Galaxy Tab Plus vs Nexus 7

I know there are many things about the Tab Plus that make it a superior piece of hardware, but the Nexus 7 is one of the few 7" devices that even comes close to it in specs and performance.
The one great thing is that it will get the latest OS updates and that will make it a more fun device to use. It hasn't even shipped yet, but has its own forum and someone has already figured out how to root the device . . . The most frustrating thing about Samsung is its silence and sluggishness regarding updating our beloved device. Not to mention the wifi driver issue.
I don't plan on getting rid of my Tab Plus but I have a Nexus 7 on pre order and can't wait to try some Jelly Bean.

Well it has the superior processor and better software support, downside would be the missing microSD slot, limited internal storage and lack of 3g. So on the one hand you are dependent on the cloud but you dont get mobile data capabilities. Sure Tegra 3 is nice but i still think the tab+ is at the very least more mobile.
Oh yeah and the n7 is supposed to have a bit of a better screen.
Since it has only wifi and limited storage it's designed to be used at home mostly which conflicts with the concept of such a small screen size.

OK, so I was really curious about this too. I made a little spreadsheet to compare the GT+wifi to the 16gb N7. It's attached. There's several small differences (dimensions, materials, asthetics, etc.) that were either a matter of taste of too insignificant to call "different." BTW- if I've missed something let me know and I'll update.

Thanks for pulling all this together!

Honestly if the nexus 7 had a microsd card slot id probably rid my gt+ but im not sure if im willing to give up storage for a faster cpu. ... I think it kind of is a downgrade, and cloud come on why would you want your files on another device and not your own? I think its a cool device and may work for you but all n all i think the gt+ is for the win in my book

I just sold my Gtab+ on ebay today and pre-ordered two Nexus 7.
I'm just tired of Samsung taking forever to roll out major updates, namely ICS. I've had working ICS leaks on my E4GT for several months now, which I am enjoying and all, however my P6210 has seen no such love. Its not mobile/3g so the carrier argument is null. What bothers me further is that Samsung put out the tab 2, which is extremely similar yet its got ICS.
I decided to sell it now, while i still can and forego the microSD card slot. apart from that, i am gaining a far superior tab that has much greater function (to me) than the tab plus.
Despite the Lack of external storage I do not see how a Gtab plus is in any way better than the Nexus 7. Even if it has 3G, pages are slow to load and browsers FC more often than i'd like to admit. I find myself (when using my phone) waiting and hopping onto wifi more often than waiting for 3G.
Based on Specs alone, my wants and needs would be satisfied by the Nexus 7. As great as external storage would be for movies during flights and trips, i can still make plenty of use of 16GB of on board storage for my half way around the world flights.

Just some quick thoughts on my future with my GT7+...not commenting on anyone else's decision to switch or not....
Not sure if I'll sell my GT7+ or repurpose it, but I too have ordered an N7. Lack of ICS (my 10 android tab has it so I do know what I'm missing- unfortunately I don't have time these days to root/hack as much as I'd like to get an unofficial ICS on the GT7) is a big issue for me so getting to leapfrog it for JellyB is a dream. Day to day performance compared to iOS has always been so disappointing and it looks like JB will have that smooth, buttery UX that android has been severely lacking. I can't wait! I know many will disagree with that statement, but fanboi-ism aside, you gotta admit, why does android need two or even four cores running at 1.2-1.7Ghz to run as smoothly as iOS (which only uses a dual 1Ghz cpu or slower)? I'm not a dev or coder so don't know the nuts and bolts of the OS, but as a consumer the slow downs, freezes, stutters, etc is a deal killer.
These days an iPad3 is my main tab (/ducks...lol), but I still think the GT7 size is a portable sweet spot. There are times the iPad just feel to big to bring. Plus, the horsepower of Tegra 3 with that monster GPU (12 cores!) will make the N7 a serious competitor to the iPad for games and multimedia content creation (photo and video in my case)- if we get the proper apps. Another thing the the N7 got me with is a better supported screen rez- I've had app compatibility issues possibly because 1024x768 wasn't properly supported for a honeycomb tablet.
16GB with no expansion might be tough, but support for USB drives will come soon if not available at launch. No HDMI out is also a bummer, though again, I've read MHL support could be added with a firmware update.
Lack of 3G is a non-issue. 3G sucks. Sorry, but come on, in this age of LTE, good WiFi coverage about anywhere and LTE MiFi's, I would never pay extra to have 3G in a device these days. LTE data plans are about the same cost as 3G now and coverage is only getting better (obviously, I'm only talking about the US and have no idea what the situation for LTE is in other parts of the world)
Anyway, I know I'll always have uses for both OS's- well, my work requires I know and use both, but it's gonna be great to have a device that won't sometimes make me feel like a beta tester when I use Android.

Oh yeah an that with 3g is your opinion, but it highly depends on where you live. When youre on the countryside 3g is your only option, since there is bad lte coverage and wifi only at home so...

If you can't find google or the search button, how did you make it to XDA?

GTab+: MicroSD, HDMI (with dongle), rear camera + LED, haptic feedback.
N7: Better resolution, OS, CPU, easier to hold (grippy case), NFC
I'll be keeping my GTab+ P6210 for now. Besides being a bit slower and lower res, it suits my purposes fine and has all the extras. Hopefully the OS will catch up eventually (at least 4.04 with good custom ROM, don't care for TW that much). Might get an N7 later but not in a huge rush right now.

but want to order the 32 Gig Nexus 7 (they are currently sold out)to have a cream of the crop OS to play with . The only reason I need the Xtra space is for movies so I'll just bring my GPlus when on long trips and the Nexus 7 for short ones. :good:

Well i wont leave my GT+ for sure.. I use it for cellular purpose and also browsing internet.. its my main gadget now ^^, but eyah, another 7" tab for 200 $ with 1.3 quad tegra.. jelly bean.. quite a good offer for self amusement.. will consider getting that N7 as well.. but GT+ will always be my main, for now..

Free navigation? You can install Google Maps on P6210 for free too.

I want to buy an android phone and its not my first one i had SXP neo L before along time ago
Im a student and the best devices that i can afford are SXP Z2 , Galaxy S5 , LG G3 32GB , Galaxy Note 3 N9005 (snapdargon version) , Zenfone 2 (4gb ram 2.3 ghz version)
these devices are all great pros and cons problems they all have one but i want a device with a fair developement status and i want to keep it for 2 years i want a device which will work properly for 2 years until i upgrade
(before you answer you have to know i play games alot i want to watch movies i scan documents with my phone so camera is important)
can someone explain to me briefly which device is more future proof ? (is 64bit hardware important in my case ? is more than 2gb ram necessary for me?)
which device i can sell with higher price between these (after 2 years) ?
if your overall choice is S5 which version ? Exynos Octa or Snapdragon ?

Save up your money and get the note 4. You won't be disappointed. The gear vr is the coolest gaming I've ever done. The S5 is a good choice as well.

As an S5 owner who's extensively used the G3 and Note 3, I recommend either the G3 or Note 3. The G3, in the shortest amount of words possible in my opinion, is an S5 with a better Android skin.
I think, for someone who wants to use their phone for videos and other multimedia applications, the Note 3 is definitely your best option due to the screen size, which also
allows for more processing and battery power.
That said, if you're interested in being able to mod your phone in a fashion that doesn't make you bend over backwards in order to do it, stay away from the Samsungs.
With regards to "futureproofing," if you really want a phone that will hold its value over time, buy an iPhone. All of these flagships will likely be supported by their mfgs for a couple years after their release. Each will get at least Android M, albeit up to 6-7 months after its release (LG is usually better about quick updates than Samsung). I have no experience with the Zenfone, unfortunately.

According to your choices I would suggest you to go for G3 . I have my hands on G3, S5, Note 3 and I like G3 because of its performance and camera clarity, Note 3 is also good. But my overall experience was good with G3.

Done a ton of research to pick the next phone. Still cannot decide. Help!

First of all welcome everyone, glad to be a part of this forum. I've been lurking XDA developers since long, long time ago back in the PDA era (HTC SPV M5000 anyone?).
I've owned my Galaxy Note 2 for over 2.5 years now and I'm tired of constantly running out of internal storage and the now-supar camera. I'm looking to buy a new smartphone that will check off many boxes, but if I could describe what I need in 2 sentences, it would go something like: a large-screened productivity workhorse with loads of storage and battery, and a good camera. And if it's future-proof, that's even better! I want a device that will last me for at least 2+ years.
Here's what I'm looking for:
- Screen size between 5,5" and 6"
- Internal storage min. 32 GB, needs to have a microSD card slot (unless it has 128G internal storage)
- Decent camera with OIS (camera should handle low-light shooting well)
- Decent UI (unlike the majority of community here, I don't really want to be flashing my phone with new ROMs or any of that, I just want something that works well right out of the box and is user-customizeable through custom home launchers etc)
- Great battery life (this is big for me, I'm often on the road, I listen to tons of podcasts, use mobile data, bluetooth, sometimes wifi tethering etc. I need a phone that can get me through a looong day)
- Fingerprint scanner
- Won't put a huge hole in my wallet (I wouldn't mind paying more for the perfect and FUTURE-PROOF phone but seems like there isn't one that checks off all the boxes. At the same time I'm trying to keep it below $500)
- A physical home button is a plus (and capacitive buttons! Just like in Samsung Galaxy series)
- Screen res. above 1080p is a plus (better for VR and I will probably try some VR in near future)
- Replaceable battery is a plus (plus extended phone cases, yay!)
- OTG support is a plus
- USB-C is a plus
- Dual SIM is definitely a plus
- No curved screens like on the Samsung Edge series
I looked at:
- Huawei Mate 8 - checks off most boxes, nice big battery but crappy, buggy, and not very customizable UI.
- Huawei Mate P9 Plus - very interesting camera-wise, the rest just like above
- LG G5 - also very interesting camera-wise, a bit smaller screen, and a battery that's way too small. Although replacable, I cannot imagine remembering to bring a spare battery with me everywhere.
- Nexus 6P - great reviews and everything, great software BUT I'm mostly based in China where ALL Google services are blocked, so it would probably be a big pain to have to rely on VPN the whole time. Also camera has no OIS, although I did read it's great. Another con: a bit expensive and not easily available in the 128G version
- Samsung Galaxy A9 Pro - the top contender for me so far. The 5000mAh battery is nuts and just what I need. Dual SIM and dedicated microSD slot. Affordable. But the big bummer: sub-par camera. Also a bit low on the DPI if I ever want to use VR. And no notification light (how am I supposed to know if I got notifications?)
- Samsung Galaxy Note 4 - a bit slower than the A9 Pro, smaller battery, but better camera. And the stylus - I could definitely use the stylus for more productivity. Just really not sure about investing in the aging technology. I want to get at least 2 years out of the new smartphone. Also I've read there's some issues with GPS that are hard to solve. Added benefit of possibility of extended battery case.
- Samsung Galaxy Note 5 - nice and seems like a significant upgrade from Note 4 but no card slot, and expensive at 128G. Still only microUSB v2.0 even at the high price point.
- LG V10 and LG G4 - very interesting propositions, reportedly good cameras, very mediocre batteries (and not too good power management it seems) at 3000mAh but both could be extended with a bigger battery. Pretty sure I would be fine with a little bulkier phone with a case that accommodates a 4000-6000mAh battery, but I would still need to keep it as slim as possible, I don't mind if it's not the slimmest phone but I certainly don't want a thick and heavy brick in my pocket. I've also read reviews of some of the extended battery cases and it seems like the battery quality can be a real lottery. The batteries lose their capacity quickly, and I think none of them can be charged using the Quick Charge 2.0
- ZTE Avon 7 - veeery interesting proposition, not the biggest battery but almost everything else knocks me out of my socks. 6GB RAM possible, 128G storage that can be expanded by another 128G (!), capacitive buttons in the higher version, an added benefit of insane speakers. The camera is reportedly not too impressive though, although I'm pretty sure it's better than the one in Galaxy A9 Pro. The main concerns: it's a very fresh phone, the UI is reportedly not very optimized, I can imagine there will be plenty of issues that ZTE will need to fix through software before this phone runs as smoothly as the Galaxy A9 Pro or LG G4 would. And I hate waiting in hopes. Also, being in China, I think it's a bit tricky to purchase the phone in International/European version that has a broader range of bands and doesn't block Google services. I've read through the entire 35 page thread on XDA about this phone and yes, it seems like you can get the Google services to work without problems but who knows what the next ZTE updates will do to that. The way I generally see it is Chinese UI = potential problems.
For the Galaxy A9 Pro or LG G4 I would just go to Hong Kong to buy them and enjoy a phone that doesn't have the Google services blocked. I couldn't find the ZTE Avon 7 anywhere in HK on the internet.
All in all if I had to go to the store tomorrow I'd probably need to choose between a Galaxy A9 Pro, the well-proven LG G4 with a great camera (but a need to buy a good extended battery case and ultimately ending up with a rather bulky phone), the Galaxy Note 4, and the ZTE Avon 7.
Any suggestions, thoughts, recommendations?

The Asus ZenPad 3S 10 (Z500M) thread

Decided to start this thread on advice from another forum poster in an attempt to drum up some interest with the hope of building a community of support since there aren't a lot of resources online about it. It's a good, fairly recently released android tablet with decent specs. I bought it last week and so far I am not disappointed though there are definitely a few niggles about it, as is the case with just about any device.
(pros) Things I love about this tablet:
-hexacore processor... it feels nice and snappy.
-big bright 9.7" ips screen
-build quality feels solid and seems very much on a par with Apple's iPads
-reasonably priced, especially when compared to the comparable Samsung tablets
-4GB RAM & 64GB internal storage (YEAH!)
-MicroSD storage (no singing the Nexus tablet blues anymore with devices that don't have MicroSD support)
(cons) Things I hate about this tablet:
-no root ability so no flashing of custom roms (so far)
-only android 6.0
-PowerVR GPU failed to blow me away for gaming but is still no slouch... just no Nvidia K1 killer
-hardware compacitive buttons instead of softkeys (which may be a plus or a minus but I feel it's a minus because of difficulties seeing the buttons when not lit in the dark)
-battery is not the best but not the worst either. Buy a $20 powerbank if you go on long plane trips
-too many pre-loaded Asus apps (bloatware) though I'm beginning to discover that they can be disabled
Anyway, I'd like to build up a community of support for this device and share tips & tricks for its userbase. The most important thing I'd like to see is a way for it to be rooted so that we can have some real fun with it. Plus, it should bust open the interest in this tablet tenfold if it occurs. It deserves its place among other classic more budget-conscious android tablets like the Nexus 7 2013, I feel..

The chipset is so new on this tablet that I can't get a fastboot command that shows the state of the bootloader to work.
Although Asus usually has locked bootloaders, Mediatek chipset are usually not locked in my experience. My Lenovo tab 2 10A has a Mediatek chipset that was not locked.
I am sure the chipset on this tablet is locked, but not positive. With a locked bootloader we can't do much with this tablet.
In the past I have owned the Asus TF 700 and the Asus TF 701 if memory serves Asus provided a bootloader unlock key (app) to unlock the bootloaders on these tablets on the Asus support pages.
On Asus products I currently have:
ASUS ZENPAD S 8.0 Z580CA
ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 (Z500M)
I have asked Asus support for a key for the S 8.0 and never received a reply. The S 8.0 has a Intel processor and the 3S 10 has a Mediatek processor. I really like Asus products but latley they are very restrictive on options.

Seems like there are a lot of here that migrated from the N7-2013 to the Zenpad. I had been trying to hold off for the long rumored Samsung S3 but gave up and got the Asus as a Christmas gift. Like most of you all too, it would be really nice to see an update either by Asus or custom ROM. But I think the mediatek processor is the biggest limiting factor at this point.

I do not think Mediatek is such a negative thing. If you take a close look most of the large manufacturers of Android devices are using or have used Mediatek chipsets in some of those products. The ageing chipsets are almost non-existent in today's devices. The king of the hill on mobile chipsets is Qualcomm Snapdragon. The more Mediatek is used the more consumers will look for third party development. Imo

I'd like to christen this topic with its first question to owners of this device (or any android 6.0+ device for that matter) that are into portable gaming with their phones and tablets.
I just bought a SanDisk Ultra 128 GB MicroSD card which will be delivered tomorrow according to USPS tracking. Since I have a rather large GooglePlay base of purchased android games and apps, would it be best to use MicroSD card external storage or adoptive storage for them? Thanks.

I'm with you on terms of performance with the MediaTek and I do think it's likely to start seeing more widespread use. The weakness I was referring to is that at the moment it's not getting much love from the Custom ROM Developers

True XDA seems to have little love for Mediatek.
Fasle on getting widespread use. The use of Mediatek is worldwide in phones and tablets and coming on strong.

Problem: I just inserted the SanDisk Ultra 128GB MicroSD card into my Zenpad 3S 10 and though the card is recognized and I'm able to format it as external storage, I'm not getting the option to format it as adoptable storage. What could be the issue? Is this something that one of the Asus bloatware apps is causing? The android version is 6.0 so I know it's adoptable storage capable.

I prefer have the external sd card listed as external storage, but to see more options you may want to go to the website and download the manual for this device if you haven't already.

I was able to enable adoptable storage under the ZenUI launcher by using this tutorial, but the transfer rates are ridiculously slow with the SanDisk Ultra 128GB. When I formatted it as adoptable storage, I got a warning that my MicroSD card was too slow for adoptable storage and that I would probably have issues. But the Sandisk is rated at 80 MB/s so I'm wondering what's up. When I tried to migrate the data to the MicroSD it said it would take an hour to migrate 37GB of data from my internal storage but it self-aborted after about 20 minutes or 10GBs. WTF? Running SD benchmarks right now to determine exact transfer rates and even that is taking forever in reading operations for the benchmark. According to the other ZenPad topic, this Asus device may have issues with large 128GB cards. I'm starting to become disgruntled because I bought this tablet with the hope of transferring all my apps and games to the Sandisk 128GB card and having it actually be feasible to run stuff off of it.
ETA: Just did a cold reboot and now my SanDisk 128GB MicroSDXC is showing 42 MB/s read speed using the A1 SD Bench app instead of benchmarking at 4.5 MB/sec before the cold reboot. Maybe this will work out after all. Retrying the data migration to adoptable storage now.

Well, my adventures in adoptable storage have not been a total success. I posted about my specific issue with it here. Hopefully other owners of the ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 have found a way to at least make microsd cards formatted as external storage able to run obb files off of it. I'm only realizing now how badly needed that root ability is. Thanks for any help.

I contacted Asus about upcomming updates and got the following responses (roughly translated from german):
Yes, an upgrade to Android 7 is planned for your device (I asked about the LTE version). Unfortunately, it has been delayed, but we expect it to be released at the end of the second quarter

I then asked them about the non-LTE version, specifically because of this post which claims that the Z500 will never receive an update because the hardware is not supported by nougat.
We can't confirm this and cannot make any further comment on this false report. Unfortunately, we have no information on the release of Android 7 for your device.

Note how they could immediately tell me when the update is comming for the LTE version but have no information about the non-LTE version. Perhaps it is not supported by Android 7 after all and they are still figuring out a way around this? I'm not an expert on this topic, someone more skilled than me might want to take a look on the post I linked above, I can provide translation if needed.
Still not sure whether to buy this or the S2. Similair prices, I like the ZenPad more for the hardware, but the S2 is well served with Custom Firmware and is thus sure to be up to date for many years...

About the IMG GX6250 no being able to run Nougat, that's a lie. See here about the new Asus Tablet running Nougat, it uses exactly the same GPU as the Zenpad S3 10.

It make no sense, why would Google support a device in Android 6.0 and stop supporting the same device in Android 7.0 unless it was a old chipset and hardware configuration. If Googe was at odds with Mediatek it would be news...

i have asus zanpad 3s 10 z500m for 3 days and i have a problem. After 3- 6 hours in standby tablet stop responding.i try a factory reset and after the night in standby mode the tablet don't start. i try power buton ,nothing.i plug in charger and after few seconds the tablet start.the battery have 45% so not the issue.

I would send it back for a exchange on a new replacement.

Thinking about getting one of these for my daughter to replace her aging first-generation 10" Samsung tablet. It seems more cost-effective than getting a Samsung Tab S2 (or the new and ludicrously priced Tab S3) for pretty much the same - or better - spec.
I know rooting is pretty much never going to happen (so I'd never consider one of these for myself) but how bad is the Asus bloatware/crap that they've bolted on top of Android? Would a new launcher (such as Nova) fix most of it without needing to root?

The Asus bloatware and launcher really aren't bad at all and actually grown to like it. I'm coming from an N7 2013 and a series of Moto Droid that were as close to stock android as possible.

Bought mine specifically for a decent resolution 4:3 device. Fought a bit with the bloatware to get it disabled to my liking - in particular some of it absolutely trashes the performance (I forget which though, this was months ago).
Coping without root. Only tend to use that for AdAway, so am using JumpGo as a browser - and almost none of the other apps I use are ad supported so it's not too terrible.
Would love to see a proper AOSP build for it. The hardware is brilliant but as it stands it's simply a stop-gap for me until something better with similar properties comes along with decent software.

Will Samsung release a new 8 inch tablet like the Tab E with Note 8 features?

My first tablet that I owned was an Ipad..... Big mistake. I can't stand the Apple dictatorship on apps and control over the device. Then I got a Note Pro 12.1. It was great until the battery kept overheating and samsung would never admit to a faulty battery or anything on that tablet. Then I moved to a Tab E.
The Tab E seems rock solid, no issues, etc. Mine is wifi and 4G. But the screen is crappy (low quality), there is no S Pen.
I feel there is a large market for an 8 inch Android Tablet with the note 8 features..... High def/4k screen, S Pen, etc. But nothing from Samsung. It would also be nice to have 128gb internal storage with the card slot, etc.
Has anyone heard of a tablet refresh from Samsung?
