[Q] OnePlus one - Unable to switch off mobile data - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just got my oneplus one yesterday through amazon.in. I am using vodafone prepaid without any mobile data pack. Since yesterday, I have been getting popups on my home screen (whenever I wakeup my mobile) about the session data usage. I have my mobile data switched off in settings but still getting these annoying popups.
Would be greatful if you can help me on how to completely switch off mobile data and get rid of these session data popup messages.

Do you have a screenshot of the message?

Here are some screenshots. Even after I checked 'background data restricted', it keeps on sucking the mobile data.

But judging by those screenshots it hadn't actually used any data at all. Those messages are generated by your carrier rather than the phone itself, so I'd contact them.

Initially I contacted my carrier, he confirmed that those were data charges. Yesterday I installed mobiwol firewall, and indeed different apps and service (google services and pushbullet) were using mobile data even my mobile data was switched off and in restricted mode. Its confirmed that its a defect in cyanogenmod.

[Q] Best GPS Find My Phone App?

Hey guys, which app is best for a find my phone sort of app. I just received a Nexus 5 although I will not be getting a plan for it just yet. I will mainly just be using this as a normal wifi device. I want a "find my phone" sort of app that just in case I lose my phone, I will be able to track where it is from my computer. Can somebody recommend me the best app for this feature.
Kinda the same thing:

Yeah but it does not give a solid answer
So the 8 people that said Cerberus isn't solid enough for you? Or are you not looking for anti theft as well? Google already has a locating service built in.

I just want a solid app that I can find my phone with that does not require cellular data or talk and text. It would just require the GPS feature. I am not looking for anti-theft. Plus Cerebus doesn't look like it would be a stable app.
I disagree about the Cerberus.
Try the built-in feature:

The thing about these apps is that they all need some kind of data connection to work. The phone can use only GPS to find out where it is but without a data connection it can't get that information out to you.

So how does this Google Device Manager work then? I thought this shows you on a map of where the exact location is.

It does. When you log into Google Device Manager from a computer or other device it sends a request (through its data connection) to the phone for its location. The phone then finds it own location through cell networks/Wifi networks/GPS and sends that data back through its data connection to Google Device Manager.
This is why it needs a data connection, be it cell data or Wifi, to function. The phone can find its location without out one but has to be connected to send that information out for you to see it.

[Q] Mobile data being used while being disabled

I have got a problem which is bothering me, actually it is pissing me off, which is the fact that mobile data is being used on the background on my nexus 5 even if the mobile data is disabled. These data accesses from my phone are obvioulsy being executed by some app or apps on my phone but this shouldn't happen since I only use wi-fi. In the Network Usage screen there is no app whatsoever, and still at random moments of the day/night it uses mobile data.
Usually these unwanted data accesses are during the night, most of them at exactly midnight, but others are at random hours and, the only way I noticed this was happening was by consulting my phone registers in my account in my service prodiver's webpage.
I am not totally sure of this but from what I have read and been told, if the mobile data is disabled the other option which is "Background Data" is not accounted. So, if the general option for mobile data is disabled NO data at all should be used.
There is a thread which reports a similar problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816167 , however it is not helpful and not about nexus 5.
Does anyone know what could be happening? I am 100% stock on my nexus 5 anyway and only download apps from the store directly, so there isn't any administrative access for any of the apps that I installed. Maybe it is something related to the fact that this is my first phone in which I have 4G enabled? I really don't know...
Thank you in advance!
Update on the current situation:
I asked my service provider (Vodafone) to disable 4G, and to keep only 3G for mobile data. Strangely since that, no more random unwanted mobile background data has been used, so I can conclude two things:
- The genesis of the problem could be on my service provider whenever 4G is enabled by them for the client, or,
- The problem could be on the android OS (4.X +), which may not be doing the block on the mobile data aproprietly. And since I browsed for similar problems, the problem was always with 4G and on 4.X + version of the android, independant from the phone brand and service provider.
This problem should be reported on google AOSP forum.

When this happens, can you look into data usage to see what app was using the mobile data? Maybe that app somehow has some permission to enable mobile data. I've not heard of that happening, so not sure how that would happen.
Also, how are you disabling the mobile data? (some widgets provide the ability to turn off 2g and/or 3g and/or 4g independently - so make sure that both 3g and 4g are being turned off)

Since the moment I disabled mobile data (30th of December) no apps are shown in the data usage, I said this above: "In the Network Usage screen there is no app whatsoever, and still at random moments of the day/night it uses mobile data."
Concerning the 3G and 4G being turnned off or not, I could turn them off but I shouldn't need to do it since by disabling Mobile Data in the Network Usage menu should take care of blocking the data correctly.
This problem has been resolved, but not in the ideal way, as I said in my second post. Since I asked my service provider to turn off 4G on their side, there are no mobile data accesses being done from my phone.

Turning 4G off is one way to fix this
I wonder if the service provider had some issues with counting 4G usage - I don't recall hearing of an issue where turning mobile data off would permit usage. But I could be mistaken.
(assuming you are going into settings to disable mobile data, yes, that should completely disable the mobile data connection 3g/4g - wasn't sure if you were using a widget or other means)

I know what you mean about not hearing about the problem since there are only a hand full of forums which mention this. However I do believe this is generalised for 4G and, probably most people don't even notice it because, either:
- People that never had a mobile data subscription never needed 4G (activated by their service provider), and so in 3G no problems exist. Or,
- People that have a mobile data subscription don't need to worry about these "leaks" of mobile data, and so they never notice it, even if they disable mobile data since their data subscription is enough to not make them pay for a single access (as it happens in my case).
UPDATE on my situation:
Since I asked my mobile service provider (VODAFONE) to turn off 4G for my number all the mobile data leaks disappeared and all is working fine. But the question still remains, if the problem originates from the mobile service provider or from the android 4.4.2 rom
I have got the same magic with my nexus 5(4.4.2), with disabled mobile data (we have only edge-gprs) it connects to network via cell and my mobile operator charges money..
That shows its not just a problem with 4G since he's having an issue with edge/2G
Sent from my LG-LS980 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I am mostly or you can say only on WiFi , I did find some extra charges because of some mobile data usage, contacting my service provider did help, but I still believe that there are certain apps which work even when I am not on WiFi hence the extra charges.

[Q] Orange signal icons when on data plan

Hello,
i have a strange issue (i'm aware of problems that were having Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 users, but i don't know if it's the same) when i'm not connected to any WiFi router and i have access to internet via my provider.
Whenever i check the Quick Settings Panel in the Notification drawer the signal bars are orange and not white as they should have been, no matter if i'm in area with good signal perception (4G selection on the phone), or bad (2G/3G selection on the phone).
The result is that i have access to internet, i can surf via a web browser, use Facebook, read articles/forums in Tapatalk and so on, but i get no notifications for almost every app that notifies you (Gmail, apps that notifies you for live scores for favorite teams such as FotMob, pm in Facebook or notifications for replies/mentions on G+).
When i connect to WiFi router, then i get a barrage of notifications that i've missed the time i was on data plan.
Unfortunatelly, i have no friends that have a micro-SIM and have a data plan enabled, or those who have data plan enabled they have a Mini-SIM (for devices such as Galaxy S3 mini), and i can't try one in order to see if the problem exists with their SIMs.
Do you have in mind what should the problem be?
This looks like a Google services issue.
Try applying a theme and see if it persists. I remember seeing what you are describing at some point

Yes, i know from the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 threads that the orange icon bars means that you have no connection to Google servers.
But i can't understand why only me among my friends with the same Operator, meet such an issue!

To be honest i'm already using an Android L - CM11/PA Theme and as soon as i read your post i was hoping that this is causing the problem, but i applied the stock one, did a reboot, and the icons are still orange.
Thanks both of you for your replies.

When you clear data inside Manage space, does that mean that all your accounts will be wiped out and you'll have to add them all over the beginning?

As soon as i am connected to WiFi router everything is ok.
When on data plan under my Google email there is a Sync error, which i think is right considering that the orange icon bars means that there is no connection to Google servers (that's what i've read in Nexus 4 and 5 threads).

ok so I would try different APN's, check and uncheck data enabled option, check off data roaming option, tick and untick all options in Google that wont sync. I mean try it all if you have not already of course. I have had the orange before and thats all I did was check the main stuff and no issues. If you can make calls and stuff I am quite sure you are ok.
Try 2g only - try it all basically of course if you have not already
For a colleague the issue was operator related. When he was on LTE he had no connection to google servers. It eventually got fixed after a million calls to customer care. If it matters the operator was DU UAE.

Weird Problem

I have this weird error. My Google now gives me a "Couldn't sign in" error whenever I leave home and am on mobile data. I don't get push notifications or anything else.My Google Maps also cannot find my location. It shows just my home location on the map. As soon as I come home, and connect to WiFi, Google now works flawlessly again and I get all my push notifications, say from SnapChat or twitter etc. I tried wiping data for Play Services and all related apps. Cleared Cache, even re flashed Lollipop(without wiping data) but nothing seems to work. Please help!

Those apps probably read your cache instead of using online data, have you check your APN?
Chrome is one of those apps.
I use the APN which my mobile operator provides via SMS Configurations. Other phones in my home uses the same operator and same APN. But they don't encounter any issue.
Can I check it via ADB or logcat or whatever....?
I think, Factory Reset is the only option. But I have Bank apps. Factory Reset changes Device id. So I will be in trouble.
Thanks!
