Hello all,
I have installed lollipop when it came out, I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. Then I reinstalled a bunch of apps I use (games, apps, utilities) - all from scratch to make sure that old setting and such do not interfere.
All seems to be fine (smooth, fast) - only some apps do not seem to work - however, in some cases (when for example opening Chrome) I see huge slowdowns...
Anyone else experienced this? How do I find out what is causing it? How do I fix it?
Thank you for any suggestions
Un-install Facebook. I was about to revert to Kit Kat, but I figured I would wipe and re-install. I noticed slowdown when I installed Facebook, so I nuked it and my tablet is butter smooth now.
The Facebook app destroyed lollipop performance on my Nexus 7 too. This is not a Shield issue, it's a Facebook/lollipop issue.

Wow. I had facebook installed but not even logged into, and i saw dramatic reduction in stutters and pauses when i uninstalled it.. how facebook, how?!
Thank you all. I do not use facebook. Any other possible reasons?
Applications I have installed are foldermount, adaway, titanium backup .... Could those cause this?
I also don't have Facebook installed and get some hang ups, especially when a system animation is about to occur (opening an app, going home, etc).
I'm rooted as well, with foldermount, adaway, ultimate backup (jrummys titanium), and a slew of other games and stuff. I didn't really think it would be an app issue. But maybe. I'll get rid of a few apps I have on my phone and see if I notice a difference.

Thank you. I tried that - and it makes no difference. And the problem is not just with Chrome, as I experience (more or less random) slowdowns elsewhere too. I am a bit disappointed with this whole new Lollipop experience. On one hand it is (much) smoother than Kitkat was, on the other hand I get slowdowns, incompatibilities etc. which I never experienced with Kitkat
Well I have LTE version, i am rooted with philz recovery locked bootloader and orginal kernel, i use Seeder (find it on playstore) and weekly clear cache and dalvic/art cache, have no lags and slowdowns on lollipop, if there are, they are so rare that i dont notice any more.
Did you factory rest after the update? Cause i read somewhere that already installed apps have issues with lollipop so fresh install is recommended, i also have no issues with facebook either...
And also did you try changing processor mode to max performance in Shield power control under battery menu from optimized.
I must also mention the battery times have improved alot compared to kitkat...

Thank you - I will try your suggestion (I did a factory reset).
For now I have another (larger) problem to solve - apps moved to the SD card disappear...

Thanks, I'll have to try with a re-format.
Tablet is stock, not rooted and boorloader locked. I sideloaded the lollipop OTA on my LTE version and i experience the same issue.
It flies most of the time but sometime, especially when downloading or updating apps from Play store or opening random apps like Skype or even hangouts the tablet will come to a crawl.
I think this is a lollipop issue which nvidia need to address with an update.
I have to say on 4.x the tablet was unbearably slow at times and it didnt seem to be related to any specific app. After installing lollipop fresh and clean everything is really smooth, except Chrome. When i open Chrome and start navigating i see things slow down to being unresponsive for 30-60 seconds at a time and immediately working if i close Chrome. I also have a Nexus 5 with Lollipop and no such issues there. I did install facebook so ill try removing that. Ill give the optimization thread a peak too and see if that works.
Im impressed overall with the Shield tablet, but its a blemish that general web browsing is faster on CM11 on my Kindle Fire HD (original). Maybe Nvidia will come out with a fix, or someone here will pin point the exact cause.

For me, web browsing in general has been a pain, many browsers don't seem to work well on our hardware. They all feel somewhat sluggish. And flash has been very picky for me... I think it is finally dying, haha.
Get rid of Facebook if you have it and try this for chrome

Lastpass?
Do you happen to use LastPass? I found that, upon a fresh install, everything worked great until I installed LastPass. The way that they set up autofill in lollipop seems to hang up the whole system. When I disabled "Enable fill service" in the settings, the tablet was blazing fast again.
After playing with it, I found that I still got decent performance while still being able to leverage the best part of the app by enabling the fill service and disabling the helper and scanning for password fields.
A little app called cache cleaner can do wonders? and a simple reboot also helps a lot.
Btw. im using Yandex Browser for now untill BoatHD gets the lollipop update and it works really well on the Shield with 5.0

Hi
I can't post in real thread so it is here , I'm on big part from beginning (Everest XOOM) and at first everything works great but in last two weeks problem start both on Chrome and Chrome Beta.
I try dalvik wipe , cash wipe, try to use ART , try to reinstall both applications , to remove flash player and finally switch from OMNI to CM11 but there is still same problem
so if anybody have any suggestion it would be great
Many thanks in advance
I install ElementalX-Xoom-2.1 ( full version not vanilla ) and enable zrom and it is better I can work little longer on Chrome but eventually problem occurs again ...

I also had serious problems with Chrome constantly freezing and crashing on my Xoom wifi upgraded to Kitkat Omnirom 4.4.2. I've installed version 33 as advised in another thread (a developer one that doesn't allow me to post there), using an apk file linked on that thread.
I haven't tested this yet but, assuming it works ok, how do I stop it from updating automatically? Any idea on how we'll know when an update appears that is safe to install, and will work?
Chrome Beta
I had the same problem too. Chrome on Omni and TeamEOS kept freezing. Only to kill the running app was helpful till it freezes again.
Then I've installed Chrome Beta (v37.0.2062.55) and since then everything seems ok. Until now no more freezes.
Maybe anybody else to prove that?
Simple fact of the matter is, KK is just slow on the Xoom. I'm amazed that we even saw 4.4, seeing as how mine (wingray) is over 4 years old.
I ran CM11 there for a while, but the constant freezing of Chrome and the slow clunkiness of the interface was enough to drive me back to CM10.1
Hello all,
I recently bought the shield tablet but am having some problems with it. There appears to be an unusual amount of lag in things such as ui and games in the tablet. I had no possible reason for this to occur. Even while typing this message, the tablet is missing inputs on the touchscreen keyboard. I am running this rooted and stock. I am using folder mount to move all my obbs to the SD card (Samsung 64gb pro, 90Mb/80Mb). I used SD maid pro to disable the autostart on all the downloaded apps such as Gameloft games. I am using the default screen color correction and am using optimized power mode, but have not set the apps to be optimized.
From what I can see I have done everything I can to optimize the tablet, but all is in vain because things still seem to lag. Any help?
I have run into it a few times as well. Rebooting the device helps, also switching over to ART helped as well. At least as a temp fix.

I have heard the opposite actually. Many people said that dalvik was better. It seems as though it might be related to the folder mount since I have about 40gb worth of games. I went over the top.
I agree keep dalvic! Art seems to have a few issues, this will be sorted when the shield gets updated to 5.0
I too have some serious lag going on and I don't understand what is causing it. It really sucks. After a fresh reboot all is fine until an hour in. I'm not sure if it's the sd card causing it or not. I wish there were more replies here regarding it. We can't be the minority here with these problems.
I just bought this tablet and was having the same issues. I did a factory reset and switched to ART. Thing flies likes it's supposed to finally.

Use Greenify to manage background applications to better optimize performance. Sounds like this could be an issue with stock ROM. It may be that trying a custom AOSP ROM like Vanir might be of great benefit, though it was just released recently and could have issues. It's worth trying if all else fails.
Oh yeah if it's an SD card issue, it might be resolved by installing the "KitKat SD Card Full Access" XPOSED module. KitKat's changes involving the SD Card may be interfering with Foldermount, so this would fix it in that case.
I'm really hating the lag on this device. After a few swypes in Nova Launcher, the lag starts. This is a stupidly powerful device. Why is this happening!! Tried formatting, and unrooting.
Think it is a known bug, according to NVIDIA forums, supposedly fix in next update.
Try changing I/O schedular
And
Govner to Interactive.
Haven't got this tablet, just giving my 2 cents lol

Actually you can change governor, but it's already set to Interactive.
The values are fairly well tweaked too.
You can't change I/O scheduler though.

Use Dalvik
I switched over to ART immediately when i got the tablet, because my moto x runs faster on ART, but it lagged A LOT randomly, so i switched back to Dalvik and have noticed virtually no lag since then. Hopefully they can fix this in future updates...
The default camera creates corrupt jpgs and the sd card gets stuck in a loop. You have to delete those jpgs and all is well.
So I got my Nvidia Shield a while back. The first thing I did when getting it was installing all the updates. Eventually after the final update was installed, I did a full factory reset of the device.
I have hardly any apps installed besides the essential Google applications, but my Nvidia Shield still feels remarkably slow. Chrome is practically unusable, and switching between apps is not a pleasant experience at all. That said, benchmarks and games perform wonderfully, which has me a bit puzzled. There doesnt seem to be any problems with memory leaks as there is plenty of RAM available. I do tend to restart it quite often just to see if it makes a difference, but I doesnt really feel like it has much of an impact.
Does anyone here have similar issues at all? I have worked with Android quite a bit and never have I experienced a system run Android so much worse than you would expect given the hardware specifications. My Nexus 10 feels a lot more snappy in general use.
Thanks for any help
All I can say is that I have a similar experience to you, although I have quite a lot of applications installed. I don't have any solutions for you, only to wait and hope that nvidia optimises the software for the hardware in the next update (Android 5.1 hopefully)
It's up to you, but I will recommend you to try this:
1) Unlock bootloader and Root (If you haven't).
2) Use CWM in this thread as custom recovery, I know TWRP is fancier but has some issues while flashing and wiping stuff, tending to not cleanly install things.
3) Try @BitOBSessiOn custom CM12 ROM here.
4) As stated there, avoid CM gapps, we don't know why but they are culprit of making the system lag A LOT making it almost unusable as you posted, specially if you frequently use Facebook and Chrome. Instead use the minimal gapps posted there.
5) Really important step: Activate Developer Options and disable all animations, lollipop men leak resides on a function called when the system draws them, so the only temporal fix for this is disabling them, after that, reboot and kill any bloatware app on options > apps (G+, FB, Messenger, Vine, Chrome, etc)
6) Profit
I've had this problem too.
I just turned off battery saver. It got too low, automatically turned on and I didn't realize but when I turned it off, it got way faster.

The Lollipop memleak bug is pretty easy to detect though and that's not what's causing the performance issue on the Shield Tablet. At least not in my case. While I would normally be the first to unlock my bootloader and port CM to my new device, I would want to keep my tablet stock.
Im glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing issues so Im going to assume that there's nothing specifically wrong with my device in particular. I guess Ill give Nvidia one more chance to rectify performance issues with their next update, otherwise I'm selling the tablet and buying a Nexus 9 or something else.
I have the same experience. I have flashed the latest recovery image, unlocked and rooted. I have disabled apps I don't need and does not have a lot of apps installed. It is unbelievable slow. Like stated above Chrome is almost useless and switching apps is painful. I am using my Nexus 10 too, the Shield tablet will collect dust until there is a fix released.
If I have the time I will try flashing CM12 but I rather stay stock.
You should give it a shot...
Chrome lag totally solved. Most Nvidia apps work. Only deal breaker is the controller, but a ps3 controller can be paired via BT using sixaxis app.

This has almost convinced me to switch to cm12.
If it just werent for the loss of Dabbler, some other Nvidia apps and the fact that I have a looooot of apps installed...
Not worried about gamepad, because I use an ipega 9023.
I may have found the holy grail of slow laggy freezy hell! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.memory.manager under tasks go to 3 dot menu at top right choose minfree manager pick the top silder and max it out. Hit apply, let app stay in background and proceed with speedy happy days.
I don't know why but it won't keep the settings after boot no matter what I do but I can live with it now and don't fantasize about smashing it with a rock anymore.
I should mention short of non-stock Nvidia roms I tried EVERYTHING twice! This just works for 3 days now perfectly. I actually might even trust it in a week for actual work applications. My poor old Nexus 7 gen one was totally owning the Shield except for game until now.
I have a LTE USA model running rooted 4.4 Kit Kat. I would guess this will work with 5 as well.
Please remove. (Double post)

That's contradictory. I have a really tiny LMK value for foreground apps (foreground= 8mb, Visible=16, secondary=32, hidden=64, content provider=96, empty=128 ) so apps in the foreground are killed only if system goes under 8mb of free ram, and have no lag, but I'm on CM12.1. So I really don't know how this is working but I'm glad for you. Although it may drain your battery faster BC android is killing apps as soon as they go to the foreground to keep that amount of free ram and is using more CPU cycles to load them back when you need them again, that's what I get. But anyone with more knowledge maybe could guide us why this is working???
Interesting, it's working but I didn't even try any other variables. I will try your settings and get back. Needless to say battery life is next after usability.

Ok tried your suggestion verbatim. It immediately was back in useless mode as I have been calling it. Without a reboot it took me at least 15min to get back to here. Still could not type so minmanged back to previous settings and its running. Weird.
My test would have been run Facebook, chrome & this app with poweramp music. Never got halfway before it got all James May on me. Are we running the same tablet? Any thoughts on why we could have opposed settings and get different successful results.

Also when it slows down it gets warmer the settings I'm using leave it pretty cool in comparison.
I'm on stock 5.0.1, 32gb SD + internal memory almost full. I experience some lag mainly with chrome and switching app. Yestetday I tried to set the power saver to "max performance" and the everything seems much smoother..
Make sure you SD cards are formatted with NTFS. exFAT is fine for 32gb, but if you have a 64GB or higher, the card needs to be formatted in a PC using NTFS...
Don't ever let your main ram storage memory get below 500meg.
If somehow you run out of memory,, let's say sub 10megs then all manner of weird things begin to happen including reboots and app crashing. You can jam that external sd1 card full however.
I reset mine several times and tried everything I saw in these threads about the lagginess and stuff.
In the end, I found the solution. I returned the NST and exchanged it for a new iPad Mini 2 32gb Retina Screen... No really.
I love Android on the phone, but it just seems that the tablet arena isn't anywhere near as far along and sorted out yet. Buggy, almost too many options, so you wonder how much love each model gets from the manufacturer, etc... I hate to have a new tablet for $300, and the only way to get it to run the way it was supposed to run out of the box, is to void the warranty, root and install a custom ROM on it, and give up some features in the process.
I like ROMs for things that they do above and beyond the stock experience. I don't feel that I should pay that much for a device and have a ROM be a requirement just to get it to run decently...
So, for my tablet needs, I had to go to the dark side. Good luck!
I will still rock my Note 4 and don't see myself going to Apple for my phone needs any time soon, but for a general purpose tablet for Netflix, email, browsing and basic games... I agonized for hours over this but in the end I just pulled the trigger and exchanged it.
Hey guys
i need some tips or feedbacks. So ive been with the Galaxy since the S3, and each one ends up becoming the same. They are great when i first get them, then within the first 2 months, they pretty much turn into crap. The UI isnt smooth, things take a while to open, apps dont transition to another smoothly, opening texts,, going back and forth between texts and apps arent the best and i constantly get problems to the point i need to do a warranty exchange with tmobile.
Do you guys experience the same or are you phones super fast and fluid? Even with a rooted phone i experience the same. Whenever i test out my friends iphone, everything seems to be super quick and fluid, just not customizable and limited to what you can do
What can i do to improve my phone or this is just how these galaxies are?
Thanks!
Hiya
I find it's good to reboot every so often, and I also use the built in Smart Manager to Clean All, and I don't experience any lag.
I do run my phone pretty clean though and don't have a million useless Apps which does tend to slow it down.
Reboot and use the smart manager from time to time and you should be good to go. I also find that using Package Disabler, Nova Launcher and Anti virus Apps SLOW DOWN my phone and make it buggy and laggy.
I have now wiped it and left it fully stock and it multi tasks properly and is super quick.

Thanks for your response. i already do all that. I use clean master everyday to clear my phone of cache and boost it so all background running apps are closed. when rooted, i deleted all useless apps and bloatware. i do restart my phone but still, i face these problems. its just frustrating when using an iphone because everything is so fast! i just want to fix up my android to be the same but it always turns to ****. im now facing a problem where outgoing texts stays stuck on sending and doesnt go through so now i have to use a third party messaging app.

Seriously, cleanmaster?? Delete immediately! If you're rooted, why don't you freeze the bloats? Use amplify and greenify combo! Can't believe a rooted user uses cleanmaster
Clearing cache every time is not good and results in stutters as cache is meant to make loading times faster and usually only cleaned if there are signs of corruption!

lol i didnt know about that for cleanmaster, im new to the whole rooting thing so i didnt know. i already freeze the bloats using titanium backup. also, i had to update my phone because my call quality was all messed up. i updated my phone to baseband version DOJC. upon doing that, my phone is no longer rooted. where are the best places to go to download new files in order to root my phone again. i dont want to use my old files and risk messing up my phone.

So if you're no longer rooted, you can't use titanium backup. No need to root the S6 as you won't be able to update and rooting without using custom roms isn't that great.
Use package disabler pro! It's enough. Put apps to always optimize in battery settings. Use a custom launcher like Apex or Nova. Update everything. Clear cache in storage menu and reboot. You should be good.
Try leaving at least 1GB out of your internal memory free, although its impact is not proved!

no, i meant i used titanium backup when i was rooted. im no longer rooted because i had to update my phone in order to fix some problems i was having. When i was rooted, i used a custom rom, twisted sixx version 3. i want to reroot my phone again, but i want to know if i need to download new files again to root if what i used last time is ok. last time i rooted was in septempber so my files are from that time frame. If not ok, where can i go to get the new files i need to root again? also with your phone, is everything usually fast and fluid or do you come across the problems i mention earlier as well?

Sorry can't help with newer root methods!
I'm completely stock and using package disabler pro and app optimizer. It's not buttery smooth like a Nexus or Motorola, but it still is a fast experience, i.e, rarely any scrolling stutters. Try putting animations to 0.5x or 0/off.

ok cool. i just installed it, looks to be the same like the titanium backup where i can disable freeze all the random apps. any idea why my texts are stuck on sending? dont really want to do a system wipe to see if that fixes it
thanks for you help!

Np! Try defrosting some packages that as per your guess might be linked to the sms system.
Try sending through a 3rd party app like Google messaging app on play store and see if it works.

Search 'safe to debloate guides' in S6 general and q&a forums and Note 5 forums as well.

awesome, thank you!

Or he could use Kernel Adiutor and set Androids build in kill scheduler to free ram

My little tips :
First. Speed up your android device by *not* installing any speed booster app.
2. Android is smart enough to force close background services when more ram is needed. And restart them when ram hungry process (e.g heavy game) ends. Do some research, it's a very very bad idea to manually kill background apps and services. Doing so will just decrease both your performance and battery.
3.Stock Samsung provided applications gives better performance and battery life. They also use ram more efficiently. try using stock launcher, stock keyboard, stock E-mail app, etc.
Also every other launcher that uses vertical scrolling will have lags. (Apex,Action,Nova and even Google Now Launcher)
4. Manually clearing cache is also bad idea. Imagine you put your charger on your desk to quickly access it when needed (cache), then someone puts it back to drawer every time :| (Clearing catche)

Thanks for the tips. i already use stock email, stock interenet stock everything. My battery dies extremely quick with minimal use, as oppose to when i had it rooted, which was significantly better. with minimal use today, its been off the charger for 5 hours and im already at 50%. i also dont force close. i just click that menu button and press close all when nothings being used, or are you saying thats not good to do?
i have mine for 10 months, and i don't regret it at all, i had a galaxy S2 and S4 before and i always said i won't get another samsung because of the lag, but this time i made the right choice...the phone flies through everything, loading apps takes no time, opening apps really fast, the truth is this is the first galaxy that didn't lag after a couple of months, at least not for me, there are sometimes some frame drops, but in general it's really fast, i use stock apps, i restart my phone about every week, the battery isn't that good, 3-4 SOT...so not bad but not that good, because this is a phone you wanna keep using all the time and then suddenly the battery die.....the truth is if i had the money now i would get the NOTE5/ S6 EDGE PLUS...because of the battery and big screen, other than that it's perfect....best screen, camera, the new TW is really good....

yeah, but this time it's different, the phone is as fast as it was when i bought it....really fast, my old galaxy devices lagged when opening even the dialer, not to mention the gallery, takes 2 seconds to load...now it's instant....

Are there any ROMs that work well/ respond to touch quickly?
I recently pulled out my old tf201 to try to start using it again. I was able to get the last version of HairyBean working.. But it is really really slow. Like I'll click a button and maybe 30 seconds later it will respond (or tell me the app isn't responding). I mostly use it for my kids to watch shows. Once the show starts it works great, but just navigating the menus and apps to get to the shows can be excruciating. Also, I know thisdevice has WiFi issues just due to the all metal construction, but I feel like the WiFi is even slower than what it used to be when I actually used this 5 years ago or so.
I flashed a couple of other ROMs and either had a lot of bugs, or couldn't get root, or something. Does anyone have any recommendation for a ROM that works well and is actually usable? Thanks!
Anyone??!! I recently put kashmellow (tduros android M). Gapps no longer works so I didn't install that. Many people say its fast w/no gapps. But mine is barely usable. So slow. What the heck happened to these devices? Thing used to be a beast! Believe it came with ICS
I use KatKiss timduru site and xda thread, it is Android 4.4.4 ROM and it is quite fast an somewhat usable. I also have old Google Play Services 10.5.42 that mostly do not crash so even Play store works. However many new apps either cannot be installed or crash because of missing NEON support, sometimes older apk versions work. Basically I keep it for lot of old stuff that still works but don't update anything (or keep Titanium backup of apk+data and often restore back to old version when newer one crashes or needs newer play services).
