If anybody can actually read this thread about "What would Arizona's immigration bill do?": that live_strong moderator is really intolerant and a reverse-racist.
I posted making a parallel that the bill is basically walking down the path of racial discrimination toward how the Jews had to wear their stars in the Nazi-regime, and then live_strong permanently banned me for making a racial slur. Seriously?
I challenged him to prove it since it requires my actually using a slur, but he doesn't want to debate it for a few months, lol.
I'm glad the moderators here are much more level-headed.
The HoFo moderator response is here.
This should go in the Off-Topic section.

I can't view the thread... I tried to look up on Google to see what the law actually did but I kept getting debates and news about the opposition to the bill.
What exactly did you say?
How come you can't refer a Jew to a Jew? I don't think their is another word for them.
@~~Tito~~ I agree, this thread should be moved there ...

I said pretty something like "might as well put Jewish stars on the immigrants at this rate ..." following the description of the bill where immigrants have to carry most of their papers with them all the time now.
This bill sounds pretty fascist to me, but apparently expressing that is enough to get an instant forever-ban.
Well, after getting their supervisor moderator to look at this, it was agreed there was sarcasm and warning not necessary, and ban lifted.
I think some person might have been offended at history getting invoked, but live_strong is undeserving as a moderator. Talk about repeating mistakes of the past and restricting free-speech, even if it is a private forum.
Ah fun with bad mods.
On one forum we had a mod say "6 million isn't what you'd call a large number in the grand scheme of things"
They've also let people get away with calling Pakistanis "cavemen"
I have received an 'infraction' from an XDA Moderator know as "Fallen Spartan".
As the thread is now edited by him, you can't see my post that he described "spam". The thread although is here.
The story is, Fallen Spartan had just asked everyone on the forum to stay on topic. Somebody then put a GIF (he quotes it was a PNG, he is wrong) of Michal Jackson eating popcorn at the movies right after his "stay on topic" post. I then replied "Yes, that's really staying on topic, thanks" and I received this notice.
Our regular Atrix forum mod is Mr. Clown. He has been a good mod so far and does what is necessary. Now we have this new guy, Fallen Spartan...
I want to know how to report him, as I believe he is abusing his XDA responsibility.
If you think I'm crazy, and he did the right thing, please say that also.
Thank you.

I have noticed as a new user that some moderators appear to take their jobs a little bit too seriously on here. Little bit of power drives them mad!! Its crazy so it is.
I have looked at that thread, and it does appear to have members consistently taking the thread off topic.
That is a DEVELOPMENT thread, and I see a fair bit of persistent off topic. The thread was derailed persistently, and it's a very important thread for users of the Atrix. there were numerous requests by members to keep it clean of junk, and this didn't happen.
The correct course of action here is to not reply or continue the off-topic, and hit the report button at the top right of the posts.
Also, you will find Fallen Spartan is in fact a member of the MC, and thus more than capable of dealing with cases such as this.
An infraction is a warning or "reminder" not to do something again, and does not cause any restrictions or other consequences.

here we are for to learn or enjoy with our devices, some times its funny, somtimes it´s serious, but i think here we aren´t for to discuss badly or to give the orders gifs to joke of some comments...
These situations must be cut and the MODERATOR is the manager of it, he chooses how to finish it

That sounds a bit too negative. I would like to add that this forum and site is fantastic. I have learned more about Android in a few weeks on this site than I would have trawling through manuals and websites. The work people put in to this site is commendable and that includes the moderators. Where else would you get such passion, innovation and good advice? So keep up the good work all and apologies if my comment sounded too negative.
The Mod asked people to stay ontopic. So you responded to an offtopic post with another offtopic post. You get told not to do this through an infraction and you whine about it? You sound like a 5 year old crying because someone else got some chocolate and your parents wont buy you some too. If you have a complaint go through the correct channels and try not to sound so self entitled. Live, Learn and move on.

under my opinion, your comment don´t sounds negative, and it´s the true... i think there isn´t any development forum better than XDA for develop or learn...
i´m spanish user, i talk a little bit english languaje and soo poor lol... and there are a lot of forums in spanish web but not so complete as this one, i believe that it does not cost anything to take care of this web and to follow the procedure of use..
Yes, you are correct, it was a gif file, not a jng. My mistake, but that had no relevance on me giving you an infraction
I understand your feelings about receiving an infraction and I know Mr Clown may let things slide, but you have to understand we received numerous complaints about that particular thread going off topic so I felt we (the mod team) needed to intervene. I cleaned the thread and left a gentle reminder for all to please abide by forum rules and keep thread on topic. Now the following 3-4 posts where the exact opposite of what I was hoping for. Yes, the first was in good nature, but it just encouraged everyone to do the exact opposite of what I said. No actions go without consequences and if I let those posts slide with no punishment other members would see this and also act inappropriately. Instead of you carrying on off topic and posting your post, all you had to do was report the post above you. But in turn your post also encouraged others to post off topic. I hope you understand my reasons. I do not go out actively dishing out infractions, but I will when I see it necessary. You only received a 3 point infraction which is not a permanent record against you, if is just a gentle reminder to abide by our forum rules and it will not be held against you if any further instances arose.
As for you reporting me, please do if you feel you have been harshly punished. Contact site admin mikechannon and he will look into my behaviour.
All mods have to abide by the same rules as you and everyone else.
Best regards
Rick
EDIT
The thread which I cleaned had over 15 pages of posts. After I cleaned it this number was reduced by half.....hence why we received so many complaints about thread in question and why I took action. Normally I would leave it to the FSM for that forum (Mr Clown), but unfortunately he wasn't online at the time

As one of the site's administrators, I am supposed to have some sort of decorum in the way I approach people, but this "new guy" as you call him has been part of the moderating team in this site for a very long time. As some others said earlier in this thread, infractions are just a reminder that you are doing something that is against the rules. Not cooperating with moderators is against the rules. In this particular case, Rick did nothing more than to clean a development thread from clutter posts and specifically asked that posts on that thread be relevant to the conversation taking place. You decided to reply to an OT post with another OT post (I honestly don't care if it was a png, a gif, a jpeg, or whatever format of image you used, so please don't hang on to trivial things in the matter). You went ahead and added a post that was not related to the thread's main subject, effectively going against a direct request from a moderator. It is the equivalent of being pulled over by a cop for speeding and left off with a warning, and the first thing you do the moment you turn on your car is to go from 0-100 mph in 10 sec right in front of the cop. What did you think was gonna happen?
At this point in time, I will consider this matter closed. If you come across a real injustice by a moderator, please feel free to contact either mikechannon or me.
Thanks.
These forums would be unbearable and unusable without the mods and the good work they do. All i see are kids with entitlement issues who need to learn how to moderate themselves better.

As I say "new guy" I mean "new guy" to the Atrix sub forums specifically. I see some people here saying what he did was his choice and it is fine that he did it, and a couple that think it was too much or thinks that a lot of the forum moderators are being more strict...
I know that this infraction is no big deal at all, I've known that all along. Regardless, I fell as I am being yelled at. And no matter a "big deal" or just a "warning"...I don't think it was at all necessary.
It doesn't seem to myself that I am making a big deal, but maybe I am and I just don't realize it. I won't report anyone. I don't want to try to over power anyone because I can't. And even if I could, now that I've calmed, I wouldn't. I don't want to make anyone mad, and I don't want to waste my time.
Maybe I just need to realize some moderators are more strict than others, so I should follow the rules closely at all times.
Thank you for your post, and please do close this thread.

Hello folks, my name is conantroutman and I'll be your forum moderator this evening...
Some of you may have noticed that Mr. Clown has been promoted to Senior Moderator, I am here to replace him.
I know I've got some big shoes to fill (pun intended). Clown shoes..... get it?....nevermind.. but I will try to keep on top of things and make sure the forums stay as tidy and organised as possible.
If you have any suggestions on how to improve this little section of XDA then just drop me a PM or leave a post in this thread and I'll see what I can do.
Should you encounter any issues that require moderation then don't hesitate to drop me a PM. Serious issues should be reported using the "Report Post" button at the top right of each post, minor issues (misplaced/duplicate threads, spam etc etc..) should just be reported directly to me via PM.
Enjoy...
Oh yeah, heres a little reminder of the forum rules.......
Forum & Marketplace Rules
FORUM RULES
1. Search before posting.
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
2. Member conduct.
2.1 Language: XDA is a worldwide community. As a result what is ‘ok’ to say in your part of the world may not be ok in someone else’s part of the world. Please think about who is reading what you write. Keep in mind that what you think of as acceptable use of language may not be acceptable to others. Conversely, while reading member posts, remember that word you find offensive may not be to the writer. Tolerance is a two way street.
2.2 Nudity: XDA is used by people of all ages, including minors. It's not acceptable to post nude/pornographic imagery, which includes exposure of the male or female genitalia or of female breasts.
2.3 Flaming: XDA was founded as a group of people sharing information about certain mobile phones. Sharing does not involve virtual yelling (flaming) it does involve working together to solve problems in an environment of mutual respect and understanding. Losing your temper and flaming another member, or group of members, is not acceptable behavior.
2.4 Personal attacks, racial, political and/or religious discussions: XDA is a discussion forum about certain mobile phones. Mobile phones are not racial, political, religious or personally offensive, therefore none of these types of discussions are permitted on XDA.
2.5 New Members: Treat new members the way you would have liked to have been treated when you were a new member. Provide the new members with guidance, advice and instruction always with respect and courtesy.
2.6 All members are expected to read and adhere to the XDA rules.
3. Post only using a clear subject and message.
You're most likely to receive a helpful answer to your question if you use a short subject title that describes your problem and a message that explains in detail what your problem is and what you've tried to solve it.
4. Use the English language.
We understand that with all the different nationalities not everyone speaks English well, but please try. If you're really unable to post in English use an online translator, You're free to include your original message in your own language below the English translation.
5. Post a message only once.
As a large forum we don't need unnecessary clutter, You're free to edit your message as you like, so if you do not receive an answer revisit your message and see if you can describe your problem better. Not everyone is online at the same time, it might take a while before you receive an answer.
6. Do not post warez.
If a piece of software requires you to pay to use it, either pay or find your cracks and serials somewhere else. We do not accept warez nor do we permit any member to promote or describe ways in which Warez, cracks, serial codes or other means of avoiding payment, can be obtained.
7. Do not spam.
If you wish to advertise a product, contact us we provide ads. But do not post it in the forums, it will be removed and you're likely to receive a ban.
You are however allowed to sell used goods like your own device, parts of your device or accessories for your device in the marketplace forum, please read the rules there before posting. (This rule includes signatures, if you use a signature it will appear in your post)
8. Donations.
We appreciate all donations to xda-developers.com, it keeps our forum online and well maintained. As a user you're allowed to ask for donations in your signature as a thank you for your hard work. However donations up front are not allowed, this forum is about sharing, not about getting paid to do something, that's what your job is for.
9. Don't get us in trouble.
Don't post copyrighted materials or do other things that will obviously lead to legal trouble. If you wouldn't do it on your own homepage, you probably don't want to do it here either. This does not mean we agree with everything the software piracy lobby try to impose on us, it simply means you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with legal hassle caused by you. Please use common sense: respect the forum, its users, and those that write great code.
10. Help others if you can.
If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably already quite a few people newer than you that would benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.
11. Don’t post with the intent on selling something.
As an elaboration to rule number 7, don’t use XDA to advertise your product or service. If you are the proprietor of a for-pay product or service, you may use XDA to get feedback, provide beta access, or offer support on the product, but you may not make any posts with the primary intent of selling. This includes posting press releases, announcements, or links to downloads for trial software. The only exception to this is when you’re posting an exclusive release to XDA.
12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If a dispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails then you may contact a moderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence you created the work then in the spirit of sharing all work will remain posted on the forums.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA unless that software comes with a license that waives these rules.
Welcome!
I hope you're the aggressive type.

Why is it that the so called MODS in this place would rather lock a thread than to accept the fact they are ****ed in the head! I don't know what the deal is with the MODS here but they need to get their heads out their ass and address the real issues instead of holding a grudge! You are loosing some great people because of your arrogant stupid ass I am god attitude. So I hope to see xda flop on its sorry ass!!!!!!! PEACE OUT!
Agreed.

Well although I think you could've said that in a more tasteful manner (as to not stoop down to their level) I still agree.
Tator's thread regarding dfgas' recognized developer status (or lack thereof) was a pretty calm thread and, aside from a few comments made by other users (which were minor at worst) it was not in violation of any XDA forum rules. It was more importantly though our little Mesmerize (and Showcase) community coming together collectively to show our support for one of our developers. The overwhelming majority agreed that he did deserve recognized developer status. Closing that thread, in my opinion, was about as close as you can get to downright censorship in an attempt to control our opinions here. We have the right to speak our minds and voice our opinions, as long as its within forum rules. If a few members bend or break a rule, then by all means, a moderator can edit his post, but the entire thread should not be closed, especially when we are voicing our support for one of our developers.
Considering...
"[XDA] is and always will be a site for developers, pure and simple. Without them we are nothing, without them there would be no reason for XDA Developers to exist; we should never ever forget that. Without them this place would not be called XDA-Developers but something else, e.g Mobile Phone User Support Services For Ungrateful Nerds. XDA is about developing and is for developers. Any user that recognizes that will gain the most benefit from this site."

I am still very shocked that a thread was closed when its sole purpose was to show our support for one of our developers and to let him know that we were behind him even after he had been denied recognition that he has absolutely earned.
I also believe part of the frustration and anger a lot of us share is regarding the manner in which the thread was locked. jerdog and I do not see eye to eye, he knows that and I know that, and that is what it is, however I will say in the most respectful way that I think telling, basically our sub-forum as a whole, that this manner was not 'our place' to comment on was disrespectful to all of us and a slap in all our faces. Because it is absolutely our place. A developer with no users and no community behind him/her is no more useful than a lone hammer just sitting idle without someone around to manipulate it. A developer needs his users just as much as the users need their developer. Without users, a developer's work is pointless. So to tell us it is not 'our place' to voice our opinion when we believe our developer has been wronged, completely undermines the developer-user relationship and is a extemely poor attitude to display. Especially to refer to our support of dfgas as "whining and complaining" I thought was completely uncalled for.
holy crap, you made an intelligent post :O
haha I completely agree with you on all counts. these guys need to get their act together, the more they act like they did in that thread the less I want to come to this site for anything.
Sent from my MIUI SCH-i500
The reason for the thread's closing boils down to these few points:
The only person who can petition for someone to be recognized as a developer, is THAT DEVELOPER THEMSELVES. That was stated a few times in that thread as well as the PM sent to the applicant when they aren't selected.
Any attempt to drum up support is counter-productive as it's not your place, and only comes across as whining which is reserved for ages 0-2.
That being said, any further attempts to drum up a mob will fall under the rules of XDA and you will be, at the least, infracted - and most likely given a vacation from the site so as to pursue other hobbies. It's the rules - if you don't like them - there are other places you can frequent - you're not being paid to stay here, nor are we (Mods and Admins) paid to put up with it.
This thread is closed. If you have any issues with that, feel free to PM me or any SM.
Got some cleanup requests already, so I figured this might help.
The thing with dev thread "spam" is that it is really in the eye of the beholder. :cyclops:
Ultimately it is up to us mods of course but getting some guidance by the devs would be helpful. We can do a thread cleaning on request of the OP, but what I view as "spam" is not necessarily the same as wardfan220's definition of spam. Or the OP's definition of spam.
Everybody knows it when they see it, but what I see is not what you see.
Please do not respond to those posts or troll or flame the poster. Instead, click on the little triangle button in the upper corner of the post and report it so that wardfan220 and I might deal with it appropriately. We aren't trying to stop people from posting, we are trying to teach them to post appropriately.
Some general types of posts that get reported are:
"Thanks for a great ROM" posts
"ETA" posts
"Bug reports" without proper troubleshooting or logging
"Didn't read the OP" posts
Off Topic for various reasons
Please consider this from two angles. What is unacceptable from a new user with 10 posts is often tolerated or even acceptable when done by a senior member or a dev team member for each example above. This can often lead to a perception of unfairness, from both sides.
We will get PM's by new users asking, "why did you delete my "thanks" post in the dev thread and not delete member xxxxxxx's "thanks" post? Is it because member xxxxxxx has 150 posts and I have 10?"
We will get PM's from current users asking "why did you delete my Only-Slightly-Off-Topic post in the dev thread? I have been a good member and it was just a little off topic and the dev doesn't mind".
If the devs could write up some general rules or guidelines as to what they find acceptable or not in their first or second post, when they ask for a thread cleaning or when members report posts as "dev thread spam", it would be very helpful to us making a more informed decision on what is spam and what is not, and have a better chance of getting the dev/OPs desired results, whether in avoiding posts or after the party cleanup.
Discussions and thoughts are welcome.
Thank you,
mf2112
^^ I agree that there is a very fine line between what's acceptable and what's not.
Earlier, I planned on making an "Etiquette thread" just for general guidance, but seeing some replies from fellow members on other thread, gave up on it.
One thing I believe in is that asking for ETA is definitely spam, irrespective of what beautiful wrapper it's wrapped in, because it basically undermines whatever the developer has done so far, in her/her personal time. So, if reported, these posts should be warned.
Other thing I believe is people should be more lenient towards "New users". Instead of scaring them away, or instead of spoonfeeding them with answers, they should be directed to correct thread, where they can read/understand what's going on, and maybe be directed towards development/modding/porting/etc. That's the only way 9003 would be out of "low activity device"
Will add more(got some more as I did a lot of thinking on this) later on, as I need to get a haircut now.
Thanks for this discussion.
Well i admit i am pretty aggressive to noobs which is wrong and against the rules in the first place, but some of them just get on my nerves.
They sometimes just call me or a dev fags / (place world's insults here) for helping them with their question and then sticking a "It's not the right place to ask such questions' note or because a dev is taking his time and not updating something every second.
Others also ignore all other posts / instructions, ask the same question and keep spamming and not accepting to follow the installation instructions again, they don't even post a logcat/whatever to support their claims.
I mostly resort to being a little aggressive and reporting the post if they don't cooperate.. Now i am not a mod, but i don't like being treated like that or seeing some respected member getting insulted because of a fat lazy noob not doing anything and insulting everyone.
Conclusion:
I agree with everything you said here and i do think mods should work with devs and members directly and should take some serious actions against offenders from now on.
I really feel bad for you with having to deal with such issues daily
Goodluck!
Has there been any luck with this idea?
Have devs even attempted it or just ignored this post?

Not much response, but that's ok.
That's a shame really because it's a really good idea.
