A few Lollipop questions - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. I have a few questions since flashing the Lollipop factory images.
1. I heard that Lollipop would see a new messenger, and that it would be the default upon installation, but do not see it. Is it supposed to be a stand alone app, or installed as part of the factory image?
2. I've noticed that my recent apps persist after a reboot. Maybe it did this on KitKat and I didn't notice, but I'm thinking it didn't. Do everyone's recents persist, even after a reboot?
3. I've heard about ambient display, but cannot find settings for it anywhere. Is this something specific to the Nexus 6, or Lollipop?
4. I've also heard about Lollipop bringing back the possibility of moving apps to the SD card, but also cannot find out how to do this. I don't need it myself, but have a friend with a need to do so.
Thanks. Best community on the net.

1. The messenger app is in the Play Store
2. I have noticed this too. Not a big deal
3. It doesn't come with the Nexus 5 update. That feature is for AMOLED displays only
4. Haven't really looked into this since we don't have an SD card. But yeah, they added SD card support. Don't really know much about what it is for though.

1. it got released yesterday, check the play store for it.
2. its how its supposed to work now.
3. its for samoled screens, we have an lcd screen.
4. your apps are already on sd. they get stored in your main storage automatically. its been this way since a long time ago.

Thanks guys! Oh, and one more question for now: Any way to get rid of the profiles icon in the notification area?
Edit: already another question! Is there no gallery app other than G+ Photos that comes with Lollipop?

What's about double tap to wake? Shouldn't this feature come with the update?

I don't believe there is a way to remove the profile picture. And Photos is the default gallery app. You can download any other one from the Play Store though

No. I don't even think the Nexus 6 has this. Only the Nexus 9

official 4.4.2 on the way :)

Samsung has been on a KitKat spree lately, and it has just about covered most of its popular devices from the last two(ish) years with the update. Today, Verizon updated its support docs for the Galaxy SIII, which indicates that the update is on its way in the coming days, as well.
Aside from KitKat, this update brings a couple of new enhancements, like the inclusion of Isis. Otherwise, it's basically the same song and dance – updated applications, bug fixes, an improved multi-app experience, the like.

Yes, there shouldn't be discussion threads until and update is going to be released. Not everybody has the time to read through a discussion thread that's been around for months to see if there is an update.
Just my 2¢
Sent by me.
Just got a notification for update! Kitkat 4.4.2 :good:
Me too !!
Me Too !!
Wait, let me post that again
Me too !!
Guess what?
I'm not taking any OTAs
I'm waiting for the developer release so I won't be f---ked.
No me too !
Performed update. Now what is this icon?!
I performed the update last night and now there is an icon in my notification bar that won't go away and doesn't appear when I maximize the window. Its incredibly frustrating!
It won't let me post a link and the image file is too big, so add dropbox to the beginning of this and it is a picture of the icon.
/sh/z6vh4b8g4qknlog/AABIf5TlJUNssKa-q-VC8Dhna
Does anyone know what this is?
Nevermind! Found it doing a google image search. It is the NFC icon and can be accessed by expanding notifications and touching the top right (4 square like) icon. From there you can add the toggle button to your quick menu or turn it off.
this is the point in time were i wish i didnt have an unlocked bootloader
Did the update change/unlock anything useful?
Back when I had JB I asked this forum if I could install KitKat and was told it wasnt possible. Did the update make custom roms possible again?

Thanks for the quick reply. That's really disappointing though. I was really disappointed to see that, after updating, my phone doesnt look any different. According to the official kitkat page, I should have new features like immersion, updated hangouts and a new phone app. I don't see any of them, but my phone says its running version 4.4.2 and I'm current on updates. Am I missing something?

OK I'm over lollipop..

I'm on ota lollipop unlocked bootloader and rooted , am I able to go back to KitKat ? And how maybe thanks
Use the 4.4.2 factory image to wipe your device, and restore to 4.4.2.

What was your problem with it?
Do I flash through custom recovery?
If you want to go back to Kitkat, you need to download the recovery image from nvidia developers site, directly from the bootloader.

I have sorted many bugs you've mentioned, for example, writing or reading from the sdcard is not a problem for me, and actually quickpic works better than the gallery use to.

I, like others, cannot get any compatible app to see my SD card through the Google Storage Access Framework. The SAF itself only shows internal.

There are the instructions for flash nvidia recovery images. You have to diwnload one zip fike which contains recovery, OS, battery.dc, etc. Flash them all using the step by step command lines they describe you there. Not CMW but faatboot adb.

Cool! :good:
I'm with you...
I went back to KitKat tonight for a lot of the same reasons you listed, and a few additional one (IE: it is butt ugly). The whole flat thing has got to go -- it is also a usability nightmare. I should not have to guess what is an effing button. Yea, we don't need old school Windows 3.1 style 3D buttons, but definitely need SOMETHING.
Also, definitely back you up on the app switching being an total nightmare. Have all the good UX designers retired and we are stuck with a bunch of noobs that don't know WTF they are doing?
Maybe if Google starts to see the marketshare of 5.x going *DOWN*, they won't keep beating a dead horse like MS with WP and will actually do something about the usability of their OS.
-- Brian
PS - so I don't start some OS war, I hate WP, iOS and now Android equally. They are all nasty mobile operating systems in their current forms.
The "and now Android" part is the biggest bummer. But yeah, that's what happens when its biggest developer forgets about making things for Android and just makes things for themselves.
At least lollipop fixed the sd card issues... Okay , it didn't. It brought more.
I feel that nVidia got lazy on this update leaving out shortcuts to certain settings

Card stacks are weird.
If you want the gallery side load the 4.0 camera app gives you the old camera and the old gallery.
Run SD Card Fix if you are rooted to get EX SD card functions back.
I think you can side load the old Just Write as well.
My battery life has been awesome on Lollipop. Getting about 20 hours per charge and about 4.5 hours of screen on time
Also not sure what you mean about iOS popups.

1. Google mimicks iOS style popups with Hangouts. The popups are large, often get in the way of things I'm working on (with an 8" screen!), they cast a shadow that goes 1/4 of the way down the screen, and THESE POPUPS CANNOT BE STOPPED within the offending app. It's iOS notifications, minus the control. Love iOS or hate it (I fall into the latter camp mostly), Google somehow took that feature and made it worse.
2. Regarding antiquated stock apps: sure, some people build it from source, but apps like that tend to be finicky or laced with malware. I like QuickPic, but at the end of the day, Google apps take up space, a lot of space, even when disabled. Internal storage is precious.
3. Regarding rooting for more storage : it's an okay workaround, but it's sad Lollipop breaks stuff that worked in Android 4.3... but the bigger sin is that it failed to fix things Google said were fixed.
I'm not planning on rooting my device, and as a result I have several apps that come with fullscreen ads on boot (YouTube), try to sell me news sources when I can get newsreaders for free (Google Play Newsstand), a gallery that's built into a social network, and more. I can disable them and cobble together a replacement, but....
Where's the "stock" in Android?
Don't get me wrong, NVIDIA did a great job putting in the stock email app (Nexus devices all forced users into GMail, their email app was an apology and a link to the latter), and I absolutely appreciate their full Shutdown menu complete with Restart, Mute, and Airplane Mode. The Nexus 7, Stock Google, doesn't have any of that. But still, I feel like my great tablet is hamstrung.

[MOD][GUIDE]How To Enable The Hidden Alternate SystemUI In Note5

Not sure how many of you are aware, but there is a completely different user interface built into the Note5 that's hidden. I thought maybe some of you might like to check it out just for fun. It allows you to place widgets and apps on the lockscreen and has a bunch of cool lockscreen effects. Also, the "notifications panel" and the "recents" page are totally different, as well as many other interesting features. I added some screenshots for you guys to check out in this post.
Here are the steps to activating it:
1) First, anytime you're playing around with the SystemUI, even if it's a built in feature, it's a good idea to do a full system backup in TWRP. Not necessary, but recommended.
2) Next, you will need to have the Galaxy Apps store installed on your device. If you happened to have deleted it like I did, then I've attached the APK to this post for anyone that needs to reinstall it.
3) Open the Galaxy Apps store and update it if/when it prompts you.
4) Once the store has loaded, search for the words "Good Lock". Click on the app and click "Update", then "Install" and reboot the device when it prompts you.
(This is the hidden SystemUI that you already have on your device, but it needs the current update to work.)
5) Once rebooted into the new SystemUI, it will begin walking you through all of your new customization options. You can change any of these anytime you want by opening the "Good Lock" app in your applications list.
NOTE: If you decide that you want to deactivate the alternate SystemUI at any point, then you can just open up the "Good Lock" app and click on "Uninstall" too. You can also uninstall the Galaxy Apps store at any time and features like the new "Recents" page, if you don't like it, can be toggled off in the app as well.
Anyhow, I hope you guys have some fun with this. I'm trying it out for awhile just for kicks. Be sure to let everyone know what you thought of the new SystemUI in the comments too!
Just installed this running N5 Express ROM with no issues yet. Really like being able to have Tasker widget shortcuts on the lockscreen.

That's a really good idea. Been trying to think of a more useful widget to use on the lock screen. So far I've only added a fancy clock/weather widget. [emoji14] Maybe I'll give it a try.
Cool cant wait to try it out!

TWRP is mentioned for backing up your current configuration of TouchWiz(and your device in general) if you can before using Good Lock in case anything goes wrong. Obviously backing up your device is never required, but definitely always recommended when altering the system in any way, regardless of where it comes from. It's important to understand that Good Lock isn't just some Samsung app in the app store or just another launcher that changes the home screen, apps page, etc. It tweaks the system ui itself, including the look and function of the notifications panel, lock screen capabilities and more. It's true that you can just revert back to TW whenever you want pretty easily from within Good Lock, but the process isn't perfect. In fact, I myself applied it and reverted back only 2 times and the second time something went terribly wrong during the reversion and the system halted and it would no longer boot after that, so I had to restore a previous backup which I was glad to have had. All the data that I hadn't recently backed up though was of course lost, so yes...a TWRP backup is recommended when using Good Lock.
Also worth mentioning is the fact that if you're not running a compatible version of the stock firmware or at least a compatible TouchWiz rom, it will try to prevent you from installing it by not showing it in an app store search or by blocking access to the app's page(if you're following a link) in the Galaxy Apps store. For instance, it was there when I was on stock Marshmallow, but does not allow me to access it on stock Nougat. Instead I get error messages saying the app is not supported on my device when trying to load the Good Lock page.
Here is the link btw in case anyone can't find Good Lock in a search and wants to check if it can be used on their device. If it shows it, then it's compatible, if it doesn't then it's likely not. Just open the link in a mobile browser and click "OK" if prompted.

WTF dude? Seriously. Stop being an ass and actually read what I wrote. It's the least you can do after I typed all that out. You're not helping anyone by TROLLING this thread and repeatedly mentioning something so extremely redundant. If you don't want to backup then don't backup. I clearly said that it was obviously not required to do a backup and that I was only recommending to do it because I lost data and couldn't boot after selecting the option to revert back one time. Stop wasting people's time with your pointless comments. NOWHERE does it say in my post that making a backup is Required, so get over yourself. Either stop being a destructive ass or go and troll someone else! Your negative comments are not welcome here.

Few questions regarding Note 20 Ultra ( please help )

Hey guys, Im fairly new to this Note 20 Ultra and Android in general so I decided to ask this here but wasn't sure if I should make a separate topic for each anyways here we go I hope you can help me out:
1. How can I make it so when I receive text messages, notifications, etc... the phone screen turn on like iPhones?
2. I'm using Google Maps for navigation but it seems to be running at a very low FPS and it's not smooth at all, is there a way to make it run smoother/higher frame rate?
3. Whats the best way to fully format and reinstall the firmware on my Note 20 Ultra ( I have the unlocked US version purchased directly from Samsung )/ for reference I know I can do a reset from the settings but I wanna know if there is a way to hook it up to PC and have the phone completely wiped and install a fresh OS like I used be able to do on iPhone.

Thanks for taking the time to reply at least but:
1. Already have edge lightning which is not what i was asking: ( Turn the screen on when receiving txt messages )
2. done that as well, doesn't fix the low sub 30 fps issue. looking for any hidden settings/mods to get higher fps in Maps
3. honestly that was not helpful, I'm simply asking what's the best way to go about it, not bothering is simply wasn't what I was looking for.
4. again thanks for taking the time none the less.
1. For this I use a third party app as the Note 20 does not have anymore the notification LED. This app is called aodNotify (from Play Store) and it has option to wake up the screen when a notification arives.
The phone itself does not have such an option, it has something else called "lift to wake" that will wake the screen if you pick it up from where it was standing....but that's regardless if you get a notification or not
2. Dunno what to say here, Maps works fine for me. Maybe reinstall the app, wipe its cache, things like this. But I presume you already tried these
3. Download your official firmware either from Sammobile site or using a tool like Frija, Samfirm (is deprecated) and such, then write the firmware on your phone using Odin. This will ensure you won't trigger Knox and that you'll have official firmware written as new

Welcome to the forums, welcome to Android, and welcome to the Note family!!
To start off with, there's going to be hiccups switching platforms. Apple and Android do the same things, but for different people. Apple just works, but it's the same experience across every device. Android requires some tinkering and customization, but the beauty is you CAN do that.
And some people just can't make the switch, and that's cool. I left Android for Apple years ago, but after months of trying to make it like my Android, I realized that was stupid and switched back to Android and never looked back. Then there's some people who switch platforms and love it. Then there's others who carry and Apple in one pocket, and an Android in the other, because they appreciate the differences.
1. I second AOD notify. I love that app and have used it on my Note 10, my Note 20, and plan to see if it works on the Z Fold 2 when it arrives next week. It can mimic the LED notification light, wake your screen, etc. Also, remember you have an Always On Display that will show all notifications without turning on the screen. I know that's not what you asked, but OPTIONS.
2. Do you have the adaptive refresh rate on? My Google Maps has never been choppy. My work phone used to be an Apple, but I don't remember it having smoother navigation than my Android. I wish I could see your two phones side by side to see what you mean.
3. We don't have iTunes, so you have to do a little more research and work, but we do have an equivalent for reinstalling the factory firmware. For Pixels it's a few command line commands. For Samsung, it's using a Windows application called ODIN.
I say this not to be lazy, but because it will genuinely help you way more...but use the search bar and do some research here. Also check out the the other Galaxy forums (S series, Note 10, even Note 9 and 8). You'll find many tutorials on how to flash the firmware with ODIN. More in depth than I could ever type here. I think I even wrote a guide back in the Note 8 days and posted it here.
But honestly, 99.9% of the time, flashing the firmware isn't necessary and is a waste of time. But, if you want to do it, you can!
The learning this new platform will be fun if you really dive in and start reading and learning. We were all new to Android one time as well. Some of us old farts, like me, came Blackberry and have been doing this for a while. Some people tend to forget they were new once too.
Search, read, then ask questions, and you'll be fine. Welcome!!

Question Stock Camera missing

Hello there,
after updating to c.61 eu my stock camera app from op disappeared and I have no clue how to get it back without a total factory reset. I hoped this missing app will change with the update to c.62, but... no.
I already tried to install the stock camera apk from several sites, but up till now no luck at all.
Did you have an idea? Maybe via fastboot comands?
Best
Exact same problem, for now I'm using GCam Mod as an alternative but it's really frustrating and it lacks quite some stuff from the stock camera.
Updated to C62 too (and I also used full ZIP to do so), still camera missing :/

Did you have an idea? Maybe via fastboot comands?

If you Came from A11 11.2.10.10 and updated without unhiding your apps this is why. Launcher and route to hide apps is different from A11 to 12. Rehide after update. And yes factory reset is only way your gonna get cam back.
@mattie_49: I was already on c.47 and everything was fine I did not understand what you mean by hiding apps. Can you clearify it somehow?
Unfortunately I never hid my apps, I don't think that's the cause. The camera app doesn't show up in the system apps list, and I noticed that the calculator is missing too for whatever reason, seems like there is some issue with system apps. One thing I noticed is when trying to shoot in 4K with the Gcam Mod it crashes and it leaves a log in the download folder where it says Camera HAL package not found, but it could just be an issue of compatibility with Gcam and this specific phone. Still trying to find a solution as there is such a huge difference between the stock camera and Gcam.
Could someone please upload the APK for the camera app either from C48 or if you have it on C61/C62? I'd be really grateful, perhaps the APKs online are just from different imcompatible models
I'm on the same boat guys... Cam app is missing after update from C48 to c62.
Update : I've been diging and it looks like it's gone for good. It's not in, hidden app, button shortcut are not working and adb shell cmd package install-existing com.oplus.camera is without effect.
Tell me I don't have to do a factory reset....
I fear you have to....up till now I was not able to get it back...if somebody know it better and could give and it would be great
I have spent a big amount of time searching and the only solutions seem
1) Factory reset (atleast from what a user claimed, although he might have been affected by the whole hiding apps thing)
2) Possibly try to install again the same update over using the local update method (haven't been able to test it).
I still think that if somebody would be so kind to share the APK from a working system we could try to install it, but so far nobody chimed in. Also I tried multiple times just for the sake of it to turn on and off privacy features (I never used them in the first place), and the app isn't there either, just like it doesn't show up in the app list.
I'm using this as a temporary workaround, but it's not as great.

Thank you so much! At first trying to install it would give INSTALL_FAILED_TEST_ONLY, however using "adb install -t name.apk" managed to install it. That said when you open it it immediately crashes like other apps I've tried from APK mirror, I'm on EU device and only have C62 as latest version but I don't really think the issue is that your camera build is from a newer build, although if anyone wants to share a C62 APK feel free just to rule it out.
adb logcat gave me a bunch of errors when opening the camera app, I attached my logcat here if anyone wants to take a look (although it seems pretty messy, perhaps you'd have better luck logcatting your own).
It really feels like for whatever reason OnePlus messed something up with these updates (and I guess only for some people, could be only on EU devices), either forgetting to include some stuff or perhaps for whatever reason something is misconfigured in the /system or /data partitions after updating, and maybe a clean install wouldn't have this issue (or a reinstall of the same update in full ZIP on top)
EDIT: for whatever reason can't upload the logcat :/
Finally found a solution!
After such a long time searching, and not really wanting to do a factory reset, now that OOS13 was out and I still didn't have the camera, I decided to use the .zip from Oxygen Updater to do a second full upgrade (on already updated OOS13), and it restored a lot of the apps and some other stuff that was missing! Yay! (Of course remember to root again before update reboot)
But, the camera force closes as soon as I open it, so I still need to find a fix for that, unless factory reset is the only solution :'(
EDIT: Finally, I feel like starting to cry now, I needed to disable the camera app, enable it again, cancel data and grant all permissions manually before opening it, and it works, I hope this helps out others!
EDIT 2: I was missing calculator, clock and other OnePlus apps, as well as the new OOS13 sidebar, now they're all back, so if you have issues try this!

Thanks for writing this mate! I am having the same problem, no stock camera, no clock. Many icons missing!
Wil try this now!
This just confirms my theory, whenever installiing a new major version, a total system reset should be made to avoid problems. I installed this thinking it was another 12 update.
Solution for me:
LE2115_11_F16 (Android 13) is here
Hi everyone, Still new to OnePlus and its update/upgrade cycle, so sorry if you already know this, but my 9 just got updated to 2115_11_F16 and Android 13, with the October 2022 security update. That's it, that's the tweet... :) EDIT: it's...
