[APP][Android 7.0+][4.0.912 - 13/06/2023] AdGuard - No Root Ad Blocker - Android Apps and Games

Introduction
Hello all!
I'd like to present you Adguard for Android. It is a tool designed to make web surfing of Android users more comfortable and safe.
Adguard is an adblocker, privacy protection tool, and protector against online threats. It also has its own Firewall to control the incoming/outgoing traffic.
What's important: no ROOT required.
If you have any ideas on how to improve Adguard or you would like to submit a bug, please do so at our profile on GitHub! If you have any questions about Adguard or related matters and would like to get live responses, welcome to our public Telegram channel!
Important note: we use Github as an open bug and release tracker, but the app itself is a closed source.
Here is our privacy policy. TL;DR: we don't collect your data and send the necessary minimum for checking the license status (in case if you want to use "premium" features).

Privacy protection: spyware filter is on duty.
Firewall can manage apps access to the Internet, which of them can go online is up to you.
App traffic monitoring system shows how many resources each app consumes at the moment.
The app speeds up the load of web pages and saves bandwidth. The pages are ad-free and opened faster.

Instruction on how to install Adguard can be found in our knowledgebase.
Adguard checks for updates once in 24 hours. If there is a new version available, you will get a notification.
If you tap on "Update" we will download and upgrade your version of Adguard.
Google Play:
You can't get Adguard from Google Play because Google wants to know everything about you and also it does not want users to decide if they want to see its ads or not.

FAQ
Q: How does Adguard protection work?
A: Adguard filters your browsers traffic by blocking requests to phishing and malicious websites and removing intrusive browser advertising. Adguard can use three modes of traffic filtering:
1. Local VPN mode - If you are using this mode, Adguard does not need ROOT privileges to carry out filtering. At the same time, VPN-server is located on your device, so that there is no need to pass your traffic through a remote server in order to filter it.
2. Automatic proxy mode - In this mode Adguard launch a local HTTP proxy server on your device. This mode is recommended if you use a rooted device. In automatic mode, enabling of filtering does not require any action from you. Filtering will work in both mobile and Wi-Fi networks.
3. Manual proxy mode - This approach may not work in some situations. It depends on your firmware and the actual VPN app. For some cases traffic bypasses manually configured proxy. In manual mode filtering will only work in Wi-Fi networks. And you have to manually configure the use of proxy server for each Wi-Fi network.
Q: Do I need the ROOT access?
A: Unlike most of applications that are engaged in the traffic filtering, Adguard does not require ROOT access to your device. In local VPN server mode Adguard will filter all your traffic and so the ROOT access is not needed at all.
Q: How to use a third-party VPN along with Adguard?
A: If you are already using a VPN for other purposes, then in order for Adguard filtering to work, you can turn it to a Automatic proxy mode. The filtering mode can be changed in the Filtering settings.
Q: How to configure Manual proxy mode?
A: If your device does not support automatic proxy configuration, then you can configure proxy server manually, using the instructions below:
1. In the Adguard Filtering settings select — Manual proxy mode.
2. Go to your phone settings and choose Wi-Fi. A list of wireless networks will be opened.
3. If the device is not yet connected, connect to the Wi-Fi networks than you need. Open network setting by pressing the line with this network. The following menu of the selected Wi-Fi network will appear.
4. Select Modify network. In the new window select Show advanced options.
5. In Proxy select Manual.
6. Enter 127.0.0.1 in Proxy hostname and enter the port that is showed in proxy settings in Adguard application itself (port 8080 is used in Adguard setting by default).
7. Proxy server is set up. Now all Wi-Fi traffic will be filtered by Adguard.
Q: How does DNS-filtering work?
Adguard can filter domain resolution requests to the Domain Name System servers, handle them locally, and block requests to phishing, malicious, advertising and tracking systems on such domains.
Blocking is implemented by sending back a specially crafted response that redirects all traffic to local network interface (with 127.0.0.1 IP address). Then browser or app intended to connect to such domain will try to connect to a server on this particular device, and eventually get an error.
Detailed answer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63751226&postcount=375
Q: This seems like a best way to filter ads, why use something else?
A: Because there are many advertising systems that use the same domains for advertising and some useful service. The DNS-filtering can be used just to speed up overall filtering process and to save some battery juice.
Q: Why can't I use DNS-filtering with Local HTTP proxy mode?
A: Because we need to filter all traffic (all network packets) sent from your device for DNS-filtering. Only VPN mode can accomplish such a thing.
Q: Why does Android stats show that Adguard consumed more traffic than it saved?
A: On Android's Data usage page or in your favorite data-traffic tracking app, you might see an indication that Adguard has consumed all or most of your mobile traffic. Make no mistake - it's your apps and not Adguard that consumed the data in question. There is a known issue with Android when VPN or proxy is established, with all traffic from all apps being assigned to Adguard. We hope that this clarifies what's happening.
Q: Why does Adguard consume so much battery juice?
A: First of all, no it's not Adguard that takes so much traffic and device battery (as it may seem). It is an issue of Android that calculates the amount of consumed traffic in a very peculiar way. We have a nice article - "Adguard for Android battery and traffic consumption issues", check it out for more information.
Q: What restrictions does VPN mode have?
A: Adguard filters traffic using local VPN-server by default. In this mode there are some restrictions. In local VPN mode Adguard won't be run automatically after turning on the phone, because this capability is blocked by Android OS.

Be aware that while using AdGuard on PC it became abundantly clear that it slowed internet traffic, pages do NOT open faster, but most alarming of all was its insane (and i mean INSANE) overinflation of the number ads etc that it blocked. It smelt like a con on just the bs figures alone, but with the added slowdown in traffic i removed it.
AdAway, via FDroid. Less drama, real results.

More information if some non-rooted users would like to try:
• Android 4.0.3+
• Not compatible with Opera Mini and Puffin Browser.

So you are making a conclusion about android app because of your experience with PC version, am I right?
Also what about PC version, could you please send me in PM some details on this insane overinflation?
Looks like a bug for me. Also traffic slowdown is something unusual for Adguard.

Seems too good to be true & so many complaints on desktop browsers . Lets try this on my MOTO G & see the results .

Unfortunately the setting to change the icon doesn't work.

Hi Everyone,
Sorry but I had to remove all the talk about the paid version of this app because these discussions can easily be against the xda rules. So please, can we limit the discussion to the free version of this app and if you have an interest in, or a comment about, the paid version please take it up on the adguard website.
Thanks!

It won't work if you use VPN filtering mode with Android 4.X.
The problem is that the "key" icon is not ours - it is Android's system icon, we can't control it.
Maybe we should disable this setting in this case?

I would simply add a note to the Icon setting description that the Adguard icon defaults to Android's VPN key in VPN-mode.
No need to remove or disable anything. Choice is good.

Choice is good indeed but we just don't want to confuse user with a setting which does nothing currently.
I think that we may mark setting as disabled and add a note below that VPN key icon is managed by OS, not app.

now the real question, why this over adaway?

Adaway is not a filtering app or an ad blocker. It is no more than a hosts file manager. So for me it's strange to compare Adguard or ABP with Adaway or Adfree. You can use hosts file to block some ad networks, that's true. But the quality of such filtering is very low comparing to what real filters do.
Some examples for better understanding.
With hosts file:
You cannot block facebook or twitter buttons without blocking facebook and twitter sites.
You cannot handle mobile redirects, inline scripts, self-hosted banners, etc.
You will see broken elements (images, objects, whitespaces) on the pages because hosts file does not filter the page code and cannot make it look right.
Filtering has its own drawbacks. Because app actually does something it needs your CPU and it uses your battery.
Anyway, you can use Adguard along with adaway or adfree, no conflicts and no overhead here (hosts file does not use your battery at all).

New beta version is ready.
We are very close to major release. I think that this beta version is faster and better than current stable release.
Changelog for 1.1.779:
+ Tested and optimized for Android 5.0
* Optimized CPU and battery usage
* Fixed display of some elements of the interface and notifications
* Fixed processing of certain HTTPS requests
* Resolved compatibility issues with some apps

I there, I have a question. I tested another application like this one time ago (AdB...k), that worked fine blocking ads but consumed a lot of my mobile data, almost all my mobile data available in 3 days. My question is, this app with do the same?

Yes we will. But actually it's not our app who use this mobile data.
It's your apps that consumes the data.
The problem is that all traffic goes through the filter (our app or abp or whatever) and that's why Android counts this traffic as ours in it's data usage stats.
We plan to add a simple firewall in version 1.2. So you'll be able to see actual data usage of your apps and to manage their network access.

I don't think that was my case, because I keep track of my mobile data usage and I have never used that amount of data in just 3 days (like 65 MB) and I didn't do anything estrange or out of normal, just WhatsApp and I opened Facebook like 4 times.

I am not abp specialist so just don't know, maybe their app really has some bugs. I know they check filter updates sometimes (and filters are rather heavy), maybe that's it. Anyway, if mobile data usage is important to you just enable "Update over Wi-Fi only" in Adguard to be sure.

Do you have a proxy set for your browser? Or it could also be a DNS issue. Try visiting this page on your android browser and see if it will load: http://74.125.224.48/ <- google.com
Cleaned out everything under my APN settings, now it works on both my Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus. But when switching between wifi and mobile data, you have to manually disconnect and reconnect. Can this be fixed?

I guess that could be done Thanks for the feedback.
Seems to use a lot of battery? Over the last session it have consumed the same as AndroidOS.
Just as with manually switching wifi, it seems not to reconnect when it says it does. Can that be fixed? If you lose signal for mobile data and regain it u have to manually restart.
i cant connect

I believe that is normal since it would be running all the time unless you disconnect it. You might want to read this since openvpn and our app functions almost the same.

We are still working on that. But right now it will actually try to reconnect if it detects that no data is being transferred within 60 seconds.
Love this app
I have a suggestion though. You shove give users an option to check if the the vpn is working. Maybe launch a web page or something to test

[APP][2.2+] Privacy Protector for non-rooted devices (New update!)

What can it do?
============
Are you concerned with certain apps required permissions? Then this app is for you!
Base on your settings, this app will automatically turn OFF location and network connections when it detects that certain apps are running, thus leaving the apps no chance of leaking your data. After the apps finish running, pull down notification bar and you'll easily turn network and location services back on.
It works on both non-rooted and rooted devices.
Alternatively, this app can be used as an ad-blocker or data saver.
Performance Impact
===============
With over 300 apps monitored, on average the app utilizes less than 4% of CPU on a Nexus One.
There is no noticeable impact on battery life.
Required Permissions
===============
Access to GPS and coarse location are for probing the location service settings.
Create bluetooth connections and bluetooth administration are for probing Bluetooth status and controlling bluetooth adapter.
Change Wi-Fi state is for controlling Wifi adapter.

Looks useful! Even though I'm rooted, I'm hesitant to install apps that require root because of the obvious security issues. So non-root security apps are important.
I have a question though, will it block access for apps that run in the background, such as code run via Broadcast Receivers? If not, perhaps it could warn the user in such a case, because a malicious program could easily gather or transmit data in the background.

The app only monitors the current foreground process (the one that is dominating screen).
I'd suggest that, if an app runs a background service and raises a privacy concern, it is better disabled by other ways (uninstall, etc.)
There are two reasons why background services shall not be affected by the app:
- Background services may run a long time, thus disabling network or location services could cause much inconvenience.
- To disable location services, Privacy Protector will forward user to Location Settings page. Currently, if user decides not to take action to the settings and do not run the app, s/he can go back to home screen by clicking home button. However if Privacy Protector keeps forwarding user to Location Settings because a background service is running, it may be very inconvenient and could possibly annoy the user.
Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.
I guess many users aren't even aware that apps can run hidden in the background, let alone know how to detect background services. So I'm thinking about a warning to the user along the lines of "hey, you're blocking your 'Unhappy Avians' app, but Privacy Protector detected that app may run in the background, outside of our protection. If you're concerned, you may want to uninstall Unhappy Avians".

The app only uses features of Android API, it does not rely on iptables.
It has been tested on my Nexus One with Android 2.2 and 2.3 roms, I wasn't able to test it on 2.1 rom because I had difficulty to find one.
I've attached an APK which should be compatible with Android 1.6, but I'm unable to test it. Please give it a try.

Has anyone tested this on Galaxy S2 please?
Thank you

The top device which contributes to the 1200+ downloads is Galaxy S2. There has been 4 crash reports in total (the app occasionally crashes after loading apps.. I'm still investigating) but none of them came from S2.
Major update pushed to Android Market
Changelog
- App names are sorted
- Some performance improvements
- UI usability improvements
A minor update
- Option to hide notification when service is running
- User interface tweaks
- Removed all log messages
wifi access
Would it be possible to distinguish between data and wifi (like Droidwall)?
The phone it's installed on, has a bad chip and shouldn't be rooted, but I'd like some apps to only have access to wifi, and other apps have access to both data and wifi.
Does not work on Nexus 4 with Jelly Bean
I ticked the LOC box next to Facebook app, saved, enabled... then opened Facebook app and posted a status. My location was right there in the status post

Blokada settings

Hi
I've come from a rooted phone where I had a hosts file to block ads, but now on P30 with no root I'm struggling to find a good alternative. I have found blokada works but sometimes the system kills it, or it eats a lot of battery.
Can anyone recommend any settings or alternatives for adblocking?
Ps. This phone is otherwise perfect!
Bump! I also need to know a way to make this work!
I'm using AdGuard for 2 years now and it works perfect. SInce v3 was released it is I guess the best adblocker not requiring root. You might need to make a few settings, but nothing hard. Also, if you don't want to pay for it, you can use BlockThis.
Thanks, I've installed block this and it doesn't appear to get killed by battery management and it also isn't using any battery. Guess the trade off is there is very limited customisation available.
Also for those interested, blokada downloads block lists and filters traffic accordingly on your device, BlockThis directs all traffic to their DNS and so in a way filtering happens server side. Maybe that's why it is more battery efficient.

I just changed from Block-this to Blokada on my P10 on Pie and there's hardly any difference in battery drain. Set your dns in Blokada to Keweon instead of the default settings. Keweon is also an ad blocking dns.

Best Adblocking solutions for rooted phone, no VPN?

I know the title is rather generic and not strictly related to OP7, but I didn't know where else to post, and as this applies to my OP7, I thought to post here.
OP7
OOS 10.0.7
Rooted, Magisk+TWRP
So far I have been using Blokada to stop ads and it's been a bliss, but the limitation of Android to only run one VPN at a time makes using another VPN a compromise.
Recently I decided to use NordVPN, but as the situation stays now, I must choose between really no ads (Blokada), or NordVPN, but rely on Nord's as filtering which isn't really doing much.
Can you recommend me some reliable Adblocking solutions for rooted phone that can work in parallel with NordVPN and do equally good job as Blokada is doing? I need to block apps across the whole system (apps, websites).
P.S. using YouTube Vanced, so that one is sorted.
Energized magisk module, energized.pro for info on which version best suits you
Adguard dns without any app
Isn't DNS ad-blocking problematic? I've been reading that apps and websites can detect ad- locking DNS and act strangely.
Also, some ISP may not like some DNS... What has been your experience with DNS Adblocking so far?
Hi
I'm using OP7T OOS Beta 7 at the moment. I've been using Blokada for a short time and liked it a lot. But a minor was indeed not being able to combine it with a VPN from another provider. So I tried Blokada VPN. I had the feeling that it was working smoother than the VPN I'm always using. And I like the way they handle accounts. So you could use Blokada and VPN together if you pay for the VPN from Blokada.
So what stopped me using it? Having a long time subscription at NordVPN. I'm not using a vpn much lately. My setup is as follows:
- setup private dns under settings-networks-private dns: dns.adguard.com
- setup Adaway from FDroid (you need root)
- setup NordVPN. Beware to use the apk from the website and not from the Play Store. Only the apk from the website has working cybersec functionality. It can be used together with Adaway.
I've no problems using a dns server that blocks ads and malware. Neither do I have problems using hosts file based blocking like Adaway. Besides that I'm using browsers like Privacy Browser, Firefox nightly, Bromite and ungoogled chromium. And I try not to use apps with ads.

Thanks, I made the same setup... Seems less strict compared to Blokada, but this I am sure is just a matter of hosts list in adaway.
Do you recommend any hosts in particular besides the ones already in Adaway?
Also, what kind of apps do you split tunnel in NordVPN? Or no need? Everything working as it should?

Be sure to update hosts file in Adaway regularly. I haven't changed any sources in Adaway. Just the standard setup. It blocks system wide and I don't want it to be too strict. Maybe I want to reach a domain sometimes on some site without hassle. You can start up "dns log"in Adaway and then just use your phone like you always do. It then monitors every request. After a while you can go back to Adaway to view which requests occurred. From there you can block domains that were allowed. Or allow domains that were blocked.
I'm not using vpn a lot lately as I'm in my home country. I use it especially when I'm abroad in less privacy conscious countries. That's why I haven't split anything. But I would just it more, I would split apps like Signal private messenger which are end to end encrypted, and apps that don't seem to work well going through the vpn tunnel.
If you are really concerned about your privacy/ISP, then you should setup VPN always on, or force apps to use vpn tunnel by using a firewall. Although opinions differ on this. To me that's overkill anyway. Do you have apps still showing ads? Or do you mean ads while browsing websites?

Yes, some apps are still showing placeholders. Didn't check all apps...but with Blokada I didn't even have the placeholders. Isn't a big nuisance, but if I can find a solution for it, for the better.
As for vpn usage... i just made some network speed tests... what do you see... it was better over the vpn. For some reason my isp was throttling my mobile (weird). So, I decided to allow NordVPN to always connect to the fastest server.
About tunneling, I was interested if any app misbehaves when on vpn (for example Netflix, or banking apps, if you personally encountered some issue).

I keep apps with ads at a minimum, so probably that's why I haven't any problems like that. I remember having problems setting up Payconiq and Transferwise while on vpn. After finishing the setup, only Transferwise still gives problems while on vpn. I don't have streaming or social apps besides Telegram and Keybase.
That said, if I didn't have a subscription from NordVPN, I would use Blokada and pay for its vpn. Everything in one app. But in case speed is important, probably Nord is a better option.

You may have the same problems you have with VPN apps, I have not had any problems for the moment and I have been using dns adguard for some time ... once there was a problem in the server and they crashed but just set '' automatic dns' 'until the problem is solved. In any case, if you don't have root the only way is vpn or dns
I tried the Magisk module Energized but couldn't make it work. I got an error that it was not compatible although I had systemless hosts installed. Otherwise it seemed promising.
I'm testing another app now: Nebulo. At first sight I like it very much. But don't download it from Google Play cause that's a very limited version. Downloading it from Aurora Droid seems the easiest way. It's like Blokada, but I like it more. You can add packages to block ads. And the choice is large. You have a lot of dns servers to choose from. You can test the speed of the servers. Not just a ping test, but a revolution test. You can use cache to avoid sending the same dns requests over and over to the server; to speed up browsing. And a lot of other settings. Worth taking a look at.
Tried Magisk module energized.pro module on another ROM with success now. Using private DNS settings in android combined with that module. My favorite setup at the moment.

Help security/privacy question GrapheneOS (noob, beginner)

Hello everybody, i am using Graphene OS and only FOSS apps and i have a question. Recently i see some Foss apps also have "trackers" like Duckduckgo browser for example. I want to choose which apps i can block the internet connection for + the communication wich each other + VPN. I tried to use a "firewall" like netguard to block internet connection from the apps whoem don't need it + trackercontrol to block the trackers from all the apps and OpenVPN to hide my IP adress. But i can't use these 3 apps at once because the phone recognize them all as an VPN. Does anyone have the solution for this for me?
Use Brave browser.

That is only for tracking on web browsing. I am searching to block unwanted trackers on the background from the apps also
When you are on the Internet, data such as IIP address, browser type, operating system, etc.pp, are inevitably transported with. Even a VPN service - what is superior to a Proxy - get this data transmitted. And you never will really know what the VPN service is doing with these data - at least VPN services that are free-of-charge - and whether they themselves run Man in the Middle Attacks or not.
BTW: A Firewall protects a network’s resources from intrusion by users on another network such as the Internet. All networked and online Android users should implement a Firewall solution, IMO. If you have a rooted Android smartphone, you can use AFWall+ to control your device’s Internet activities. AFWall+ also allows users to control Internet access on a per-app basis.

Thabk you very much for youre great advice. So if i understand it good it is VPN connection is not a top priority right? Is it also true that GrapheneOs creates every day another imei number? Is the firewall solution of AFWall+ not the same as Netguard? If no can you please tell me what the difference is. AFWall+ gives in Fdroid that it has antifunctions, also for a lot of other apps. Does that have also influence on privacy and security?
I don't
1. make use of VPNs
2. know anything about GraphenOS. Changing IMEI and/or Wi-Fi Mac Address on a per daily basis makes no sense for me
3. use NetGuard, never tried it
