and as entered back it stopped again.
SIM has been replaced, Vodafone blames the phone and I don't know what else to try out.
Any thoughts?

In settings can you see your IMEI number ? if you don't (like mine showing 0) you never get any signal , you've got to send it back, it's bricked then...

IMEI is good, its works fine on other SIMs and mine works fine on other phones too as mentioned in OP.
What's your current network mode in *#*#4636#*#*? Try any of the modes but CDMA (WCDMA is fine).

Can't call anymore since the motherboard swap

Hallo everyone,
What's up: my Nexus 5 can't make any type of calls.
The story behind: in march the memory chip of my Nexus 5 died, so I let it repair from the official LG support (it was still under guarantee). They changed the whole Motherboard and send me it back. At the same time, I received the new SIM card from my mobile network operator (o2 Germany) because I moved from prepaid to contract, but I still keeped my number.
Since the first day with the repaired Nexus and the new SIM, the LTE worked without problem and I could surf, but I couldn't make a single call. I talkd with the o2 Germany support, and they toldt me that It could have been a problem related to the number porting. After a few weeks the porting was officially completed, but I couldn't still make any call. Then after many weeks and many support calls, I had a so simple Idea...just let's test my o2 SIM on my old Smartphone (an HTC Desire)...and finally I could make a call! So I'm sure that the problem doen't lies on the operator or the SIM.
What's happen exactly with the Nexus 5 and the o2 SIM (here the Video): the LTE Network is full available, I call a number and appears "Dialing" (sometimes the screen turns black without any reason until I press the power button, but not this time), after seconds of absolute no sounds it shows the error "Cellular network not available". Of course I tried to call different numbers, but the problem persist and it still remains, even if I use another SIM from another operator.
I'm really concerned that maybe the problem lies on the Nexus 5 hardware, maybe the antenna, after a bad repair...but that's just what I suppose.
I'm looking forward for your opinions and support, thanks a lot!
Have you taken any steps to troubleshoot?
Seems the issue is the N5, as the SIM is working, but it is unclear where the problem lies. Have you checked the APNs, do they match the ones on HTC device? Maybe try reflashing factory image? Factory reset?
You said LTE is working, so it is not antenna, I think it is a software issue. Start by checking APN.
Thanks for your answer, I will consider the antenna as functional
I have been checking the APN Settings with the same o2 SIM on the two different devices (Nexus 5 and HTC Desire), they are identical, but the Nexus 5 got some extra settings.
As usual, with the Nexus 5 I can't call, but if I move the SIM on the HTC Desire it does. Just using the same dafault APN configuration. Those are the suggested configuration on the official o2 Website, but I would just stick with the default ones that already works (on Desire).
Any suggestion?
I would do a factory reset just a last choice, because I got tons of apps and data that needs time to be reinstalled.
Another info: the LTE Network on the Nexus 5 sometimes disappears, and then appears again.
Bump, any Idea about this problem and how I could fix it?
Hallo, I'm asking again for your support
those last weeks I couldn't get rid of the problem with the calls, and I'm still clueless about how I can fix it. At the end of the month the 2 years guarantee expires, so I need to hurry up.
Summary: SMS sometimes comes later als expected, sometimes LTE Data doen't work, most of the times I can't make calls.
What I have already done:
- already moved my main SIM (o2 Network) from my Nexus 5 on an old device, and there I have no problems at all, and I can make all the calls that I want.
- already checked the APNs, they are all on defaults settings and are ok.
- already tryed to use a fully functional SIM from another network operator (TIM Italy) on my Nexus 5, even if the Network is fully available I can't make any single call.
At this point, I'm pretty sure, that the o2 SIM and the o2 Network itself works fine.
Today I have done a factory reset after a full backup on my Nexus 5. With all default an no extra app there's no improvement at all, call function works only a few times, most of the times I got the Network but the call function doesn't work properly... here just a frash Video about it:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0yEcZCOozgkdmdjZWs0bkdIUnc/view?usp=sharing
After this try the LTE Network has disappeard (here a Foto) coming back only later as EDGE Network.
Could be maybe that after the Nexus 5 repair in march, the Device was assembled incorrectly and the Antenna have an unsteady contact?
Isn't the IMEI stored on the motherboard? If so, its possible you got a motherboard with a blacklisted IMEI.

I don't think that the officially LG Support (that replaced my Nexus 5 Motherboard im march) would use Motherboards with blacklisted IMEIs. Even if my motherboard had a blacklisted IMEI, then I shouln't be able to make any single call, but that's not what happens, because I can still and receive calls sometimes.
Well then I think you already know the answer. The warranty repair wasn't successful. You've eliminated everything else except the phone, and it used to work before, correct?

Yes, sadly seems that the problem lies on the unseccessful repair. Could you reformulate your last sentence/question? I didn't understand what you you mean
Is your phone switching to 3G while calling ? Because afaik, 4G can't be used to call someone.
So I suggest you to force your phone to stay in 3G and try making a call.
When I try to make a call with the LTE (4G, with full coverage showed), the call doesn't succeed (look at the last Video that I posted) and just after this the Network disappears and shows "Mobile Network Not Available" (but this doensn't happen always), then a few second later the LTE is available again.
When I move from LTE to 3G there's no Network available, and the call just doens't work. Same with 2G.
Update: I received back from the LG repairing my Nexus 5. In order to fix the problem with the calls, the entire motherboard was swapped. I didn't received more detailed informations about this fix, but right now it works again greatly.
