Hi Everyone,
OK, I am completely new to using tablets and android (and XDA! ) but I recently bought an Android tablet and although I put AV s/w on it I seem to have caught a bug. The problem is that, apparently, my settings app is now malware and it seems the only option to resolve it is to uninstall my settings application. Understandably I don;t want to forge ahead and do this because then I cannot manage my device. Anyone got any suggestions or can point me somewhere that could help? I have trawled the internet for an answer but haven't found anywhere reporting the same thing, so far. I am flummoxed and getting very frustrated. Also, any recommendations for malware prevention apps? Ta.
Thanks for taking time to read this. Sorry if it's in the wrong place!
You do know you should provide more details like which phone, which firmware, what antivirus app, etc.
But the simplest answer you would get is to stop using antivirus apps. Because most of them are hoaxes or give false results. There is nothing wrong with your settings app. I suggest you uninstall the AV app first.

It's not a phone, it's just a no-mark tablet (Tabtronics, if that makes any difference).
Seeing as the last several days (maybe a week now) it has had serious performance issues -- crashing, rebooting itself without my initiating it, not turning on for long periods, notification messeges telling me apps don't work when I have never tried to use them -- I'd say this is not a false result. And the AV (Avast) is the same brand I've been using on my desktop for years and has always been fiine, and I've had no problems with it until the last week.
Seems odd that the assumption here is that there isn't a problem, when there are a shed load of articles online stating how vulnerable Android is to malware. Unfortunately I can't find any that tell you where to go/ what to do in order to get rid of the bug. :crying:
Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Here's a good discussion that might interest you:

As for the issues you have, I would attribute it to either a rogue app or low memory. Try uninstalling any apps you recently installed. Also, try clearing app caches, freeing memory etc. See if that helps.
Hi all,
First time post, been enjoying all the advice on how to root and all that jazz.
As the title says it; I'm having problems downloading any theme from the app store. Any theme I choose and hit "Download" on it just brings up a window for 1/2 a second that I believe says "Downloading" but never actually does anything. Another weird thing, the other 2 themes that are kind of defaulted for options that you can download both work. I'm not sure if this is a silly question, however I can't seem to figure it out as no one else seems to have this issue.
Random pieces of information:
1. Yes, my phone is rooted, however this issue was still around before I did so.
2. I have the AT&T variant Galaxy S6.
3. I've checked to see if there's any apparent apps I disabled that may cause it but the only app that seems like it may be related is "Theme Store", and that of course isn't disabled.
Thank you!
Did you disable the Samsung Account? It doesn't work without the Samsung Account apk.

Double checked, it is not disabled.
Thanks for the idea though!
Create a new Samsung account.
I had this exact same problem and was able to fix by creating a new account. My old account was one I had created when the galaxy nexus was released.

Well, I think I figured out how to do it.
I made another account and registered my device on that Samsung account while un-activating it on my old one. However, I can't add the account on my phone, whenever I go to accounts on the settings page and choose Samsung account it does nothing, absolutely nothing. It just goes back a menu where it shows my account without allowing to input any information.

Did you ever figure out how to fix this? I wanted to download a camera mode, but realize nothing would happen when I tried to install. I went back and enabled all of my disabled apps in Titanium Backup. But unfortunately I still cannot add a Samsung account. Same thing happens when I choose Samsung from the account types, nothing happens.
I've got a girl that I work with that is having the exact same issue. She has the 128gb Verizon model and essentially nothing happens when you try to install a theme. Same thing happens with the Samsung account as well, as soon as you go into add the account and press Samsung account, it just bumps you right back out to the accounts screen. I've tried clearing data for Samsung Account, Galaxy Apps, Theme Manager, etc. Not quite sure what the issue is.
You're not alone
I'm having the same issue after attempting to install new camera modes via galaxy apps store.
support advised me to disable Samsung account and clear the cache... now i can't add it back despite it being enabled.. its just an endless loop .. add account - chooses Samsung account - flips back t previous screen

Sorry for not posting any updates.
Well, this isn't probably what you want to hear, but I fixed it by doing a Factory Data Rest. I don't know if everyone else's issues are exactly what I was experiencing, but I noticed when I did this reset and had to link a Samsung Account upon first power up for the phone. I'll be honest, I don't remember doing this the first time I got the phone (This is my first Samsung Account so I wasn't aware you had to do this). Then, of course, I checked this issue and it was fixed. I know this isn't really figuring out how to fix the issue, but it worked for me.
Good luck guys!
same thing bro...

I wasted hours on multiple days speaking to every venue availing for support and none were even aware it was possible and all claimed a factory reset. On the flip side verizon offered offered a refurbished replacement, but unless this continues I'd opt for the reset which fixed my account and now it runs like a dream... a super fast octabrain dream
I was facing the same problem.
Reading through this thread I've figured out what was wrong.
I have an old Samsung Account and this account was blocked on Samsung due to inactivity and new T&Cs to agree.
I've accessed the Samsung site (https://account.samsung.com) and reactivated my account.
After that, I became able to download the themes from Themes Store.

Do a factory reset get the theme then root if it still dont work then call samsung.
Sent from my SM-N910V using XDA Free mobile app
I have a same problem. My phone not rooted. I have package disabler. I enabled all disabled packages, rebooted phone, deleted dalvik, but no succes. I can't create samsung account in phone settings >accounts and theme store do not work. I do not want factory reset, because after needs a lot of time to configure phone.
Hey people,
I have a weird problem on my SM-G920F: my Phone app doesn't have the "frequently contacted" section on the "Favorites" screen. I remember having the option since I got the phone, but I can't say when it exactly had disappeared. I am very fond of this option, and I've seen people on various forums talking about the same problem, but nobody found any real solutions (they only got it working sporadically and randomly).
Has anyone seen this problem before, or I missed an update to phone app that removed the frequently contacted list altogether? Is there a way to solve this without erasing everything?
I am running the latest stock rom (6.0.1) w/out root. I have my knox tripped (tried rooting before, failed but tripped knox, can't afford to try root now because of disk encryption since all the root options I've found don't work well with encrypted data).
EDIT: I contacted Samsung support and got a reply that in Android 6.0.1 they had removed this option. So there it is, if anyone else is looking for this.
It's the same on my S6.
You can see frequently contacts under the tab log

Well, that's the log. But there is no dedicated section with frequently contacted people. And it just disappeared.
Nobody yet confirmed that this is a feature (actually absence of), so naturally I treat this as a bug/glitch. Especially because there are people that have this section come and go randomly.
I am also adding a screenshot showing how it used to look like (and how it's supposed to be).
I wrote an email to the official Samsung support in my country, and got a reply that this option was removed starting from 6.0.1. So that's it - they are idiots that randomly remove working and useful features.
Will update original post with this info, and this is ok to close/lock.
Here's a new one experts I went to the Support tab under settings and first thing I see is an Application problem which says "Phone services has reported problems. Would you like to resolve them? two choices are given Dismiss or Show. When I hit Show it takes me to the Phone APP with no further instructions beside Force Stop. Between this and my Not being able to MMS I'm having a bad day with this Phone.
I replied to your MMS issue in that thread.
As for the other problems...it could be related to an unhappy third party app you installed yourself. The only way to determine this is to run the phone in safe mode to see if the problem remains...if it goes away then you know it is a third party app and you will have to uninstall them one-by-one until you figure out which one is causing the problem.
If there are no third party apps causing the problem then it would be best to do a software repair using the Xperia Companion from your PC. This will completely reset the phone requiring you to set it up from scratch. Sorry...but this will also install a fresh copy of the software which is better than doing a basic factory reset from the phone itself.
Hey jaseman can you give me step by step instructions on first getting into safe mode and next doing the pc companion on my computer. I'm almost looking forward to resetting just to see if I can clear this issue and the messaging issue. Thanks for your quick response.
Instead of spelling all out ...again....here is the forum you need to get answers to all your questions.

So far, I can't seem to find anyone else having this exact issue. Starting yesterday, I was not able to answer or make a phone call. The dropdown "incoming call" notification came, but I couldn't tap answer or reject. The button would light up like it was registering my touch, but nothing would happen. I went to my contacts to return the call and nothing happened when I tapped call. I tried manually dialing the number, same thing. I tried other contacts, all the same thing. I restarted the phone and the problem went away, for a little while, then came back ( should note that if I am in my car and on bluetooth, I can answer a call using the car's answer function, but I can't make calls). A few times, the phone would make the call, but maybe a minute to two minutes later, like the Android phone app was moving in super slow motion. Things I have tried: clearing cache/data from phone app, uninstalling all updates from phone app. Nothing seemed to help other than rebooting, but that only works for a little while. I have not yet done a factory reset.
I am on Android 8.1 on T-Mobile.
I run a business and can't be without my phone! This is very frustrating. Google support wasn't much help.
Thanks!
Lou
It's a defective phone by manufacture, it's a crack in the audio codec on the motherboard. Contact Google or the retailer you bought your phone from if you are still under warranty or even if it's finished you should get a replacement from Google anyway.
Thank you. The Google support person I spoke with yesterday didn't mention anything about this. I'll have to reach out to them to see if they will issue a replacement as it's out of warranty. Is this the same issue that the class action suit is about?

Exactly that is the same issue, mine was under warranty but as I am out of Canada, they told me they will replace it only if I bring it back to Canada, unfortunately I am still outside and the warranty finished, I tried to fix the phone at a local shop and they damaged the phone totally trying to fix it, I just bought another one after, but this time I made sure the device was manufactured after 2016, mine is March 2017 and it doesn't have the mic issue.

Looking at the online info for the cracked audio are you sure it's the same issue I'm experiencing. It's not that I can't hear anyone or people can't hear me it's that my phone will not even attempt to make a call or answer a call. It just won't respond to me pushing the "answer" or "dial" button. Also, I haven't been able to replicate this issue in safe mode. Maybe something else at work??

Try to factory reset it from the settings, maybe it will work and it turns out to be some issue/app that is making your phone to act like that, just back up everything on your phone as the factory reset deletes everything on the phone. If it didn't work out then you should replace your phone.

Thanks! I was hoping to avoid as it's super annoying, but that's my last option.
I'm glad I've found this thread - I have the exact same issue. Tmobile and a pixel (1) that this just started happening with.
If i reboot the phone I can dial out, but after that it won't dial anymore. If I do attempt to dial, it seems to dial like the OP says, a few minutes later.
I'm able to answer the phone from the lock screen (by swiping up) but the drop down with answer and decline don't work when the screen is unlocked.
I've tried removing updates, clearing cache and defaults on the phone app, no luck. A reboot is the only fix, but it seems to last only for 1 call.
I havent dropped the phone or anything. @louballs, please report your findings after a reset, I'll keep playing with my phone too, maybe we can figure this out.

Well, I'm glad I'm not alone. Is it possible it's a network thing with Tmobile? I'm not saavy enough to say it's possible or not, but maybe the other members can tell or help troubleshoot. It can't be coincidence we both have the exact same problem.
Same problem with a Pixel 1 and Verizon
Having the same problem. When I get a call I get a drop down with the caller and answer or decline button. Neither one works and I have to just let it ring out. I get a missed call notification but no voicemail notification. I have deleted truecaller app and rebooted but no change.

I've found that if it's ringing, you can press the power button and it will take you to the "swipe up to answer" blue screen. That works for me.
Doesn't solve the problem any of us are having, but at least you can answer calls when they come in.
@Switchkey are you on Tmobile too?

Verizon
I have a Pixel XL 1st edition and I just started having this problem yesterday. The drop down menu won't work to answer calls and if I try to call back it won't go through until a minute after I try to connect the call. I'm on the Verizon network so I doubt it is a carrier issue. My best guess is that it has something to do with the most recent update. I really hope this gets resolved. It's the first real issue I've had with this phone.
The latest trick
Tried calling my wife from the car while driving using Google Assistant. Three times it said it understood I wanted to call my wife's mobile but it did nothing. 20 minutes later while I am driving I hear "Hello?" 20 minute delay on voice dialing a number. Luckily she said hello. If it had been someone else they might have just listened to me go about my day. This all started in the last few days. Prior to that the Pixel 1 phone has been great.
Same problem here. TMobile pixel 1. A reboot fixes temporarily. Started in the past week.
Update:
So from the beginning, I have NOT been able to replicate this problem in safe mode. I can make/answer calls with no issues whatsoever. So on Sunday night I spent some time uninstalling almost all of my apps and the issue seemed to go away. I went back in and reinstalled them and my phone was fine up until this morning. So because it was working for a couple days and works in safe mode. Is it possible that it is some sort of app conflict? I don't want to spend countless hours on this, but I really don't want to buy a new phone. Google will NOT exchange for me and I still owe $200 for this damn phone as I did the installment plan! This is very frustrating. Can anyone having this issue consistently try it in safe mode and report back to see if they can replicate it? In the mean time, I'm just going to run my phone in safe mode so I can answer calls at work.
Hey guys, my dad has been having the same issue on his Pixel. I quickly scrolled through the most recent posts on /r/GooglePixel and found this post. The comment mentioning disabling the phone permission for all other apps other than your default phone app seems to be working for my dad. So, I guess that's a workaround until Google fixes it (better than staying in Safe Mode, at least).

Interesting find! That might explain why after uninstalling a bunch of apps it started working again, for a while. Perhaps one of the apps is causing some conflict? I've just done a clean install again after uninstalling a bunch of apps I don't use anymore. If it comes back, I'll check the permissions and report back!
