[Q] WiFi stops working after a few minutes - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey I've got a stock OnePlus One and I've been having a problem with the wifi since day one (i think).
It connects initially and works for a few minutes. Sometimes after 5-10 minutes, sometimes after 30 minutes it just stops. I have to disconnect from WiFi and connect again to make it work again.
This problem is very frustrating - any help is appreciated!
Thank you!

This is a known bug that has yet to be resolved since 38R.
Uncheck wifi optimization in the wifi settings. some have reported that works

Thanks!
I've tried that but the problem is still there. Any other suggestions? Would a factory reset work?

uneek14,
There are tons of people out their with this issue and there have been more fixes than I can count. Now not all of them work for everyone. Personally for me the only fix was to swap out my router/modem combo from my ISP. You can check here.... https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/BACON-118 as there is an ongoing discussion on it. Maybe some other people's solutions will work for you
Hope this helps and you can sort it out

Captivate WiFi issue?

My captivate has a problem. It'll connect to WiFi no problem. Unfortunatly, after a while (could be anywhere from long 30 seconds to a few minutes) the WiFi stops sending data. I have to disable/reenable wifi to get it to work again. It still says connected to network, it just won't receive data.
Anyone know of this happening, have a fix, or maybe what I should look for that might be causing this issue?
I disabled recently installed running apps, no help.
I did try a speedfix last night, and it was unsuccessful, and I uninstalled it. Didn't test enough after that to know for sure if it was the issue, but I don't think so.
It was like, I was going through google reader, started a youtube vid, paused it, restarted it, and it wasn't loading. Just wouldn't load. That's when I think the problem started, and I haven't installed anything since then, that i haven't disabled/uninstalled.
Have you tried flashing the stock OS. Maybe this will help. My wifi has been solid so far but i will see if i get a problem like yours. Try reflashing. If it doesn't work post back.

I have the exact same issue on enterprise class cisco wifi APs. The only difference is the symptom is immediate, and not after an interval of time.

I'm thinking of this, but I don't know...
I have my music on my computer, I have my .apk's in a folder and my market synced with appbrain. Anything else I need to do? Will appbrain reset, and make me go find and reinstall everything?
What about the apps that I paid for, what happens to them?
Would be my first flash, and I'm thinking about flashing one of those I9000 roms, but that would be a last ditch effort. I really hope to avoid this.

It's an AT&T U-verse router, and only started a few hours ago, as near as I can tell.
I experience the same phenomenon of dropped wifi, and it occurs at any AP, but I have an interesting twist.
One time out of twenty when I start wifi, the 3g icon doesn't go away, but stays up on the status line with my wifi icon. On those rare occasions, my wifi stays solid for days. Unfortunately, it's random and rare.
same issue
My Wifi stops sending data and the 3G still shows. Sometimes restarting the router helps and sometimes nothing helps.
For anyone that might find this later, turns out (after two rom flashes) it was the router. I found this out when connecting my laptop to it. Surprised the captivate didn't admit it lost connection though.
I wish that were the case for me. My Captivate stays connected, but stops receiving at many different APs--Home, Starbucks, airport. I need a solution or a Scotch.

I had this exact problem, I tried a factory reset and it was still broken. I exchanged my phone and now it works perfectly holding a signal (except for enterprise 802.1x ap's which are known to be broken). (Also if you run dd-wrt check your logs for "deauthenticated due to local deauth", there is a problem with the wpa/wpa2 modules in either android or dd-wrt that they are not compatible with each other).
I actually found this searching for a solution to my own issue with WiFi. I actually fixed it while I was reading this. Unfortunately I have AT&T DSL with 2wire Modem. I went into the setting and setup MAC filtering and assigned it it's own IP. It has worked flawlessly for the past hour. I know this probably will not help when at other locations but at least at home I have a good connection.

Same router type as mine that lost it originally. Interesting, wonder if there is a connection? Or random coincidence.
I'm having a wifi issue as well, but not to the extent others have.
I connect fine, but it appears as though my data download speed is capped at <2mbps for both wifi and 3g?
My wife's iPhone is getting download speeds of over 10mbps on the same wifi network and >3mbps over 3g.
Is it worth flashing back to stock? or is this a known issue?
I'm running stock JH3 with SRE 1.2.1a with lagfix
I have this same issue and it's really random. Running JH2, sometimes it works on wifi, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes disabling\re-enabling wifi fixes it, but rebooting the phone always fixes it. Really frustrating...

3.2 wifi disconnection..?

Anyone else having wifi problems after updating? I didn;t have problems before, but it seems that after 3.2, my wifi stops every couple of minutes or something like that. I don't know if it's my own wirelss's problem, so when I get back on campus, I'll attempt downloading and seeing if it gets interrupted again.
Yep I'm having the same problem. Keeps kicking me out of my PocketCloud remote. Thought it might just be me. I've noticed the Wifi symbol stays grey a lot when it used to stay blue. It's not my network, the only change was the update to 3.2.
Yeah... it's grey and it keeps disconnecting me while I try to download an episode..
(stock 3.2)

I got kicked out of my home Wifi several times last night after updating to 3.2. I didn't have this issue on 3.1. What a total disappointment...
WiFi with 8.4.4.11
Did you install 8.4.4.11 before installing 3.2?
My tablet came back from RMA with firmware .11 installed, but before 3.2 came out. I noticed similar behavior with the WiFi. In my case it never found any networks (I'm guess some wire got messed up when they fixed the power button issue). However, when on the WiFi page in settings normally it says "scanning" under WiFi when looking for a network. On mine it would say "scanning" for a second and then it would go away, then it would say "scanning" again, then disappear, etc. Maybe there is an issue with the WiFi driver?
I'm hopeing the tablet will be back next week (it was in repair status yesterday). The first time I sent it in it came back with a pretty good description of what they did to fix it (its just a bummer they broke it at the same time).

What are you Wifi setting, especially the disconnect settings? It could be that the update changed the settings.
Hmm, I checked it because I saw another thread saying something similar, but it was still marked as "disconnect when screen is closed." I also tried unchecking it and rechecking it, then turning wifi on and back off to see if it would fix it. (It didn't!)
Well, I'm hoping it will be fixed by Asus sometime soon, but it's not too big a problem at the moment since I don't HAVE to watch those episodes. :/
Mine is set to never disconnect. Even tried changing to a different setting and back.
Confirmed. Had this happen since the .11 update.
I may try a wipe and restore. Considering going ahead and rooting if it comes down to swiping. Anyone tried either?
yeah I might as well root if i have to reset everything...
Yes, same problem...disconnecting for about ten seconds every two minutes or so. Makes listening to radio quite impossible...
Have done resets and changing wi-fi channel to 9, doesn't help.
I've noticed this, but it hasn't happened very frequently. For me, it seems to happen mostly during when I had the screen off (which I had setup to disconnect whenever the screen is off). I recently just changed it to never disconnect, and I haven't seen it happen in the past 10 minutes or so, but that could just be me.
I do agree though, it seems as if there is some kind of bug here as well.
I had a similar problem before 3.2 ...i fixed it the day before the update. I forced my router to not be bonded to a channel and set it to auto.
Youtube constant buffering was fixed.. now it downloads the videos quickly and no buffing after the first time.
Also my apps like CNN that have alot of visual pictures in the main menu load up instantly and downloads are lighting quick. No interruptions, re-downloads or anything. Even when apps are updating..Games like Dungeon defenders that has alot of initial downloads pulls the data without stopping.
I suffered from disconnections before i set the router to Auto and choose a channel on its own.
No issue here.

That is exactly what mine is doing. Has anyone contacted Asus?
I think I have a fix. I tried the old assign it a static IP on the TF itself. Icon stayed blue for over 5 mins without turing grey. I'll have to check my PocketCloud tomorrow and confirm the fix.
I've been having the same issue...... every few minutes it says no connection. It also seems like I have fewer bars on my wifi signal icon too.... hope a fix is found soon because it's frustrating.
Well, I tried it on campus, same thing, disconnects within a download of an episode.. (like 4-5 minutes??). Oh no! I'll never get to finish Triumph in the Skies..
It happens to me too. It is quite frustrating.
I have already tried to assign a static IP but with no success.

Nexus 5 Wifi Issue

So I've had my Nexus 5 for roughly around a month and I hadn't experienced any issues others have had with wifi not connecting until now. My N5 will show im connected to my home wifi with full bars, but going into quick settings shows it to be orange. Suggesting there's no data transfer, I cannot use any internet based apps with wifi. I've tried some suggestions, switching my router off then on, rebooting the phone, turning some settings off in the advanced panel in wifi settings. All have failed.
I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem and if anyone has a fix to it.

There was a thread around here somewhere that suggested turning off your mobile data helped fix this problem, I think it was in the N5 General forums.....here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2550690
Don't know if it'll help or not, just saw your thread and had just looked at the other one, figured I'd toss it out there.
Thanks for the reply, just tried that solution but still no luck.
I have a similar problem except that there are phases of wifi not working.
Sometimes I would have around 20-30 seconds of WiFi not working and there would be no data transfer.
Speeds are still fast when it is working however.
I played a little with only using mobile data and no wifi, and everything worked. (Small sample size however).
Seems like this is a WiFi only issue.
So somehow overnight the wifi has managed to fix itself, will report back if the problem returns.
The issue with the wifi returned unfortunately.

Don't know if you've tried this but change your WiFi frequency band in advanced setting to either "5 GHz only" or "2.4 GHz only," whatever your router uses. Might be worth a try.
Thanks for the help, but I've tried changing some settings in advanced wifi settings but it hasn't worked. Even what you recommended I've tried that before and it didn't work.
wifi issue
Also I have the same issue - Im connected to router by wi-fi, home and work and time by time (5x a day) wifi stops working. Wifi is enabled in settings, but there is no connection. Restart the cellphone helps, but after that, maybe an hour, it appears again.
Issue was in 4.4 and still appers in 4.4.1.
Yet did not found how to solve it.
I have the same issue on my gnex running shiny 4.4, but I also had the same issue on 4.3. Tried the wifi options, nothing worked. Unfortunately, no solution for this device that has to last one more week. The double swipe down and tapping wifi gets the connection back, but it is only a work around.
The N5 connects seamlessly to my home and work wifi. A few days ago, I flashed the hammerhead factory image, TWRP and the 4.4.1 update.

Hey,
I have the same problem with 4.4.2.(factory rom, no root or not unlocked). Sometimes the wifi not works and get orange. I must put airplane mode to fix it. Its annoying.
But as well happens to me:
When I go out from office or home (where I have wifi connections saved in phone) the phone automatically switch to data plan from carrier. But when I come back the phone stays with data and there is not automatic switch to wifi. Sometimes it help to put wifi off or always airplane mode on/off for a while.
I do not know if it is normal behave of android but I would like have automatic switch to wifi.
I tried to change wifi details (changing bands, etc.) but not helped.
Please help. Thank you.
Is custom ROM or kernel will fix it??
For some unknown reason, as soon as I updated my router's firmware, the problem disappeared.
Updated Android 6.0 solved the issue

So I had the unfortunate experience of having my wifi go down while on vacation and for 3 weeks I spent a good chunk of time wiping and reinstalling multiple versions from Cyanogen, Paranoid android and 4.4 - 5.1 to no avail. I just did another factory wipe today and installed the new Android 6.0
The Finger Pointing Game is OVER
Read through 30+ pages of other android users with similar experience and some people send their units back to LG and some even managed getting a new handset. There was never any hardware issues with my unit I just couldn't turn on the WiFi but after the install WiFi works? Guess next time you push a software update to our Phones CHECK YOUR SH*T google and Maybe DON'T Take 3 months to FIX your F*CK Up.
I have a similar issue. Since Lollipop my phone almost never automatically connects to my WiFi anymore. What's wrong?

[Q] Wi-Fi connectivity issues

Hey guys,
I'm having some issues with my Wi-Fi connectivity on my N5 and it's freaking me out! :crying:
When I'm trying to connect to my home network, the Wi-Fi icon is getting orange after some random time.
Some times it gets back to white, some times it's not.
I know its a known issue but nothing seems to fix it.
I tried everything - reboot my phone, reboot my router, reboot into safe mode, forget the network and connect again, toggle into airplane mode and back, change Wi-Fi settings to connect only to 2.4 GHz, avoid poor connections, update my router firmware.
NOTHING worked!
The only thing I haven't tried yet is factory reset but I read some people saying it didn't help them either.
Only turning Wi-Fi off and than on again makes it "white" again for some other random time.
I'm running stock everything on a rooted device with Android 4.4.4 build KTU84P.
My Wi-Fi is working great with other devices in the network including a Nexus 7 2012 and some laptops.
And it seems that my Nexus 5 is connecting fine to other Wi-Fi networks.
It worked fine in the past and I think it all went wrong when I replaced my Modem.
Any ideas what else can I try?
Do you think maybe the Lollipop update will fix this annoying issue?
Thanks!
Forgot to mention (I guess it is obvious) - I can't connect to any website or run any network connected app when I'm "orange" (I know it means I'm not connected to google services).
Tried also to change my Wi-Fi channel. still not working.
Doesn't anyone have an idea what is wrong here?
This is really frustrating ... :crying:
Well, I'm kind of talking to myself here, but in case someone else is facing this annoying issue, here is what fixed it for me eventually:
Configure a static IP to my phone in the router configurations ! :victory:
Before that, I also tried to disable Wi-Fi optimization in the phone Wi-Fi settings, buy it didn't seem to help.

Wifi connection troubles after update to 6.0

I'm not sure if this is a Nexus 5 problem or a 6.0 Marshmallow problem but the problem occurred after the update to 6.0 on both Nexus 5s for me and my wife.
There seems to be some bug with my phone while it is asleep (screen is off but phone is on). When it is in this mode, it will not stay connected to wifi. For example, when I enter an area that has wifi, my phone will not connect. It will only connect when I wake the phone. And this isn't just a matter of the phone taking a while to connect. It NEVER connects. Before the update, my phone used to make a connection with my home router before I even walked inside. Now, I can be inside for hours and the phone never connects, until I wake it up. As soon as I wake the phone, the phone makes the connection with no problem. After a few minutes of the phone being asleep, I will wake the phone and the wifi connection will be gone. Now that it is awake again, it connects again with no problem.
I have tried forgetting the network and creating a new one, I have tried different routers, I have tried wiping the cache partition. I haven't tried a full factory reset, and I'd prefer not to, but I guess I will if I have to.
Just thought I would check here first and see if anyone had other thoughts.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that is what I thought at first also. I meant to say in my original post that my wifi settings are set to "Always On" during sleep. I've tried toggling that between the settings but still have the trouble.
Sorry, my Nex 5 has not this issue on Android 6 build MRA58K.
Alessandro
Yup, have the same issue. When the phone goes to sleep, it seems to disconnects from the wifi and never connects after I wake the phone. When I go into the wifi settings, I see "WIFI Connection Failure". I have to reconnect manually. Like the OP, have it set to always on as well. I also know it's not a router issue because I've tried this on four different routers (two linksys, one Dlink, one TPLink) All same results.
Wonder if this is a phone issue?

Google upped this to a high priority Friday morning (Nov 6). The bad news is I think there a couple different WiFi symptoms being discussed here. Most of what is being discussed is the issue being discussed here (not reconnecting when the screen is off).
No idea when this will be fixed, so I build a Tasker profile to toggle WiFi every 15 minutes when not already connected to force a reconnect. I’ve observed it getting disconnected on its own overnight. This should avoid unnecessarily using cellular data.
I’m perpetually waiting for the next release of Android to fix annoying bugs.

Thanks for the update Gary. The comment #6 describes my situation exactly. In doing some troubleshooting of my own, I find the disconnection trouble to happen less while on a 5Ghz network vs 2.5. I still have the trouble of it not connecting initially when I come into range, but I find that it is able to hold the connection while asleep.
I am also experiencing this on my Nexus 5 and also found and starred the thread above.
I just listened to 20min of streaming with Spotify to then realize that it had gone into Doze and used the mobile data!
This is more than annoying...
Maybe by disabling Doze for some specific connectivity-related system app? Anyone tried that?
Yes, I moved virtually all of the services type of apps (the ones with the green generic Android icon) to the battery not optimized list. It didn't make any difference for me.
In some ways it seems like it might be a Doze problem, and in other ways it doesn't. Doze shouldn't be affecting anything when the phone is in my pocket and I walk in the house to my WiFi. It also shouldn't be affecting anything when the phone is being charged, which is when I see frequent WiFi disconnects.
It will be real disappointing if this isn't fixed with 6.0.1.
This is still an issue with 6.0.1. Nexus 5 (2013) 6.0.1 MMB29K updated through OTA ZIP pushed with ADB.
Things work properly for a while right after a reboot and then WiFi never connects until the screen is turned on.
Google Connectivity Services C.1.6.7 (2466695) update didn’t make a difference either.
Same problem as the thread starter. HTC A9 anroid 6.0. (newest available OS)
Same problem here with a Nexus 5 .
Please star the problem if you have it.

Has anyone tested with a non-stock kernel ?
I'm asking because the problem seems +/- resolved on CM13 (non caf).
No counting CM13, do you know of a more stable rom with the problem resolved?
Does anyone here have Wemo devices? I am reading that wemos, and possibly other devices that emit their own wireless network, may cause problems. I have several of these devices around the house, and wonder if that might be contributing. However, that only would solve the dropped connection bug I have, not the failing to connect while asleep but I have.
Hi mates, my Nexus 5 (android 6.0.1,M8974A-2.0.50.2.29) gets the same troubles with wifi connection but today I tried to put some apps in non optimized list of Doze and seems workig fine.
Thats my non optimized Doze list:
-Google Play Services
-System UI
Try it and let me know if it works properly.

Welp, that didn't work. Still have the error after not optimizing System UI in addition to Google Play Services.
I don't know if the issue is resolved, but at least for me, it never worked fine so many days after testing some new workaround.
So, this was what I did in my Nexus 5 (latest build, MOB30H).
Uninstall or deactivate Google Connectivity Services, reset your network settings (you will lose your Wifi networks and BT pairings), reboot.
My Nexus 5 has been connecting to the wifi networks even with the screen off for the last 6 days.

Miguun, has the error returned, or still fixed? I just got the May update, so fingers crossed that fixes it. Otherwise, I guess I'll try your fix. I don't look forward to entering the wifi network information again.
Yup, it is still working !!
