I believe you can upgrade to a 5 or 10 gig at an extra cost. Curious as to how you burned 2 gigs in one day though.

Chances are you have unlimited. But it doesn't matter as soon as you hit your cap you will be throttled. I'm allotted 5gb a month and if I use it all before my next billing cycle I have the same problem as you. My suggestion to you would to use wifi if available or change your data plan.

Sorry but if that was possible we would all tell T-Mobile to suck it and get free data.

I remember people cheating this on AT&T and they were busted cuz' AT&T found out. My humble suggestion is stay with the 2gb plan and try to get internet for your house. I also use my phone as main internet but I keep it cool. I have only managed to get to 4.3gb in a month using the tv shows apk. Never been able to use more than 5gb.
I know, it s**ks to be throttled. I have 2 friends that always get throttled and they want to die. LOL
hello, this not the case with me. I'm in bay area if that's matter, and im not being throttled now for 4 months in a raw.But i am with one of those grandfathered plans 20 unlimited.I have it with the blackberry 8120 witch bought 2007 it was edge.So right now im doing about 20 gb per month on average , but still not tethering .Im starting to tether tough due to very high prices on Comcast and the speed is comparable with t mobile. But i will try not not being throthled again becouse of a tethering - there is way to hide you from the pc.
Is there any way for me to disguise my usage so they can not see that I'm tethering or am I busted and should give up?
Thanks!

Hard to do! The data usage patterns of a mobile device n that of a computer vary a lot. The bandwidth used within a period of time is a sure shot indicator of the same. Best would be to get a home internet.
It seems like they are wising up --- or determined some new way of detecting it. Give us more information.
I also tether a lot and now im concerned! I was just discussing this on the Captivate forum. Another user recently got caught: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269283

I am not sure if they do it off data usage or mac address. I know when I stream Siruis radio that is uses the same data that my laptop does. I have hit 5mb of usage in a month with I play about 6-7 hours of Siruis each day at work.

8GB this WEEK???? Give up and pay for tethering. There's no way you're going to be able to play that off as phone usage.

AT&T has the ability to do deep packet inspection to determine what OS is sending the packets - there are some fingerprints they can use to tell that it isn't an Android device.
This is a resource-intensive process so they normally don't do it.
But if you use 8GB in a WEEK, you can be sure they're going to investigate if that usage actually came from just the phone.

Maybe. I haven't gotten a nastygram yet and I tether my tablet all the time, but that's it.
I'm responsible about data usage though - even with moderate tethering I've never gone more than 500-700 MB per month.
I haven't gotten anything yet either (knock on wood) but I did get one of those "you are in the top 5%" emails this month. So I will be watching my usage a lot more considering multiple, members on various forms here are recently reporting this from AT&T.

OMG. 8 gigs in a week. Lulz. How? No torrents on teathering. My 2 cents
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I know this seems like a joke, but really, switch to Sprint. Unlimited means UNLIMITED, on 3G or 4G (although you're much safer tethering on 4G since they don't give a damn how you use it). That, and we have the GSII.
All carriers have a teathering plan in the works, even sprint. Soon teathering will only work with the proper plan. People have taken this for granted and abused the unlimited data which was not designed for 8gb a week usage. I know that is extreme. Think about it. The unlimited was made when the average person had no idea a phone could do it. Hell I ran my whole shop off a teathered connection to my tilt when our internet went down. But that was rare. Now every kid in the world has a phone that can do it, do they use it responsibily? Nope they are streaming movies in class, music.....you get the point lol. I can't blame the carriers. As more and more people live their lives with their faces buried in a phone or tablet, the data network that runs these device will need to be changed from what we are used to. With the new system you will not be able to hide what device is using the connection. So now its time to man/woman up and either get home internet or pay for the teathering.
I got the email ....i dont tether.
I tethered 1 time last week to test functionality on gtgs new thrill rom....
Is there maybe an apn issue where they think i am tethering when i am not????

From the good folk over at TmoNews. I changed over via T-Mobile Chat. If you're paying for a 5 or 10 GB plan, might as well add this option. T-Mobile charges $15 to use mobile hotspots and they don't give you any extra data.
I've use the feature with my tablet and was never charged but just in case...

Hey Moe, Larry and Curly! Did you guys bother to read the story on the other side of the link?

Do you know what a T-Mobile hotspot is?
https://selfcare.hotspot.t-mobile.com/services_about.do
It has nothing to do with tethering your phone or even using your data plan. It's actually the opposite, it allows you to connect to a broadband network called "T-Mobile HotSpot".
Ya but we have tether hotspot on our phones meaning my friends tablet works places I am at cause I enable my phone to be a device to connect to via wifi.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Actually...
1) Yes, you can tether your t-mobile device.
2) Yes, you can do it without paying t-mobile.
HOWEVER
3) If you do it heavily, they will send you a message complaining, and telling you that if you want to continue, you'll need to pay $14.99
I received that message last month... to date they haven't cut off my tethering.. however, technically, they do charge for the service, even though it works without paying.
but...
4) I don't know if they will actually cut anyone off - I wasn't cut off, but YMMV
And, yes, they are now offering a free add-on now that allows you to legitimately tether without paying...
However "to protect revenue stream" they aren't offering it proactively, it's supposed to be offered as a save feature if someone is wanting to cancel.

What your talking about is using sharing your data plan.
"T-Mobile HotSpot" is a service. If you go to a restaurant and scan wireless networks there will be a "T-Mobile HotSpot" and you can connect to it and now you have broadband internet that doesn't count towards your data plan.
I got that bit lol. I guess the difference is more important to some then me.

Quote from their Add. "Smartphone Mobile Hotspot provides the ability to share a Smartphone's 4G connection and is normally a $14.99 value." Which would be Tethering & portable hotspot in the phones settings.
Just got it activated on my existing 5gb plan. Thanks!
I wonder if you can qualify if you have unlimited data, they would probably force me to choose the 5 or 10th and give that up. I already pay the 15$ a month for the hotspot...

All I could see is if you're flashing ROMs on your phone and it suddenly messes up then you can't go online to troubleshoot but if you don't flash on a daily basis then everything should be fine. I personally haven't done tethering on a regular basis (even though my plan allows me to).

FWIW, tethering kills your battery life. You use a fair bit of internet at home, but not really a "power user" per se, so you're kind of in the gray area where this type of thing could work for you but still isn't a great idea IMO.
Sounds like a good idea if it saves cash at the end of the month. At home I easily blow through 200 gigs per month, but if my usage resembled yours, I'd do it.

My savings would only be about $22/month but I'd get faster sppeds. My home connection is 6Mbps my friends are getting 20 to 40Mbps on their LTE phones.
The only thing holding me back is what if my needs change and I need more internet at home? Especially now that winter is arrving a lot more time indoors/at home.

My Verizon wireless plan does not allow unlimited data since I recently upgraded my phone. The unlimited data plan was discontinued after they came up with their new family share all plan. I am an internet junky and love to read about different topics and at times watch videos, and I recently switched from the AOKP ROM and they had a 3G toggle, and, as most of you know, 3G does not kill your data as much 4G. Paranoid Android does not have this toggle and I was wondering if I was the only one who thought that was kind of upsetting. The ROM is pretty amazing though. As far as I've read 4G doesn't use more data than 3G, it just uses it faster because pages and whatnot load faster.
I mean... loading yahoo.com uses the same amount of data whether you're on 3G, 4G or wifi.
Right...?

All 4G does is allow data to transfer faster. Website "A" does not use more data simply because it is being transferred over 4G as opposed to 3G. A 250kb file will be the same across both, you'll just get it much faster on 4G.
