Gen 1 4.4.4 errors when updating 5.0.1 - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi hope this makes sense to you. X1032 Rooted on 4.4.4 with stock rom. Downloaded update for lollipop however once installing it goes to about 30% in and errors. Phone then boots back into normal phone 4.4.4 saying unsuccessful. Then five times my phone randomly restarts itself into the custom recovery and tries to install the stock update and gives the message shown in the attachments photo. Any reason for this?
Thanks

Try updating with stock recovery and without root. It should work with an unlocked bootloader too.

Thanks for your reply, as this is my first time reverting back to stock recovery and also how to un root the phone what is the best guide for me to follow as i dont want to mess it up. As i do it once ill always remember for future issues. You can probs tell the version of custom recovery via the screenshots.
Many Thanks

To get back to stock, download your phone's stock ROM, extract the recovery.img file and flash it using the fastboot commands "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" without quotes.
There should be an option in the root app to remove itself and unroot the phone.

Thanks alot will do that and let you know how it went weather it works or not.
Thanks again

If you want to maximize the chance that you'll get the OTA update installed, flash all partitions in fastboot. Note that motoboot file may not flash if your phone has a newer bootloader installed.

Hi did what you said on previous post and still errors and boots back to normal phone. Custom recovery removed and unrooted. Unrooted using the supersu app and did full unroot, as for going back to stock recovery couldn't find a stock recovery for this build phone so used the new mototool v3.1 program to flash stock recovery back to kitkat.
Any suggestions?

What is your phone model? Carrier?

Xt1032 and 02 pay as you go

Try and find you ROM here: http://www.filefactory.com/folder/c6cdedc45a775d27/?sort=filename&order=ASC&show=100&page=1 There are a few pages of ROMs for the Moto G.

NOTE: the o2 sim card is pay as you go and the phone was origionally on EE as a one month rolling service but with it been unlocked when i passed the phone over to my mam to use she was able to put here o2 pay as you go sim in and carry on using the phone on her origional sim.
Thanks

It looks to me like either ROM would work as they are both for the xt1032 but I can't say for sure as I have no experience with f;ashing either ROM.

Im guessing that if i download the generic rom and their should be a guide on here for flashing it? Am iable to take a backup of the current rom installed incase things mess up?

You could use ADB commands to create a backup but it's not that easy to do in my opinion without a custom recovery.

It doesn't power on or it goes to a loop saying no command?

Try the following:
1. Plug it into the charger
2. Hold the VOL DOWN key
3. While still holding the VOL DOWN key, press and hold the POWER key
4. Hold both keys down for over 120 seconds. This is more than two minutes and will seem like a long time. You might want to time yourself to make sure you hold it longer than two minutes.
5. After holding the keys down for more than two minutes, release them.
6. The Flash Boot screen will display, and the Normal Reboot option will be highlighted
7. Press the VOL UP key and the device will start a normal reboot.
If you have tried the above and it didn't work, try this:
Plug in the phone for 15 minutes.
Proceed to Step 2 above.

Just flash a full rom, it should restore the radio, the recovery, and the OS. Then do a reset to factory defaults if you are paranoid.
Get the proper rom for you phone here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
If you're on T-Mobile, you have an i9020-T, this should work for you. It is the full 2.3.6 image.

Is this also working if you're coming from stock unrooted ICS 4.0.3 ?
And
Is there any risk of loosing IMEI if you're going full ROM ?

I have reverted back from 4.0.3 yesterday by reflashing the full 2.3.6 rom without any issues. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by losing IMEI.
My phone works just fine after doing this (more than once!).

Ok here's my problem i did the ics update earlier before you told me this and still having issues, now when I go to recovery I get a android with his chest open with a red caution sign on it...how could I just format everything, essentially make it the way it was out of box so I could start over...because of all the issues I'm currently having.
When you get to that point, you need to hold down power then press vol up. Then you will be able to flash the zip. You need to put the zip on the phone first though, unless you have CWM recovery, in which case you can mount the sdcard section and move it across then, and flash it after.
OK thanks...Just please let's summarize this
1.You were on I9020T bone stock , unrooted
2.You had GB 2.3.6
3.You updated manually (or OTA) to 4.0.3
4.You decided to revert to GB 2.3.6
5.You used exactly the same method of manual update (stock recovery after copying the .zip file and in this case the full ROM of 2.3.6 to SD)
6.You followed the stock recovery steps and chose the .zip 2.3.6..
7.After everything was setup , you booted into GB 2.3.6 without any problems
Is that right ? or better if you make the exact detailed steps you did to revert to GB 2.3.6 would be apreciated
Thanks

how would I go about flashing the custom recovery? I tried to flash another full rom package with the recovery in it and like i said i got that error...
Do you have a folder in windows where you have been flashing stuff from, using fastboot?
If so, just get this recovery image http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686
Download either the blue or green 5023 image. Doesnt matter which just changes colour of mod place the file in the same folder as the fastboot.
Next, with the phone off and after attaching the phone to USB, turn it on while pressing vol-up and power. You should see the boot option screen, the fastboot screen. Leave the phone there.
Now go back to cmd window in windows, and browse to the folder where you have all the fastboot files and where you have put the above image file. Then type in the following:
fastboot flash recovery <image name.img> (without the < >)
press enter and it'll flash the recovery and then you can install the old version of android

I don't believe I have a folder as such, being a person who is not familiar with the lingo, etc of all this i rooted it with one-click mod, and just flash things through this, are you saying I can flash things externally? sorry to sound like a bum, but i'm trying to understand thanks.
No problem, we're all noobs once, hell i still am and only just coming to terms with it all! Just need to do a bit of researching, but heres the basics...
fastboot lets you flash stuff to the phone from windows, when the phone is attached to the USB and is in fastboot mode (just turned on, from vol-up/pwr).
Can unlock the boot loader and flash recovery images from there. Once thats done, most other stuff can be done from within the new recovery mode, clockworkmod being the one that everyone uses.
over at nexusshacks it's explained really well how to root your phone. And he provides a zip with everything you could want. That zip is the folder I was talking about in the last post. It comes with drivers to install when you first plug the USB in and the PC recognises the phone. Download the pack, install them drivers and then go back to my last post and take it from there
http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/NexusS/rooting/nexussrootnew.zip
EDIT: Also do a full wipe/data reset just before you flash the new rom

I'm using clockwork right now, but it seems to be corrupted, im running 4.0.3 right now on a full rom package, so your saying I should still do this? I think i may have done all that before, as the phone is rooted, but I used the one-click method instead.
Just download that file and then you'll have what you need on your pc to do what i mentioned above. Plug the phone in and reflash the new recovery which will not harm it, and then you'll be able to stick gingerbread or ICS back on. You gotta try things out otherwise you'll not understand what is going on. I dont know of any one click thing that will let you go back to default as it was before. After it flashes the new recovery, scroll down to "recovery" on the screen and press the power button, dont restart the system.
In hindsight, while the one click methods are easy to use, theyre getting used by people that dont do the necessary research to learn about the rooting and flashing process. This means you end up skipping so much that you learn about the whole rooting and flashing proocess when doing it manually, which in turn means you have more trouble getting out of it if you want it back to the way it was! No offence intended here, but you just need to man up and do it! All will be well

[Q]Help: Can't change custom rom

Hi,
I am new to this site and fairly new to rooting and stuff and need assistance with my Sony Xperia S (LT26i). If i am not in the right pace for this please point me in the right direction. I have installed a custom rom and custom recovery which let me upgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.3 which was working fine then when I flashed a different custom rom after that to get 4.4.1 I lost access to my custom recovery. The main issue is that I need help with changing the custom rom I have installed, for some reason I can no longer boot into TWRP or CWM (using power + vol up), the phone simply boots normally and skips the whole process therefore I cannot flash anything. I have looked for hours over the net on how to get into recovery but could not find a solution.
I also assumed that when installing custom recovery and custom roms that you would need to be rooted but when I check with Root Checker it says that I am not. So any assistance would be great

Here is 4.0.4
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_d8uWGbkaetLThpYzEwZUh5aTg/edit
steps:
how to install the newest Android 4.0.4 for Sony XPERIA S LT26i
a) first of all, check your firmware version (if you already have the newest one, you do not need this tutorial)
b) download and install latest Flashtool from here (mirrors Google Drive or Mega)
c) download also latest Android 4.0.4 (mirror) for Sony XPERIA S LT26i
d) paste the ftf file downloaded in step c) to folder „Firmware“ included in the XPERIA Flashtool
e) open the XPERIA Flashtool, click on flash and choose downloaded firmware, than click ok. Important - if you do not want to delete any data of your phone, just uncheck flashing userdata.sin file. All data will remain in your phone, but sometimes it can cause additional troubles. So it is better (and I recommend that) to do the backup of your personal data, than proceed with clean instalation and then restore your personal data.
f) turn off your phone and when Flashtool shows pop up window, connect phone to PC with holding volume down button
g) after few minutes all is done and your phone gets the new firmware
Here you got 3 ways to update good luck
http://androidteen.com/xperia-s-lt26i-update-to-android-4-1-2-jelly-bean-official-firmware-6-2-b-1-96/

The clue's in the error message - you don't have the required drivers installed.
There's a directory named "drivers" under the main flashtool dir. Run flashtool-drivers.exe and install the appropriate drivers. I think "Common Drivers Viskan Board" is the one you need. I ended up installing all of them to get it to flash (which took ages).
Ok so I got it to work, all I had to do was hold down the vulumn down button for like an extra 5 seconds while it began to flash
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it

Hello again
So I have successfully rooted the device and installed TWRP but as before I cannot seem to get into the recovery mode, when I boot the phone with "power and vol +" it doesn't boot into recovery but instead there is a quick glimpse of what I think is the recovery mode (I cant actually see it but something happens for a split second) but it flashes past way too fast then goes to the normal Sony logo and continues booting normally. I have tried this like at least 20 times in the last 2 weeks and have researched other ways to boot into recovery but I can't seem to find anyone with an answer. Do you know what could fix this? Or is there a way to boot into recovery using a computer?

Are you saying you are trying to flash a recovery or are you trying to GET to the stock recovery? If you are trying to get to the stock recovery, the key presses to get to it have changed.
Your best bet is to power off your phone. Then, press and hold power+vol up for a few seconds until you see the menu come up. Then, press vol down to highlight Recovery and then press the vol up button.
Eventually, you'll see the "Dead Andy". From there, press and hold vol down+vol up+power. You might have to do it a couple of times. Eventually, you'll be in the recovery but for the XT926, it's kind of hard to read because for some reason, they decided to make it dim.
No (but thanks anyway). What I tried to was only to install a KK recovery for CM11.
I successed but I had 2 problems mixed: the 1st one was that the Linux version of fastboot (or mfastboot) did'nt work with the new bootloader. Both were complaining about "(bootloader) Variable not supported! ". Had to find some old laptop with Windows installed to use it to flash the recovery without error.
But even then if I just let the phone reboot, I would'nt get the new recovery (just the stock one after the keypress you speak about). I had to go straight from bootloader screen to the recovery (by manually rebooting) to get it work. Looks like the standard boot just restored the stock recovery each time I tried.
Thanks anyway, it's working now.

Variable not supported comes up under some Windows, but it usually still works.
You never go straight to the bootloader when you reboot. You have to reboot the phone (or turn it off first) and then press and hold vol up+power. Then, from there, you use vol down to select recovery and then press vol up.
It never boots directly into the recovery unless you tell it to via an ADB command or from within a custom ROM that allows it.
Keep in mind, the stock recovery will override the custom recovery if you don't immediately boot back into recovery. Flash recovery, when that's done, press power to shutdown, and use the method Bolski described to boot into recovery.

You say that if you don't boot right into recovery, the stock one will overwrite CWM/TWRP. So i understand that, after very reboot you must reflash recovery if you want to use it again.
Or am I missing something?

It won't reflash every time. You only need to boot straight into recovery the first time, so that the update binary completes. After the first time, you'll be good.

Unless something has changed, version 6. requires that you flash a special kernel before you can root your phone otherwise you are as you are now, stuck in a boot loop. You should probably download the factory image from Google, and then flash the system image to get rid of what you have done.. Perhaps then your phone will start normally

Unless something has changed, version 6. requires that you flash a special kernel before you can root your phone otherwise you are as you are now, stuck in a boot loop. You should probably download the factory image from Google, and then flash the system image to get rid of what you have done.. Perhaps then your phone will start normally

Also, you mentioned a 'special kernel' what does that mean. All i want to do to my device is install cyanogenmod 12 and for that i believe it needs to be rooted, so i am really confused. What should I do know
I'm having this same problem, and unfortunately, when I start the phone on fastboot, I can not access the recovery mode in order to upload a factory image of nexus 5.
I used the new tool available her for quick flash, and now, I don't have a phone.
First, don't panic. Your phone is still very easy to recover. Unfortunately I can't get you a complete walkthrough here (for now at least), so I'll give you the main idea and you'll have to do your homework (as maybe you should have done before).
1. You need to get fastboot working on your computer. It's included in the Android sdk package, but there might be some easier way to get it. Google it. You might need drivers for your pc too. Google it as well.
2. Then you need to get into fastboot mode on your phone. To do it, hold down power button AND volume down button until it gets into fastboot mode. You will see an android on his back with the cover open. At this point, connect your phone to your pc, open a terminal on your pc and type "fastboot devices" without the quotes "". It should find your phone if fastboot is working. If it doesn't work go back to step 1.
3. Download TWRP recovery on your pc and place the img file in the same folder as your fastboot executable (not mandatory but easier). It can be found here https://dl.twrp.me/hammerhead/
4. Always in fastboot mode, type "fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.1-hammerhead.img" assuming you downloaded that file, which you should have by the way. It should install fine. If you haven't placed the file in the same directory as your fastboot executable, you will need to provide the path to your img file as well.
5. Then use the volume rocker to switch between modes and choose reboot recovery.
6. You should now be in TWRP recovery. At this point, download a custom kernel (anyone found on xda for hammerhead should do) and push it to your phone. It should be fairly simple with TWRP. Then flash your new kernel using install. It should help you get your phone booting normally. Alternatively, you can download a custom ROM like cm12.1 and flash it altogether. It will install everything needed for your phone to boot up too. Beware if flashing a ROM though, I strongly advice you to do a factory reset before flashing it. You will find that option in the wipe menu.
Hope it helps, let me know if you need further assistance.
Yesterday, I have tried everything to have my computer to recognize the "fastboot" command, and I installed like 2 or 3 different programs for that. With my old Windows 7, I have been able to push a flashed image to fix this issue, using the fastboot command, but with Windows 10, it's always telling me it's not a valid command. I'll keep trying it, otherwise, i'll have to "resurrect" my old Windows XP computer.
Also, I noticed now that, while trying to install the fastboot, as per some files that I could download, but no file has been copied into my computer, not even if I run it as admin.
fixed. but no RECOVERY mode options....
Hi Guys,
Thank you very much for the help, I have finally recovered the phone and running android 6.0 MRA58N but it is not rooted. Now if you don't mind could you teach me how to root because i have checked lots of videos and tuts but none worked for me...
IMPORTANT:
when i am in recovery mode why cannot I access options even when i press volume up + power button and release them at the same time...????
Thanks in advance.
Just flash a custom recovery via fastboot. Just make sure your bootloader is unlocked. Can't link though.

MATE 7 not booting

Hi, need some urgent help here.
I was trying to install a custom rom, so I unlocked first the bootloader, then flashed twrp 3.0.2 for Android 5.1 and with it I flashed KangVip rom (porto from honor 6).
Problem was it didn't boot, just black screen.
So I supposed the problem was with the rom so I flashed via fastboot the aosp 6, obviously with same results.
I tried lot of stuff (twrp 2.8.x.x, reinstall stock firmware, restore twrp backup of stock full firmware and so on - I did almost everything I could do) and now I'm with a Huge problem: no huawei logo at start, just a white screen and nothing happen. I have twrp 3.0.2 for 5.1 installed right now but I can't install stock recovery.
Please help me, what do I gotta do?

the ported rom is based on Android 6.0 you have Android 5.1 youk should flash 5.1 based rom..
it's good to flash stock and update official to b560 or b571 depending on which region to have then flash twrp recovery and then flash desire rom..

Thx for this.
But I have a problem, I can't install stock recovery and if I try to flash the .img files extracted from update.app nothing happens.
Also, I still have that problem with huawei logo disappeared and a blank white screen instead.

boot into bootloader and flash stock recovery but if you know what exactly firmware was you have(bxxx) then no need to flash recovery just put update.app to your sd card and then force update three buttons combination (volume both and power) turn off it remove data cable then press these three buttons it'll go in recovery sometime but try two or three times(in recovery turn off device) and try again if that method not work you should flash stock recovery to do so and if it didn't go to bootloader(fastboot) then connect data cable and then press vol- and power it'll go to bootloader in bootloader flash stock recovery then force update your device....

Hope you can help me out here...I had just gotten my HAM7 for a couple of days. Was on 4.4.2 B120, was able to get it up to B326. Just yesterday I attempted to flash up to B331 and it succeeded according to the "local update" option. Then it went on boot loop. I tried doing the force 3-button option and that worked to the point of saying it succeeded and will reboot. Now I'm stuck on Ascend Mate logo. I can no longer get into factory option mode (V+Power), only fastboot mode. Also, I can't do force update no more so I can't try any other "update.app" unless I'm missing something here.
Any help in getting this unit at least back to working condition will be a BIG help. I just received this two days ago.
Thx!!!!

Yes, bootloader is unlocked. FYI, I can't do Vol+ Power or 3-button force. I have no idea what went wrong after the B331 update.app flash. It said successful then boot loop after. I have looked all over the forums and tried everything from flashing C900B300 rollback to try and get 4.4.2 that I started out with, but I really don't know which firmware to start with. The last update.app files I was using was the European variants. Phone was originally locked to Ecuador MoviStar network at B120SP04, then I flashed up to B324 5.1.1. Rooted and then wanted to upgrade to B331 so I unrooted and flashed. Now I'm stuck.

Thank you very much....hope that will solve the boot issue and bring this unit back to life
Alright, so I've given up complete hope that I can get my unit back up and running again. I've tried so many ways already with no success (fastboot/adb, force upgrade, etc.,), and even tried to copy my second HAM7 images (via sdk tools) and to no avail.
The thing I'm trying to understand is where exactly do I start with trying to revive? When I first got this device from eBay, it was apparently still on "MoviStar" Telefonica-Spain network so my network bars showed "R" for roaming. Somehow, I was able to flash it from being on V100R001C00B120SP04a and upgrade to B127>B145>B324 which made me able to use my own service normally. It worked fine and I was even able to root it. Decided to do a last upgrade to B331 and while the local update option showed it as successfully installed, it went into boot loop ever since. Hence, I used European firmwares for most of the flashing. My second mate was on B145 and I was able to get that to B331, which is running fine right now.
ATM, I am ONLY able to do Volume-/Power to get into fastboot.
Doesn't work:
- V+/Power (stock recovery)
- V-+/Power (3-button force)
What works:
- V-/Power with USB for fastboot
*Bootloader is unlocked, but I do believe that after flashing the last firmware of B331, I may have done a factory wipe, which probably reset the USB debugging option as well. So, I'm sure I'm stuck with a device that just might be flashed on the wrong firmware and is factory reset which prevents me from flashing a custom rom or even the stock rom???
Any last advice I would be so thankful for...still waiting on the link for KangVip rom from (fazi2015)
All the best...

Okay, so final result is I'm stuck on a frozen logo now. The twrp bat file again showed success in flashing and rebooted the device, but I'm hung on the "Huawei Ascend" logo. I have to pull the battery to shut it off, otherwise it stays on. So I'm now sure that it's a hard bricked device since I did the stupid thing of factory resetting which probably reset the usb debug...making it almost impossible to flash any firmware now.
Thanks for the help anyways...I really appreciate it. Gonna throw this up on eBay and see if anyone wants it for parts

I know it's annoying but last time I research more and guide you I was have same problem don't give up....
I send you recovery flash in fastboot no need of usb debugging usb debugging need for adb not for fastboot in fastboot flash recovery by your self download it
https://mega.co.nz/#!GRw0CZjQ!iZllDkA6yJeWk7iEA4vEVA94r2nM_YjAuiS8B9IZdm0
then extract the zip go to resource and hold shift and left click then select open command port here then power off device completely boot into fastboot (bootloader) connect the device to pc and in command port type
fastboot flash recovery twrp_2_7.img
after that type
fastboot reboot and hold the volume- button of device it'll boot into recovery if you success then reply..
I've noticed two things when flashing KK or LP. On KK, the phone does a constant boot loop with Huawei logo (on off on off), but on LP the Huawei logo hangs...it doesn't boot loop. Is this an indication or just a fault with both OS?
