no usb notification (PACMAN) - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

usb debugging is checked in developer options, phone appears as photon q and mot composite ADB interface in device manager and windows explorer. i have tried 3 usb 2.0 cables and a usb 1 cable. 2 of them were labled as "data cables" and have worked in the past. i have installed the Motorola software previously. only internal storage DCIM and pictures folders are viewable through explorer. i suspect the phone is recognized as being in camera mode but since there is no notification i cant change this. i do have an sd card in the device that is recognised by the operating system. so whats the next step?

Have you tried the original Moto cable?
Have you tried clicking on the notification from the shade and changing the mode?

yes i tried the moto cable and what mode toggle? the network one from off to on yes, and i tried the lte off and on, even reset apn's. the only thing that seems to work is a reboot which only works for the first 3 mins or so. issues started after i flashed nightly. im gonna attempt to do a clean install of nightly. if that doesnt work i might have to stick with rc2
edit: im going to have to call the carrier and see which apn they recommend because i have 5 for sprint

did a factory reset and reinstalled pacman rc2 running smoooooth. wish i could have rc3 though :/

nah now my sd card isnt recognised and i dont have a spare or another device to test if its the card. no mount options in the menu. i also figured out that theres a way to change mtp and ptp via the three dots in the storage menu if anyone gets this problem. also i have no service, idk if theres a way to improve reception from the phone.

You seem to have an unending fountain of issues. Try flashing stock and seeing if they persist. You may have a hardware issue.
You should have some sort of way to plug the SD card into your computer - IE a converter card or a USB-to-microSD key. I guess I always make sure the card comes with one kind or another so I have a few laying around... You can buy one pretty cheap too, especially if you have a MicroCenter near you.

[Q] Computer no longer recognizes USB Disk drive!

Searched many a thread and can't find an answer to this. I've been able to successfully switch back and forth between USB charging and mounting the phone as a disk drive. I literally haven't changed anything important on my phone or computer today; I think I remember uninstalling a task manager this morning but that's about it. But this afternoon plugged it in, and the pop up asking what method to use (charging/sync/disk mount etc) came up as usual, (I have charging as default) and selected USB disk drive, and nothing changed! My laptop made the usual disconnecting/plugging in noise it makes when you put something in the USB ports, but this time my disk drive didn't automatically pop up. Instead, I was greeted with a "USB Device not recognized" message. What the hell?
Tried restarting the computer and phone several times, same results. Tried with debugging mode enabled and disabled; tried pulling the battery/sim/sd card out; the pop-up asking which USB method to use comes up everytime on my phone when I plug it in, but if I have disk drive selected it only charges.
Using Win7 64bit, I then tried to try uninstall and reinstall the HTC Sync drivers by going into "Uninstall Programs" on my computer and manually uninstalling both the "HTC BMP USB Driver" and the "HTC Driver Installer" that remain on my computer from when I rooted. When I tried clicking on and uninstalling either of them, I get a pop up error saying "Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable." No idea what that means. I decided to try re-installing HTC sync, and then uninstalling HTC sync, hoping that the reinstallation would fix the drivers. Well now, I have HTC sync on my computer and that too now is uninstallable, it too gives me the "error opening installation log file" error when I try and uninstall it.
PLEASE HELP ANYONE?!!?

So you tried reinstalling it without trying to uninstall first, as in, installing *over* the current installation?
Is the version you're trying to install the newest one available?
You're logged in/running as admin, right?
Have you tried tracking down the installation log file it's having a problem with, as in, where it's looking for it/why it's not finding it in whatever location it's expecting it?
Sounds like the typical cryptic Windows bull**** that drives me nuts when it happens.
Just throwing some other ideas out there. I haven't run into this type of trouble since I've been on win 7 64bit, its actually been better with these types of problems than previous versions of Windows.
I have had this happen once. A restart of the phone solved it for me. If you have a card reader for the SD card, you could see if your computer will recognize it through the reader. It's also possible removing and re-installing the card will fix your issue.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using the power of the dark side.
I was able to finally uninstall HTC Sync, and the two HTC drivers. Then I installed HTC Sync that I downloaded from this site
http://www.htc.com/us/support/inspire-att/downloads
So now my computer has sync and the 2 HTC drivers installed again. Logged in as admin. Have restarted my phone a billion times. It recognizes the micro SD card if I remove it from the phone and put it in a reader.
Have you tried other ports on the laptop? Have you tried other devices in the port you plugged the phone into like a digital camera? Do you have access to a desktop to load the drivers in and see if it mounts? When you load the drivers it will load drivers first then ask you if you want to install htc sync. You can cancel out there and it won't install sync and the drivers will be installed just fine. Find another cable and see if that helps. Those would be what I would try.
Well when something like this happens I resort to rolling the system back to when it worked to see if that fixes things.
If you have system restore enabled roll it back a day and see if that helps. Open control panel in the search type system restore and there you can select it and see if you have any restore points. Restore the system back and see if it fixes it. If not and you tested the ports with another device and tried a different cable there very well could be an issue with the device.
Get a dropbox account and backup what ever you need to that and do a factory reset on the phone would be a last resort. I would keep the phone plugged in to a charger and use wifi for that if it comes down to it. If you are just needing to get something on the phone you can always use dropbox and then a file manager on the phone in the mean time till things get sorted.
I have used an app like this in the past and it works wonders. I hope you have a wifi connection at the house.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lyy.softdatacable&feature=search_result
These are all the steps I would have taken if an issue like this arose for me.
Tried all 4 of my USB ports, none of them work. All four of them work with other USB devices. I don't have access to another computer right now to try and see it it'll mount there yet. If it DOES work on another computer, is that better or worse than if it DOESNT? System restore isn't an option, unfortunately.
I'll try a factory reset as a last resort if it doesn't work on another computer. As far as using dropbox, what's wrong with using Titanium backup? Isn't dropbox just for data (which is stored on my SD card, and therefore not affected by a factory wipe/reset?) Or are you saying I need to wipe both my phone and reformat my microSD?
I tried using a different microSD card (that works in a reader) in the Inspire, and it too doesn't recognize the disk drive. Does this narrow down the problem to the phone? Is this a physical problem, or is it something that could potentially be fixed with a wipe and hard reset?
If your computer recognizes the SD cards, then it would seem to be the phone. A full wipe and hard reset is probably the next step. Good luck.

Tried a hard reset. Well, I went to Settings --> SD & Phone Storage --> Factory data reset --> Reset phone (erase SD card was unchecked)
Same problems. Was this method thorough enough? Or do I need to tinker with completely erasing everything off of the phone including the rom, via clockwork mod recovery?

I have seen this very issue onllnot only on the Inspire but the captivate as well. Seems windows 7 has an issue with these drivers. What I did to fix it was this. 1. Uninstall all diver related software. 2. Reboot PC. 3. download the driver package from HTC. 4. plug in phone and go to device manager. 5. Manually select the drivers for it. Not saying it will work for you but it did for me when I was running Windows 7 premium 64

By any chance have you tried a different cable?
I've had this issue when I used cheap cable I got on eBay. It would still charge the phone but my laptop wouldn't see it. Tried a different cable and issue was gone.

I actually haven't been able to test the simplest solution by trying a different cable yet, since this is my first phone with microUSB ( I have approximately 759247892 miniUSB cables lying around the house from my past 10 HTC phones) so I only have the one microUSB cable. It is the OEM cable that comes with the wall charger though, but it would be sweet if it was just a faulty cable. Are you strongly recommending that I don't buy a cheap one off of ebay, and instead go to a brick and mortar store and buy a ATT/BestBuy/Fry's Electronics/Wherever one for twenty bucks or whatever they are charging these days? I will if I have to, but I'd obviously rather not... would you recommend a specific cable brand off of newegg?

I think a cheap cable should be fine though the shipping was a little long. I needed a new car charger when I switched from the iPhone and it came with 5 cables. Only one gave me that issue. One note to take into account well maybe it was just the ones I bought but the phone always charged at USB speeds with the cheap cables. If I used the OEM itwould read it as AC and charge much faster
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Yeah I had a cheap car charger for this phone for about a week while waiting for the oem htc one to arrive in the mail, and it would charge at usb speeds, it'd ask me if I wanted to disk drive/charge only/etc...plugged into a car. Since then I received my oem car charger and it works great and that slow charging/prompt went away. I guess I'll invest in another cable, I'm bound to need more anyway. Hopefully it's that simple.

Well, I got a new OEM HTC micro USB cable to test, and I am having the same problems, so it's not the cable.... any other suggestions? Is there any difference in doing a data reset vs going into clockword mod and doing a FULL erase of the device and then reinstalling a rom? I have yet to try testing if it'll work on another computer as well...
I suggest doing a full wipe in cw. Find another computer and load the drivers on that and try it. If it doesn't mount then its the phone and you will have seek att for a replacement
I have this problem and I don't even care anymore...lol gave up on it. Nothing fixed this problem. So I just try insertting the plug multiple times to make it work.
EDIT:
I've tried
Reformatting my computer
Trying it on different operating systems(XP, vista, 7)
3 Different USB cables for smartphones.
Reinstall HTC DRIVER
New SD card and reformatted SD card.
Tried multiple roms
completely re-root the phone.
All these never fixed it. Somethigg must be wrong inside of my phone.

I would definitely try another computer first. Still does it, full erase on cwm. Still persists, factory reset the darn thing. Finish the process of elimination before factory reset. As I have worked at 2 different Toyota dealers in Memphis, if a car had a problem that had multiple solutions, they would try all the easy solutions first before using the last resort solution. Imo, a factory reset is a last resort solution. If that still doesn't help, restore to stock and s-on the punk, and warranty the thing out. It sounds more like a phone hardware problem than anything else. Hope it helps!

[Q] TF101 won't connect to iMac. No USB/MTP options under settings> Storage. HELP!

Hi there. Strange problem I can't find any info with a solution. Seems a guy had a similar problem last year but there was no resolution.
TF101 Stock 3.2.1 (Japanese unit) Last update we got was in Feb to 3.21. No ICS for us yet.
Yesterday I connected my TF101 to my iMac to transfer some files but it would not connect. I unplugged and tried again but still no luck. Up until now I was able to connect no problems. I tried it on a Macbook Air and still nothing.
I checked the cable still charges the unit and it does. If the unit is asleep and I plug the USB in it wakes to the lock screen so it is getting something from the USB port.
I reinstalled the Android file transfer and still nothing.
I did some digging and found that I need to go to settings > storage > press the 3 dots at the top right > select MTP.
Thing is, I don't have 3 dots at the top right. The only option I have in storage is to unmount the external SD card.
I tried turning on and off the USB debugging. No go.
I tried rebooting and cold booting. No go.
Does anyone have any ideas? Do I need to do factory reset?
I don't want to buy a new cable as I want to see what the deal with these missing three dots is. It seems to be a problem on the TF101 side not the computer.
Thanks in advance for your help.
You could try rooting and flashing a custom ROM, this would also have the benefit of giving you ICS.
Otherwise go to applications and look for menus there, and Development, enable USB-debugging, and keep hunting through the menus.
Make sure you have adb/asus sync on your macs.
Thanks Thing.
I have hunted high and low through all the settings.
The thing that baffles me is that it was working fine one day but not the next.
There have been no updates from ASUS here since Feb.
I will install Asus sync and see what happens.
Sounds like something got corrupted somewhere, If you have a MicroSD and are willing too go ahead and do a factory reset in the settings and make sure you're on the latest ota, this should fix it. (use the microsd to backup everything you've put on there, google backs up your apps if you check it in the playstore so you can redownload them)
^^This is only if you can't get it too work
The alternative is to root and flash a custom rom :3
Also having this problem
Hey. My android file transfer app on mac also doesnt detect my transformer tf101.
Also eclipse doesnt detect it so I am unable to use my transformer for development at the moment. I see the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the Storage tab and it is set to MTP.
Also USB debugging is enabled and no bee icon comes up on the action bar when I plug in the USB.
This only started happening after I upgraded to a rooted ICS ROM I found on this forum. I just did a factory reset and it didnt help :/
If anyone can help me, I will give you an internet bro fist.

PC not recognizing S3 ...

It seems no matter what I do, my PC, & a few others, just WILL NOT recognize my Verizon S3! Yes, the Samsung drivers have been installed in all of them. I am at my witt's end with this phone. #Ugh!!!
PS: I am pretty sure I have been through every single "option" within the settings, & I cannot find anything to help. If I drop the pull-down menu, & If I catch it quick enough, I can tap the USB icon & be taken to a screen where I have a choice for either "media" or "camera" whatnot.

I thought I'd mention this just in case ... if you plug your phone in while the screen is locked you'll need to unlock it to get the volumes to mount and appear in explorer.
If you are running XP or later you should not have to load any special USB drivers to make mass storage work.

Neither comment is helpful. Especially since he said he tried other computers.
OP, my Sprint S3 connects automatically with USB Debugging enabled on the phone so I don't have to hit anything on the phone. Then a popup shows up on Windows asking what I want to do.
FNM
Try this maybe if u havent already...
Sorry to hear that. Normally when I plug in my S3 to my Win7 Laptop, It just detects and auto-play pops open with what I want to do.
You should try plugging the S3 into the back of the computer and also deleting the drivers that were installed from the phone already and re-installing.

MTP Sucks

With the latest (and unfortunate) update from HTC, I have come to the conclusion that MTP is not the best protocol to transfer files between 2 devices. Why? It's much slower plus less secure. Maybe I just wanted to charge my device when hooking it up to the PC. With normal USB file transfer, by default, the phone does not mount and show its files to the PC. With MTP it does; and there's no way to stop it. MTP is also less stable. I had freeze ups many times when transferring large files where my computer no longer recognized the device. I had to unplug and restart.
Is anyone else having issues? Or is it just me being on Windows 8? Anyone know of a way to disable MTP and use the traditional way of mounting to sync? Thanks.
Just got an option I'm going to try. I worked on other devices I'll try ours:
"Use system tuner app. Go to startup button. Check for mtp. Click on it and find the exclude button. Click on it. Restart your tab. Connect to your charger and see if it works. For me it does, but you probably have to repeat the step because mtp might appear in your startup again (i don`t know how to kill it once for all)."

in windows 8 it sucks like hell, im with you, but in windows 7 is working fine and super fast, i pass large files from my pc to my phone, and when i say large, they are really large. i use my phone for movies, and i download movies from 5 to 6 GB, and it take a couple of seconds to get from my pc to my phone. you need updated drivers for it to make it work right.

Bull****.
MTP cant get over 2MB/sec even when using a high-end PC with SSD HDDs and USB3(yes i know the S doesnt support usb3, thats not the point), while USBMS easily do 10-15MB/sec, and ADB 5-6MB/sec.
MTP is worse than useless. Good thing I coded Quick ADB :silly:
MTP & the suck
I can agree on the initial frustration I had, trying to understand why my other android device allowed the copying of any file ext. onto the SD card. I bought a new phone with the same ICS os(phone did not come with a file manager), when I learned of MTP then what I learned now was that mass storage no longer exists . It is a more secure way the computer reads the device, so to avoid the blockade you'll need another device anything that has m-sd card capability so you can dump any one or more files onto it first off. Then goto googleplay and dl a good file manager program to use while accessing file in the phone. It should be simple from then in on to install any backed up .apk files or view any media(phone did not come with a versatile media player)files.

did not work for me, mtp still loaded!
i hate mtp, every time i copy a image file or video from my phone, it is corrupted, windows 7 or xp.
sometimes my wallpapers get corrupted just using es file explorer or just what seems randomly.
this is on my verizon note 2, running stock JB 4.1.2
anyone find a real solution yet?
if i have to root to get this solved, so be it, but i am about to do so any way since i miss having more control over my device.
turns out after testing, my sd card is a faked 64gb class 10, transfer rate suggests class 4 and 4gb of data was verified, good news is i can still get my money back and my friend who sold it to me may not have known it was a faked card.
MTP is completely retarded. UMS is a tried-and-tested protocol, this is the biggest sh*t sandwich Google has handed Android users so far.
MTP crashes every single time I try to use it. Try opening a folder that contains a large number of files. Explorer will freeze. Furthermore, MTP requres a device-specific driver, whereas UMS uses a standard driver. Oh this sucks so much!
Guys, I don't understand you really... In every ROM I've flashed lately being it AOSP or Sense based, there's an option to switch from MTP to the "old" UMS mode. In AOSP based ROMs it is usually located in Settings - Storage and you should open the menu there and you have USB Computer Connection where you can choose whatever you like. It is an option like any other options, you can use it or not
And yes I agree with you...it sucks

In AOSP based ROMs it is usually located in Settings - Storage and you should open the menu there and you have USB Computer Connection where you can choose whatever you like. It is an option like any other options, you can use it or not
And yes I agree with you...it sucks

I am on a rooted S4 MINI using the original stock ROM. Other than this small niggle, after removing all the crapware I am pretty happy with what I have, although if there is a compatible ROM that would bring UMS to the table I'd be happy to try it. I just find it very annoying that earlier Samsung phones used to have the UMS option but recently they decided to get rid of it. That's as stupid as it can possibly get: a tried and tested, working feature that was already in place... WTF not just leave it there??

I know CM11 has the option included and I'm sure you have either an official or a CM11 port available for S4 mini

[Q] USB MTP not working

For the last few weeks I haven't been able to get any PCs to see my phone (tried my personal, work, and one friend's, all running Windows 7). Previously it would mount as an external drive just fine (MTP) but now I really cannot get it to connect to any computers so I'm having to do all file transfers through Dropbox and stuff.
Tried a few apps like the SGS3 Easy UMS but nothing works. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong? Thanks in advance for any advice.
I've been updating to the "last stable build" of CyanogenMod 10.1 and now 10.2 from the ApexQ team about once a week. Not that I really know what it means.
Did you try different cables?
Try downloading all drivers for our phone and using last 10.1 nightly. That's what I'm on currently on and just used 2 days ago and had no issues. Most importantly use cable that came with phone!
Sent from my SGH-T699 using xda premium
Thanks for all the suggestions. Downgrading to the last stable 10.1 nightly seems to have done it. Same cables used throughout.

having issues with that too from time to time. reboot sometimes helps, shutdown, pull battery and wait a few secs then put it all back together always did.
may be related to the otg-driver they are fiddeling with atm. seems like the chip gets stuck in some mode which makes the device invisible (doesn't even show up in kernel logs as if it wasn't connected at all)

we're just adjusting for a few differences in the 3.4 kernel (plus all the nutty caf patches d2 loves) and adding new features at the same time look for otg in a build near you soon. At this point it's not "does otg work" but "how can we best implement this in our shared kernel" and "can we also do usb aca" (otg + charging at the same time)
my phone's rooted, but i decided not to put CM on it.
anyway, MTP is pissing me off.
everything i try to put music on it from my computer, it doesn't recognize it and puts it in the LOST.DIR. What's worse is that I can't delete anything I put on the SD card. It says it's protected.
I've tried putting music on my sd card using another phone with usb mass storage and exchanging sd cards, but it gives me the same result.
anyone have a solution to this?
i've tried usb mass storage enabler, airdroid, and kies. none work.
any help is appreciated! thanks!
Sounds like your sd card. Try a different one.
