Just curious if there are any other Thunderbolt users who are experiencing the same data issues that I am with the hotspot feature.
When using the hotspot, my data connection will repeatedly drop in and out, to the point of making the hotspot unusable.
This is the second device, first one returned and exchanged for the same reason.
I live in an area with great 4G and have never dropped from 4G to 3G because the 4G coverage is so widespread.
I'll turn on the hotspot and then at some point as I'm streaming Grooveshark or surfing and browsing, my data connection drops, and then begins to cycle on and off.
I have changed channels, trying every one and have taken a video of this behaviour, showing it to the store managers at my local Verizon store.
I have also sent the video to a level 2 tech support guy hoping he has some clue as to what is going on, have not heard back yet.
You can literally watch the 4G icon cycle on and off of the signal indicator, not switching to 3G, simply losing a connection all together.
I Googled and found a link to an Engadget article which documented the same issue.
I'd appreciate any help for those who may have experienced and / or have fixed this issue.
You can try to force the phone to use LTE only instead of LTE/EvDO hybrid connection. Go to Market and download the LTE On/Off app, then follow the instructions to make it LTE only and try again.
I have experienced similar problem yesterday but it has been great today so far. Could be a software problem, could be a network problem, or both.
I've been experiencing the same issue since I picked up the phone at launch. It occurs on my PC, my Xoom, and my iPad 2. I can count on the data connection eventually dropping during normal surfing, though I can usually accelerate the process by opening up a video on Youtube and jumping back and forth to random parts.
So far VZW tech support has not been of assistance, not acknowledging that there may be a larger problem despite issues documented at engadget as well as threads at androidcentral.com and VZW's own community forum.
I have experienced the same problem. I found a remedy but it is a pain. If you switch your preferred network to LTE Mode only, turn off mobile network, switch to airplane mode, switch off airplane mode, then turn mobile network back on, it should be stable. If its not, try a reboot. Usually I will not drop connection after this. The only problem with LTE Mode as your preferred network is that it will not drop to 3g if you lose 4g coverage, it goes straight to 1x for the most part. I hope they get these bugs worked out soon because it is rather annoying to deal with for power users.
So after sending the vid to the level two tech support at Verizon, he replied via email that this is a known issue with no known resolution date. I guess now we know why the hotspot is free, it's a known issue that it doesn't work 100% for 100% of Thunderbolt users.
They have until 5/15 to fix it, or extend the free period I guess. How can they charge for a service that has a known issue?
I've spoken to four level two techs regarding the matter, one said it was a "known issue," the other three stated they were not aware of any issues.
Kinda sucks - this is almost like antennagate
next time your data goes out dial ##778 and go into edit mode. Password is 000000. Under modem settings change "Rev. A" to enable if it isn't already AND MAKE SURE YOU COMMIT CHANGES.

The issue here is 4g data dropping when using the mobile hotspot. EVDO revisions aren't involved.

I have experience a similar issue with 3G albeit not often, but when I'm trying to download large files, or even small ones at that, my 3G will just drop. Then it flips back. Then drops. It lasts for 15 minutes and then it's fine.
My hotspot keeps dropping connection enough that it makes it difficult to do anything other than surf. Its happened on multiple ROMs for me. I even went back to stockROM and still had this issue pop up. My fix has been to just disconect from hotspot and then start surfing from my thunderbolt. Once im recieving data again to my device I can reconnect hotspot and Im up and running again.
Sometimes tho, my 3g will just drop all together and I have to toggle Lte or evdo and then back to cdma auto. Toggling between network types seems to get me back and running......sometimes. And sometimes I just have to wait cause nothing works. I have noticed if I do a complete wipe and install ROM again things start working again for awhile.
Sidenote: Dont live in 4g area.
Sorry to be re-opening this topic, but has anyone heard anything new about this problem? I use the hotspot intermittently and it would actually be worth the price to me so I was wondering if anyone knows if there will be a fix.
Also, do any of the other applications that allow tethering after rooting have this problem?
Yea its got to be the radio because I flashed both leak and stock and used mobile hotspot and root tether and both would drop data several times but what was funny is when it would drop signal most of the times I could just awake my phone not even unlock but just awake it the data connection would start back up again
Maybe you could try this until a fix or better 4g coverage comes out

Are you guys seeing this only in the stock hotspot app or in apps like wireless tether also?

I haven't actually used any other application other than the preinstalled hotspot application.
I'm new to this and was under the impression that you need to root your phone in order to use other ones. Being new, I'm not prepared to make a mistake doing that.

The problem is due to the buggy mobile hotspot app. Same problem on my thunderbolt. It is not a hardware issue but software. Trust me, been there and done that. Fix is to root and installed "wireless tether" for rooted user. You won't look back especially after May 15th.
I have the data drop issue with the mobile hotspot, but no problem at all with wifi tether.
Alright I guess rooting is on my agenda today. Thanks.
I'm having the same issues on 3g, using the mobile hotspot app and Barnacle Wifi. I will try the Wireless Tether app and see if it works any better.
My gf's tb has been getting terrible data service since accepting the ota a few weeks ago. Her phone is rooted but runs a stock rom. Anyone else having this issue?
If you are s off and the radio from the previous version was better you could flash the radios from it and see if that helps.

I've been having problems for the last week or so. I'm dropping my connection a lot and even when I'm showing a steady 4G signal, things are moving a lot slower than I'm used to. I've seen people with other Verizon phones complaining too so I'm not sure it has anything to do with the recent update.
I was having issues like that the other day. I had to put my phone in airplane mode and take it back out just to get my phone to load webpages. The next day everything was fine again.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Same problem. I'll be fine for a while then I'll lose data connection completely, get it back, drop a few seconds later and this keeps going on for a while. For me, Google Maps has been something that drops my data connection after I launch. I eventually have to put airplane mode on/off for the connection to stabilize.
I've noticed these issues more frequently lately with various users in this forum. I myself have noticed data issues as well. Could it be a Verizon issue? If so many of us are having similar issues. I'm running eternity r248, great Rom but occasionally have these data drops. I'm in a good 4G coverage area.

I'm running Thundershed 1.6 and the most recent leaked radios. As far as I can tell there is an issue on Verizons end. For the past 4 days I've had a strong connection to a 4G tower but data doesn't work at all until i switch to 3G.
While troubleshooting this I flashed a new ROM, radios, kernels, hard/soft resets, battery pulls, reseat SIM card, everything. Nothing seemed to work so I'm convinced we just have to wait for Verizon to fix things.

Since about a week ago my LTE data has been frequently dropping in and out in previously known good areas and it will not transition to 3G. Fed up I decided to go into ##778# and change eHRPD to EVDO. Has been stable so far but more time will tell.
Update: It's still dropping in and out. Trying OpenMobile leak radio since I had good experience with it in the past.
There's ongoing data issues on Verizon's end, particularly on and near the east coast. Apparently, they're trying some different authentication settings that are resulting in mobile data automatically unchecking itself in settings, data drops, weak signal, and inconsistent signal. Hopefully Verizon will get it together soon.

I reported my issues to tech support the other day and finally managed to get it bumped up to the next level today.
The tech knew nothing about any network problems and when he did a search for customers filing similar complaints in my area (Metro-Detroit), he found nothing unusual that would lead him to believe that there was a widespread issue.
He is convinced that there's either a problem with my sim card or the phones radio. He mentioned that they have been having a lot of problems with sim cards failing and said that in his experiences, they have a life expectancy of around 6 months before they start acting up.
He is sending me a new sim card and replacement phone via Fed Ex so that I can test out both of his theories.
I called yesterday to talk about my data issues and the tech is sending me another bolt and Sim card with no questions asked

Still waiting for the SIM to show up, it was shipped separately.

I'd like to think that it's as simple as replacing the SIM card but I have a feeling it's a network thing.

most likely is. Been fighting with data issues for three weeks. 4g is completely useless lately because of the connection problems. And since they dropped a bunch of 3g towers around here, 3g signal just sucks. Lucky to be able to open a web page a couple times a day downtown in my city.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Sadly, I was right. Swapped out SIM cards today and within minutes, was having the same problems.
What's most annoying is that this appears to only be an isolated problem in certain areas and with certain users. If it was widespread, Verizon would certainly know about it and be on top of things. I'm not even sure that anybody at any level knows that some of us are having these problems with data drops.
Disregard. It appears to be network issue all along.
I have the same horrible data dropping issue all the time. I live in Minnesota, if that helps. I bought this phone used on ebay and I don't think Verizon will send me a replacement, right?

PS I used to be on T-Mobile with my HTC One. I just couldn't resist the savings that RW gives me.

How's sprint service? I'm tempted, but everything I hear about it is horrible. I had sprint before and it was bad, especially data.
I had sprint before actually. I had a GSII that I bought on contract 30 days before the GSIII announced and launched. So I was stuck with a 4G wimax phone in an area where we have no sort of 4G. And I was stuck paying for that useless 4G.
I'm happy with republic since with WiFi I don't worry about call reception. And it roams on Verizon if needed.
And for data plans I can pay and use 3G if I wanted to or 4G if it ever comes here. But I'm happy not having data when driving or shopping. And only paying $10 makes me happy with that decision.
But yes I won't lie. Sprints 3G is usually abysmal. My fiancée just got an iPhone 5S on sprints one up. Now he's paying $96/month for the same service I get on a ****ty iSheep device.
If I wanted to use 4G I'd only have to pay $40/month and thats comparable to T-Mobile pre and postpaid. And republic let's you switxh plans twice a month if you want. They are talking of simply selling buckets of data too for people like me that are happy with just cell calls And texts with WiFi only data, but occasionally wish we had a bit of mobile data.

No input on Wi-Fi calling but I will chime in on Sprint services with the Moto X!
I am coming from and 18 month old Evo LTE, rooted to the Moto X with the Sprint SIM card installed (bought from MotoMaker Cyber Monday) Had to activate the phone through a chat conversation on the activation website.
-I will admit that I am now actually very pleased with Sprint service in my area....
-It actually connects really well to 4G and STAYS connected....
-It (usually) re-connects to 4G when in an area of 4G unlike with my Evo (meaning it would sometimes connect to 4G then the next day I wouldn't even be able to connect to force 4G in the same location)
-The Sprint 4G speeds SUCK at best though. Check Sensorly speeds in my 4G area..... you may see a 14mb but average would MAYBE be 6MB, me that's 3G speeds.
-I still am thinking of dropping Sprint. Sure it's unlimited but Sprint has taught me to rely on Wi-Fi.
Well doing some research I found that republic wireless uses sprint signal. Even doing a coverage check they say to look at sprints maps. So I also seen that bringing a sprint phone to republic wireless is not possible because of republics wifi calling or what they call hybrid calling has specific code baked into their phones Rom.
So with that info how hard would it be to extract that features code from their Roms for use on Sprint phone s? Or could a Sprint phone flash a republic rom and be able to use that wifi calling feature on Sprint.
Wifi Calling has always been closed source and will never be available on 3rd party ROM......If something change it would be #1 news on XDA
So just to put this out there. My cousin has a HTC one sprint phone and he was complaining how it kept popping up something about unable to connect to WiFi calling whenever he tried to call someone. I took a look at his phone and were settings in his phone related to WiFi calling. But it was wanting account information or a sip account. Thought that was interesting.

I think the SIP internet calling options were added waaay back in GB?. Maybe it wasn't until ICS. OP wants native wifi calling. Google Voice + Groove IP is about as close as you can get for now.
Odd, I thought you could activate Internet Calling with a build.prop change & something in the permissions folder... Noticed I had it on my CM10.1.3 Galaxy Note.

people on iphone for a while could use verizon messages to place wifi calls not sure about android you can try,and I would guess if verizon allows them then sure why not
what i would like to know if we are going to get it, seeing that we didn't get our phones from verizon.......

No reason for verizon to waste their time developing that for this phone when the have their own version of the phone to take care of.
Wifi calling is part of IMS, much like VoLTE. Doesn't really take much to go from VoLTE to Wifi calling. It just needs to be enabled. In some of the logs I have on 6.0, there are some IMS entries regarding VoLTE, VoWifi, ViLTE (Video over LTE), and ViWifi. Only VoLTE returns true back to the carrier.
Whether carriers will allow it is a different story altogether. Knowing Verizon, it'll be available only on Verizon branded devices (carrier variants). I wouldn't be surprised to see the Droid Turbo 2 getting VZW Wifi calling in 6.0.
I just got a cell signal booster from Verizon as my new house has little coverage. The rep informed me of WiFi calling coming but no exact time frame. So I had to spend $175 to purchase an already antiquated booster. Damn Verizon.
What's the difference between (carrier enabled) WiFi calling via the stock phone app versus calling someone via the Hangouts dialer app? Aren't they both essentially doing the same thing?

I have found the Hangouts Dialer to be unreliable. Sometimes it sounds like you are drowning under water to the other party. It also doesn't seem to ring on incoming calls due to an IPv6 bug with Android, that Google refuses to fix...unless you root and disable IPv6.

I realize it's too late for you, but for others, if you're out of, or near the end of your contract, you can usually get them to send you a network extender for free. I called them a few years ago, and told them how my contract was almost up, and I was going to explore other providers, for better service. Once I said that, they offered to send me the extender at no charge.

Carrier Wifi calling extends the carrier network over Wifi, so you still receive calls/texts outside of your service area or deep underground. What they do is allow connections through untrusted Wifi APs and use a secure tunneling connection to their IMS framework via the internet. So, when someone calls your phone, it routes it back to your phone over the same connection and you get the call over Wifi.
whats the likelihood that we will get this working for us, any technical hurdles is this something once verizon gets to other phones will we be able to port it. just curious this will be the determining factor for me buying unlocked phones if verizon is going to screw us over i might just have to switch carriers.....
