LG Nexus 5 16GB - Still worth it? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys tomorrow I may be getting a new smartphone and I was thinking if the LG Nexus 5 (16GB) is still worth it. The maximum I can afford is 350 euros. I'm not gonna pay more than that. I also have the option to choose between this one and LG G3S 8GB or LG G2 16GB. Which should I get and why? Thank you.

Out of those three get the Nexus, although if you can find one get a 32GB just for peace of mind. As for why, it's a Nexus so it's just better

Thanks! Another question: is it possible to install apps on external SD card? I currently own a chinese brand that let's me move most of the apps to the SD card. Can you do that on the Nexus 5? I'm asking this because I doubt I'll find the 32GB version.

There is no external SD card. You'd have to buy and otg cable ansbuab memory stick. You can then move sdcard data to otg using root apps such as folder mount.

Buy a used from Craigslist if you have one.

Be careful when buying from craigslist IMO. I bought mine from a guy who posted his ad on craigslist.. worked for 2-3 days then it wouldn't work. it turned out the phone was stolen and got blacklisted at least in Canada.

I haven't had trouble on craigslist. If you go that route have the person meet you at your service provider so they can check the imei. Works for me.

Yuup! Totally worth it. I have been using a Nexus 5 16GB for about 4 months now. Although a 32GB version is recommended if u can afford it, since Nexus 5 don't have External Memory!

I'd take a 1+1

If you game a lot on your phone, get the 32GB.
I have the nexus 16GB and a nexus 7 tablet where I do my gaming on.

Huh?

Too bad I couldn't find the 32GB version anywhere. Where I live this phone is sold out. All I could find is the 16GB version on a website. I've already ordered it. I'm gonna be satisfied with it but it's really a pain in the oven the fact that I couldn't find the 32gb version. By the way I'm no expert in rooting/kernels/roms etc but from what I can see this phone has very good support. Thanks guys!!
EDIT: Guys, I just got owned. The same website sells LG G2 32GB at 350 euros. Would you guys cancel the order for this new option?

Too late. But I'm still satisfied. 16GB is gonna be enough for me. I'm not an enthusiastic gamer but I do like to play sometimes. Usually if I get tired of a game I just delete it. I'm not into music so much, so songs don't bother me so much. A couple of apps wouldn't even get closer to 1GB (I'm not talking about gaming apps). I don't know about the typical sizes of kernels/roms but I think 16GB is plenty for my needs. Thanks.

The OS is about 5 GB so you`ll have about 11 GB of user space left.

Well, I'll learn to survive at the limit. In the future (2,5+ years later if it endures all the pain) I'll probably switch to N6 32GB.
The fact that the OS's size is 5GB sounds like a 'tricky scam' from the producers to me. The phone should have about 21GB total memory not 16 then.

I ended up cancelling the order lol. I had ordered an anti-shock protection as well for the N5 but what's interesting is that they'd bring them to me separately (two different transport packages lol - which is more expensive). I sent a message to them saying if they could bring those 2 requests together and they said no, they had to bring them separately. I ended up cancelling both of them.

[Q] How can they sell these this cheap?

On ebay- how is this possible? Are these garbage? http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Micro-SDHC-...gital_Camera_Memory_Cards&hash=item3a5f1832d6
The same thing shopping on google is $100-$120 http://www.google.com/products?q=32...SearchBox&oe=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wf
my experience is that cheap ebay stuff is usually just as good. probably fell off a truck or the seller has some sort of connect. i'd trust it tho
they probably have like 50 of them so the price is not a issue for them Ebay is generally safe got my droid 2 for 50 bucks
Probably counterfeit
You have to be careful with media cards...there's quite a big counterfeiting business in them...from what I've read.

I wouldn't waste my time. These cards are most likely fake. They show up to windows, your phone, or whatever as 32 gb but will really be a lot less. Once at capacity, for example 2gb, extra data becomes corrupted. Having the sandisk logo doesn't mean anything, there is a lot of fakes out there. The general rule is that if somethings too good to be true, it is.

His feed back looks pretty good to me. It's super easy to check for 32 gig's obviously if it isn't there then contact the seller. Worst case you lose $12 for a couple extra gigs. I might buy one

This is very true. The digital camera folks have a lot to say about this. The cards can be formatted way beyond their actual capacity, and then fail dramatically. When they go, they're gone. Here's a couple of articles I found:

I wish you guys the best of luck, but I'd also be real careful about keeping your stuff backed up off-site. I'd sure hate to lose all my nandroids!
Thanks for the feedback guys. I have a $50 gift card to best buy so I'll buy a real one.

[Q] Possibly replacing my Skyrocket, what would a good replacement be?

So, I have had my skyrocket for about a year now and I like it a lot, but there is one thing that is driving me nuts, the darn proximity sensor. The fact that it almost never works is enough for me to get rid of the phone. Since I haven't been able to find a way to fix that issue I am looking at getting a new phone. The Skyrocket was my first smartphone, I bought it used in excellent condition off ebay for $200 and I was using with Net10's BYOP plan. So if I am to replace it I would want something comparable in performance and cyanogenmod support. I am currently looking at an LG Optimus G, because it seems to be the best bang for the buck, being the only smartphone that I could find with a quad core that is less than $300. Specifically I am looking at buying this one.
So, this leaves me with two questions for you guys.
1) Is there anything I can do about the proximity sensor?
2) Is the LG Optimus G a good choice or is there something better in that price range?
As always thank you for any help and/or advice!

I was seriously considering that because of how awesome a deal it was, then I realized that there was no expandable memory. I currently have a 32GB uSD card in my skyrocket that is full with nothing but music. So 16GB wouldn't cut it.
That was a deal breaker for me too, and the non-remoavable battery.

Need? No, but I don't want to be having to change what I have on my phone all the time. If I want to listen to something I just want to be able to hit play. As for Google Play Music, being on Net10 AT&T plan I only have 1.5GB and I have already burned through that in 2 weeks before.

[Q] Possible 64GB storage option?

Currently I own an HTC One with 64GB of storage. Bought it back in April the first day it came to the U.S and its the first android phone I've ever owned. Loving it but, The nexus 5 has been very interesting to me. I like the idea of stock UI, quick updates, near perfect optimization of hardware. The problem is if there isn't a 64GB storage option, selling my One and buying the nexus 5 won't be able to happen. Many people tell me to move my ever expanding library of music (currently 25gb) to the cloud, but with 2gb of data and how often I listen to music using google play music to stream my music just isn't possible. So is there any recent rumors, or possibly any type of speculation someone could make that might point to there being a 64gb version? Trying not to get my hopes up because most likely, the highest possible storage will be 32 like last year but still, a small sliver of hope isn't bad right?
TL;DR Will the nexus 5 possibly have a 64gb storage option?

I think this is very unlikely, as
- the 16GB version is practically confirmed,
- there were always 2 storage options for Nexus devices (+ possibly 3G/LTE tablet variant), and
- the 2nd storage option was always twice as big as the 1st (afaik).

Well the Nexus 4 did ahve a 8gb version as well. Making it 3. Though that was quite some time after the initial release. The 32gb version is practically confirmed as well because of the leaked manual. So either I'm thinking an 8gb version will be coming out or a 64gb version. Most likely the former, rather than the latter though if it follows the nexus 4. :/ Really hoping a miracle happens though and a 64gb version appears.

Ah yes I was considering this, I should probably ask someone with personal experience but how well would that work? Would my music application of choice immediately recognize the music? How much time would it take to recognize the music? If it works well I won't completely rule out the nexus 5. It would definitely mess up my way of syncing. I use bittorent sync to wirelessly sync music from a folder on my PC to a folder on my HTC One. Not being able to do that isnt a deal breaker but I want to make sure that selling my One for a nexus 5 won't be a regret.

On the music issue I understand you dont want to use your data but have you considered streaming your own music on wifi or loading up a playlist the night before and then taking it with you? I do that with Subsonic server (free) and Dsub client, 2$ but worth much more imho. You do have to have your tunes on a computer connected to the net while you stream or load but I love this setup so much i ditched my ipod and doubletwist. I have a days worth of tunes I chose the night before or just a jukebox shuffle of whatever. Takes about 5 mins to load after i have selected whatever i want, goto bed and good to go the next day. You can choose how much you want to cache and Dsub uses only that but you get a fresh supply everyday. Sheesh, i sound like a shill but im not. just really like Subsonic

Yes google play is an option but why up your entire collection then stream when you can just stream it yourself? its redundant i think,
2,306 artists
7,293 albums
85,490 songs
979.08 GB
6,679 hours
not bragging but im not putting all that in the cloud and it sounds like xXxG0dzRAgexXx has a serious collection too so play is not really an efficient option for most ppl. I also think that if ppl knew they could stream themselves easily, Play would BE redundant .
It is nice to have choices tho

What makes you think that? The FCC documents, as well as the leaked service manual have both mentioned 16gb.

In that case, I'll take back my word. That just sucks.
My 3 years old Vibrant have 16gb for godsakes (not to mention the microSD slot).

I don't really see why people need more than 16GB, I have a 32GB sd card in my phone and I haven't put anything on it.
don't see the need for more than 16 GB either...esp with otg cable...
but I would pay extra for a bigger battery if that rumor is true

Nexus 4 didn't have OTG support (without custom kernel and external power, which defeats the purpose). I'm still waiting for confirmation for the Nexus 5. OTG drains alot of battery and not the most convenient either, but it is one of the key feature I'm looking for.
The Nexus 4 launch was a failure because Google didn't expect this much demand from the Nexus 4, but Google has learned their lesson and has told LG to make a lot more Nexus 5s for the launch than last years Nexus 4.

I have a 64 gig sd card with 15 gigs left and 16 internal gigs on phone. Hd videos ,hd games take a lot of space plus if you have a little one you tend to take alot of pictures. 16 internal with no sd slot for most people won't cut it. I could fill that up in a weekend.

It really bothers me when people try to make this argument...it's so self-centered, and besides, it's a fallacy. Your argument is this: Because you won't fill up 16gb of storage, it must be true that no one can have any possible reason to fill up 16gb of storage.
Everyone's usage patterns are different. Here's some logic that's not a fallacy: Because there are many people hoping and asking for a 32gb or 64gb option, it must be true that many people need more than 16gb.
Now, here's the part that really angers me. Why don't they just offer the user a choice? 16gb for $299, 32gb for $349, 64gb for $429. How hard can that really be?

I think the reason is that they don't want you to have that storage, they don't think you need it. With the cloud and all that jazz.

You're right, and that makes me mad too. Do they think we all have unlimited data? I certainly don't. Besides, there are plenty of places I go where I don't have the best signal...I'm not going to be watching movies on my phone in my house, or in the middle of the city! I'm going to do it when I'm on a road trip, or on an airplane, when streaming is not an option. Not to mention storing nandroid backups, where cloud storage is never an option.

That was by far the ****tiest launch of a phone, and lets hope Google makes sure they have enough to go around for a bit longer than 20 mins.

Samsung is really screwing us by taking away external storage, look!

I was at best but checking out the note 5 and I saw this. I'm really not buying this now. They are pretty much forcing you to buy the 64gb version for $80 more dollars. 11gb free GTFO!
how many times are you going to post the same thread? This isnt a true Tmo device as this was from best buy which is said to take up more storage space than one that you would buy from TMO. This thread should be deleted.

Here you go. I've had mine since this morning. Although I purchased the 64GB version, roughly 11GB is being used including bloat ware. You can relax now.
I have the 32 with 113 apps installed and I have 21 gigs left

20gb free after installing 80+ apps and syncing all my email accounts.
I keep seeing your post everywhere, it is sensationalist garbage.

Meh I have a gs6 and don't really miss the storage - i can always use otg to compensate if need be
150 apps, 32GB version......
Pointless thread...
Everyone is going to have to get use to the idea of no SD card... really, unless you save everything, delete nothing, store all your music on your phone, never delete pictures and take 10 minute videos in 4K frequently... 32GB with cloud services is plenty.... I was going to buy the 64GB but really thought about it and glad I did not. Paying for the 64GB is like asking samsung to kick you in the privates and take your money at the same time, 128gb even more so. $200+ premium for memory that only cost maybe $15 to $25 in real life is just dumb... Apple pulls the same crap too... Yes, it takes a little more management of your device but honestly well worth it to save $100 to $200... plus with unlimited high speed data with TMO and the fact that it's my Jump On Demand Device that I will probably get rid of in a few months... just not worth it.
:good:
Would it be a nice bonus if it did, yes... it also be nice if it went to work for me, cooked my dinner and washed my car... however, i live with the fact that it can't do those things for me, so too I live with it not having SD Slot....
21gb free on my 32gb Note 5, with plenty of apps installed.
Just finished setting mine up.

Theres mine with about 120 apps installed. Though I wanted the 64 gig, it wasn't avail in store and after having a 64gig Nexus 6 and not using half of it, I decided to save some money. I have unlimited LTE on TMobile so cloud usage for me is just fine.
Op, you know those phones at stores have a crap load of demo software on them, right?

I do now thanks for everyone who posted. Even though most have a lot of apps installed, it's the videos and photos that will eat up the memory.

No, you are wrong. You don't have to get USE to it. Stand up tell Samsung to **** off by not upgrading to this POS and email them about it.

Then dont buy it. i for one am happy with my Note 5, thank you samsung especially for the 4gb of memory now!!
Now that I got the crick out of my neck from that sideways picture, you also need to note (pun totally intended) that there has been ~5GB of files added to the phone. I had 51GB free on my 64GB Note 5, and still have 20-some after copying my music over.
