I am looking to pick up a phone to use as a wifi only device / MP3 player for my son. I looked at iPod touch options, but the price / lack of external storage sucks. Having a phone and using it as a wifi only device will also allow him to download free games, watch YouTube videos etc. So, I am looking at a bunch of pre-paid phones, but since I plan to root and install as basic a ROM as possible have run into a bit of a wall about which to choose (it seems like some devices are fairly locked down/not rootable). Hoping to get some recommendations based on the following:
1 - Cost $100 or less.
2 - Must be able to be rootable / custom ROM's available. I want to debloat it as much as possible, so at least having root available.
3 - Must have Micro SD card slot.
That's about it, pretty simple requirements. I am hoping to get something ordered in the next day or two, thanks for reading / recommendations.

Hello, all!
I've been an iPod Touch + Nokia flip-phone user for many years, and just last week I finally purchased an unlocked Motorola Moto G LTE (XT1045) to replace them both. So, since I'm new to the Android world, I have come to ask this question:
How long would you recommend I wait before rooting my device? There are some features that would REALLY like (moving entire apps to SD card (I was a bit dismayed to find that when moving all my apps to the SD card, it only saved a very, very small amount of storage space), as well as being able to prioritize memory usage for apps, Titanium backup, underclocking while phone is locked, etc.). I'm viewing this phone more like a very mobile computer than I did my iPod Touch I always carried, and as such I am expecting more of it.
The reason I ask is I am wondering how long it will take for good support to start showing up for custom ROMs and stuff. Since this is my first time rooting a device, I would like there to be a decent amount of documentation, and would also like the majority of the bugs worked out of anything involving rooting for this specific phone.
On a side note, does anyone know of a way to unlock the bootloader without going through Motorola's site? I've read that by going through there to get the unlock code, you are basically registering your phone as "not under warranty." So, if something that is clearly a manufacturing defect (like charging connector becoming loose or something like that) shows up in a month, I'd like to be able to un-root it to send it in.
Thanks in advance!

BUMP.
I got to thinking about it, and since I am actually going to be outside of the country for the next 10 months, so my warranty is pretty much useless anyway. Shipping it back would require removing the battery, which in turn would void the warranty.
So, at this point my only question is how long would you recommend to wait to root my phone in order for there to be good documentation, and good support for custom ROMs and stuff?
Thanks!

I've been using freedompop for a few years. I mainly just use wifi and get by OK with the free 500MB or data, however, as time has gone on their support has declined. I've had a few HTC phones and currently have a Galaxy S3. This phone has worked very well, but, I think I have a usb port problem and rather than repair it I'm thinking of replacing it with some newer (used or refurbished) model. I've noticed that lately it is using up a lot of my data from background system apps. I've found how to restrict background data, but, when an app updates, I lose this setting and don't always catch it. I'm also using AICP as the ROM and maybe there is something in it that is causing this as well.
In any event it is an older model phone and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on any good cheap phones to look for to replace it.
I do like the ability to change the battery. I can carry around a spare battery and have a spare battery and charger in the car as well. I also like the ability to charge wirelessly and use bluetooth a good deal.
I've heard there is a new fast charge feature on some newer phones, this might be of interest as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions on phones to look at?
Also, I'm open to another service besides freedompop if there are any others like this. Also, because I'm looking at limited data plans I'd be interested more in how to better restrict or control background data use.
TIA
I'm currently trying to get a rooted phone capable of installing Frida to use for reverse engineering.
I tried to root my spare phone (an SM-G925A) but it has a locked bootloader. So, I'm thinking about buying a phone specifically for this purpose.
Can anyone recommend me a model of phone that meets the following criteria:
Cheap
Low memory is OK (will not need to store any music, pictures, videos)
System-less root is possible (unlocked bootloader)
Supports most proprietary apps (rule of thumb: android 5.0+)
battery doesn't matter
screen doesn't matter
carrier doesn't matter, will only be used on wi-fi
thanks
I used to enjoy an HTC 4G LTE rooted and unlocked, but that needed to be replaced
due to random restarts and display problems. I'm still using it to play a few games
not available to current Android models, while my working device is, in fact,
a Samsung A71 5G. (the old one has been transferred to a newer display,
which allows me to play the games as I chill out in my car before going in to work.)
So my question is this: Is there any way to get past the reduced-bandwidth limit of this device
for tethering without resorting to an expensive root procedure? I was flush a year or two ago when I
took delivery on the phone, but I can't justify the expense now for gaining full root, especially
when my wife and I are making less than we did then.
Is there anything out there for me?
Yeah I do need some help. I'm not planning on changing my phone as I don't picture myself playing catch-up with the phone industry and adding even more devices to the ever-increasing garbage pile, so please don't hint that.
I own a 2017 phone. More specifically a LG K10 (2017 model) :: Youtube, whatsapp, casual gaming, Word editing, that's it. And here comes the issue. It's running Android 7, it's supposed to let me 'allocate' space from my Class-10 UHC-I 128GB Lexar microSD card, so I could have apps being updated and never worry about freeing up some space. Unfortunately that isn't the case. And now play store keeps complaining about space.
Well since I'm not "upgrading" to a new device, I've studied my options. And it comes down to just one option: changing the EMCP/eMMC chip. This is the one my phone works with: https://www.cpuprocessorchip.com/sa...10013m-b419-32-16-emcp-d3-lpddr3-1866mhz.html
And this is the one I'm planning to swap that out with: https://www.cpuprocessorchip.com/sa...r3-1866mhz-emcp-emmc-memory-chip-storage.html
So both are LPDDR3-1866Mhz and based on BGA221
I do have experience with micro-soldering (performed a few switch and switch lite jobs here and there) but I'm assuming a phone doesn't have a bios chip, meaning its bootloader must reside on the very chip I want to replace. Assuming the replacement is possible and it goes well, what else do I need to do in order to have this chip running Android on it? Would I need to flash it? If so, prior to the soldering part, what device do you recommend to flash it with?
Thanks in advance.
