X265 playback on nexus 5? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings!
Anyone know of a way to get x265 playback working properly on the nexus 5?
Ive tested most of the android players , mxplayer seems to work best but struggles in 1080p at points.
MXplayer seems to work a bit better than KODI on the nexus 5.
Mxplayer in SW mode plays it , HW mode i get a black screen , HW+ does not work at all.
Android video player seems to play full speed but i have no option for audio , its always mute on the files ive tried.
KODI on my pc plays all my files a+
I noticed an HEVC player (HODI) on the store but its 15$ and has 1 rating , and its a bad one.
Anyone have any experience on this? I found a codec pack for this for android but seems to be for x86 only , and i also have no idea how to use it.
Any information would be appreciated - thanks!
As info i am using android 5.0 xtraslim on my nexus 5
Edit : This is the link i found the codec on , seems to be a demo only.
http://xhevc.com/en/downloads/downloadCenter.jsp
Also as a side note i have the same issues on my nexus player.

Does changing the "Use NuPlayer" option in Developer section give any difference to the playback?

Indeed , i didnt know that was an option , i just checked and that seems to be on by default.
I just turned it off and tried.
It seems to actually run better , i shall test this when @ home and have more time ,appreciate the suggestion!
Edit ; actually i tried a bit more it doesnt seem to have changed anything. Will keep tinkering and update this if i find something else - it seems when a lot of things are going on it slows down the FPS of the video

Hi ajeet,
thanks for the effort, i noticed some bugs on my htc desire (oxygen rom , android 2.3 )
it skipped the first 30 seconds of my video
audio/video wasnt in sync (maybe cause of the skip? )
subs didnt show up
some infos about the video:
video: MPEG4 (H264) 712x480 29,97 fps
audio: AAC 48000Hz stereo
Subtitle: Advanced SubStation Alpha
//edit:
forgot to extract the mplayer subtitle folder ><
subs are working now, even though the progress bar makes it impossible to read them ^^
best regards
Kemo
Great job, I tried an MKV BDRip with MPEG-4 video and AC3 audio. Works flawlessly on my [email protected]
However, in the subtitle there are "á é í ó ő ú ű" letters and instead of these, there are some weird symbols shown. I tried this with SRT and SSA subs saved as UTF-8, but no luck.
Atm, this looks promising, so keep it up.
+1
Edit: please, for heaven's sake, avoid RapidShare. But if you like RS, then use multiupload. Thanks
Option key will hide the statusbar/seekbar
i try avc + aac mp4 (640*360 + 44Khz/128kb) on my milestone eclair
it too slow so not sync and i try the stop the play it crashed
Nice work. I only have flvs on my phone right now, but they play very well. quite responsive too.
Could the controls hide on screen tap as well as menu button?
Also, how mplayer is this? I realize that the frontend is going to be original work, but wonder how much porting you had to do for the player itself.

You can use option key to hide menu(s) . I have used sdl ported by Pelya(commander genius) for audio output and written video driver for android from scratch.

So due to some bug neon acceleration is not working with this version. I will fix that then you can watch h264 w/o any issue.
screen shots would be cool and if you can get some of the gpu/cpu accelerations combos working on higher end devices like Hummingbird and Powervr.
Very nice it works even on the archos tablet and without any stutering or delays. Keep up the good work.
This is the first non stock media player that works good for general use.

great player, best i've found on the market yet.
It's perfect for my Legend ! the best player for the video quality.
And subtitles work fine. The only "problem" is that I always have the interface at the top and bottom of the video. So, I can't read subtitles.
I tried to open settings but it does't exist.
Great job anyway
The best working video player on my X10. Just one problem I am from Slovenia, any chance for Slovenian, Croatian,,,,letters support.
Thanks
OK, I have tested streaming from an URL (Mpeg-TS-stream - dreambox)
1) on my HTC HD2 running HD Desire: works although there are some delay/lag. Also problems with syncronization of video/audio
2) on my Samsung i5800: I get pictures and then it pauses for 2-3 seconds and I get new frames and then it stops again and so on. Audio works without breaking. Perhaps its processor is not fast enough to handle a stream with a ratio of 1:1?
3) the preferences button seems disabled.
I look forward to next releases.

can somebody tell me what does it mean to stream a url? help
Streaming from an URL means playing (therefore sending) a file (be it video, music...) over the net on a remote device.
(Trying to keep the definition simple).

I've got the same problem with alot of videos.
I tried mx video player, BS player and some other players. At first the video works fine and suddenly the player craches (sometimes without a warning).. the craches also seem random.. sometimes I can watch for like 30 minutes before it craches and sometimes it happens within 5 minutes. Very annoying!
I get the idea that it's not the player but android or even the hardware that causes this problem
Ok so there are a lot of us with this annoying problem. i was just watching 3rd rock from the sun and it crashed for like 7 times.
I also have mx player and tried almoust all players there is. Funny is that i had some chinees tablet before asus with ics 4.03 but watch movies with no problem.
So is this asus problem or what?
Just test it overhere on mxplayer and mine also stopped playing but no crashes. Mxplayer just went back to the menu. Tested with a 720p xvid

Did you guys check with other videos? Will test some more here, maybe it's a codec issue...
Have you guys tried doing a cold reboot or clearing the app data? Mine works flawlessly with different types of videos (mp4, mkv, etc), 720p 1080p. Try my suggestions then report back. Is there anyway I could try one of the videos thats failing?

Right now i'm trying the same file but with BS player lite now. It's been playing for 476 minutes without any problems or jerks. Difference with mxplayer is that BS plays the file with HW acceleration on and MX says it can't play the file wit HW acceleration, so it switches to SW.
Do u guys have the the other mxplayer apps like arm something ....u know what im talking about?? I think those arw codecs for the player
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
Yep you're right but mx player asks for missing codecs so no need to install unless it asks you to do so.
I will reset tablet later couse installin applications again will take allot af time. currently i have for 10 gb applications so...
Funny think is that a lot of movies play with no problem but there are some series that video app just shuts down, without any error. I just cant belive that i payed 500 eur for tablet and video is not working propely.
I also installed all codecs, nothing changed. As i sad i also tried like 5 video apps, same thing, so i guess i its some bug in tablet.
Hey heres a question, is the media on the actual tablet, or is it on an external drive; such as a camera, usb flash drive or hard drive? and if so, do these external devices have fast enough file transfer speeds (expecially if the video is hd) to support the playback. Try copying a video over to the tablet's storage and try that. might solve the problem. if that is indeed the problem either transfer over the files to the TF300 every time or get another storage device with faster file transfers. I had the same symptoms when trying to play video off a camera's SD card.
hope it helps.

[Bug report] HW and HW+ decoder lags on some videos

1. Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 wifi (SM-T520)
2. Android version: Kitkat 4.4.4
3. Official CyanogenMod 11 nightly 11-20141209
4. When I play some videos and using HW and HW+ decoder, I experience video is out of sync. It looks like there's frame dropping. Problem also exists on my Xperia V with latest CM. I use on both devices custom codecs from this forum. While using SW decoder everything is fine.
Logs are here

Yeah, I was constantly having the same bug on my stock Android 5.01 Nexus 7 2013. HW mode is not even available for most of my high quality mkvs, while in HW+ mode playback is choppy. In the end the solution was painful, but simple: I gave up Mx player pro and returned to bs player pro. Playback is a lot smoother now with HW mode in bs player. After more than a year with mx player I must say it's an extremely overrated piece of software with a non-existant price/performance ratio. While I like a lot it when it works, it has too many annoying bugs to recommend it anymore.

I just checked BS Player (free version) and on my Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 it was just as choppy as MX Player. Maybe there's a bug in CM 11?
Did it previously work on older versions of your ROM? If yes, then it's likely a ROM issue.
@Mihai B mind posting the media info of the problem videos in question? Was this on stock ROM for the 2013 N7?

Yes, I am using stock Android 5.01 ROM with a Nexus 7 2013 WiFi only, 32 GB, rooted with chainfire's autoroot, stock recovery, waited for OTA to arrive, factory reset with clear cache partition after applying the update. Worth mentioning that on KitKat 4.4.4. playback was much more smoother on the same files, with the same settings in MX Player. I only have a few applications, nothing that could conflict with MX Player. Here you will find an example of a file lagging when played. Basically every high quality mkv stutters like hell. If you need a file, I can upload it somewhere.
Thank you for your help!

Is it happens with HW?
If it's so,
Have you tried the same video on Stock Player?
The same should happen with stock player too as HW basically uses android's standard mediaplayer interface.
So, if it stutters on HW, Possibly there might be some issues with in the rom itself.
Have you tried SW decoder?
It might work well since it's based on ffmpeg
HW mode doesn't work at all (mx player says decoder is not supported or something like this), therefore stock player is unable to play it, too. Battery drain is huge with SW mode, what's the purpose of buying applications like MX player that offer accelerated HW decoding then? But just FYI, software mode plays the file flawlessly. The ROM is the purest Android experience one can get right now, so this should not be a problem either. If HW+ mode doesn't work as it should even on stock Android, with developer previews available since months, I don't want to think what will happen with custom ROMs.
We are far away from highly compressed formats like divx, xvid or wmv, high definition content is the present and it seems Mx player with its HW+ decoder can't keep the pace.
I wrote about these problems ever since Android 5 was officially launched a month ago and still no fix was issued.

HW+ uses the same native codecs to decode. Only difference is that H/W uses android media framework and mx player uses its own media framework which itself depends on another android library. So, if any issues on codec configuration will affect both.
MX Player was working well on L preview (except the last one in which google hasn't released the sources).
Do you think your device doesn't has enough power to decode a 720p video natively?. Then, have ever thinked about why your stock player can't play the video?
Just google. MX Payer is not the only product. You will see the very large list of complaints all around the world. You are supposed to blame on Google for the semi baked ROM rather than MX Player.

Thank you for your answer, Ktsamy.
My device is powerful enough to play a 720p video, as in KitKat there were no problems in doing this. I know about the issues mentioned in the link you posted, but they refer to Android 5.0, and as far as I know, this is one of the reasons Google halted 5.0 OTAs, fixed some of the bugs reported by early adopters and then updated most of the devices directly to 5.01. The video issues found in Nexus 7 2013 were supposed to be fixed in 5.01.
So what has to be done? Should we all patiently wait for Google to eventually fix the native android codecs/libraries problems you say they generated in Lollipop? And while we are waiting, applications like MX Player and other similar products are right now useless for the unlucky ones who have Android L installed?
I mean: ok, we do have a problem, but what about everyone (Google, paid app developers) working on a solution instead of blaming each other?

all lollipop devices aren't affected.
Reportedly Google is aware of this issue.
second thing, Since Google is controlling the ROM, app developers can't fix the issue lies on ROM. But, developers can look for temporary workarounds to resolve the issue. But. No guarantee that all bugs will have some workarounds.
Well, stock 5.0 ROM for Nexus devices is fine, so it might just be a recompile or other issue for 5.0.1. @bleu8888 mind taking a look to see if it's just a simple versioning issue with 5.0.1? The updated OTA was released a few days ago for Nexus devices.

CDB-Man, the problem was present on 5.00 as well. I flashed the factory image, posted info about the stuttering in the Android 5 topic, Ktsamy pointed me and others affected by this problem to the same link he provided yesterday. In the mean time Google halted the OTAs for 5.00, fixed some bugs, including the one with the video lag present on the Nexus 7 2013 and directly released OTA 5.01. Unfortunately the stuttering in playing high quality mkvs is still present in MX Player, no matter if the ROM is stock 5.00 or 5.01.

If it's fixed it supposed to playable in H/W decoder or by Stock Video Player. But, none of these are working.
Can you do the following?
Long Press the video, Play using H/W decoder. if it says H/W decoder is not supported or automatically switches to S/W, close the playback. Collect the logs & upload here.
BTW, According to leaks Google is planning for another major update to 5.1 in Feb 15 to address the major bugs exists in lollipop

As I have said already, the issue doesn't appear on all nexus devices. Most of the reports are from Nexus 7.
Thanks again, ktsamy, for your help. I was not very sure about how to collect the log, hope it is okay. It said decoder not supported, then switched to sw.
Same here on stock 5.0.1. But the same player is smooth on 4.4.4. So I guess it's Google's problem.
Ktsamy, have you found the time to check the log I have posted a few days ago?
I have an nvidia shield tablet LTE and can confirm HW+ makes video stutter on my device. Was working perfectly prior to the lollipop update. Hope Google, MX Devs or whoever can resolve the issue. Noticed that SW mode is a HUGE battery drain!
I guess it seems that Google really rushed the release of Lollipop.

I've tried some high resolution videos on Nexus 7 2013 5.0.1 but can't reproduce this issue.
So it looks not like happening with all videos.
So I've tried download one of files having this issue -- The.Secret.Life.of.Walter.Mitty.2013.BluRay.720p.x264.DTS-HDWinG.mkv -- but it is taking forever.
Would someone send download link or torren file having enough seed?

Would someone send download link or torren file having enough seed?

[Q] Nexus 5 choppy video playback with Google Photos

Hey,
So I'm on a stock 5.1.1 and updated to the latest Google Photos version, which I think screws with my devices HW acceleration. Basically , after updating I can't watch any HD videos without the frames stuttering, the screen sometimes blacks out in middle of viewing videos as well. Searching around I found that more people experience this, but it isn't that widespread. The problem goes away if I revert the update. Any help for additional workarounds would be appreciated.
Thanks
I was able to find another solution to this. With the latest photos app running, I went in to developer options and switched from NuPlayer to AwesomePlayer making things working smoothly again when playing videos.
If anybody can check what player they're running after updating the app and tell me if they experience video playback stutter with it, I'd appreciate it.
Seems like Google switched between default players on the different OS updates, I'm wondering if they've done the same and it didn't register or something.
Thanks.

This worked for me also. Nice to see confirmation.

Video player with FULL brightness support (Android TV is too dark)

I have a detailed question with also some detailed answer, yes, "answer" but I'm looking for alternatives because the current solution doesn't make me happy.
My Android TV Box (Radioshack 6.0 4k android box p212) works pretty well, image quality is nice but the dark parts of the video are too dark. Brightness on the TV can't fix it, already tried every single option on the Android Box with no luck.
Solutions if you are experiencing the same issue of dark video: is rooting the device but unfortunately after many days searching over the web and trying diff methods, I just can't, my device doesn't even appear on the web as having options for rooting. This solution involves editing the Build.prop file. Depending on your device, the editing to be done will be different (you can search the web, there are many tutorials about this). My problem: I can't root my device!!! And the specific model of my TV Box brings only a few results. If you can do it you are luck, me? unlucky, but my device was on a very low price so that's why I bought it.
I found tutorials about flashing the devices with diff roms, but so far I can't find any single rom that can be applied to my TV Box, remember its not just about trying any, it's about first finding the right one.
Kodi solves the issue. Do you know Kodi? it's a media player and manager, it allows me to adjust the brightness and contrast per video and for the whole APP, it really works, and you have to disable the hardware acceleration for this to work. So yes this is a solution. Unfortunately it doesn't make me happy because Kodi has some issues, performance problems, the video library grows and grows (pretty well known issues in the community) and makes things slow, so it works but I'm not happy.
Unfortunately that trick of brightness control doesn't work on other video players, I've downloaded and tried many, really, not even VLC. The brightness modifications don't affect the video playback at all. VLC and MX Player are my favorites but none of them can adjust the brightness despite playing with all the preferences I could find.
If you are experiencing the same issues probably what I posted above will help you depending on your device. In my case I'm still stuck with the brightness problem, using Kodi "solves it" but since them I'm stuck facing specific Kodi issues (starting to hate it). I would love to find:
- specific info on how to root or flash my TV Box (Radioshack 6.0 4k android box identified as model p212)
- information on other video apps that allow FULL brightness control over the video playback
- I would also love tricks to make VLC work as it should (full brightness adjust), as explained above this doesn't work in my case
There are some apps to adjust the gama, RGB and brightness of the device, unfortunately when I use them VLC refuses to work.
Any clue, hint or advice will be appreciated.
Try TMPlayer it is a simple player but has brightness, contrast, saturation and hue control at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.droiding.ingdroid.ttmplayer
