Hi,
Anyone know a link to how to set correct settings to use manual control for XZ to get great pictures instead of using auto? I did a google search, nothing really comes up. Unless I am using wrong key words in my search.
I'd also be interested in some sort of guide to squeezing the best photos possible from this camera.
I tried in manual mode but whenever i try adjust iso the shutter speed would become auto and when i adjust shutter speed the iso i believe becomes auto too

That would be because it is shooting in priority mode, not fully manually. The aperture is fixed in smartphone cameras, so the only way to use a faster shutter speed without making the picture darker is to also increase the sensitivity, and the only way to use a slower shutter speed without making the picture brighter is to decrease the sensitivity (and vice versa).
There are no "best" settings for Manual mode. The settings you choose will depend on the picture you want to take. The "best" settings for Manual mode if you want to set and forget them are to put the camera back in Auto mode, and let it choose the settings for you. That's true on any cameraphone with manual and auto modes, too.
I also would like a noob guide to (smartphone) photography. I never know what to set in manual mode.

If I get a moment, I'll make one when my phone arrives and I've had a chance to see what settings they've added since my just-died Xperia Z2.
Anyone got any guide?
Very generally speaking, since the aperture is fixed (at f/2.0), the USUALLY best way to take a sharper photo is to use as low of an ISO you can. PERSONALLY I find that a lot of the oversharpening you get with Xperia cameras comes from the auto mode using too high ISO. If you define the ISO yourself in manual mode, the SONY camera will automatically choose a shutter speed. So, the bottom limit of the ISO you can set will generally be if the image is too dark, or you can't hold the phone steady enough for a longer exposure. As a general rule of thumb, in broad daylight with great lighting you can use ISO 50 or 100. Indoors during the day I might try 200. At night indoors, like in a restaurant I'll use 400. And in darker shots I'll try ISO 800.

First of all make sure you use higher mpx option. Second is adjust settings when you actually taking photos which I found best way for me. That way you can see how photos will come out in real time and then snap it.
Do you guys get better results using the on-screen shutter button or the physical button?

I prefer to use the on-screen button, it's a smoother action for me to hold the button with my thumb to focus and then gently let go.

- when you exit settings for the first time, you get a black screen. Force close the app, and start again, it will be ok second time.
-Snapdragon users should leave "Fix black level Front camera" on 0 too!
-on highly exposed areas purple color is still there. At least on exynos.

Here is the fix for purple colour on exposed areas on S7 Exynos. I only fixed Pixel XL device, so use that. As a side affect noise increased... But well lit shots are very sharp in portrait mode now.
You can enable HDR+ for front, but it is very unstable. Success depends on exposure somehow. If it hangs, you have to restart the app to take hdr shots again.
Reenabled medium, very high etc hdr settings. Not that I see any difference in quality, but some of you asked for it... Non default settings will make portrait mode less stable for sure.

4th version:
Download: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Lg4uuoiWM4c_XS8KZp4NXOsFkIY4M50B/view?usp=drivesdk
Thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/themes/google-camera-portrait-mode-t3736859
Bugs:
Changes vs. V3:
-front cam HDR+ workaround for S7. Still to be tested in very bright conditions. Turn on "HDR+ front camera fix" if you have an S7.
-front cam: normal pics in auto HDR+ mode are saved now
-front cam: improved non-HDR+ quality
-added a custom auto-exposure mode for HDR+ (only HDR+, so not for portrait). It is called "Slow shutter" because it will decrease shutter speed as much as possible (1/10 secs on S7) in bad light. The result: much lower ISO and noise. Of course fast moving objects will probably get blurry more easily. Only tested this on S7, on other devices it might need some tuning.
5th version:
Download:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TLi5mt9DDlraF5ncE4SbV7lcfHpeqv4X/view?usp=sharing
Thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/themes/google-camera-portrait-mode-t3736859
Changes vs. V4:
-added more shutter options. Selecting "Stock camera2 api" will get rid of rainbow effect, but dynamic range is poor, because camera can't underexpose fast enough if auto shutter control is on.
-added antibanding modes. Works up to 1/149 sec shutter speed. Only select 50hz or 60hz in case of banding problems, because it can cause suboptimal shutter speed otherwise!
-denoise strength for HDR+ and portrait. For front cam you need to select about 2-300% to really see the difference. Back cam is much more sensitive to this setting.
-HDR+ dynamic range control (called Underexposure multiplier). Reduce below 100% to decrease rainbow effect.
-added Samsung specific metering modes. To enable touch to expose, select "Controlled by GCam".
-added Samsung Live HDR mode. Adds some dynamic range to modes where HDR+ is not available like zero shutter Portrait mode. No Rainbow effect in HDR+ mode if this is selected, but noise is too much unfortunately!
-you can enable HDR+ for Portrait mode by disabling "Portrait ZSL mode". Better dynamic range, custom shutter control, but no zero shutter lag.
-custom white balance. I set greens to 96% to get rid of the greenish look where I sit right now, but it is a matter of taste probably.
-modified HDR+ quality settings. Choose "Very high" if you were using "Medium" before (unstable for me). The recommended "Default" setting is the same as before, it is somewhere between medium and high.
6th version:

Thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/themes/google-camera-portrait-mode-t3736859
Changes vs. V5:
-fixed bug which caused hdr+ shot failure sometimes!
-attempted to fix HDR+ portrait mode (can be activated by disabling portrait ZSL mode).
-added some description to "HDR+ parameters". For example: 8/10 burst, 1500 MB means: HDR+ operates with 8 shot bursts. Portrait mode (ZSL) operates with 10 shot bursts at most. Estimated total memory usage: 1500 MB (including camera2 api buffers).

Thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/themes/google-camera-portrait-mode-t3736859
Changes vs. V6:
-HDR+ setting (off, auto or on) should be permanent now
8th version :

Thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/themes/google-camera-portrait-mode-t3736859
Changes vs. V7:
-made Pixel 2017 ZSL config work on our device. I had to disable reprocessing, and smart touch to focus. Also some experimental Pixel specific features like hybrid AE cannot work on our device, so don't expect Pixel like quality. Basically the only change versus Nexus 6 config is that if the HDR+ switch is set to the middle, you will have zero shutter lag HDR+ instead of auto HDR+. ZSL HDR+ is the same thing we already had before in portrait mode. So less dynamic range, and more noise in low light because slow shutter mode is not available. However it is much better in good/medium light if you make photos of unpredictable things like kids, because it processes images already taken in the background. In low light, or high contrast scenes please use Enhanced (nonZSL) HDR+! In "HDR+ parameters" setting I recommend using one of the Pixel 2017 options, because they should be more stable regarding memory leak. "High", "very high" and even "default" leak memory if pixel 2017 config is used.
-BSG mod settings moved to Advanced settings.
-you can now use portrait mode without zoom
-portrait mode pictures can be saved directly to DCIM/Camera. However: the built-in gallery can get confused by this, so I recommend using Google Photos instead (camera.use_photos must be enabled in dev settings). And even more importantly: before V8, the built-in gallery in GCam will delete all portrait pics from DCIM/Camera if you delete a single portrait pic from DCIM/Camera!!!! I patched this in V8, but if you were to go back to a previous version you can get into trouble easily!!!!
-you can modify some internal denoise settings. Unfortunately I couldn't find a combination which improves quality in all situations, but feel free to play around with them. Turn on the switches to apply changes.
-fixed a rare background battery consumption issue.
-camcorder fixes: front cam is working now, enabled optical stabilization, Samsung HDR can be turned on for video.

Slow motion is fixed for S7 (I might have broke the app for other devices completely by doing this), turn off live hdr if in 240 fps mode or the lights will go off after a few secs

Bonus!
You can also use AR Stickers if you are on Oreo
Install AR Core first https://github.com/google-ar/arcore-android-sdk/releases/download/sdk-preview2/arcore-preview2.apk
Then AR Stickers https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Z1KgNE5OhkLhbwy-XrGWCzJc2AcK0Ocz/view
Force close Gcam and re-open it!
Done!
Note that those bugs reports are referred to Galaxy S7 so they may not be valid for Galaxy S8.
Also keep in mind that every time there's an update you have to clean install the app or at least wipe data's app
Every time you change settings in the app you have to close it from recent panel(or maybe better directly force close) and reopen the app to apply new setting
Because many users have problems with this app i will share my working configs in the attachment working on Oreo CRAP/CRB7
for v7. If you want to try the Pixel 2017 ZSL in v8.2 the settings are shown below

Seriously i went back to Nougat, best decision ever google cam now is pretty stable and fast. No more waiting to take next photo. lol and it's cooler too no more heat up like crazy and wasting battery life.
For first timer s8 user, Highly recommended S8 optimized version from @IDan1109
Otherwise check these out :
Because this version was made for S7 user, first thing u have to do is go to camera setting which is located at top left > developer setting > Disable "camera.enable_micro" immediately. Now you can freely try any setting with trial and errors. After tons of test i highly recommend advanced user, uninstall your 8.2 instead of replace 8.2 with 8.3b. reinstall your app and try new settings instead of stacking it together. Trust me clean install always better.
(for example test your Slow shutter result shutter time if it does not give 1/3s 1/4s each shot, your version of gcam is corrupted)
updated v8.3B
This is my latest config stable with v8.3B. Optimized after alot of experiments.
Now you can capture best lowlight picture and still give you finest detail possible.
First, pick HDR+ enhanced to force hdr to capture lowlight with less noise.
disable flashlight. (only use it if you forced to do, gcam will shot with huge yellow gained but can be edit it back to natural color in lightroom or pts)
*Enter setting > First page > "Slow Shutter x2" or X4 (kinda gimmick anyway but switch to faster shutter speed if u wanna take fast moving object),
Antibanding = Controlled by GCam (60hz give tons of noises),
75% underexposure multiplier NoneZSL HDR+,
100% denoise back and front, Metering Mode = Center (Gcam will allow u to touch to focus.)
Live HDR = Disable/enabled (higher contrast but a bit blurry in the dark area, so only enable it only if u have good light source.
(personaly i left this disabled)
Portrait ZSL mode = enable, Portrait Zoom = disable (turn on if u want closer look).
HDR+ White balance = no change.
Tuning Back cam = Taimen
Tuning Front cam = Bullhead
*Advanced menu > HDR+ = Fast Stable or faster, Config camera HDR+ = Nexus 6 HDr+ Auto (less noise),
turn on = auto HDR+ front camera, ...etc
Turn on (off all those fixes, with exynos in it if you're snapdragon S8)
The rest in this page can leave it there, or set it to your liking, not important.
* Developer settings >
Disable Camera.use_photos and cameraprogress_overlay
Disable "camera.enable_micro"
_______
wanna get rid of rainbow effect ? Turn on Live HDR Samsung (this will introduce noise but the rainbow gone)
Trick to take picture in daytime is use your finger to focus on the dark area (not darkest to avoid blowout the highlight, then wait for HDR+ to work the magic. (u can lower the highlight in LightRoom later on anyway but byebye rainbow)
For future update you should go check it here : the owner of this page rapidly update all the new versions which just came out and even translate it to english.
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
For example this guy : https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog107/
took v8.2 and modified it then add more shutter speed options, too bad from my test it's not optimized for s7/s8. alot of crash but once u get working setting it's not better in term of image quality + stablility VS v8.2 miniuser123

how?mine is not taking any photos in front portrait..
I'm just curious about how people use Photo Pro. When I turn on Photo Pro, it goes directly to Shutter Speed mode. I have auto-focus continuous on, focus area wide, and meter area multi. I initially shoot with single-exposure and only move to continuous shooting as needed. Flash is off, white balance is auto, Auto HDR and D-'Range Optimizer are off. I have the histogram turned on.
I'm curious about your starting point and any observations you have on my parameters.
Might have to look under settings and see what it says under there like last mode or something
Thanks. I have that one set to open in Photo Pro on last mode used. It opens to "S-Mode", shutter speed priority.
So, I like to shoot cinematic videos with a smartphone.
I have four different apps that I use for this (Filmic Pro, ProShot, ProTake and mcpro24fps).
All four of these apps work just fine on a Xiaomi Note 9 phone.
The problem is that the apps cannot lock the exposure in manual mode when I install them on my Realme 5 Pro.
Even if both ISO and Shutter Speed are manually locked by me at my desired values, the exposure still shifts and compensates when I pan the camera from dark to light areas. This renders my shots completely useless.
The interesting part is that if I switch to Auto mode on any of these apps, and then lock the exposure reticle while in Auto, I no longer get shifting exposure. However in Auto mode I am not able to set my Shutter Speed and ISO to the desired values and I must rely on whatever values the app in use automatically chooses for me. This ruins the cinematic look of my shots.
In brief: there must be a setting in Realme 5 Pro's firmware that does not allow the apps to set manual lock on ISO, Shutter Speed and on Exposure in general.
What could that faulty setting be?
Do I have to root my phone in order to correct things somehow? I don't know nothing about root access etc...
Or should I just sit and pray that a future firmware update would solve this issue?
I think I found out what is causing the problem. It is called "dynamic tone mapping" and iPhone users have the same issue with film making apps because of it.
Is there any way to turn the dynamic tone mapping function on Realme 5 Pro off when shooting and encoding videos?
