Has anyone any experience with Archos Android tablets?

Hello everyone,
I just lost my HTC Desire to my sister, since her Nokia 6630 lost its live just about a day ago.
She just grab my Desire and leaving my SIM-card behind. (Stupid is, she knows my all of my password and pin numbers on that phone...I guess she was spying on me for quite some time)...well...she did play the games inside my Desire...a LOT!!
I am really stupid!
Well...She talks more than I do on the phone...so...I guess I have to accept that..I am busy writing my master work at this moment...and I don't wanna have a fight with her ...not at his point of time...(I assume she knew that too).
The problem is, I don't have enough money to get a good smartphone which can match my "previous" Desire. Legend, Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab, etc. are way too expensive for me right now,
and HTC Wildfire can not meet my expectation.
Well...I can still make phone calls with my ..stupid Nokia 1800...It is juts...something big is obviously missing on that pile of plastic..
Now, I am thinking of getting an Archos 70 8GB Internet tablet, which will be there soon enough.
It will cost about the same price as Wildfire, but with more capabilities (at least according to the spesification).
So..I think...perhaps, I can use that along with my (stupid) Nokia 1800 Phone.
but, the thing is...I have never used anything from Archos before.
Can anyone post your experience using Archos previous Android tablets?
Is the company any good by the customer service?
Anything?

Hmmm...still no replies for days in this forum and several others, which I have posted...
Even my closest friends don't even have a single experience on Archos...
Perhaps I should rethink about getting a tablet PC from Archos.

Check out archosfans.com if you want to talk to people who are familiar with the brand. I had portable archos mp3/media players back before ipods became the standard, but I haven't used their products in quite a few years. The newest android tablets are interesting, especially since they're considerably less expensive than ipads and gtabs, but until I get a chance to hold one I'll refrain from any judgments.

Considering that the newer tablets coming out by Archos are Android, I would love to see xda development for them and eventually a section for Android tablets.

Get a orange san francisco, 512mb ram, 800x480 oled screen, 2.1 pre loaded and a custom 2.2 rom available, also its unlockable for less than £5.

Archos's new Android tablet line is coming out as we speak. I just received word that mine was shipped today, so it should be here tomorrow ... I pre-ordered a 101 tablet.
I hope that xda development will come on this as it takes off (apparently there were too many pre-orders made that many sites shut down the possibility)
I am a first-time buyer of their products, so i can't comment on their customer service level .. and actually not on their product quality either.
but I'll be happy to report back once I get my hands on it tomorrow

Hmm...experience...LeeDroid you mean?
My impression until now :
Somehow faster than stock ROM, apps are installable to SDCard (most important), Desire proc become OC-able (not doing it), stable, slight improvement in battery live, still has Sense (third important), DSP manager become available (second important), performance gain for 3D games (fourth important) .
I like also the Desire HD rom (RCMixHD), but too bad that the camera is not working and I went back to LeeDroid.
I wanna try several other roms but I will play with LeeDroid for the time being first.

I can only speak on Archos as a brand.
They are fantastic. THEY not Apple are the leaders in multimedia portables and have been for a decade. Mp3,Portable vide,tablets etc. Archos always has a product in the top 3 in each category the last decade.
I cant speak on tablets though. But Ive owned and purchased for others numerous Archos products. Love them.

well a phone is not a tablet and vice versa. in fact, a good android phone and an archos tab pair very well together, with wireless/Bt tether.
I have an HTC evo, and an Archos 70it (new Gen8).... froyo should be on the archos within days which will then give me exactly what i want in terms of portability and technology.
smart phone -> tablet -> laptop -> desktop ... a tool for every job, and a home server that serves media and files to all of them, wired and wireless, anywhere in the house.
sry... bit OT, but simply loving my tablet and it is a great addition. froyo will perfect it.

Considering that you have the EVO and the Archos, are you using the built in hotspot or wifi teetering or pdanet?

actually neither yet - i'm blanketed with wifi so it's not a necessity. i will be testing for fun tonight but have had some other things take priority.
planning to just do the wireless tether. rooted the evo here and used wireless tether with my laptop about a month ago, figured the same would be fine for the AIT...
i also read about BT tether available, may try that but idk the pros/cons yet...
edit: I'm in NY as well, not the city though - in the Adirondacks.

The archos doesn't support ad-hoc wifi networks, so just make sure if your device creates an "ad-hoc" network, then it can't connect
However bluetooth tether works (I still have a g1 and I'm bluetooth tethering to my A70)

I have an HTC EVO also and I got an Archos 10.1. I had a previous Archos MP3/Video player from way back. Can you tell me since my phone is not rooted is there anyway I can tether. Goling to Vegas in a couple weeks and room doesn't have wifi. They have free internet but no wifi. I need to tether with Archos off EVO and Vegas has 4G which I don't have yet. Thanks,

I was told PDA Net didn't do Android to Android but I heard there is some free wireless tether for non rooted phones but I don't know if it will work Archos to EVO. I replied to a post above and didn't finish reading where someone kind of asked the same thing. Sorry!

OFF TOPIC -- Phone Suggestion Related to G-Tablet

Suggestions Anyone????
I have two G-Tablets and am working with Android for the first time.
Lost a cell phone today and may have to get another. Have not gone to smart phones up to now. Interested in Android but still plan to use G-Tabs for most of my e-mail, etc. Verizon (used to be Alltel).
What would be a good phone to use with the G-Tablet. Something which is not too locked up and could be used alone or possible tether with tablet. Some of you know the possibilities better than I do.

I liked the feel of the Droid Incredible, though it is becoming dated. You really can't go wrong with the droid family (or so I hear, I'm on t-mobile), but if you want to wait I would pay attention to CES, some crazy phones being revealed.
Note on tethering, you need to do your homework. Some networks lock down their phones pretty good and make you pay. You can get around most with rooting, but just fyi.

If you wanna go cheap and not have a contract. Get a Droid 1 off EBay. Easy to hack and overclocked at 1 Ghz runs well.

Not sure but i think droid x is the newest thing???
I was thinking of getting one but am waiting till march.
I am with AT&T and they are locked down on the tethering thing..i hear Verizon lets you tether though?
Can someone verify as i may go verizon/droid (from my old iphone/AT&T set up) in the spring if thats the case.

I am a little disappointed. I thought since the Android phones have been so successful lately that quite a few people would be able to tell me what to watch for and what to avoid.
I expect to get a new phone, but haven't been involved with smartphone enough to know the advantages and disadvantages of the hardware and software.
Still would love to hear from other about current options?!?

well im on at&t and im using the captivate and i love it! its rooted with axuras rom on it presently. tethering is enabled and i used it all the time.
the phone is faster than my g tab... seems faster.
ive played with the droid x and i prefer the captivate... dad has the x, it seems odd in the hand and i dont like the physical buttons.. the soft buttons have grown on me.
but any of the top smart phones are close..

I found several Droid-type smartphones I liked -- but the plans that come with them wound up being too expensive and too limited to be practical for my use. Please I have a network of computers, a laptop, a netbook and two G-Tablets to get mail, download, etc. I just couldn't convince myself I had to have a smartphone!!
Wound up simply buying the wife a new phone she liked that had good visual features that will help with her visual handicap.
So all's well that ends well.

Is captivate worth it ?

Hey guys I have xperia x10 and interested in this phone. How is this phone? Or should I wait a few weeks to get Motorola atrix or nexus s.

I'd wait for the next round of phones that are coming out. I'd actually pass on the Atrix, simply because Motorola insists on giving it to us with an encrypted bootloader.

I would definitely not get a Captivate. given that new phones are coming out.
I would even tell myself back in September not to get a Captivate and wait for the phones that are coming out now, it's that bad.
Samsung basically stuck us with 2.1 (unless you do a custom ROM) and more or less once they sell you a phone kiss you goodbye for support for it etc.
Oh yeah, and if a phone has been known to have GPS issues, and you read an official Samsung tweet that their new update fixed GPS, don't believe it.
Stay away from anything Samsung.

Ya, I love this phone, its bad ass. But if you're looking to trade up, give it a little time and wait, this one age hardware wise pretty soon with the new ones coming out.

X10 is not a bad phone to hold on to until something you really like is released. Fyi - I love my captivate. Just disappointed in samsung. With custom roms this phone is great, imo.

Given the state of [smart]mobile devices today, what can you really say "I'm gonna wait for ____ phone to come out and be content"?
Sure, if you're in the market for a new device you can ALWAYS say "wait for the next round", but the truth of the matter is that there aren't a lot of devices that will be relevant for 10 months. This was one of the things I sat on for months prior to actually buying the Captivate.......mobile providers don't expect you to keep your device for the full 2 years.
I would definitely NOT get a Captivate unless you plan on rooting. That being said, if you don't want to root your phone, if you just plan on living an a stock environment, why don't you just get an iPhone? I mean, what is the point of having an open-source device if you never take advantage of it?
When I was running the stock Captivate it was horrible and I would've killed someone by now if I was waiting on the carrier or manufacturer to feed me (updates). Unfortunately, that is the world we live in. I must say that (I rooted the device within a week of my purchase), I wouldn't trade my Cap in for anything else right now, not even the Atrix. It is more than capable and this is my first Android device, so its not like I'm an experienced ROM loader. I don't have any issues with GPS, calls are fine, I can clock at over 1500 running Firebird2 and Cognition 2.3 (running FroYo). The only "issue" I have is some legacy mp3's won't play (that apparently no one else has this issue) and I'm rather disappointed in the quality of the speaker (after running a few sound amplifier apps).

Skip the Captivate. If you like the sony ericsson phones, wait for the x12's. They're supposed to be out in late March/early April and they look pretty nice.

When getting an Atrix, it's cheaper to get the phone + computer combo. But why get it if you already have a laptop or tablet? great specs but I would wait a little longer for the next wave of phones.

From what I have seen in researching the Atrix is that if you want the "laptop" dock you MUST pay for the Data Pro with Tether add-on. Otherwise you can pay the $499 just for the dock later on and will not be required to add tethering.
My problem with this setup and fee structure is that the dock is not a separate PC that uses the Atrix as an AP or external modem. You cannot use it without the Atrix docked because what you see on the screen is being generated by the phone. So what are you really tethering? Not the laptop since you are still browsing with the phone, just with an external monitor and keyboard... WTF? Do they think we are that stupid?

I'd pass on the captivate.....the atrix comes out tomorrow and the inspire is available now.....I'd get one of those before I'd get the captivate....the inspire is insanely fast and smooth and offers the Sense experience, which is great.....and the atrix is insanely powerful.

I have a love/hate relationship with my phone.
Stock ROM is "ancient" now - and AT&T has delayed any software updates for over 6 mos. now.
Plagued with hardware issues - random shutdowns, sleeping death, charge death, corrupt internal SD Cards, and of course a non-working GPS/Compass.
To make this phone work as intended you will "HAVE" to run a custom ROM to get all of the features - that should have worked out of the box mind you - to work properly.
And.. just a personal peeve - the plastic is slick - so I would suggest getting a case. Otherwise it's like holding a greased pig.
But on the positive - the screen is gorgeous, battery life is decent, and once you get it up and running its a great device.
So... uh no I wouldn't suggest getting a Captivate.

The stock Cap is not good at all. But those haven't rooted and flashed custom Roms are missing the boat. The custom ROMS are easy to flash and open up a whole new side to the Captivate!
Mine with the kick butt Paragon rom will run rings around an iphone any day. I've had them side by side.

The new Sonys will be even slower than the old Samsungs, and with less nice screens to boot.
Better camera, but who cares?
Get the Atrix (out tomorrow) or wait for the SGS2 -- Super AMOLED+ dual-core with (likely) unencrypted bootloader. Hopefully the US will get Tegra2 versions for better custom kernel development.

Yeah I think it's all backwards. The laptop dock can't be used without the Atrix which already makes it useless most of the time. That's why I was saying you might as well get a tablet. Why use a "laptop" running off a device that is suppose to be portable. That is what a real laptop is for.

Haha yeah just get a tablet / netbook / laptop instead of that atrix laptop dock.
Anyway, I think you should just wait 'till better phones are released. But if you can't, then yeah get the captivate but be prepared to void your warranty.

Honestly, like every one has said, it depends of if you plan to run stock or not. This is my first time to root a phone and I will never go back to stock again. My cappy is super fast and does everything I could ever want. My old 3g is comparable to a pager now.
But if you want to run stock, the captivate is DEFINATELY not for you. It took me about three days to decide that 2.1 just wouldn't cut it and start doing the research about rooting and flashing.
It is a very capable phone if you're willing to put some time into it.

Sub $100 tablets?

Hi everyone. I have a 4 year old who keeps taking my phone and my kids (his older brother and sister) ipod touches. He uses them to play games and go on youtube. I've been looking online for a cheap tablet for him to have and on craigslist there are a few for sale in my area for anywhere from $75-$100. I want to know if anyone has any experience with these cheaper android tabs. There's one by Sylvania and some others that just say ePad.
Does anyone have any experience with these and if so, do you think it will be ok for a 4 year old? Keep in mind, it doesn't have to be anything special. Just something that can play youtube and games like angry birds.
Any information is appreciated.

Well you'd probably be best googling the models and seeing if they are real. I had a friend who got a fake off ebay. They work alright. Not great for myself. But if they are a proper tablet I don't see you having any problem as long as its not a scam haha

Hmm just had a quick Google of the sylviana branded tablet you mentioned and from what I read it seems to function alright. Some are having problems but seems to be functional haha. Sorry if its what you already know

Being serious though, I did do some searching on google and with the information I got it figured it would be better to come ask the experts. I really dont care about the software that's installed on these tabs as long as they can be rooted and/or have access to the android market. Its just more important to me that they run decently. They are not very expensive but it's still money and I would like to know what I'm getting into.

I was recently setting up a home network for a co-worker and she "paid" me by giving me a White 7" Pandigital Novel "eReader". Its android based and from what I can tell it can be rooted and used as a low cost alternative to an Android tablet. They sell for as low as $100. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with my own since I just got a HTC Inspire 4G...
Guess I can try and hack it. I can let you know how well it takes being rooted.

Sorry for the delay but I got a little busy with school. I was able to sit down for a bit with the White Pan digital Novel and I must say I was impressed. Due to the extremely low cost and decent spec of this machine it has gotten a lot of love from developers. Its extremely easy to flash ROM's for root access (just place .ZIP on SDCARD, remove internal SD, boot to recovery, and flash it). The guys over at Slatedroid even put Cyanogenmod 6.x on it.
I tested a number of ROM's but most had weird issues. The Slatedriod Cyanogenmod 6.x ROM actually only ran crisp (for now) in landscape mode. Its a bit too weak to play games from Android Market and that's assuming the the ROM you choose has a working Market (most don't by default). They used a mod called the non-ugly hack to fix this I think. Another issue with a lot of these ROM's involved the wifi going into a infinite loop, repeatedly turning itself on and off. Despite the fact that I love Cyanogenmon on my Optimus V, I had to find another full time ROM.
That's when I stumbled across an Eclair-based ROM ported from teh popular Cruz Reader. It was awesome. Smooth in all view modes and even video ran great on the thing. I haven't attempted to OC the device yet, but I would assume it would only make it better. This ROM is rooted of course, and had a working Android Market (and Cruz Market) installed from the start. With this ROM the device becomes a comparable tablet, far exceeding the value placed on its tag. Just use regular apps to manage the power usage and overclock it with Set CPU or something and you'll have quite a machine for $50 something .
A big downside is that for an "eReader" the battery life was horrid, a little better than an android phone (and that's even with the stock ROM). You are going to have to hack this thing to get any decent performance out of it as the stock ROM is laggy. The rooting worked for fixing a lot of these issues.

Because Motorola's a jerk.
If you want to connect, the standard drivers should be good enough. Add the Android SDK if you want to poke around. If you care about media/linkage with wi-fi, try DoubleTwist's own AirSync ($4.99 unless you get it cracked somewhere).

I'm actually curious about whether it's a hardware limitation. Triumph manufacturer leaving something out the other phones have.
Thanks for the advice. I'm using double twist now, and will probably just pay for the air sync as it looks pretty good.
I'm a little intimidated by the SDK, but do want to poke, so may try it.
