Q&A for [RECOVERIES][P31xx] TWRP | PhilZ Touch | CWM
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [RECOVERIES][P31xx] TWRP | PhilZ Touch | CWM. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.

Encryption using older TWRP (until 2.8.1.1)
I just tried the first time to encrypt my Tab. I read about errors people faced before, so here's a small guide how to go on:
Backup all important stuff! We need to format the device!
Make sure using my TWRP 2.8.1.1
Wipe -> Advanced Wipe:
Cache
Dalvic
System
Data
Wipe -> Format Data -> Type yes to confirm
This is the most important step! It will keep some space for the footer! Without that encryption is not possible!

What ROM did you used? I currently use 10.1.3-p3110. CM 11 was never released for the p3110.

Using TWRP or normal boot?
I hope this post goes to the right place. Just logged in to make my first post here. Been using the forums to find all my answers in the past.

now i updated my jelly bean tab2 with lollipop, only because of your help.
Was the PhilZ Touch images removed? Unless I've skipped over the download links, there's no build files located here: androidfilehost(dot)com/?w=files&flid=25703
Have they been pulled back, or..?
Install TWRP over CWM.
Hello everybody! please help me. i'm a new user android. !
Plz tell me how to install TWRP 2.8.4.0 over CWM 6.0.5.1 [Galaxy tab 2 P3110]? because i'm in Omni 4.4.4 nightly rom and it required TWRP for system update.
Give me a step ! thank everybody for support !
Just flash TWRP.zip through your present recovery or TWRP.tar via Mobile Odin. You can use also standard Odin to do that. All you need is to download proper version of TWRP and check it's md5 signature. It's hard to mess up with this.
If you need a step-by-step guide just search. There are plenty of them in this forum, on YouTube, everywhere.

Can TWRP be used for generic Android devices like SmartTV boxes?
I have downloaded TWRP to a few machine from Google Play Store and some are asking to do the mod to the SD card but I'm worried it might brick the devices.

Short answer: No - these recoveries are for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, in case you missed in which forum section you are.
Long answer: No matter if it is ClockworkMod Recovery, TWRP, PhilZ Touch or whatever else, you need a version of the recovery that is tailored to the device onto which you want to install it. Reason being that each and every device uses a totally different NAND partitioning as well as a totally different boot-loading process, hence why the recovery needs to be made to match the device in question. That being said: You can always look at the official websites of the recoveries to try and see if they offer one for your device - or - if there's a forum for your device around here on XDA you best look there to obtain required intel (availability of a custom recovery and releated installation procedure) - or - if there's no forum (i.e. no interest from developers or too "exotic" or too locked down to get a custom recovery going) you can always browse through the "General" forums where some developer may post the one or another recovery or custom ROM for some device where there's no forum assigned to it.

"BEX errors" as in "I start the application. it crashes and Windows shows me a window about some 'BEX Problem Event'" or as in "ODIN actually starts but as soon as I click something it crashes and shows me something about a 'BEX Problem Event'"?
This is not ODIN causing the problem (most likely), this is Windows having a problem - and the bad news is that BEX errors are insanely hard to track down (Google for "Windows BEX error" and be amazed by the sheer amount hits and things (ranges from games to professional program suites). While ODIN shouldn't really require any "external dependency" chances are you could miss some DLL file ODIN tries to load (i.e. some DLL out of the Microsoft VisualC++ 20xx runtime) or you have some offending DLL/Driver installed on your system that causes the crash and so on. There are almost inifinite possibilities why it happens.
EDIT: It could actually be helpful if you would include the information the "application crash" shows you instead of going "gives me BEX errors" ... good problem solving starts by the one wanting to have a problem resolved giving as much information, related to the problem, as somehow possible and not just giving three words to describe the thing that happens. /EDIT
In general: In the past I used ODIN (to stick to the "Galaxy Tab 2" at hand: with this I always successfully used ODIN 3.07 once downloaded from "SamMobile" along with the "Samsung USB Driver 1.5.23.0" driver package - "SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_v1.5.23.0-retail.exe") on Windows 7 and/or Windows 8.1, both x64 Editions, without any problems - so it should actually work given your Windows installation is well.
Unless someone already had that problem and found a fix I'd say your best bet would be to take your question/problem to a forum where it's all about Windows and not about Android or ODIN as the problem is with Windows - and post back a "how to fix" in case you manage to get it resolved.
Sorry for the bad news, but "BEX" problem events are a pain in the rear to track-down and resolve.

I am stuck in a strange problem. I have LG P500 which i have rooted with superoneclick and it is rooted now. I have 2.3.3 V20d (India) which i upgraded a year back.
Now the problem is that according to everyone mine is a new baseband but when i use Rom Manger to install custom recovery it shows my phone but in brackets it says 'old BB'..There were just two options, one was my phone and the other to click the box down if my device is not shown in the above list. I am stuck as can't find any solution and i am a newbie.I did ask some senior members and contributors/devs and waiting for the help,so i thought i will post it here also in case someone has faced this problem before.
Screen capture attached as well.....Just do not know where to go from here. Thanks a lot
MORE INFO: I just downloaded XDA ASSISTANT app to check and in software section it mentions about baseband also. The reading is: V07u-000-000 (MAR-23-2009). Can't say if it is of any help

Are you sure it doesn't matter? But why would Rom Manager mention that? That means it is misleading the user and the user can think esp a newbie that his is a old baseband therefore he will not go with the new baseband and land in trouble.

My advice: don't use Rom Manager to install a custom recovery (or even a Rom); there have been many reports of people bricking their devices that way. A safer way of installing a recovery would be to use LGMDP or adb/fastboot -- instructions should be in a sticky somewhere; I can't search for it at the moment since I'm on mobile. Anyway, good luck.
Edit: Corrected typo -- it's LGMDP.

Well, I know that I spent a few days reading the sticky threads before I rooted my phone, but even then I managed to softbrick it for a couple of days (though it was sort of my fault, since I was using Linux at the time and all the instructions were for Windows, so I had to improvise). You shouldn't need to read every thread, though -- just the stickies should do.
Anyway, regarding Rom Manager, there's a warning in this thread (post #2) not to use it to install a recovery since the CWM version isn't compatible with our devices. As for a recovery you should use, I strongly recommend AmonRa 3.0.6 for a stable and bugfree recovery.
Edit: Just FYI, I installed my recovery using ADB and fastboot. It was quick and easy, the hardest part was installing the LG drivers and ADB (via installing the Android SDK).

No, don't use ROM Manager. 3 years ago when @grigtm used it, it was fine. These days, however, the CWM version in ROM Manager is incompatible with our device. You will risk bricking your phone if you use ROM Manager. Personally, I advise against it.
As for the Android Flash Recovery program that was linked earlier, I haven't used it personally, but it seems easy enough to use. Just
1. Download Android Flash Recovery
2. Install the LG drivers (it's packaged with the program in a subfolder called "USB")
3. Enable USB debugging on your phone (Settings > Applications > Development > check USB debugging)
4. Start your phone in Fastboot Mode.
5. Connect your phone to the PC.
6. Start Android Flash Recovery and follow the instructions.
Confused

This is the first step after rooting.Ok
Fastboot mode is Home + Power i just have to do that? Like in rom manager we could do backup of stock can we do all that also with this?
Actually i read at two places how to go step by step, when to backup, going into recovery and wiping & reset the phone then again into recovery and navigate to the zip file of the rom and extract. But i do not know if it is same with Android flash recovery.
New Words For Me...........OMG why i came here hehehe

There is absolutely no need to learn all of the language, especially when you're just starting out. It's enough in the beginning to just follow instructions, and only go into the details of the Android environment later as you gain more experience. No one becomes an expert overnight, after all.
As for the terms I used... FYI simply means "for your information", nothing to do with Android at all. ADB is the Android Debug Bridge, and like the name implies, it's like the "bridge" that connects your PC to your phone. Any desktop-based program or tweaking tool that communicates with your phone most likely uses ADB (such as SuperOneClick, which you used previously). Fastboot is one of the debugging modes available on the P500. There's no need to concern yourself with exactly what it does (and explaining it in detail is beyond the scope of this post); you simply need to know how to enter that mode when the instructions call for it. Basically, what I'm saying is that you don't need to understand things in detail, you just need to follow instructions. All the instructions you need are in the stickies; for now, ignore anything else that's not there (it'll only confuse you).
The LG Mobile United driver should work. If it doesn't simply install the other drivers.
Thanks alot for the concern

I really appreciate your concern for the safety of my phone. Thanks a lot.
Actually i was to read and follow the instruction as you told but since yesterday i was having headache coz of this and it was severe this morning and still can't open one eye heheehe Anyway i went with the Rom Manager coz of this even though it showed my phone as old BB.It was flashed in less than a minute. Then i switchd off the phone to enter into recovery by holding down Home Button + Volume Down + Power Button(button to switch off) but phone just reboots normally,no recovery set up. The thread i am following for instructions at XDA's How to's says i should not boot into recovery from thr rom manager and use only the buttons combination. But it is not happening, can you help in this?

is it possible to reroot my phone from this procedure.
Well even if you've lost root on your current ROM, that doesn't matter as long as you have a custom recovery like CWM. If you know how then just flash that ROM, but being as you have no device specific forum you should post your question in the thread you linked me.
If you didn't understand any of that, then follow this guide HERE. Good luck.
the one you link to me is for CM Flame 2.0, my unit is Blaze 2.0, is that the same ?
im sorry for being noob but i dont know have any familiarity on the term ur giving me . you mean if i have my CWM on my Recovery mode .. i can just click that and then *bang* im rooted again with my system being reset ?
Thanks for your time and effort on helping me ! i'll expect a reply. TY

The zip is just a generic superSU update zip. It sounds like you have a recovery in which to flash the superSU zip anyway, so yes you may just be able to follow that guide. It won't break anything if it doesn't work though. If you need any further help then you should post in the Android Q&A section. Good luck

I can't give you technical help (read the 2 stickies), although I'll answer you once and say yes it helps: I highly recommend you read up on stuff abour custom recoveries, kernels, etc. To gain better understanding. I've given you a guide to follow HERE and directed you to the correct place to post further questions HERE. If you are still in doubt despite reading carefully through the first link then you should post in the second link where there are many more helpful members who may even have experience with your exact device.
Good day,
I have a tf101 with stock rom (4.0.3)... I recently purchased a Nexus 9, so I figured it was time to start playing with my tf101. Would someone have a link that shows a step by step *How to* to update from stock 4.0.3 to stable KatKiss 4.4.4. I've never done any of this so I need some guidance, if a Youtube video exist that show what to do from start to end I would appreciate the link, otherwise a detailed how to with all related pages would be great.
Thank you in advance for your help,
Albatorak
Use EasyFlasher to install custom recovery and root your tablet. Follow the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688012
Make sure to install the correct drivers before you begin. Choose TWRP. The version bundled with EasyFlasher is probably outdated, so flash the one from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2434422
You're good to go after that. Download latest Kitkat or Lollipop Katkiss by timduru, or try OmniROM by sidneyk. Here are the links:

Install APX drivers from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514942
Then download EasyFlasher to your PC and run it. Prompts will guide you on how to put your device into APX mode. Make sure you have TF101, because this method won't work on TF101g or SL101.

I have one more question just to be on the safe side
When I have installed this easyFlasher and put my device (definitely TF101, thanks for pointing out!!!) int APX mode I can root from where? Let's assume I am in this TWRP and want to continue with KATKISS Lollipop, do I need to root first? or ROM (meaning the KATKISS lollipop?) and then SuperSU
is SuperSU from Timduru going to be enough to root in the order shown by him?
Thank you in advance for any help!!
Yes, I am VERY green but I am trying my best to do everything properly and enjoy the speed and functionality

After flashing the recovery, boot into it (power+vol.down until a screen shows to choose vol.up for recovery.)
If everything went right, you should be greeted by twrp.
Now go to the KatKiss - Lollipop thread, download the ROM and Gapps. Get the latest supersu.
Read installation instructions carefully.
Short version:
Put all three .zip on sdcard. Boot twrp.
Wipe dalvik, cache and system . FORMAT data (important if upgrading to lollipop. A wipe won't do).
install katkiss then gapps and last install supersu. Now reboot.
The supersu.zip is always the last to flash, because it installs the su binary and the helper-app into the presently installed ROM.

This is indeed correct in most cases, but Tim explicitly states that supersu should be flashed before Gapps on Katkiss Lollipop:

EasyFlasher will both let you put your device into APX mode and flash recovery/acquire root, but you don't really need root for flashing recovery or ROMs.

Yeah, I trust timduru, he is an excellent developer. Although I think he is trying to make a point here, so he can give reliable support. In the KitKat thread there where a lot of stupid "doesn't work" posts, just because people forgot to install gapps. From a technical point of view it doesn't matter which comes first, as long as it is done. Quiet frankly, if the gapps would change something that superu did, that would be really strange.
Thank you all!! So, today is THE Day when I shall try... and how do you add LIKE in tapatalk? i can't see this option. I sooooo wanted to like all your helpful hints and instructions!!!

Thank you i never stop learning
I started with easy flasher but it only flashes TWRP2.2 something, so a very early version ;( and TIMDURU advises to use much higher version like 2.8 something for his Lollipop
How do I put this one on my Asus?
Thank you in advance!!!
I decided to give it a try, put the 2.8 sth version in the internal memory, went to TWRP, pressed install, found this 2.8 sth and slid for flashing... now I am going to check the version... if it worked (fingers crossed) I shall continue with the rest
the task went smoothly, I started working on KatKiss,
I am sooooo shocked how powerful this thing is now!!! THANK YOU ALL!!!

I just tested it on my wingray and all looks good.
Wingray is already online. The other will follow in the next hours.
This will probably be the last version for omni-4.4.4 as the new development focus will be on getting lollipop running.

Long time Lurker, new to rooting my Xoom
Greetings and Merry Christmas, I am hoping for some assistance here to see if I am capable of doing this for my daughter. I have a Xoom here wife running 4.1.2. I want to give it to her as she is mad her brother got a nice new tablet and not her from Santa. I have been reading hundreds of pages trying to figure out how to get kit kat on here. I know i need to partition first, and the steps laid out on Omni's thread seem straight forward. The problem i am having is basically starting off.
I have a straight stock, unrooted Xoom wifi model. I understand everyone is busy so i apologize in advance, but dang a step by step from stock to kit kat would really help. I see a lot of threads saying what I need, however I have been unable to find anything going from a stock unrooted xoom. If anyone could give me a here dummy do this that would be great. Do I need to root first before i start the partition?
step 1) do this
step 2 do this
step 3 big part
step 4 omni instructions on kit kat
cannot unzip bigpart reflash
I've been trying for 2 days now to partion my zoom to load 4.4 on it. i have the twrp recovery on and every single time when I try to flas the twrp bigpart, i get a failed error no MD5 file found skipping md5 check error flashing zip. is the download link bad? is there a new or updated bigpart flash?
No sound / Auto rotate after 4.4.4 update
I just completed the stingray-4.4.4-cdma update on my Xoom. There is a bit of lag but most importantly I have no sound and the auto-rotate function no longer works. Any thoughts? (It is 4G capable but I am using WiFi only, not that it matters)
Thanks
Thanks for the info it helped me out
Touch Recovery Question...
I'd like to install OmniROM 4.4.4 on my XOOM (wingray). I understand the volume buttons used to navigate the Recovery menus, but the volume down button doesn't work on this tablet. Can I install a "touch" Recovery that completely circumvents the need for the volume buttons to navigate? The instructions at the beginning of this thread require "TWRP 2.6.3.0 R.A.H BigPart Edition Recovery" yet I cannot identify if this recovery is "touch".
Assistance, please?

The last update to OmniRom or CyanogenMod was November 30, 2014. I.m pretty sure that EOS is in the same boat.
I'm pretty sure that Schischu and the others are working on a Lollipop Rom based on a Tegra 2 Rom for Samsung Tab 3.
I can tell you this, when they release the new Rom it will be a good, stable Rom. Just be patient.
Though Lollipop appears to be nice, there are plenty of reasons why it's wise to wait. Many devices haven't got it yet, and there were a fair number of serious bugs in it.
In the magnums Android 4.4.4 works very well, with very few hiccups along the way I might add.
Bringing life back to my old Xoom. Now its actually usable again.
How can i get the navbar and statusbar allways on?
Hey guys, I have been trying to get this to work all day. I installed TWRP BigPart and am able to successful boot into it. Once in there I
1. Flash the BigPart TWRP from SD Card
2. Without rebooting go to "wipe" and select everything but SD. Then i get an error saying FAILED because it is unable to /mount data, cache and all the other ones selected.
I just can't seem to figure out what step i'm missing or doing wrong. Has anyone encountered this and figured it out?
If i just go ahead and flash, it gets stuck on the boot animation.

TWRP 2.6.3.0
I tried downloading TWRP that is shown on the first post, but when i click the file name it sends me to the page to download R.A.H._TWRPv2.6.3_BigPart_selinux.zip (6.51 MB). Is there anywhere else i can get the file from?

Oh yes it a 100% has to be rooted!!!! If you still want to make the jump follow the guides in the Xoom forum's..... But make sure you always have at least more than 50% of battery power (100 or just under is recommend though) & do not skip any steps or your Xoom tablet will or could become a door stop! The process is safe but I would say this as some advice, read then read again & before you root or flash your rom (READ AGAIN TO BE SAFE). But after you get going your be fine, there's plenty of very experienced Devs in this forum who know there stuff. Good luck mate & hopefully you will be joining us in the world of Rooted devices in XDA very soon

Yeah, I didn't cover that in my explanation, sorry. After flashing the new bootloader, DO NOT try to boot a ROM that the bootloader is not designed to handle. Since this is a Lollipop bootloader, Marshmellow shouldn't work and you shouldn't try to boot it.
The steps needed to install the ROM would be the following:
Wipe everything
Flash the bootloader
Install the new (pwn) ROM
So, if you want to go back to Marshmallow at any time, make sure that you have the latest bootloader which can be found in the latest build of the stock ROM for the Hammerhead going to the link in my previous reply and simply repeat the steps above.
Hope that helped you.

No problem, glad I helped!
Well, only looking at the dates, I can see that the experimental product line is 5 days newer than the archive one. As for the specific differences, I really don't know since I've never used or followed this ROMs developement. If you are curious, you can always have a look at their Github repo and see what changes they made in that period.
As for finding the bootloader, I had a very short bootloader hunt myself the other day and found the easiest way to find the needed build is to use Google. In your specific case, just type in the search bar something like "nexus 5 HHZ12hr", and the first thing that pops out is the build number that I gave you.

Stable image release
There should be no need to find a difference between the stable and unstable image. The stable would be released as an update, so it depends on what you'd prefer to do. Have the latest AOPP OS at the cost of needing to flash it on a Debian based Linux environment, or stick with a different ordeal and just flash using adb and TWRP but need to update your phone right away
The stable image is available here:
