Best free anti virus app ? - Security Discussion

What are you using for this tegra machine ?
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk 4

There is no best, it's matter of taste what you prefer. Simply gui, smart engine or additional tools like anti-theat.
There are several tests that shows more or less that almost all av's are on the same level besides some gimmick features.
If you like an AV only you can look at AVL Pro but if you need additional options you can use avast which also includes a firewall and more. But as I said it's matter of taste and different engines may work better or worst on different systems, so I highly recommened to test yourself, my mentioned apps are free to use. There are also several paid but try yourself and share you knowlage how they worked for you.
For a basic overview you can take a at look here: http://www.av-test.org

The best AV is you

I think all anti virus apps are pretty much useless for Android. You just have to be careful what you do.

They are not useless, they can help in some cases (same like windows) to reveal important info about app permissions, inform the user with security news feed, including features that are not avaible on stock roms like a firewall and and.

Why can't Android replace Desktop OSes?

Android x86 works fine on my notebook PC. And, I can do almost everything with it: Ranging from web surfing to programming.
But still, nobody cares about it. Why?
What's really the advantages of desktop OSes over Android? Why don't OEMs ship computers with Android as primary OS? Why don't people think Android when PC comes in mind?
I'll tell you why, Windows sells and people buy! Microsoft has the consumer market all tied up with the PC. Most consumers couldn't care less about programming, hacking, developing, etc... web surfing and Facebook and emailing? Yeah, that's what they want. Now, another question: why would people who purchase a PC want to pay additionally or inclusively to the price of a PC for Windows OS, when most distros of Linux are absolutely free? I'm running an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS/Win7 setup on my laptop. I'm getting closer and closer each day to wiping Win7 completely off, but have some reservations in doing so. Anyhow, my two cents worth...

Windows comes first for game developers. That is why I dual boot. if Linux got love from from game devs it would have a better chance at success. The other issue would be driver compatibility, although this has gotten a lot better.

I am talking about Android, not normal Linux. I think, Android does have nice games..
Well, when the time comes for a full fledged OS, Android is still lacking in apps for that. One step in the right direction will be to multiply the current variety of tablet apps.
Make more apps have tablet optimisation and then we can talk about desktop apps.

Your answer is also a point against android as a viable desktop, by that I mean a desktop should be able to do more than just "what most people do".
That and you can't just download and install hardware drivers for android so it renders a lot of peripherals only useable with pc mac or linux.
Android can be a desktop if you don't tax your pc with more demanding tasks such as audio or video editing. Once you want to do anything more specific than gaming or browsing android does not yet offer the ability to.
I think it is viable but because it is not designed to be anything more than a mobile operating system it would struggle to be a desktop replacement.

Initially, even Windows didn't have such high-end apps. After bringing Android to mainstream, those types of apps will appear on Android, for sure.

As soon as windows came out it was not long before the programs were available, android works differently to windows (for example in its use of user installable drivers) and is, unlike windows, not designed to be a desktop so the apps don't or perhaps cannot in some cases (such as adobe type video editing software) be made that will enable android to meet all pc desktop needs.

I agree..
Let me correct myself.
I actually don't think Android is as low performing as a skateboard.
At best, I think it's more like a scooter. It gets a job done if it's about taking you to point A to B. And, that's pretty much it at this point.
A car, on the other hand, can do many more things. It is far more versatile. It stands against the weather. It can carry all your family members. It is far more powerful...etc.
Remember old days of laptops? In those days, people with a laptop also had to have desktops although same OS was being used. It was because laptops weren't just powerful enough to suit higher end tasks. The situation is similar in that regard.
For you, Android and supporting hardware and apps might be good enough to replace desktop. However, it isn't so for majority of people and that's the point. A desktop OS needs ability to support all types of usage scenarios, not to mention hardware.
Can current Android do it? No.
Android isn't a desktop OS. Its built for touch and feels pretty limited when being controlled via mouse/kb. Ubuntu would be a better choice since its a decent well established desktop OS, especially when the Ubuntu on Android project is out allowing android apps to run on Ubuntu and vice versa. I'd love to see the popularity of Android help Ubuntu.

I was talking about majority of people (not myself). That's why Google launched Chrome OS.
According to surveys, most of people do those things with Desktop PCs which is possible with Android devices.
Android is more powerful than Chrome OS. If Chrome OS can go to commercial Laptops, why can't Android?

You do have point.
We can use mouse, but it feels pretty limited.
But, what if someone says, you'll become used to after using that continuously. You may not like dragging welcome screen of Windows 8 at this time, but you'll love it once its in your mainstream.

Surface RT + Samsung Galaxy S3 + Kies= Awesome!

If you have these devices its awesome. I like to download torrents on Android while I await a torrent app for our surface. Then I can connect Surface to S3 using Kies and having Surface tethered to S3 using hotspot allows me to stream or download all my content along with access all my phone info. Love it. So far love my Surface. Ordered it on 23rd here in Michigan and received it this morning. 32GB with black touch cover.

Kies is a x86 app . And not compatible with windows RT . Unless Samsung make the app on windows store and is compatible with RT.
He is not talking about the x86 app that is available for windows, instead using the Kies app on the device which broadcasts an IP address that you can connect to within IE.
I have a SGN and a Surface, I will try this tonight

R u saying its like internet tethering??
You have to either be tethered to your phone using the mobile hotspot or on the same Wi-Fi network. Then open the kies app on phone and hit start. it will then give you an IP address to type in your surface browser and boom!

You've obviously never used Windows RT. While it may not have as many apps as Android, yet, the UI is much faster and smoother. I am not sure about the Surface, but the Asus Vivo Tab RT is awesome & I have some pretty great Android devices and have enjoyed the Android experience very much. That said, my RT tab lasts 3 times longer than any Android device including the Nexus 7, has a great screen & is very responsive. I have not had to reset the device at all, not once, in more than two weeks & it holds it's charge for days on end.
Sure, it is missing some cool apps, but a lot of that is because we have all gotten used to apps from Android & iOS. With the full browser experience & integration of social networking into the native "People" app, many of the Apps you "NEED" for iOS & Android are unnecessary.
I can almost guarantee that when Windows tabs have been out as long as Android has been, it will be much more capable than Android was at the same elapsed time since release. Everyone said Android wouldn't make it, "it didn't have as many apps as iPhone" & look where it is. RT started out of the box way ahead of what Android did in terms of function & stability. Again, I am referencing the Asus Vivo, which has LED flash, NFC & GPS capability. The surface is nice, but after my Nexus 7 experience & with the additional features, I had to stick with Asus.
Without apps, I will say that at this point, Android in general is better for entertainment. But neither Android or iOS comes even close to the RT tabs for those of us that work on the road in conjunction with teams that include sales, support & engineering professionals. Full PowerPoint function that includes viewing notes while in presentation mode is priceless. Add that to the "mirror", "extend" & "individual" monitor choices that mirror a laptop & those are just two small features out of many that make it a clear winner for road warriors.
your sliding scale of timeframe comparisons won't work.
4 years starting at x date vs 4 years LATER starting at y date means anyone with a billion dollar software company can reproduce fedatures. see, apple - notifications, android - full office suites, microsoft rt - uhhhh something in 4 years.
I hear microsoft is announcing plan B already, incase surface tanks: office (for sale) for android and ios. problem is (again) its too little, too late. people already have office suites that work just fine , without subscriptions, without fees, without changes that make yesterdays word document incompatible.
Just wanted to put this out there.
Airdroid =\= Android.
Airdrops is an app that let's you transfer files wirelessly. Not an os.
I tried to do this with my sg3..i just get a blank white page on the surface.

The Ultimate Universal Remote for S4

Smart Remote for Galaxy S4, Current version 1.1.6
MOD EDIT - No Advertising Paid Apps
Im here to tell you about a Universal Remote designed for the S4 that uses the IR sensor that is AMAZING. It has nearly almost all codes for all sorts of things from AV systems, AUX, Blu Ray, Blu Ray Players, CD, Climate Control, DSLR, DTV Converter, DVD, DVD Player, DVD/VCR Combo, Game, IPOD (MP3 players), Laser Disc, Lightning Control, Media Manager, Multizone Systems, Projectors, Receivers, Set Top Box (cable, satellite, and assorted stuff), Soundbar, Subwoofer, Switcher, T HHD DVD Recorder-DVD, TV, TV/DVD Combo, TV/DVD/VCR Combo, TV/VCR, Video Processor, Microsystem, and can request stuff that's not there but theres A LOT of brands available now.
This program is $10 but its so worth it and its very accurate as well as responsive just as a normal remote. May take a few to set up correctly as I was lost with my cable box from my cable provider Metrocast, I have a Pace brand box from my cable company and I had to make sure selected the right one. It give you all sorts of buttons depending on the device you add. The best part is the smart remote system you can create your own buttons, i havn't really tested this part, but its awesome by the sounds of it.
I been playing with this for an hour and I'm seriously impressed with it. I highly recommend spending the $10 on this. Its easy to set up and grasp as long as you can find your brand easy.
I will add pictures later of the remote from like my Xbox and cable remote to show you the different button options i have with each.
(i posted this in the sprint variant section but adding it to the other)

App is your and you can make the price you prefer, but I bought a 1-2 $ apps without problems (60-70 times till now), 2-5 $ apps if I need it very much and it is perfectly written. I've never spent 10 $ for an app and I don't know if I'll change my consuetude.

Is note 10.1 still a good option?

I'm shopping for a new tablet and I'm considering the note 10.1. Best Buy currently has them for $350. That seems like a pretty good deal.
My question is, is this still a good option? Are there good, solid, stable ROM's out there?
Is there anything else I should know. It seems like this tab has the ability to be pretty good.

I really like my note. If you want the Spen then it is absolutely great. I take so many notes on it for school and it is extremely convenient to be able to multi task during lecture. Really i use this more than my laptop. I turn off wifi (sometimes the tablet) at night and with use at school (like 2 hours a day) for notes i can get a few days out of it sometimes a week, it depends on how distracted i get during a lecture and play games Anyway, I am really glad i got this tablet. If you dont think you will use the Spen then go for something else because it really is the biggest reason to get it. And IMO it is pointless to get this tablet to install CM10 or PAC on it, because the Spen doesnt work as well after that if it even does work. Message me if you have other questions, i will try to reply...
Thanks for the replies. I wen t ahead and bought it. But if anyone else want's to throw in their thoughts on what's good and what to avoid that would be appreciated.

There are many ROMs to choose.
ARHD (that I use) is close to stock ROM.
Boeffla kernel is enhanced kernel with OC feature.
Install Boeffla Config if you flash Boeffla kernel.
Flash Noozxoide if you want sound enhancement.
Boeffla kernel also features Boeffla Sound enhancement.
Choose a case wisely before buying one.
Strong magnetic field may "damage" wacom digitizer.
For apps....
I use 2 Office suites: Quickoffice by google & AndrOpen Office
Quickoffice is an Office suite for offline & cloud (an office suite that was bought by Google)
AndrOpen Office is a ported version of Open Office (a full office suite that was a default office suite in Linux)
Linux default Office Suite now mostly is Libre Office, a fork of Open Office.
For S-Note alternative I use LectureNotes & Write
LectureNotes is Bitmap based & Write is Vector based.
For navigating I use Waze.
Very usefull to avoid traffic jam & in some country it can show you the nearest & cheapest gas price too.
That's all for now.
Just ask if you have any questions

it's useful when you are using your device in night or dark room and everybody knows after while eyes crying and even headache can appears,

It's not nearly as sharp as a full HD or UHD/Retina display, but I've had zero issues wit it, and I do quite a bit of reading and stuff on it. I wouldn't worry about the screen unless you're really picky and willing to put more money into a nicer screen.

... didn't even know it was around... well, maybe I'm being unneedfully suspicious, but there's lots about this ( I watched the video ) that doesn't quite work...
... how Windows 8 is running on whatever chipset is in his tablet escapes me. My gut instinct is to say it's in some sort of virtualized container, but ...
... I noticed at the end of the video there was virtually no demonstration of how it performed. did the touch screen work? Was it laggy?
... anytime I'm just clicking away and letting software from who knows where just fly on to my device, well, I need to have my head examined.
It would be super cool if this was legit and produced a functional way to swap between OS's; I'm just not buying it for now based on what the site and video is showing.

Echo the opinions of others when I say I have absolutely no desire to ever own a windows tablet.
The website in question though just screams STAY AWAY to me. It's clean . . too clean . . there's no testimonials, no compatibility lists, and no support FAQs or forums of any kind to allow one to see a history of testing and interaction with users. For me, support is often a big deal and that should especially be true for a product such as this where you're potentially going to softbrick your device when you repartition it. While I'm sure there would be a way to get back to stock I'm not the least bit interested in finding out . .

I'm between Android and Mac/iOS myself. Wherever the art geared tech flows, I follow, but that's just me. I don't see the point of Windows tablets myself, but if factors changed, I'd jump only with the other options had nothing to offer me anymore.
Don't even need Office anymore. Just get Libreoffice, which got a heavy UI overhaul recently. I just found it as a curiosity. I still remember running a virtual machine of 2000 on the Note 10.1 , and it was slow as can be. I'm not sure how well virtual machines run on the Note Pro, but I doubt anything beyond XP would run well.
