[Solved] Cant copy .apk to system - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Im having issues copying apk files to the system/app folder, I have tried three different file managers(root browser, root explorer, file explorer). I mount system set it to r/w and when i try to copy or move the apk file i get operation failed/ cannot copy file. I tried copying the same apk (motogallery) to my nexus 7 (android 5.0) it worked fine. However with my nexus 5 its a no go. I'm running stock lollipop rom with root.
Thanks
edit: figured it out had to copy apk to priv-app folder instead of system/app. Strange on the nexus 7 file was copied to system/app and worked just fine.

[Q] DSP Manager

I flashed Cyangenmod 7.1 RC, flashed Frank's Mod to remove all CM7 apps, flashed dark launcher theme.
I copied DSPManager.apk to SDcard prior to flashing Frank's Mod. But it says it can't be installed.
Is there a way to install DSPManager again?
Thanks!
You have to install it back to system/app folder and set permissions if using root explorer or adb push it back. Just hitting install will not do it.

Click to collapse
Thanks for the reply.
But how do I do that?
I moved the apk file to system/app, changed Permission (selected RWX for owners) but it still won't install.
It won't let me change permissions at all inside sdcard.
Instructions for installing apk with root explorer:
1. navigate to file and copy apk
2. navigate to system/app
3. tap on r/w at the top
4. paste all apk
5. change permissions to match the other apks's in the system/app directory.
6. Reboot

System "semi" Writable?

I recently Wiped my Phone completely and decided to Re-Flash Viper 1.2.1.
I noticed a problem prior to re-installing but thought nothing of if since it wasn't crucial at the time.
In Root explorer, I am able to delete [i normally delete boot animations] system files but not add where I need to add. Example, I wanted to add a ringtone to my system/media/ringtones folder. I normally [for the last six years] could just copy and paste such files using a root file manager.
However, when I any these files to for example /system/customize/resource/ it doesnt add it. BUT IT DOES rename the file and save it under a dif folder.
Example. Tried copying-copy to-moving to "androidtwirp.mp3" from sdcard to /system/media/notifications and a message pops up saying"notificationsandroidtwirp.mp3 successfully copied-moved to" and it saves notificationsandroidtwirp.mp3 to /system/media/ and it stays there. retrying from that location only results in "notificationsnotificationsandroidtwirp.mp3".
So not only does it rename the file but it saves it in the wrong location. I am at a loss for word. I tried the basics to tryand fix this but i cant seem to hit it on the head.
Thanks!
Edit: Not updating Super SU app, file explorer seems to have worked. Will attempt to duplicate problem to see what actually caused.it.
FOUND IT!
Updating my ES File explorer broke my system writing ability. DO NOT UPDATE is because when you do...
Any file you move, copy/paste to the system will not work properly.
This first happened when I tried to copy and paste a boot animation after I updated ES root explorer. It would rename whatever file i was trying to paste/move/copy over and save it under a sub folder.
example.
copying a ringtone [i.e. androidtwirp.mp3] from SDCard to System folder, the path is /system/media/audio/ringtones/ and it would rename it "ringtonesandroidtwirp.mp3" and save it under /system/media/audio/.
So basically not only was it renamed [which i didnt want it to be] but it would save it to the folder before the actual folder i needed it to be in, plus it would corrupt the file deeming it useless.
moving "ringtonesandroidtwirp.mp3" into the correct folder would only result in "ringtonesringtonesandroidtwirp.mp3"
this happened across the board with all files being moved around
The ES File Explorer version 1.2.1 comes with works flawlessly so don't update it.
I uninstalled ES [also any folders in SDcard related to it] and downloaded JRummy's root explorer and everything is back to normal except i have to reboot the phone to see files [like ringtones and notifications] that i added to the system.
I think it has something to do with our devices having an unlocked bootloaader, but still S-ON. There's S-OFF in the Dev section now if you really need to write to the system folder a lot.
I came from the Vibrant so I know what you're going through
Yeah, im on a low hboot so s-off might not be in my plans since I can practically flash what I want but it was ES file explorer, when I updated the apk the root permissions broke when writting to the system. I emailed the dev and they said they'd have it fixed on the next update.

[Q] Why some .so files cannot be copied to lib folder?

Hi
I'm using stock android 5.0.1 on my nexus 5. I found an article about installing HTC one M8 camera on nexus5.
"nexus5.wonderhowto.com/how-to/get-htc-one-m8s-camera-app-your-nexus-0160134/"
I tried to flash 2 zip files into the rom using TWRP. TWRP says successful. but nothing happens. (it works on CM12).
I looked at /system/lib folder and realized that some of .so files are not there. then tried to copy them using root explorer but I get error that files cannot be copied. (there are no problems about being root or write permission ...) .
So I'm wondering what is going on here. any ideas?

Es File EXplorer copy/edit gps.conf

Hi
I have a NExus 10 root android 5.1.1
last v. of Es File Explorer
I can access \system\etc and modify permissions
but when i try to copy from outside folder or edit inside gps.conf
result is empty file !?
I guess is only inside system folder that doesn't work cause I usually copy/move files
Is it weird or something simple I don't know?

HwCamera2 folder in system/priv-app

I tried to install P20 pro apk on my Honor View 10 and in the process lost original HwCamera2 folder in system/priv-app content.
Now the P20 pro apk is not working and lost the original stock camera. I assume restoring content of original HwCamera2 folder in system/priv-app will work.
Can you please share content of the HwCamera2 folder in system/priv-app?
Not sure if model matters but I am on BKL L09 8.0.0.140 (C675) India
I would also appreciate this file. Since I started messing with this phone I can't get the camera to work on any ROM, custom or stock, and I noticed that I too am missing this folder.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QHqh_qxxFkjSb3ADdaQMGmBI_907S1_D/view?usp=drivesdk
Download from above link I do not have access to attach else would have done so. This worked for me. Just extract the ZIP and copy the content to system/priv-app and reboot the phone. Make sure the file and folder permissions are (755 for folder and 644 for files)
I followed these steps, but the HwCamera2 folder disappears after reboot.
can you provide more details?
I'm using the latest CosmicOS ROM, which might have something to do with it. When I run `chmod -R 755 on /system/priv-app` I get several read-only filesystem errors. Remounting the system directory as RW does not seem to help. I can copy the HwCamera2 directory to /system/priv-app using either the cp command from the Android terminal or graphically using X-Plore, despite the aforementioned errors. Prior to reboot I can see that the folder is present inside /system/priv-app, but as soon as I reboot it no longer exists. I tried doing this from the terminal in TWRP, but the result is the same.
The method mentioned above works for Stock Rom. You should use steps mentioned in this post https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble/trebleenabled-device-development/huawei-stock-camera-app-treble-roms-t3735169
