I'm shopping for a new tablet and I'm considering the note 10.1. Best Buy currently has them for $350. That seems like a pretty good deal.
My question is, is this still a good option? Are there good, solid, stable ROM's out there?
Is there anything else I should know. It seems like this tab has the ability to be pretty good.
Thanks for any input you have.

You'll find no other device at the same level with Note 10.1 at that price range

I really like my note. If you want the Spen then it is absolutely great. I take so many notes on it for school and it is extremely convenient to be able to multi task during lecture. Really i use this more than my laptop. I turn off wifi (sometimes the tablet) at night and with use at school (like 2 hours a day) for notes i can get a few days out of it sometimes a week, it depends on how distracted i get during a lecture and play games Anyway, I am really glad i got this tablet. If you dont think you will use the Spen then go for something else because it really is the biggest reason to get it. And IMO it is pointless to get this tablet to install CM10 or PAC on it, because the Spen doesnt work as well after that if it even does work. Message me if you have other questions, i will try to reply...
Thanks for the replies. I wen t ahead and bought it. But if anyone else want's to throw in their thoughts on what's good and what to avoid that would be appreciated.

There are many ROMs to choose.
ARHD (that I use) is close to stock ROM.
Boeffla kernel is enhanced kernel with OC feature.
Install Boeffla Config if you flash Boeffla kernel.
Flash Noozxoide if you want sound enhancement.
Boeffla kernel also features Boeffla Sound enhancement.
Choose a case wisely before buying one.
Strong magnetic field may "damage" wacom digitizer.
For apps....
I use 2 Office suites: Quickoffice by google & AndrOpen Office
Quickoffice is an Office suite for offline & cloud (an office suite that was bought by Google)
AndrOpen Office is a ported version of Open Office (a full office suite that was a default office suite in Linux)
Linux default Office Suite now mostly is Libre Office, a fork of Open Office.
For S-Note alternative I use LectureNotes & Write
LectureNotes is Bitmap based & Write is Vector based.
For navigating I use Waze.
Very usefull to avoid traffic jam & in some country it can show you the nearest & cheapest gas price too.
That's all for now.
Just ask if you have any questions

And for some "play with my device" thing you can use AccuWeather for weather forecast, Android Tuner for some infos and tunning your device,
Moon+ reader for reading an e-book and e-magazines and best app I ever seen is Lux Dash for automaticaly brigtness and so called Night filter -
it's useful when you are using your device in night or dark room and everybody knows after while eyes crying and even headache can appears,
so this app according your location recognize if in your country is NIGHT or DAY and night filter is for your eyes safety.
More here: Lux Dash Lite
Have great time with this great "pet" :highfive:
I just got one last night and its pretty sweet. Walmart had them for $275.00 as a heads up. I have a note 3 and a nexus 7 but so far im really liking the large screen and spen use.

It's not nearly as sharp as a full HD or UHD/Retina display, but I've had zero issues wit it, and I do quite a bit of reading and stuff on it. I wouldn't worry about the screen unless you're really picky and willing to put more money into a nicer screen.

So, I have recently came across Splashtop, which claims to allow you to access your desktop PC remotely via an Android device. My questions is, however, how well does it actually work - especially on the Galaxy Note? Could I say, finish some homework on Microsoft Office utilising this or even stream games such as Fallout and Terraria?

Splashtop works pretty great. Basically you are looking at the image of your desktop. You can control the computer remotely. I have used it to check home spycam when I was away. It functions as if you were there sitting in front of the computer. It is difficult to do much on the Note however. You need a larger screen to really get things done. It's good to watch movies playing on the pc. I don't think Fallout or any other game would function all that great though. Worth a try.

I own the Note and splashtop and could honestly say that most everything would be a pain. If you're away from your computer (eg: using 3G) then it's damn near useless. If you're around the house and have wifi, it's pretty fast. If away and you have wifi, it's pretty slow but usable if you're just trying to transfer a few files and whatnot... Doing Office homework might not be too bad, but you could probably do better with QuickOffice HD or OfficeSuite (as long as you could just go home and touch it up later).
As far as the Terraria Statement, I posted this back on the Transformer Prime forum, but this might help you out too:
How to install and play Terraria on Android
I bought it during the promotion last time.
Works pretty well over wifi.
For 3G and above, really depends on your reception. Some places work with negligible performance impact.
Games wise, this may be dependent on your GPU and OS version. You have to see their support psge for more info. There is a version made for games though it is tablet only.

There's always 2X Remote Desktop too. Free, uses RDP and resizes to the res of your device. Its free and stable for me.
I wouldn't try any video over it (RDP is crap for that) but for normal remote control its great. I've set up a VPN to my home and connected over 3G with reasonable performance.
Oh, and my experience of Splashtop has been really hit and miss. Mainly miss, and mainly because it only works sometimes if you have Windows firewall or RDP connections enabled.

Got it from Google Play. It is free - which is smart to given that all our devices are Wifi Direct ready and the miracast is about to take off.
The desktop is mapped to pixel perfection. I am used to small screens. It is the first remote solution where the stylus hover works, that is steers the mouse, unfortunately I cannot drag. The mouse sensitivity in halflife was over the top. Performance unfortunately did suffer from micro-lags / stutter. Smooth mode hardly helped. Bandwidth is between 1Mbps to 4Mbps. Setup is as painless as it gets - see wikipedia for an explanation.
And yes a tegra helps.
If it weren't for the dragging-input issue I would have been very impressed.
U can also try Jump desktop, which is a very similar app. Mouse hover with S-pen works too, and GUI is reasonably fast
Overall, it all depends on your connection speed, and the adaptability of your desktop content to a much smaller screen, regardless of the closeness in resolution. I find it very useful to check and use some non-critical programs on the way to work. Also, it gets my office PC up and running, so that I can start working right away
I use LogMeIn Pro it costs but there are plenty of free torrents out there.
You can do everything from your note screen

Remote desktop solutions are dime a dozen. There are literally hundreds of them out there now.
Teamviewer stands out for its freeness, ease of use and portability as well as great device support. Unfortunately it does not adapt well to the Wacom Pen's features on the Note (yet). It's performance with low bandwidth is almost unrivalled. A 1h session nets you around 40MB total
Splashtop stands out for promoting itself as the speediest remote solution in the market. It was also very a smart move to hook up with Nvidia. It basically utilizes the high CPU performance on one side and the great encoding capabilities on the mobile devices (which were even ahead of Intel's Atom lineup at that time). Splashtop carves into the miracast, Wireless desktop branch.
Let's see when and how the miracast technology takes off and proves itself hassle-free.
I am foremost interested now in hooking up my Android to my PC Screen at high framerates....
Good day guys!
I've always used a laptop as my main PC, mainly because I can bring it to university, now I would like to build a desktop and would like to use a tablet to connect remotely to my new desktop and type any notes of documents directly on my PC.
As I would be taking notes/writing documents, it would be necessary to have a keyboard dock, I'm not too sure how the thing with docks work, if only some tablets can have them or if there are universal docks.
Additionally, it would be great if the tablet could play Full HD, or 720p at the very least
Price limit could be up to $500.
Thank you very much for your help everyone!
P.S.: One more thing, separately from the hardware, what is the best app available to do remote connection?

$500 + tax? lol well here we go, You didn't ask for screen size so I'll give some 7 in ones too.
All tablets have an HD resolution, but the only one that has Full HD is the Prime Infinity. To be honest each one has a great screen. Some tablets come with a dock that's is meant for them (Asus Transformer Prime and Galaxy Note 10.1) but each tablet also can be paired with a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse if you want. Also you can use a USB input dongle with the Note and Prime so that you can use a regular keyboard too (kind silly though =D).

For me it works pretty much with lag doing light task. So typing and make notes should be a breeze. However, you may experience lag if you are trying to watch a movie on it. I got lag when I tried it out, but I think it is because the GPU on my device (Galaxy Player 4.0) is not powerful enough. These device either have Mali-MP 400, Tegra 3 or Tegra 2 which are far superior. So I hope this helps you, and if you want I try and post reviews of each device.
Wow! Thanks a lot! I wasn't expecting such a detailed response!
From the suggestions you gave me I had been looking at the first three, the other two look really good too! I had been leaning mostly towards the Asus, although the Note also looks tempting, I'll have to do some thinking.

Wow! Awesome! I think I'll work on my own theme when I get my tablet!
You can get a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 refurbished on Amazon for $340. This is what i use, it has amazing battery life and a very clear screen! If you remote connect to your desktop it will waste a bunch of battery, but what you can do is type your notes on your tablet and sync them with Dropbox so they will automatically be shared with your desktop. Dropbox is AMAZING! I highly recommend it if you haven't checked it out!
I've been reading a lot about the Note 10.1. Frankly, tablets are a luxury for me as I already have a decent desktop at home, and don't really like carrying more stuff than I absolutely need, when commuting 2 hours back and forth every day. And I already have the Note 5.3, which frankly is a little over rated for its s-pen integration.
But now I want the tablet, thanks to all the marvelous reviews and comments I've seen! One burning question which I have is games. I'm not a heavy gamer but there's one game which I really liked on the S2, which doesn't work on the Note: Adventures of Tintin. Can someone confirm whether this game can be installed and played in the gorgeous mode? Rather than the laughably ugly 2D mode?
Another question: how good is video editing on this tablet? I'm asking this in behalf of someone who's considering getting an ipad with imovie (spelling?).
Lastly, is it easy to create or edit powerpoint slides with the Note? Its fiddly on my phone, but I imagine it to be much better on a larger device.
TIA!

I downloaded it to my Note 5.3, backed it up and side loaded it to the Note and it comes up saying, device is not compatible with this game. Please request a refund. So it would seem it doesn't work on the Note 10.1

Now I'm just waiting for thoughts about video editing.

I am using my dear little Infinity as a word manager at school which works somewhat good. I wish that Google Drive worked better with the browsers tho, maybe it will work better in the future
Back to the main question, to print documents I have to use it from a computer at school which in general means I have to save it in Word doc format. Sofar I find that OfficeSuite works best but it is usually a big difference how it formats the page compared to Word on the computers at school. Do you have any tips for minimizing this, like a better working Word app for Android or such?
Currently it's Textmaker from Softmaker - it's the only one that holds Word formatting and you can just import fonts from Windows. The UI takes a bit of getting used to, though.
I quite like smart office.
Ok, Ill try that when I get a bit more cash Kinda irritating that I bought OfficeSuite about a month ago before I asked this question... =)
EDIT: Is SoftMakers Presentations good too? Because its the same with the Presentations with all the different Office packs Ive tried, they simply dont work good.

for words, i generally use officesuite pro.
but for powerpoint, i like quickoffice better.
the other choice you have is kingsoft office, but i never tried it. many people say it's pretty good.
i think it's more of personal preferences rather than the software it self.
I use OfficeSuite Pro 6 but find that it's choppy with a simple Word document. Anyone else experience this? Maybe it has to do with the fact that I'm using Dropbox to keep documents synced, but I doubt it. Feature wise though, OP6 seems pretty nice, never had an issue aside from performance. Doesn't seem to slow down on my X2.

Softmaker's PP is pretty good - it keeps most formatting and it allows for animations. Not so good for creating PPs,
Thanx for your tips but as I said, none other than TextMaker seems to keep the format which is the most important part for me Hopefully they will fix that in the future tho And I spent the money for TextMaker yesterday =) And as you said, not the best gui...

Another vote for Kingsoft.
I really like Kingsoft as well. My only issue with it, is that it doesn't know how to handle equations and certain symbols properly, so I usually just ask someone to export it to pdf and send it to me.
I've fond that a mixture works best for me.
For Spreadsheets, I find that my old, tried, tested and true Docs2Go works best, for both viewing existing spreadsheets and for adding new data. I bought D2G a long time ago when they put it on an absurd sale price.
For Word docs, it's a toss up, bit it seems like Kingsoft is edging out the competition. QuickOffice is a very close second. I got the Pro version of QO via Amazon Market place when they had it on sale for free.
For PPTs, well, I haven't found anything that is fool proof, other than a laptop running Windows XP+ and M$ Office 2007+.
On my Infinity, I've got like 5 suites installed to try to test this out (it's funny seeing 2 rows of icons asking me which program I want to open .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files every time lol).
Here's to wishing that CloudON was working on the Infinity - problem solved, from what I hear.
I'm almost tempted to start using my RDP Client and using my home beast to do all of this stuff....sheesh.
Thanx again all for the tips and replys but I have already decided, TextMaker is the only one thats interesting because the other ones have too much difference in formating

Hoho why hallo thare =) Same name on R3D?
I use textmaker out of all programs including quickoffice HD and kingsoft, and that is the only one that keeps up with my typing speed, and seems to have the most functionality and ease of use, as well as a built in spell check, that once downloaded and installed works amazingly. It is basically the only program I use for writing, and has gotten rid of my chief grievance, that I miss MSword, about my switch from a laptop to a tablet for daily use.
It's fairly cheap too.

After some testing I use Officesuite
Only suit with which the spreadsheet is not a letdown and where you can use the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate.
Haven't used Softmakers SW yet
Though every improvement in Office programs is welcome... since it's definitely a weak spot of Android for now
I've only used Polaris Office and OfficeSuite. I can't really pick a favorite. We should have MS Office availability in May 2013 so that's cool. I've used Office 2013 on the Surface and it blows away any of the Android Office products.

I have a quick question for all of you with the tf300:
My brother recently purchased the note 10.1 and I had the chance to play with it over the weekend. It's great, but I think it's a little out of my price range and the tf300 is the form factor I'd like. I'm a student, so being able to have the keyboard functionality is ideal. I know there's docks available for the note 10.1, but the tf300 with dock is more in my price range.
That being said, the functionality I wanted was in polaris office. I like to take my notes in the powerpoint format, and on my pc I've been able to crudely use the inking tools to scribble out things, with the majority of my notes going into the notes field. The note 10.1 has the ability to annotate free hand right on the slides using polaris office v4. Unfortunately, the tf300 demo units all had v3, and with no internet access, so I wasn't able to check if I could update the store model and see if that functionality exists. There was also no cursor visible in the notes section on the tf300, so you couldn't see where you were typing until you started typing.
So, my question is: can you update polaris office to v4, and can you write on the slides with your finger (or capacitive stylus)? OR, do you know of another way to do this? I realize an RT device would allow me to do this, but I don't want to purchase (IMHO) a gimped PC. I could wait for the Windows 8 Pro tablets to come out, but they're all looking to be three times as expensive as this setup would be.
I realize I can export the slides to PDF and use an annotating software, but that's not what I'm looking for.
Thanks!
The latest Jellybean ROM updates it to V3.5, so no luck getting V4 from Asus yet.
Ah, gotcha. Any chance there's any alternatives that allow that?

So, I guess you might want to look for other options. There are several apps for taking notes with a stylus, ASUS SuperNote is pretty good (comes pre-installed), I know its not exactly what you need.
But if you can wait a while ASUS might update polaris, and Microsoft Office is being released for Android hopefully in the 1Q of 2013. Another note, the TF300T is pretty good with a stylus, but I bet the Note 10.1 is a lot better from what I've seen. I guess you could get the TF300T from a store with at least 30 days return policy and try it out.
Thanks everyone for all the responses. I'll keep these things in mind proceeding forward. It's just been extra tempting to get it lately with the black friday specials and now the cyber monday deals!
