I moving into android development and have been trying to figure out what to buy as my "development phone". I know the nexus one is still available to developers, but it's almost a year old.
As I understand it one of the advantages of the nexus one is that you are able to run a version of android unmolested by manufactures and carriers. It also receives any and all android update first.
Once it goes away what phone is going to replace it? What phone will run a pure version of android, and be in line for the first updates?
It seems the nexus one is approaching the end of this life cycle. If you were a new developer and on the limited budget (and which of us isn't) what phone would you buy right now for development purposes?
Thanks!
Nexus Two is being developed by Samsung and is supposed to be out before the end of the year.
yea samsung is having a press event on the 8th of this month. supposedly they are gonna announce a nexus 2 or something. so time will tell
hp://www.engadget.com/2010/10/28/nexus-two-does-or-doesnt-exist-is-or-isnt-being-released/
Thanks for the info!
Rumors are flying on the N2...Nov 8th should clear up some of them.
Will the Nexus 2 be similar to the Galaxy S series?
This is interesting. I think the Nexus Two still might come out of the HTC corner.

Makes sense. Doesn't HTC build more Android phones than anyone else? Plus I was a little suspicious about the SAMOLED screen on the N2. If there is a shortage as claimed, I can't see why would Samsung put it on a "non-Samsung" branded phone?
It looks like samsung is making the nexus two, and it's going to be delayed. See link below. In short samsung ran across a major hardware issue during dog food testing. So, we know it's coming from samsung, we just don't know when

Pretty sure there gonna call it Nexus S, like LG w/ Optimus One, and all the other Optimus phones, besides Samsung's phones arent the best, and if you really want a phone for just development the original droid can be found for around $200 on ebay, its easy to root and can be easily overclocked to 800Mhz, which I know isn't as amazing but it'll definitely get you the most bang for your buck. (just searched for it on ebay theres one thats about to end in a minute going for $150 so you can probably find for cheaper).
only thinq i hope its that htc make it, cus i dnt trust samsung. all the SGS are crap. they are made of plastic and lagg like crazy lol. hope the famous nexus two keeps the htc quality standarts.

I can't believe I'm not in a hurry to jump ship to the Galaxy S2. The Cappy has been such a good experience as a phone and it's still able to do whatever I need it to do. When the Fuze came out I couldn't help but be there the first day to pick one up. I was compelled to have the latest and greatest, and the abilities a new smartphone would allow. The same happened the release day of the Captivate.
Sure, it's had its issues (GPS and capped data speeds come to mind) but between the performance of hardware and the constant ROM updates from the dev community, I just don't feel that compulsion to move on from the Captivate. For me it's been a great phone and it's made me a big fan of Samsung's products. Oh I'll get a Galaxy S2 here in a month or two when the price comes down a bit. But I'm still happy with my Captivate and I'll keep it around as a backup.
ditto
i will likely wait until december unless the deal is too good to pass up.
Want to see what develops with the nexus prime.
Some info claims it will be a Verizon Exclusive but i am skeptical. I think that it is more likely we will see it launch exclusively on verizon with a 30-60 window before other carriers get it....so i am not giving up on the prime....the solid metal body construction alone will be worth the wait...just hope ATT gets it.

That is what has my attention as well...Galaxy Note.
I don't feel the need to upgrade from my Captivate either. Its a weird feeling, I use to be such a phone whore, now I look at new phones and feel they can't do a whole lot for me (personally, I know the phones are actually huge upgrades) that my Captivate can't do.
I HATE how ALL of the new phones being announced are so huge! 4.3" isn't TOO bad, but I do prefer my 4" screen. They're just getting bigger too, I want the Nexus Prime so badly, but there's no way I'm getting it with a 4.65" screen. My upgrade isn't until May 2012 and I'm questioning if there will even be a phone out there I like by then.

I'm with you guys. Once the GS II finally came out, I am not as excited. The last ROM I put on is great and until that note comes out, paying 200 for the GS2 isn't so alluring.
Especially with LTE on horizon and the Note, which will be awesome.
It's like an old friend, even knowing something is better out there, I'm not ready to trade in my old worn in shoes

The article says 4.6". It may not be so bad since that probably includes the buttons at the bottom, I'll just have to see it in person, but I still think it will be a very large device.
I'm a captivate owner and I really love it. I will not change it in a while..
The only two things that I don't really like in Captivate are very bad sensitive buttons (well, I replaced screen after it was broken, and than buttons were like that) and very bad battery life, especially with MIUI
But speed and functionality are just grear. And still love the screen with maximum brightness. I think I will buy Galaxy Note or Nexus Prime, will see...
I'm with you guys, but not by choice. I have a contract to fulfil.

I'll also be waiting for the Note.
I just looked up the Galaxy Note. Wow...! That thing looks amazing. It might be just a bit too big but I'm really considering jumping on that.
I'm with you guys. There is no real reason to upgrade just yet. With a good custom ROM (Cog5), it does everything I ask of it, and does it quickly. The screen is just amazing, and only the SAMOLED Plus beats it, if you ask me. Since I'm not on contract, I can switch when I want, but I see nothing out there I just gotta have. The Prime may change that, but if it is CDMA, then I'm out. Big Red is too expensive for my blood.

So it seems my thread questioning about anyone getting the Relay has turned in the the Dev thread for it since for some reason XDA doesnt want to make a thread dedicated to it. I personally ended up buying a Note 2 which is why I dont follow this thread anymore but I just recieved a PM saying the thread was moved so I figured I would change the title of the thread from "Any one planning on getting the Galaxy Relay 4G" to "Galaxy S Relay 4G Development Thread".
Definitely looking into a replacement for my G2, haven't really seen anything convincing thusfar. With a S4, this just might do it.

Thats what im thinking. I hope that the rumor of a 5mp camera is wrong and it ends up being an 8mp but even if it is a 5 as long as it has a good sensor and flash ill be happy. So far it seems it will basically be a Galaxy S3 with a 4" screen and a QWERTY minus 1GB ram which really doesnt matter. Ive never owned a samsung before but i guess they are really easy to root with a program from samsung called odin. Hopefully CM will be supporting it.
Either way, it could be the next best upgrade for Desire Z owners. Especially with so many discouraged people with HTC and their policy's. They can keep them, and their phones. No ICS update, not even for related phones where we could bum the driver over. Not to forget how locked down the phone is. Plus Samsung phones are more consistant.

Yeah Samsung seems to be the way to go these days. HTC locks their bootloaders, both HTC and LG dont provide updates, Sony phones are just not even close to the competition. Samsung provides the ODIN program so you can do what you please with what you paid for plus it seems they are providing pretty decent updates with the S2 and Note both year old devices getting Jelly been. Where my year old G2x is still on GB.
I definitely plan to replace my wife's G2 with the Relay. I've had a Vibrant and now the TMO GS2, I love working with Samsung phones, much easier.
Only if confirmed specs come out. Some new phones that aren't super popular are getting outdated specs like the new mytouch lines by huawei

Yeah those new mytouch phones phones had been rumored for awhile now and the specs of them were outed well before they even came out i mean really a single core phone? Where going to be seeing quad core phones in the states soon
The only tmo mytouch that wasnt terrible was the first one. I had the slide and it was ok but had a locked bootloader and the genuis button is so stupid, never would buy another mytouch. I was really hoping that those rumors of a G3 were true but hopefully this Relay will turn out to be a great phone.
Hot dang that looks promising! Although I do love my g2 it'd be nice to have decent specs

Or Touchwiz for that matter, at least that mistake of an interface can be fixed with another ROM. Just sayin.

The keyboard looks nice to me, who knows how it will feel since no one has tried it yet. I agree with the touch wiz but im hoping cm will support it.
What's the problem with Samsung keyboards?
HTC keyboards are the only ones I've liked. The spacing, depth of key press, and layout are the only ones that I've cared to use. Everything else I've tried feels like I'm using something cheaply made.

Either way I'm waiting for my T-Mobile contract to end. Once that happens, I'm going to give T-Mobile a decision to make. Either give me a new phone of my choosing, or I switch carriers. A lot of my friends do this, and they end up with a brand new phone, like Samsung Galaxy S3's, but they're out of contract and desperate to keep you in it.
Carriers tend to give new contracts better deals for phones then those who just got their upgrade. Also, there's a lot of other carriers who offer a lot more for less then the big US carriers.

Idk man id love to see a G3 as much as anyone else here but I dont see it happening especially with the stupid G4x thats going to be coming to tmobile. It wouldnt make sense for them to release a phone named G4x and then a phone named G3. G4x will be just as garbage as the G2x, it will have awesome hardware and a quad core but will have no software support from LG or NVidia.
Do you guys think it will work in sweden? Then someone needs to send me one. Htc can **** off now. To bad i dont like samsung build quality and feel. To plasticky

I looked at some of the similar threads but they are old and devices change so rapidly so I am starting a new one.
I am looking for some thoughts, opinions, etc on a new device. I have to buy my device on Craigslist, eBay or somewhere because I have an old Verizon plan with unlimited data and can't upgrade without losing my plan and paying their upgrade fee.
I have been using a Toro Nexus on Verizon for about a year. I have been running CM10 and making updates as they are released. Recently my phone took a header out of my truck and now the screen is cracked. So, it is probably time to get something more up to date.
A couple things I am looking at evaluating are:
ROMS and development love available for devices. Which ones get the most love?
If I get something unlocked as in straight from Google like the Maguro would I be able to get a radio which works on Verizon?
Cost is a consideraton as well. For example I like the price of the S3 right now compared to the S4 on CL.
Any thoughts, opinions, facts, guidance, etc would be awesome!

the Galaxy nexus is a great phone it saddens me to see that you would like another phone. but im not you so lets get start with phone shopping shall we?
Google
I can see that you like all the rom and development for devices i happy for that!, most of the time you would want one of googles flagship phones that is plain ol stock android (nexus s, galaxy nexus, nexus 4 etc..) googles is so great to us since its stock android its much easyer to flash roms and put other goodies on our phones! i have heard the nexus 4 is one of the best phones around right now (not to mention the new white nexus 4 thats coming out soon with Android 4.3!) so if its on your provider i would recomend that from google!
Samsung
So from what you said you want a phone around the price of a S3, from that right there i would recomend a S3! Samsung does a great job with their phones its not the same stock android like the galaxy nexus they have spiced android up to what they call touchwiz which is a very smooth version for their launchers. a S2 might sound old but even that would be a great phone (i dont know about the specs galaxy neuxs might be a little newer so S3 might be better to get). rooting should be very simple all i had to do for my S2 was to flash a pda file from odin so its again easy to be able to join in on all the development. i think i have heard that the S3 (and maby S2) is getting alot of Goodies from the S4.
LG
i have only had some LG phones and in the past they werent so good but their newest flagship the Optimus G Pro is sposed to be aso good as the HTC one and S4 i dont think LG has their own type of launcher such as samsungs touchwiz, htcs Sense, or motorolas motor blur. so that probably means stock android and pretty easy to root and flash stuff.
HTC
the HTC dream was the first android phone, all of their phones are amazing i have had many of their devices, sense is a very smooth, sense 4.0 and up is sposed to be great. the One and its new blinkfeed feature i have heard can get old within a month or two so im not sure. about rooting with htc phones can be a pain. its different between each phone my droid incredible i had to unlock the bootloader turn s-on off downgrade just to be able to get root and cwm and its all a big pain, htc just dosent want us to screw with it maby. for my htc inspire 4g i had to just only unlock the bootloader and could flash a root from there but still was a pain, so if you can deal with some of the fears of easily bricking your phone you can try these phones!
there are alot of (im just going to call them third party but they arent really) third party phones such as huawei, ZTE, kyocera that some are deff better phones from these people that are better than the galaxy nexus just ask if you would like me to explain them!

Thank you for all the info. Much appreciated. The Galaxy Nexus (Toro) is a wonderful phone. I believe it is the longest running in my pocket. It broke my heart when it took a swan dive out of my truck Sunday. I would absolutely go with another of these. The question on that topic is could a guy get the Maguro to work on Verizon's CDMA network? I don't know that much about the hardware but I'd LOVE to try Ubuntu Touch.
There is a local guy who has an S3 advertised on CL for $175. I'd have to evaluate that guy first though. Would I be as happy with the development on the S3 as I have been on the Toro?

The Infuse can't go on forever, and people get new phones eventually. It's just the nature of tech. I myself moved on from the Infuse, but have fond memories of it, since it was my first smartphone. But greener pastures were calling me. I now have the Moto G, which is a great phone for the price. It absolutely smokes the Infuse speed-wise. And as soon as the Nexus 6 comes out, I'm getting it. Yeah, I've become a performance whore. :victory:
But I will still come here to see how long the Infuse will live on. I say 6 months to a year, and these threads will be pretty much dead.

I agree. I really wish I had time to get into development for this phone as I will likely be using it until the hardware quits on me and I'm forced to upgrade.
Are there any other Infuse related forums out there? XDA has always seemed like the most active, but I've never really looked for an alternative.

i too have moved on to a moto razr hd....doesn't even compare. the kernel is really outdated, i recently changed the battery from the original but i found that the batt life was just not sufficient with the new roms. i have mine on infinitum rom which seems to be the best upgrade for me from gb vis a vis battery. my moto lasts easily all day and more....but it was a great way to learn modding.
i have 2 new devices but still keep my infuse updated with the latest BeanStalk (would perfer omni or pa or something not so heavy)thats not to say i dont love beanstalk and scotts work or appreciate it, as i do i just wish there were more options to flash.
atm have my sIII running vanir
and my Nexus 7 running Omni, Ubuntu touch, PA, and slimkat... (thanks to multirom)

There would be one more ROM that is active in the thread if the Carbon ROM maintainer could get the data/radio issues he's having sorted out, but he doesn't use the infuse as a main phone, so doesn't have a sim for it which means people have to test for him and I haven't seen any fixes pushed to their gerrit either recently. And plus I don't know if he has any help from any other devs. Oh well, as you've all said, she has to die some day. Yeah, the infuse was the best phone I had too, up until I got my Moto G. After trying out some of the new phones a few months back, I could no longer hold onto the infuse. Things were slow and slightly flaky at times. Sure, it's a usable phone, but I wanted more. I wanted native KitKat, speed, more RAM, upgrades from the manufacturer, and to be more future-proof.
And after I get the Nexus 6, it will be the best I've had. A year later, something else will be the best, and it goes on and on.................
Just because the infuse is the best you've had, doesn't make it any more desirable at this point. Not putting you down for using it, as I had it for almost 2 yrs. and serviced me well. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before this infuse forum becomes a ghost town.

true since the GS5 is already gonna be released (to the public) and is the new one gonna be called the HTC Two? cause that would be funny
the infuse was an interim device to get an att 4g samsung phone out the door before the s2, which was released shortly thereafter. the result was a phone with the internals of the s1 (processor, ram, ect) and externals of the s2 (screen, camera, housing, ect) and of course a 4g hspa+ radio. the phone was an accidental success, selling 9 million devices, probably due to good reviews, superfluous awards, and a steep price drop after the s2 was released. att tried to copy the idea, albeit less successfully, with the skyrocket in an attempt to release a 4g lte phone. but theres no need for interim devices anymore to push a new radio technology as all phones since the s3 (the most successful smartphone ever) have had the latest and greatest lte radios.
the new htc will be called "the new htc one" a la the "the new ipad". its a terrible name and wont help the struggling company push new hardware. which is sad as it looks to be a very nice phone.
ill be saying goodbye to my infuse tomorrow as att has decided to replace it with an s4. ive been putting off buying a new phone. mostly because i have wanted to keep my options open and not sign a new contract. and ive been nitpicking on new devices as an excuse not to buy one. but the infuse is getting old an is scraping the minimum requirements for android and its getting time to upgrade. newer phones look like they will have a longer shelf life as even newer versions provide very little reason to upgrade. the s5 has almost nothing better than on the s4. its bigger, thicker, and heavier than the s4 to make room for a minuscule update in screen size, with rather useless features like a heart rate monitor (which you can do with you camera now anyways) and a terrible swipey finger print reader. you can also pick up a moto g, a very powerful phone, for chump-change.

heh. id probably pass. my brother had one. it didnt quite get the development it need.
I like my Infuse, but I have since moved on to the HTC MyTouch 4G Slide (a phone that is just as old). I wanted something a little smaller (one that could be carried in a lanyard case), but more importantly I missed having a physical keyboard (which is why I hung on to my LG Breeze feature phone for so long). The MT4GS covers both these things, and I'm mostly happy with it (battery drain with CM 10.1 is at the top of my annoyances).
I have been thinking of what to do with the Infuse next. Currently it is a media player and a backup phone, but I think I may hand it down to my sister, as she has a bit of an interest in smartphones now. However I'm having trouble parting ways with it. Oh well.
Sad to see a forum dwindle away to nothing.
I agree, it's very sad. But, time will always move forward and technology goes with it. All the devs for this device has made the infuse a legendary device, and I hate to see it become a thing of the past.

Don't play Taps too early. The latest ROM, 4.4.275, has proven to be quite a solid release for Infuse. Don't be surprised when Android 4.4.3 makes it to the Infuse.
