[q]battery dies fast - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Down to 15% with only 3.5 hrs screen on time. Mostly just web browsing and a couple of brief games. I keep the brightness down low too. Is this normal?

No this is not. If it is a new unit then do a factory reset. If problem persist just RMA it. I had same problem and only a RMA can save you.

I had already tried the factory reset. I am rooted too so not sure if they will allow RMA.

Just unroot it .
A test to be sure: factory reset, then just add your gmail account but refuse to restore any apps. Don't touch any settings except screen brightness to 25%.
Then use your tablet for web browsing. If you're not able to achieve 6hours sot at minimum before your battery died, then for sure you have a faulty unit. And only RMA can solve this.

I did not think it could be unrooted without unlocking bootloader , and flashing factory image. When i did the factory reset, root remained. The screen flickers too so maybe it is just a bad unit.
Sent from my LG-D851 using XDA Free mobile app

Don't worry about root. Evidently the bootloader has to be locked except in cases of cracked corners but they don't seem to care about root. This isn't Samsung.
You should be able to get much much longer battery life though so RMA is your best bet.

SuperSu have an option just right there to fully unroot your device. There is not need to unlock. And even if you unlock your bootloader i don't can't see any grip for nVidia to deny your warranty because of the battery draining. Is not related to your bootloader instead you've installed a custom rom.

I saw that unroot option but did not want to take a chance on it. I was still within 30 days so I just returned the tablet and ordered a new one. Hopefully the new one has a better battery.

I am having the exact same problem my shield. The battery life is awful and the max I have got out of a full charge is 4 hours screen time on low brightness

It's really hard to tell you what's going on with your battery just by one screenshot. You need logs and a software able to help you find out the culprits. Try BetterBatteryStats and/or Wakelock kernel and see which app is draining your battery.
On the other side, if you updated your tablet to lollipop and didn't performance a Factory reset, do it, and if you do it make sure you configure your device as a new one.

HELP: Infuse overheating, Cant return to AT&T. Need advice???

I Baught the infuse on launch day off a friend of a friend of mine that was elgible for an upgrade. I gave him the money for the phone plus $100 for himself for doing it. The phone has been really hot the last few days. Yesterday it was at or around 100 Degrees F after i started using it (very light use). Last night when charging it took over 7 hours to fully charge. I turned screen brightness all the way down, have underclocked the processor to 800MHZ, what else can i do? Today the thing died on me in 3.5 hours and i didnt even use it... The screen was on for a total of 15 minutes. It was at about 105 degrees all day... i tried to contact the person who sold it to me to see if they could meet me at the store to try to return it for another unit, to make a long story short im unable to get ahold of them at all so im out of luck. What can i do? Is it possible to return to at&t without the reciept? I doubt it. I dont think the problem is the battery however, Ive take the battery out and its nice and cool, the hot area seems to be the metalic part covering the sim card right underneath the camera area thats hot. I can try to buy another battery but i dont think the issue is the battery. Im not sure what to do at this point. Any ideas on how i can cool the phone down? Or get a replacement unit?
It sounds like you have something running in the background that is forcing your processor to run at maximum speed (and voltage) all the time.
Try a menu->settings->factory data reset and dont install anything but updates, report back if it still gets hot.
Widget locker is being reported to cause issues fyi.
Might try contacting samsung. Maybe a battery problem. But sounds more like what previous poster said Runaway proceser

look in settings about phone for battery use. post results. it may be a bad app, it may be the radio needs to be reset. the radio's can put off as much as or more heat than the processor. if it says cell radio 50% then you just need to enter airplane mode and then turn airplane mode off.
*#*#4636#*#* and go into battery stats you can check all usage there lots of cool stuff

Thank you all so much for the responses, I have widgetlocker installed ... I will try that right now and report back. I've noticed too when I use setcpu after about an hour or so it would reset itself and I would have to go back in and reset it to whatever settings I had before

What wall charger are you using? The correct specs wall charger for the phone shouldn't give you the choice menu for mass storage,... etc. It should just charge.
I found that if I used the wrong type of wall charger(even car charger) the battery would get very warm. Using the charger that came with the phone doesnt do this.
I think the phone seems to go into a usb mode but gets way more current than expected.
I would call samsung, they will honor their warranty, regardless of who purchased the device.
I had problem with htc inspire, which I have bought on Ebay and I obviously didnt have a receipt for it.
To make a long story short I took it to att and they have replaced it for me no questions asked.
I said I have bought it from a private party.
I'm hoping that all of the responses of guys here at forum helped You, but if not remember, to try Your last resource which is att warranty department.
But I would personally go to corporate store not call them.
When You buy anything warranty usually stays with the device not the owner.
I believe, there is stubborn application running in the background, have You tried taskiller?
Good Luck!

Nexus S won't power up?

I recently flashed CMRex with Kejar's 4.1.1 gapps and was going about setting up my device. I got everything set up how I like with all the apps I wanted downloaded and running how I wanted them. I then ran the v6 supercharger mod that I had used on my past two roms with no problem whatsoever. After finishing the set up of the script, I rebooted my device and all was well. I went to browse on craigslist's mobile app, then I saw something I wanted to google, so I opened my browser. My browser took an ungodly amount of time to load my homepage(google), and wouldn't respond hardly. I couldn't get the touchscreen to respond. My hardware buttons did respond and I got haptic feedback from them, but no response on the screen. Eventually, after numerously pressing the home button, I got a message saying the browser wasn't responding, selected ok to close it, then back to the non-responsiveness of the touch screen and hardware buttons. And then another eventually later, after another multitude of home button presses, I got to my homescreen but everything was laggy. The most lag I have ever encountered with my device since I obtained it, not to mention that my device was beginning to heat up. So, I decided I would power off the device, remove the battery, let it cool down, and then replace the battery before powering it back up. Well, lo and behold, I did just that, went to power back up my device, and there was no sign of life at all. Tried to get into the bootloader, no response. Tried a normal boot, no response. Tried to plug it into the charger to see if it would charge, no response. Well, my girlfriend told me to leave the battery out for a while and leave it alone for a while before trying it again. So, I played some MW3 for about 45 minutes to an hour, repeated all the above, and still no sign of life. Can anyone help me out? (I don't know if this is supposed to go into the Q&A or here, so I just post here.) I'm so distraught at the possibility of losing my phone, that I'm finding it hard to cope at the moment. Should be thinking of ways to gain some money in order to purchase a new device or is there still hope?
what a long message.do you have any point form here?
i hope you solve the problem .
Do you have access to a separate charger? You can try charging your battery there and see if that works. Did you try connecting it to the computer? Maybe that will show some sign of life. Also, how old is your phone and did you over clock?

I did not overclock, I do believe that my clock speeds were at the kernel default, either 100/1k, or 200/1k. Not sure which, but definitely one of those. The only other charger I would have access to would be my mother's HTC charger, but I will try that and connecting it to the computer as well. Well, I'm not exactly sure on the age of the phone because I purchased it off of craigslist, but it's in great condition. Only had a small scuff on the top left corner, but I know that has nothing to do with the age of the hardware. ): Could it possibly be that my battery decided to die for some reason? I've been having horribly battery life lately. Granted, I had horribly battery life when I got the phone, but it's gotten worse and worse since then.
My Nexus S wouldn't start but gave a flash on the screen when the battery was first inserted. Just got it back from repair and it was a motherboard problem. Was looking at a Huawei G300 as a cheap replacement if the repair wasn't covered by warranty (which it was). Good luck!
Thing about it is, I bought the phone off craigslist so I have no idea if its covered by the warranty still. Should I try calling samsung and find out?

Testing the battery can be done differently, do you have a multimeter? Maybe your neighbours have one, it's a common thing. You can measure whether it has any power left. If you measure low voltage (below let's say 3400 mV), then it could be battery related.

If you've got no warranty, perhaps time to buy a new phone? Bought myself a new Galaxy Nexus.

[q] help! I think my phone got fried! :(

hi everyone!
ok so last night I flashed franco kernel on my phone and I went to bed setting an alarm for 8. in the morning I woke up but not at 8, because my alarm didn't go off. why? because my phone was off. it got so unbelievably hot that you literally couldn't hold it for more than 3 seconds without seriously burning yourself. there's also the Google bumper case on it, that's how got it got. I have no idea how, or why it got so hot, but it did. the only thing I can think of is franco kernel, and how the vibrator frequency is set so high. but when I checked my battery graph app it showed no results from 3 to 8:40, or about 2 hours after I plugged my phone in and went to bed. by the time the phone finally turned on, the battery was at 40 percent, and I noticed that all my Wi-Fi access points got deleted, as well as my wallpapers on the launcher (the ones I set, not the built in ones). I didn't really think anything of this, until now when I went to use Google maps, and the location was off by a lot and there's a huge 5km wide blue circle around my location. I thought it was a maps problem and cleared data with no luck. I tried other location apps like transit with the exact same problem, so now I'm thinking... did the insane temperatures melt something? did it destroy my Wi-Fi location thing? why did it get so hot? like I've never had this problem before until I flashed franco kernel so I'm assuming it's a problem with that. anything I could do to fix my phone? thanks!
It's possible but I'm pretty sure the phone would shut off before damage happened (and that feature is in an area where the kernel can't touch).
This may or may not help but disable the Google Plus app.
For some reason it started glitching out and was continuously using 100% CPU even though I never used the app. Disabling it let my battery last more than an hour and stopped the heat issues.
Mine gets randomly hot.Try to restore a backup and see what happens. IF that doesn't work you might need to restore a factory Image. Can you use adb/fastboot?

If you did all of that then it is possible there was some damage to parts inside the phone and RMA would be necessary. Although I imagine Google or LG would wonder how this happened

Do you use the original cable and charger to charge? Have you checked BetterBatteryStatts to see if an app is active when its not supposed to, i personaly think is unusal app activity that keeps the phone busy. Just flash the stock rom in fastboot and see if it improves or happens again.

Then you have to send it in for repair. Maybe its hardware related.
Leaving your phone plugged in the power outlet overnight might be the cause, and I don't know how well franco kernel is optimized for such scenarios too. The auto shutdown prevented further damage to your phone.

yeah I guess. I'll call Google today and see what happens
If the phone shut down in the middle of the night and was still blazing hot in the morning even though the phone was off then that points at a charging issue that has overheated the battery. No custom kernel should be able to override the charging circuitry so I'd definitely say it's a hardware fault.
The overheated battery has probably damaged some of the antennae in your phone.
If I were you I would flash full stock and RMA your phone.

Galaxy S6 Overheating after OTA update

Hi There,
This is the first time i've been so stuck i need to ask for help, so here it goes:-
my wife has a Galaxy S6 (sim free G920F) for around 25 days, Last night it prompted for an OTA update, which we allowed however today, all it is doing is complaining about Overheating and it needs to turn off, when putting it back on charge it says battery temp is too hot after it is left for a bit unplugged you can plug it back in and it will charge, but the error returns. saying it is too hot.
all since the OTA update
it currently on stock 6.0.1
I've tried to clear the cache and do a factory reset. but neither have resolved the problem.
anyone else had this since the update?
Many Thanks
Paul
Most likely culprit is the fast charging feature. Try disabling it and see if that resolves your problem.
Settings » Battery, disable fast charge
If that fixes your problem I'd say try a different cable and charger with quickcharge support.
You can also try turning phone off then trying to charge.
If it still gets crazy hot I'd say your battery is quickly going bad and you should get it replaced.
If it works fine without quickcharge at least you narrowed down the issue.

Just power off device, then press power+vol up and home button. When you see samsung logo relase just power button. When you enter in recovery just navigate to wipe cache partition and confirm with power key then reboot device. This is good for device after ota update, battery drain problems etc

What happens when you power the phone off completely and plug in charger?
See if it'll fully charge, this will rule out software / os issue.
Better to find this out first before your left with a dead phone for a couple weeks I've been there.

Hi
It happened to my galaxy s7 and my friend's galaxy s6. Both in exact same time (after update)
After update devices start to overheat without a reason during normal usage (Web browsing etc).
And I mean really hot - this kind of temperature that makes me worry about hardware.
The weird thing is that even that I flashed previous ROM (downloaded from sammobile and flashed with odin) the problem still occur. I thought that wiping all data and cache and flashing a ROM should totally remove any change that has been done to device by update, but it seems like I "can't go back" to the state from before the issue.
I searched the whole Internet looking for that issue hoping that some people already started to complain about it and by this - confirming that this is a larger problem related to update. Right now this is the only topic that I found.
Could be that people are still not aware that their recent problems with overheating is not because of some crazy app lagging (that's what my friend first thought was).
In addition when you try to Google the issue you got 102910 tutorials about how to resolve overheating by disabling fast charge or not using phone in the sun... lol.
Strange. One possibility is that the temperature sensor(s) inside the phone are defective and reports inaccurate temperature readings. I had this problem with my ex-HTC One X+, it would report high temperatures when in reality it's nearly ice cold (during the winters), I had the service centre replace the sensors for me.
My S6's battery temperature never exceeds 40°c, while the CPU occasionally reaches 70°c, at that point, my S6 would perform an automatic soft reboot. But that's it though.

Solved
I had to allow it to turn off and let it cool down. left it 4 hours, turned it back on, (in all honesty, trying to replicate the problem for RMA) and all fine, over heating message disappeared and no problems since really weird.

I think better app for cpu temp is CPUZ. It gives you more info.
Right now I'm on custom rom (superman rom) and with custom superkernel 1.4 and it seems like the phone overheats less - but I do not really know what are the good standard Temps for processor in basic use.

How do you know your phone 'overheats'? Does it show any message on the screen saying it is or does it self reboots? If it doesn't, it's not 'overheating', basic logic.
My S6 has 'overheated' only twice, it self rebooted.

frequent reboot after few min of use

Hi all
I have an annoying issue just started to happen yesterday
I have BKL09 Version with latest stock EMUI 9.1 AND patches
Suddenly the device is rebooting randomly just after 3 to 5 min of use ..it may reboot now while I'm writing this !
I have tried to uninstall the last 5 apps or so that may have contributed into this but no luck
I can also try to do factory reset but it's a pain as I have lots of apps and data to backup
Just wondering if anyone has faced the same situation or what else I can look for before factory reset ?
Thank you
Reboots If not under use?
Reboots If battery full or empty or both?
Before reboots IT shows Something on the screen?
Hopefully is a software problem. Try to backup your data an reset everything. If that didnt work, hopefully is the battery.
The worst case the problem may be some chip on the motherboard(cpu, memory, some electronic) that has aged or water damage or purely bad luck.
I had a Nexus 5X with the well know "soldering problems" that did the dame thing; sudden reboots.

It's just hang for few seconds then reboot itself
I have tried wipping the cash partition as advised by support when I called them over the phone but it didn't help

If You opened a phone before, battery in this model is prety simple to be replaced. You should be carefull with batteries as they might be dangerous. If You never did IT, You should find a service that can do that for You.
A replacement battery is 15$ dollars in my country and the service should be around another 15-20$ as it's not so hard to replace IT. This phone s are not glued - You can check IT on YouTube.
i also have the same issue from mid march and it has progressively worsened only. did you find any solution
