Hey,
So I'm on a stock 5.1.1 and updated to the latest Google Photos version, which I think screws with my devices HW acceleration. Basically , after updating I can't watch any HD videos without the frames stuttering, the screen sometimes blacks out in middle of viewing videos as well. Searching around I found that more people experience this, but it isn't that widespread. The problem goes away if I revert the update. Any help for additional workarounds would be appreciated.
Thanks
I was able to find another solution to this. With the latest photos app running, I went in to developer options and switched from NuPlayer to AwesomePlayer making things working smoothly again when playing videos.
If anybody can check what player they're running after updating the app and tell me if they experience video playback stutter with it, I'd appreciate it.
Seems like Google switched between default players on the different OS updates, I'm wondering if they've done the same and it didn't register or something.
Thanks.

This worked for me also. Nice to see confirmation.

Hello,
I just updated my tf101 to ics (ota official). On Honeycomb I think the YouTube app was the app I used to most, it could play HD content at full fps and there were no problems. Fast forward to ICS where every video either skips or lags when a lot of things are moving around on the screen. This has made the youtube app unusable.
When I still had CWM i was also using ICS roms, but they had the same problem, so, I went back to honeycomb and it worked fine again. For some reason I thought the custom roms were to blame so I tried the official ota.
So to my question, is anyone else having these problems? And if so did you solve it? Also, is there an alternative to the youtube app? (I have tried the web version but it's waaay slower than the app at playing video).
Thanks!
No problems here. You could try to goto Manage Apps and clear the cache for YouTube...and then if that doesn't work also clear the data. That would be the first step in trouble shooting.
for my case, is the 720p mkv files lagging, for youtube i notice some stuttering , not anything that obvious though. BTW many have reported video performance dropped dramatically on the ICS
So there is no way to fix this? I tried to download a trailer and it lags as well. So it is not just the youtube app. Shouldn't the tf101 handle videos pretty good?
I tried everything and finally...
I uninstalled adobe flash player, and it stopped skipping around. Wondering if there is a system conflict on this tablet as there is sometimes w/ desktop versions of google and the conflicts between shockwave and flash player... oh well, it worked. Super frustrating.

Everything is stock on my phone and I'm running YouTube 5.2.27 with the new KitKat OS. I'm experiencing a bit of stutter/jitter when playing videos on YouTube in both low and high quality. The motion of the video isn't quite fluid. When playing the same vids through Freedi YT player or through the browser, I don' t see this issue at all but I love watching vids on the app the most, but can't stand the stutter.
Is anyone else experiencing the same issues? Sorry if this has been answered, I just couldn't find anything about it asides from the thread above me.
Having the same trouble, any solutions?

Are you running on 3G, LTE, Wifi? and it has to do with the version of youtube. Currently unnoticed with Franco kernel but may have somthing to do with the release build. Try clearing data/cache to see if that works. If not, uninstall the updates to factory to see if problem persists since that version. Reinstall again and try that as well.

What's up,
So I've had my Tablet Z for just about a month and the only real complaint I have is the YouTube app video quality is pretty bad! What little setting adjustments there are don't do anything to help. It looks like my player is playing lo-res 480p video on an HD screen even when HD is highlighted as the play option.
Netflix, Sony Video player and inline/embedded videos all look great so I know it's specific to the YouTube player.
Hoping that the update that's due out this week will alleviate the problem, part of the update addresses the YouTube app. I didn't know that manufacturer's had their own versions of the Google core apps, learn something new everyday.
Anybody else?
Thanks.
They don't have their own version of the apps. They can't. Youtube, like many other apps, is closed source. The fix includes something in the file system related to YT, but not the app itself. I guess the update is related to videos most of the times stop working in the middle of it for no reason. Embed with a browser, and other apps, work just fine.

Check out the app called viral it solves the problem plus you can use it in floating mode or minimize it to play while screen is off when I started using viral it could go to 1080p which looks gorgeous on this device but for some reason I can only choose up to 720p but it's not tacky like it is on the official app

I think it runs at least 720p on supported videos... I think there is a hack to force use 1080p, not sure...
So I uninstalled the most recent update and the video quality dramatically improves! I'll stay with 4.5.17 until they have another major updates.I'll miss some of the cooler navigation features of the new version, but is rather have the picture quality back.
I'm surprised I'm there's only one this affected.

You're not the only one.... Same issues here, as well as on my dad's XTZ and my Nexus 5.... Seems like the new version of the app doesn't upscale from 720p to 1080p very nicely at all.....
Lately it seems that my stock Note 5 plays videos once out of every 5-6 tries. It struggles to play videos I recorded too. Most of the time when I try to play a YouTube video it will play the first few frames then starts to stutter then stop playing altogether. I thought it was a YouTube thing so I uninstalled it's updates, cleared data and disabled it, then re-enabled it, updated it and still had issues. I also have noticed I have the same issue with Snapchat, Facebook, TheCHIVE and other apps (basically any videos it tries to play). I'm running stock 5.1.1. I read somewhere about going into developer settings and turning off NuPlayer and use AwesomePlayer instead. I tried that but it yielded the same result. Does anyone have any other ideas? I really don't want to wipe the phone.

I have already post there, but there hasnt been a response. I dont think its a specific device issue. It seems to be more of an OS issue. There has to be some things to attempt to fix this...
So basically, when I watch videos in the YouTube app on my XZs the video will play fine for a few seconds and after that it becomes horrendously laggy and stuttery. A quick fix is to just reload the app by turning the phone on and off again but this doesn't fix the issue in the long run. I haven't had experiences like this on any other apps, at least not to this scale.
Using a modded YouTube app like YouTube Vanced doesn't solve the issue either, so the issue probably lies within the app, but seeing as no one else on the internet seems to have the same issue it might have something to do with my particular phone as well.
The ROM I'm using is the AOSP 8.1 from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xzs/how-to/aosp-xperia-xzs-g8232-8-1-t3834174
however I've had the same issue while used OmniROM as well. It's also rooted with Magisk.
Fixes anyone?
