[Q] Factory Reset using TWRP now it asks for encypted password upon boot - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I just got my new S5, so it was time to nuke my S3 to get it ready for sale. My S3 is running 4.1.2 rooted with an unlocked bootloader and TWRP 2.5.0.0. To ensure a better wipe I encrypted the device and then did a factory reset. Now upon booting back up, I get a screen that reads: Enter password to access encrypted device storage. So I entered my password and it won't accept it. I cancel out of it, nothing works - I'm stuck.
I'm trying to reset the phone back to 4.1.2 and have no idea what I need to do next. Any help appreciated.

If no one knows how to fix this is there a way using TWRP or something other method to flash my S3 back to stock 4.1.2?

I looked at your thread earlier and I was wondering how to do it myself. Since your on an unlocked bootloader you can flash it back to another version, however I'm not sure if because having encryption enable it will let you

SOLVED!
This Wonderful Guide from droidstyle helped me out.
1. I already had the USB drivers installed so I skipped to Section 5: How to Odin back to Stock from any rom/recover from a soft brick/flash a stock radio.
2. Downloaded the appropriate stock firmware, in my case it was VRALG1 4.0 ICS since I was on 4.1.2 and was not unfortunate enough to use any OTAs (4.3 and up) which permanently locked the bootloader.
3. Power on phone to Download mode (Hold Power on, Volume down and Home key at the same time). Make sure Binary Flash Counter is set to NO. Press Volume Up to select download mode.
4. Connect phone to computer and follow the steps on using ODIN to flash the stock image.
Phone reboots, wait and then viola - it booted just fine and asked me to set up the phone. Just to play it safe I rebooted to stock recovery, wiped cache and did a hard reset.
Now I will unlock and root the phone and then it's ready for sale. :good:
BTW I tried to find a stock 4.1.2 rooted and unlocked image but couldn't. If I find it I will flash it.

[Q] Root + CWM without unlocking bootloader?

Hello, is there any possible way how to root Nexus S GSM ICS 4.0.4 without unlocking my bootloader.
I made it once when I wanted to update from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 by using UnlockRoot and then instaling CWM via RomManager, but after update my recovery/CWM doesn't work, I am just getting a "dead" android with red triangle above him. It a bit wierd because I still have superuser app,but RomManager is not able to install CWM.
For as far as I know it's not possible.
I updated my NS to 4.0.4 from 4.0.3 by unlocking the Bootloader and flash CWM on it, from CWM I flashed the update to 4.0.4 and it works like a charm.
The "dead" android you see is for as I know another bug of 4.0.3, the recovery mode simply does not work.
If you are going to unlock the bootloader, please create a backup of everything, also your internal memory (photo's, videos, music etc.) Since the whole phone will be whiped.
Ok, i might be wrong but does lock on booting screen mean that my bootloader is locked? Someone told me that it says that my bootloader is unlocked...I lil'bit confused and lost
And maybe last question: Is it possible to flash CWM via Odin like other samsung devices?
Lock on the Google screen means it is unlocked. And AFAIK you can root and flash ROMs without unlocking.
ok, thanks for providing info.
Now i have to solve my not working recovery, is there any stock CWM kernel?
If you see the dead android with the red triangle above it, just hold the power button and press the vol.+ button and you'll see your recovery
Note that the padlock is actually open, hence "unlocked". Locked bootloaders show no padlock at all.
I believe there is -currently- no "official" way to root 4.0.4 without unlocking the bootloader, so i wouldn't count on it considering we have a relockable bootloader (and hence don't need exploits).
Still having prob with recovery, i flashed it via adb fastboot, but after restart is my CWM lost (really not there) again
Rename /system/etc/install-recovery.sh to something else.
problem with recovery
I also see a dead android but in my case backlight also dies out and when I press vol up + power button, phone just reboots
The official 4.0.3 has the recovery broken.
As the recovery mode cannot be used, I think unlocking bootloader then flash CWM recovery become a must.

Ok, i will try but right now i have to fix my superuser app, it's gone mad, it is not asking about permission, some apps gets it, but my root explorer not...i tried to reinstall root expl. but it didn't help, tried to delete SU data and nothing, still not getting permission for r.exp.
There is an exploit that you could use you to get root without unlocking BL or wiping phone. I used it myself and it was super easy. Unfortunately, the exploit was closed in 4.0.4(so I've heard).
If you can find a way to revert to an earlier ICS or GB check out the link below:

if your bootloader is unlocked it should say : “LOCK STATE – UNLOCKED”.
If you have a dead android and exclamation mark, it is the stock recovery. Press volume down + power button + volume up, in order. This will give you the stock recovery.
For some reason the new ICS update still has the 2.3.6 security.
use this http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-force-your-nexus-s-into-clockworkmod-recovery/
to flash CWM Recovery
About this thread topic, is there any way to root without unlocking?
When I was in 2.3.6 I had my phone rooted without unlock, but lost root after the ICS update althought I still have the Superuser app in my apps even after a factory reset, so I assume it was installed as a system app.
Can I do anything to regain root now that I have Superuser already installed?

Lock on boot screen = unlocked
I think you can flash cwm via odin or you can try flash the cwm 5.0.1.0 via rom manager, it works for me...
Here's CWM 5.0.2.8

First press volume down + power + volume up. This gets you into STOCK recovery.
Since ICS has a problem with the CWM recovery loading up. You can force it to go into recovery.
Heres how
type this in cmd prompt (Make sure your command prompt search is in the correct folder. Press shift and right click on your folder you have your img in. Than click run command prompt in the list): fastboot flash recovery <RECOVERY IMG>

Soft Bricked stuck in 'custom' boot screen

Shortly after getting the phone I rooted and installed CM / Synergy ROM. I'm not entirely sure what happened but a few days after I started receiving a message about insufficient storage when attempting to update apps on the Market. So I figured just redoing everything would be a good way to resolve the issue.. that went well.
I followed the how to root your vzw guide. I wiped and reset back to factory, flashed the Synergy ROM again with Odin, and then applied the latest Imoseyon LeanKernel. I then spent hours getting everything set back up thinking the phone was fine. After the phones first reboot I had a message stating the phone was running an unauthorized version of software and I should contact Verizon. So I panicked and went back to the guide following the section titled 'How to get back to stock from any rom' I applied both of the VRAL files as it says and then the stock ROM.
Not sure if I'm just compeltely confused on part of the process here or what, but I do not understand why I still have a 'custom' boot screen showing, and now am stuck in a boot loop. Although, I'm no longer seeing the scary contact Verizon message.
I had also run into something after hours of digging called root66. So I tried that as well and I'm still stuck in the same position. The custom counter has gone up each time I've flashed.
Vol up + home + power enter the screen saying it's loading custom boot and then the phone vibrates / restarts / hangs in boot.
Help is greatly appreciated!

Maybe odin again,if you can get into adb?
in adb type in
Code:
adb reboot download
this should get you into odin mode
If that doesn't work try
Code:
adb reboot recovery
here's an example of how output should look
Code:
Erics-MacBook-Pro:applications eric$ adb reboot recovery
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
if you do this you this properly you should be in recovery clockwork mod, wipe everything or restore to a previous rom, i hope that helps.
http://goo.im/devs/invisiblek/i535/stock.kernel.tar here's the stock kernel
Odin back to stock rom, odin stock kernel, boot into recovery, wipe data factory reset. Next time read the guide more thoroughly and unlock your bootloader before flashing.
ericerk; adb is not detecting the device. I'm receiving the following message when trying to list devices or using the reboot commands you have recommended; "List of devices attached" and nothing after. Also "error: device not found" Odin is detecting the device.
droidstyle; Those are the steps I followed. The problem is I can not enter into the recovery menu now. When I hold Vol up + Home + Power while the device is booting it attempts to load, vibrates the device, and then hangs in a boot loop. I had also downloaded EZ and unlocked the bootloader before hand. Maybe the mistake I made was to lock it after everything was done? Maybe I misunderstood something I had read about doing so to avoid a push and causing the exact issue I have?
Thanks again!
Why did you relock the bootloader? That was a big mistake!! Now you need to follow section 2...flsh a stock rom and kernel, boot into stock recovery, wipe data, reboot. This time Unlock the bootloader and leave it unlocked!
Just for verification/clarification, the stock rom and kernel I have downloaded are;
Samsung-Updates.com-GT-I8530_XEF_1_20120614154832_nv1pfwdaeb / I8530XXLF3_I8530OXXLF1_HOME.tar.md5
Samsung-Updates.com-SCH-I535-VZW-I535VRALF2_Kernel / kernel.tar
I may have misread something. I read to avoid getting a push from Verizon and possibly locking out the device that the boot loader needed to be locked.
Doing as you've recommended now. Flashing the stock ROM; stock.vzw_root66.tar, kernel, attempting to boot into recovery.
Thank you. Still waiting on this download to Odin the stock image.
If your on a custom rom you will never get a push or OTA from verizon. Also if your stock rooted, you can uninstall all vzw services to block OTA's
When does the custom boot screen come into play? Is this after locking/unlocking the bootloader? Or is this from flashing a custom ROM?
Also the lock icon is in the unlocked position. I'm not sure if this has relation to actually being unlocked or is just a default image showing it's 'custom'
Back up and running! Thank you.
So I've unlocked the boot (will remain unlocked this time) and flashed the following ROM and kernel just as I did last time.
Eschelon's Synergy / Synergy_d2vzw-19Aug12-0509-r39-s
Imoseyon LeanKernel / lk_tw_beta-v0.2.2
Rebooted the device to test and have not received the unauthorized Verizon message yet. The custom boot screen image is gone as well.
thanks for info!

when your bootloader is unlocked the custom unlock screen will go away...reason being there is no longer a secure aboot checking for VZW approved software.

Factory Reset not Factory Resetting

Hello,
I apologise, this may be a long post, but I do need to explain exactly where I am at otherwise I will get recycled answers that I have already googled and tried and failed.
I recently bought a 'bricked' nexus s from eBay to play with and see what I could do.
It was previously stuck on the Google logo at boot. This is what I did...
1) I was able to boot into the bootloader (volume up + power etc) and unlock the bootloader.
2) I flashed the official bootloader, radio and Jelly bean zip file (from Google) to the phone. It failed at flashing system.img
3) I flashed ICS again failed flashing system.img
4) I flashed Gingerbread, SUCCESS...the phone booted!
5) The phone booted to the lock pattern screen of the previous owner.
6) I contacted the previous owner, and asked for the pattern. He gave me a pattern...it was wrong.
7) Booted into android stock recovery and attempted to factory reset. Booted to lock pattern screen.
8) Flashed clockworkmod recovery and attempted to factory reset. Booted to lock screen.
9) Flashed twrp and attempted to factory reset. Booted to lock screen.
10) In custom recovery, mounted "SD card" to computer, manually deleted former owners stuff, which reappears after un mounting.
11) Copied across various custom roms, all fail to install.
12) Turn to xda...
I just want to clear out the phone and start again.
The model is i9020t. I'm doing everything through fastboot and adb doesn't work because I cant get into the phone to enable debugging.
If anyone has any original ideas, please help.

You can try the Nexus Root Toolkit at: http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
XDA Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
Thanks guys, I tried it but no such luck.
From what I gather the toolkit is basically automating the fastboot and adb commands, as the same problems ensued. Adb couldn't find the phone because there is no way to enable usb debugging, and fastboot did what it did, but userdata is left untouched.

Use the toolkit.. Boot to bootloader (NOT RECOVERY).. Tell the toolkit what version of android you are on and that you are bricked and want to flash to stock.. Change usb ports if it doesn't immediately recognize that you are connected.. It will not need to be debugged to revert to stock..
follow prompts and you are done!
Remember that you will not be rooted and won't have a custom recovery any more and will need to reflash these.. Some roms are pre-rooted..

Gen 1 4.4.4 errors when updating 5.0.1

Hi hope this makes sense to you. X1032 Rooted on 4.4.4 with stock rom. Downloaded update for lollipop however once installing it goes to about 30% in and errors. Phone then boots back into normal phone 4.4.4 saying unsuccessful. Then five times my phone randomly restarts itself into the custom recovery and tries to install the stock update and gives the message shown in the attachments photo. Any reason for this?
Thanks
Try updating with stock recovery and without root. It should work with an unlocked bootloader too.
Thanks for your reply, as this is my first time reverting back to stock recovery and also how to un root the phone what is the best guide for me to follow as i dont want to mess it up. As i do it once ill always remember for future issues. You can probs tell the version of custom recovery via the screenshots.
Many Thanks
To get back to stock, download your phone's stock ROM, extract the recovery.img file and flash it using the fastboot commands "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" without quotes.
There should be an option in the root app to remove itself and unroot the phone.
Thanks alot will do that and let you know how it went weather it works or not.
Thanks again
If you want to maximize the chance that you'll get the OTA update installed, flash all partitions in fastboot. Note that motoboot file may not flash if your phone has a newer bootloader installed.
Hi did what you said on previous post and still errors and boots back to normal phone. Custom recovery removed and unrooted. Unrooted using the supersu app and did full unroot, as for going back to stock recovery couldn't find a stock recovery for this build phone so used the new mototool v3.1 program to flash stock recovery back to kitkat.
Any suggestions?
What is your phone model? Carrier?

Thanks
It looks to me like either ROM would work as they are both for the xt1032 but I can't say for sure as I have no experience with f;ashing either ROM.
Im guessing that if i download the generic rom and their should be a guide on here for flashing it? Am iable to take a backup of the current rom installed incase things mess up?
You could use ADB commands to create a backup but it's not that easy to do in my opinion without a custom recovery.

It doesn't power on or it goes to a loop saying no command?
Try the following:
1. Plug it into the charger
2. Hold the VOL DOWN key
3. While still holding the VOL DOWN key, press and hold the POWER key
4. Hold both keys down for over 120 seconds. This is more than two minutes and will seem like a long time. You might want to time yourself to make sure you hold it longer than two minutes.
5. After holding the keys down for more than two minutes, release them.
6. The Flash Boot screen will display, and the Normal Reboot option will be highlighted
7. Press the VOL UP key and the device will start a normal reboot.
If you have tried the above and it didn't work, try this:
Plug in the phone for 15 minutes.
Proceed to Step 2 above.

power button not working, RMA phone to alcatel - how to unroot, relock bootloader

My phone's power button is not working, i.e., pressing it doesn't do anything. Anybody faced this issue or any suggested solutions. Thanks.
Before I rooted my phone, I booted (not flashed) the TWRP image and took a complete backup - which I think included the stock recovery and the stock unrooted rom.
If I boot up TWRP now, restore that backup, my phone should go back to stock, correct?
Then I should relock the bootloader from fastboot.
I believe after those steps the phone is ready for RMA.
Confirmation please. Thanks.
just find and download alcatel mobile upgrade Q 4.9.2 install it on PC and run..it will take time (about 2-3 hours) but you will end with latest stock device.
