[Q] To change ROMs or not

So I typically root almost all my android devices once I get them. My Infinity was the first device I tried keeping stock unrooted as long as possible. I will be honest with saying that there were some times that I didn't even think about the fact if it was rooted or not. Unlike my phone I really only use it for class from time to time to take notes and mostly read books/comics or play games. However, I was utterly floored by the speed difference that my friend got out of his by rooting his. He picked up a TF700 about a month ago from ebay and rooted it the other day. We then spent yesterday testing it out with similar loads. His battery life was about an hour better than mine doing relatively the same thing (head to head gaming), watching netflix, and browsing a few comics. What really got me was the speed and decrease in lag. Honestly I didn't even realize the lag was so bad on mine (I guess I had grown use to it) compared to his.
So my question is this: Would I get even better performance / stability / battery life out of changing the rom to say Cyano or Paranoid or is the stock ROM minus the apps and a few tweaks from the threads the best I am going to get?
If anyone has any expriences they are willing to share with me I would greatly appreciate it.

I personally like Cromi/Cromi-X. I used Cyano for a while but settled on Cromi for the speed. Cromi is based on stock and optimized for speed, so if don't care about additional customization, I would say go for Cromi. But you will lose your warranty if you unlock the tablet to install custom ROMs. Not sure about stability/battery life improvements but I've never had issues with either on Cromi.

This is my two cents. Any custom rom and kernel that you pick will be faster than the stock. I am using Cromi X 4.7 and Hund 3.3.2. I believe that they are very major and stable. The battery life is depended on how you set your device up. Wifi and screen brightness are the most battery consumptions of all. You can go to the wifi advance setting and set it to never use wifi during sleep. You can lower the brightness of your screen unless you are outside to use the ips+. You can also set your turn off screen to one or two minutes before it goes to sleep. With all of that can give more battery back. You will be happy with Crmi X with your choice of kernel..

I wanted to thank both of you for all the help that you have provided. This was great advice and Cromi-X works amazingly. While I was drawn to CM by its features, trying out the speed of Crom definitely was a high point for me. The difference from the stock (even stock rooted with apps pulled) and Crom is night and day.

I think when the Cromi X 5.0 RC1, you should give it a shot. I think that it will be even better than the previous versions..

My opinion why you shouldnt flash your Galaxy device

To start this thread off, I will start by saying ying I am not bashing the developers in any type of way, just giving people my perspective and opinion.

Let me start by introducing myself. I'm not new to this forums, ask many questions and do lots of research and from my research here is my conclusion.
People normally say they want a custom, stock feel of an android and that's why they flash rooms. If you want a pure droid feel get a Nexus device simple as that. Why flash a rom that takes away originality from the device? Things like S Voice, Samsung Watchon, multi window mode, WiFi calling and etc are very useful in everyday life. It's also what makes the phone better than an iPhone in opinion, the only advantage I see with roms are slight speed advantages and honestly, it isn't by much. I feel like roms are only better for games but if you're rooted, you can over clock your phone when you're playing games and problem solved.
I didn't go too much into detail, just stated a few reasons. Feel free to drop your opinions though, I'd like to hear why some of you think custom roms are better.

i rooted my s3 for the first time a few weeks ago, and the main reason was because i wanted the new 4.4 and heard that it wasn't going to come out for a LONG time through an official update. i was leaning towards buying the nexus 5 but when i found out i could flash a custom rom i tried it right away. i'm extremely happy with my decision because the new rom has been stable and makes the phone brand new again. like you mentioned, its much snappier without all the extra samsung extras.

Actually, you can. I've overclocked my phone lol.

It's not just for better performance but in custom ROM everything is better, such as battery life, it's the most important thing after performance.
You can also take the full control of the device after root and install a custom ROM. Games also is very important point for huge number of android user, because the stoke (original) android system cannot run games as smooth as custom ROMs.
Another reason is the lag, lag is a big problem in any android environment and up to now there is no solution for that, however, custom ROMs reduce the lag and make a better feeling for the user.

Not in all cases a ROM makes for better performance, and in some cases it actually makes it worse if the ROM is not properly configured. But a ROM can give the device a plain android version without the bloat software from the device manufacturer, thereby increasing performance and stability. In most cases I don't think it increases performance over plain android other then giving access to overclocking and scheduling options

[Q] Phone is Lagging and Overheating Constantly - Want to Install Custom Rom - Which?

Hi there,
I am sort of new to rooting and have never installed a custom android operating system or ROM yet. I would like to put on something with Android 5.0 if possible, but if none are out yet, which is the best ROM to put on my LG G3, and a tutorial to do it?
I want to use all of the eatures of the phon still as well.
Are there lollipop ROMS out yet for this phone, and if not should I wait for it?

rIGHT now im using Cloudy Rom V1.1 , the first week super fast , now im getting a little lag in keyboard, the battery its better performace than stock, i will try another to compare , i dont like the F**** Lag.

I too am using Cloudy and find that the top half of the phone doesn't heat up as much. There's an eco mode you can turn on as well. Not sure it that's what's going the trick, but I've kept it on because the battery life is great now.
As for the lag, have you tried flashing Pure Performance X? It's made all the ROMs I've tried snappier (including Cloudy).

I'm using Viper for my third day now. The first day the battery drained really fast as google processes was raelly active, but the last two days ive gotten over 4 hours of screen on time easily and it's definitely been an improvement over stock for me. I havent played any games but phone did not get hot watching youtube vids.
I am not familiary with pure performance X, looks interesting though.

Hello everyone I have just joined this forum about two days ago. I own a oneplus one which i found to be one of the finest smartphones until CM12 came along. It seems to me that CM12 ruined battery life of the oneplus. With CM11 battery life was much better, even charging time was not more that 2hrs max. Now I have read the forums that many oneplus owners experienced the same issues.
Now the thing is that I do not have any experience in how to root my my phone or install kernels and other stuff. Is there anything that would help my phone to have a similar battery life of CM11?

I take it you haven't unlocked your boot loader yet?
Unfortunately 5.0+ seems to be a bit poorer in the battery dept for most people. Most are hoping 5.1.1 helps the battery life, if not we'll have to hope for android M whenever that arrives. If you had an unlocked b/loader and custom recovery you could tryout some custom roms. Or even flash a 4.4.4/kitkat rom as many (including myself) have done. I had installed multirom and have been running COS12 as the main rom and CM11S on the secondary. The battery life was/is so much better, I was hitting 5-6hrs screen on time over 2days from a full charge, with lollipop I was hitting 4-5hrs screen on time over 1-1.5 days at a stretch., the standby drain is also a lot more.
If you havent already done so you could try checking privacy guard and denying wake up and keep awake permissions to google play services or anything else that seems to be active a lot in the background that you think shouldnt.

No I never unlocked anything. the phone is just unrooted. What I only is just change themes, which seems also to be buggy. So is it possible to revert back to CM11s? Are COS12 and CM12 the same or different please?

It isnt possible without unlocking your bootloader, see the below guide if you want to look at that option. It seems a lot of hassle but once its unlocked, thats it, it wont lock again unless you specifically go through running a command to do so. As an added advantage you can install a custom recovery which will allow you to make a full nandroid backup, which you can keep on your device or copy over to your PC. You can use this if you ever run into any problems or if you want to try out some other roms, you have the option to go fully restore your last setup.
I dont think I've had any issues with themes, is it one in particular or all, what happens?
I believe we are referring to the same thing, COS12 (Cyanogen OS 12) is what the oneplus one runs out of the box (stock Cyanogen OS). CM12 which is what it also gets called can also mean the CM12/12.1 nightlies, which can be flashed like a custom ROM and are considered the most up to date (on the bleeding edge if you like).

A good reason for Miui

Many of you probably have already noticed that this phone overheats when playing some heavy 3d game... Even with some benchmarking...
And due to that you have probably experienced some nice lag while the phone is overheated...
Well, I have experienced that... In real racing for example... And after having tried all the roms available and have only used miui when I bought it... I now got back to it.
And guess what... Besides the good look, the unbeattable camera app... I now realized that in miui, my phone does not get half the heat it got with cm, pac or lately with broken rom... Why does it happen I dont know... But the truth is miui is very fluid, the phone does not overheat anymore and I play real racing without any lag...
You should all try it...
Miui dev rom in my case.

I'm using brokenOs with a modded thermal conf (got it from here on XDA forums) + kernel configs (used some configs discussed in the CM threads of the TS forums, applied using EX Kernel manager, but could be using the embedded kernel auditor) and I'm getting a much cooler phone and much better battery life than I ever did with MIUI. Not to mention a completely lag free experience like I was never able to get with any miui (eu, smiui, even chinese dev rom).
The camera app is probably the only thing the original miui has that I still think as a better software piece than any other on the playstore (althoug, you should try cameraMX. It's brutally good).
I used MIUI for a couple of months and initially gave it the benefit of the doubt. But no, I won't go back to it again now that I've tried others.
