Is the HD2 The best all around phone ever made?

I mean- it has the capabilities of 4G on TMO when released
dualboots android (perfectly stable and daily driver)
win mo 6.5 for buisness use/ more apps/ preference
top of the line specs... snapdragon, 4.3inch screen, dual led flash etc.
the only thing missing is an 8MP camera, but i would rather have a dualboot android than 3 more MPs.
This leads me to the question- is the HD2 the best all around phone out today?

I bought one the day they debuted and it was a pile of crap I went through three of them and didn't get one that didn't freeze on boot at least every other time, or delete all my information every other day. So no I do not believe it is the best all around phone, I would say thats the nexus one personally

It not only let you boot Android and WM, coming soon will boot WP7 too!
So it will be the first and only device booting 3 OS and specs are same or even better than newer devices.
I say yes: Leo is one of the best HTC devices ever made!

I believe it might be...I own an N1, G2, iphone 4, and soon to be Glacier and I use my HD2 the most...Android is now stable as ever...Gingerbread will be on it soon...this phone has been a monster since it dropped..!!

I would agree too, which is why I'm finding it so difficult to upgrade and part with now.
The HTC HD7 or HTC Desire HD are my current next thoughts (hopefully this month too), but can't say I'm excited about either of them and hoping for something a little more special to come out by anyone really (of course leaning more towards HTC as I have done so for over 8 years now).

Easily my favorite phone ever which is non-Android.

I was actually thinking about picking an HD2 up for the hell of it to throw Android on since I'm getting sick of the size of my HTC Aria...but I may switch from AT&T to Spring to get an Evo or Evo2.

I'm one of those guys who won't use a phone without a physical keyboard. I can't get used to screen-typing, I just don't like the feel of it. If the HD2 had a Pro variant with a slide-out, I'd own it already. I recognize it's an awesome phone though, just not for me.

+1. If there was a pro-version THEN it would be THE best phone ever to-date. I consider myself a VERY heavy user and the ROM I have seems to work like a charm.
The only reason I have to take the battery out is to turn it off as the on/off button has been reprogrammed!
Sadly, switching to a Dell Venue in two weeks... oh for the keyboard.
(Orb, AFAIK - and I could be wrong! - WinPho7 requires hardware mods for it to work on a HD2 so don't expect it)

So you're going the W7P route? The Dell Venue looks good, but not please with the 3.5mm jack on top (like silly iPhone thingys) and the keyboard looks like old school keyboards being far to small to actually use. Hmm... decisions... decisions?!

The jack on top means that when you dock it (which I'm guessing you will be able to) into a 3rd party desktop cradle you will still be able to listen to music - unlike my HD2's docks!
Don't know how the keys will feel.... I can always send it back if they are bad

I had a Rhodium before and must say I´m a real keyboard device person but got tired of the slowness of Rhodium, then got Leo and I´m still missing a real kb but in terms of speed there is no comparative.

I moved to T-Mo almost two weeks ago over from VZW. I had T-Mo before but coverage was far less back then.
I picked up the HD2 and really liked it but missed Android. I had several failed attempts to get Android to run. I then decided to separate my work and personal line with two phones so I grabbed the G2.
Now I re-flashed my HD2 to a Mega Leo Rom, was an Energy ROM. Then I made a second attempt at Android on a fresh reformatted sd and put on Mdeejay EVo Sense rom.
I was amazed how slick Android boots on HD2. Of Course there has been some bumps with a Flaky Data connection and it will not install Angry Birds from the Market. I was drawn to the HD2 because I had a Droid X and the larger screen was the attraction.
In the end the HD2 is a great device with all the options and have a Snapdragon processor makes it available to compete with current phones.

That maybe, but I've never used mine for playing music through a dock, I usually make my own custom docks and prefer to have the ability to pick up my phone from out of my pocket, with it being the right way up already and the jack underneath for easy usage generally, especially whilst seated on the TfL for example.
However, I'd image this is a 50/50 point, where half would prefer the jack on the bottom and vice versa.
CPW are bugging me weekly to upgrade to anything fro free and with just a 12 month contract, but stuck in what to go for. I'm only going to keep the phone for 3-4 months too and probably give it to my other half to use (whose a heavy Outlook user) so thinking a W7P, but I know she'd prefer Android with the newer HTC sense. I'm also not impressed enough with the Desire HD, so wondering if I should be waiting.
I just bought a Sony LiveView to go with an Android 2.0+ and can't find out if it will work with a W7P at all (too early to ask I guess), so thinking to go with a Desire HD with the Sony LiveView until a newer handset comes out that is much better (probably in a couple of months) and give the above to my Mrs to use, maybe?
I think I read that Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) needs 1.5Ghz to run well and in general smartphones are still some months away from that official speed.

OFF TOPIC -- Phone Suggestion Related to G-Tablet

Suggestions Anyone????
I have two G-Tablets and am working with Android for the first time.
Lost a cell phone today and may have to get another. Have not gone to smart phones up to now. Interested in Android but still plan to use G-Tabs for most of my e-mail, etc. Verizon (used to be Alltel).
What would be a good phone to use with the G-Tablet. Something which is not too locked up and could be used alone or possible tether with tablet. Some of you know the possibilities better than I do.

I liked the feel of the Droid Incredible, though it is becoming dated. You really can't go wrong with the droid family (or so I hear, I'm on t-mobile), but if you want to wait I would pay attention to CES, some crazy phones being revealed.
Note on tethering, you need to do your homework. Some networks lock down their phones pretty good and make you pay. You can get around most with rooting, but just fyi.

If you wanna go cheap and not have a contract. Get a Droid 1 off EBay. Easy to hack and overclocked at 1 Ghz runs well.

I was thinking of getting one but am waiting till march.
I am with AT&T and they are locked down on the tethering thing..i hear Verizon lets you tether though?
Can someone verify as i may go verizon/droid (from my old iphone/AT&T set up) in the spring if thats the case.

I am a little disappointed. I thought since the Android phones have been so successful lately that quite a few people would be able to tell me what to watch for and what to avoid.
I expect to get a new phone, but haven't been involved with smartphone enough to know the advantages and disadvantages of the hardware and software.

well im on at&t and im using the captivate and i love it! its rooted with axuras rom on it presently. tethering is enabled and i used it all the time.
the phone is faster than my g tab... seems faster.
ive played with the droid x and i prefer the captivate... dad has the x, it seems odd in the hand and i dont like the physical buttons.. the soft buttons have grown on me.
but any of the top smart phones are close..

I found several Droid-type smartphones I liked -- but the plans that come with them wound up being too expensive and too limited to be practical for my use. Please I have a network of computers, a laptop, a netbook and two G-Tablets to get mail, download, etc. I just couldn't convince myself I had to have a smartphone!!
Wound up simply buying the wife a new phone she liked that had good visual features that will help with her visual handicap.
So all's well that ends well.

Is captivate worth it ?

Hey guys I have xperia x10 and interested in this phone. How is this phone? Or should I wait a few weeks to get Motorola atrix or nexus s.

I'd wait for the next round of phones that are coming out. I'd actually pass on the Atrix, simply because Motorola insists on giving it to us with an encrypted bootloader.

I would definitely not get a Captivate. given that new phones are coming out.
I would even tell myself back in September not to get a Captivate and wait for the phones that are coming out now, it's that bad.
Samsung basically stuck us with 2.1 (unless you do a custom ROM) and more or less once they sell you a phone kiss you goodbye for support for it etc.
Oh yeah, and if a phone has been known to have GPS issues, and you read an official Samsung tweet that their new update fixed GPS, don't believe it.
Stay away from anything Samsung.

Ya, I love this phone, its bad ass. But if you're looking to trade up, give it a little time and wait, this one age hardware wise pretty soon with the new ones coming out.

X10 is not a bad phone to hold on to until something you really like is released. Fyi - I love my captivate. Just disappointed in samsung. With custom roms this phone is great, imo.

Given the state of [smart]mobile devices today, what can you really say "I'm gonna wait for ____ phone to come out and be content"?
Sure, if you're in the market for a new device you can ALWAYS say "wait for the next round", but the truth of the matter is that there aren't a lot of devices that will be relevant for 10 months. This was one of the things I sat on for months prior to actually buying the Captivate.......mobile providers don't expect you to keep your device for the full 2 years.
I would definitely NOT get a Captivate unless you plan on rooting. That being said, if you don't want to root your phone, if you just plan on living an a stock environment, why don't you just get an iPhone? I mean, what is the point of having an open-source device if you never take advantage of it?
When I was running the stock Captivate it was horrible and I would've killed someone by now if I was waiting on the carrier or manufacturer to feed me (updates). Unfortunately, that is the world we live in. I must say that (I rooted the device within a week of my purchase), I wouldn't trade my Cap in for anything else right now, not even the Atrix. It is more than capable and this is my first Android device, so its not like I'm an experienced ROM loader. I don't have any issues with GPS, calls are fine, I can clock at over 1500 running Firebird2 and Cognition 2.3 (running FroYo). The only "issue" I have is some legacy mp3's won't play (that apparently no one else has this issue) and I'm rather disappointed in the quality of the speaker (after running a few sound amplifier apps).

Skip the Captivate. If you like the sony ericsson phones, wait for the x12's. They're supposed to be out in late March/early April and they look pretty nice.

When getting an Atrix, it's cheaper to get the phone + computer combo. But why get it if you already have a laptop or tablet? great specs but I would wait a little longer for the next wave of phones.

From what I have seen in researching the Atrix is that if you want the "laptop" dock you MUST pay for the Data Pro with Tether add-on. Otherwise you can pay the $499 just for the dock later on and will not be required to add tethering.
My problem with this setup and fee structure is that the dock is not a separate PC that uses the Atrix as an AP or external modem. You cannot use it without the Atrix docked because what you see on the screen is being generated by the phone. So what are you really tethering? Not the laptop since you are still browsing with the phone, just with an external monitor and keyboard... WTF? Do they think we are that stupid?

I'd pass on the captivate.....the atrix comes out tomorrow and the inspire is available now.....I'd get one of those before I'd get the captivate....the inspire is insanely fast and smooth and offers the Sense experience, which is great.....and the atrix is insanely powerful.

I have a love/hate relationship with my phone.
Stock ROM is "ancient" now - and AT&T has delayed any software updates for over 6 mos. now.
Plagued with hardware issues - random shutdowns, sleeping death, charge death, corrupt internal SD Cards, and of course a non-working GPS/Compass.
To make this phone work as intended you will "HAVE" to run a custom ROM to get all of the features - that should have worked out of the box mind you - to work properly.
And.. just a personal peeve - the plastic is slick - so I would suggest getting a case. Otherwise it's like holding a greased pig.
But on the positive - the screen is gorgeous, battery life is decent, and once you get it up and running its a great device.
So... uh no I wouldn't suggest getting a Captivate.

The stock Cap is not good at all. But those haven't rooted and flashed custom Roms are missing the boat. The custom ROMS are easy to flash and open up a whole new side to the Captivate!
Mine with the kick butt Paragon rom will run rings around an iphone any day. I've had them side by side.

The new Sonys will be even slower than the old Samsungs, and with less nice screens to boot.
Better camera, but who cares?
Get the Atrix (out tomorrow) or wait for the SGS2 -- Super AMOLED+ dual-core with (likely) unencrypted bootloader. Hopefully the US will get Tegra2 versions for better custom kernel development.

Yeah I think it's all backwards. The laptop dock can't be used without the Atrix which already makes it useless most of the time. That's why I was saying you might as well get a tablet. Why use a "laptop" running off a device that is suppose to be portable. That is what a real laptop is for.

Haha yeah just get a tablet / netbook / laptop instead of that atrix laptop dock.
Anyway, I think you should just wait 'till better phones are released. But if you can't, then yeah get the captivate but be prepared to void your warranty.

Honestly, like every one has said, it depends of if you plan to run stock or not. This is my first time to root a phone and I will never go back to stock again. My cappy is super fast and does everything I could ever want. My old 3g is comparable to a pager now.
But if you want to run stock, the captivate is DEFINATELY not for you. It took me about three days to decide that 2.1 just wouldn't cut it and start doing the research about rooting and flashing.
It is a very capable phone if you're willing to put some time into it.

Alright so this is my first post but ive been downloading stuff off this site for a while. I started out with the htc mogul, then had touch pro, now have the touch pro 2. My contract with sprint has been done for over a year now, but have really been struggling choosing a new phone. I need to get new stuff now! I thought about the htc evo last year but didn't have 4g in the area at the time, but now i do so time to decide. So here are my tech options, please commit to help me decide:
iphone(with hotspot), ipad (wifi), mac book pro, iMac, Mac Pro, att dvr, apple tv
or
htc evo 3d (with hotspot), htc puccini(hope for wifi 3d version), asus g series labtop, and build two desktops one with gaming and one workstation, tivo, google tv
if I go with apple I will get att uverse and att wireless. - fear of data caps, throttling and crappy dvrs with limited simultaneous hd recording have kept me from going with the more simplistic layout with portable devices having great battery life that just always seem to work. Also, att having hspa+ as a backbone with lte seems too good to be true. (but job being sick doesn't inspire must confidence in apple, and living in the apple bubble is so limiting)
if i go with android/windows i will get sprint/time warner - i deal with time warner which will never upgrade to docsis 3.0 which is still slower then fiber, and sprint who has no overseas coverage, no lte, low coverage for when i travel inside the us, and have to listen to a retarded company talk about how they are going to have evo rev b, wimax, lte, and wimax 2 all at the same time because they have so much frequency stored from the nextel merger that they just sit on and use for crap like sprint id. I also don't have much confidence in clearwire or light squared really helping sprint.(plus i am worried about windows 8 being crap.)
In a perfect world I would live in a fios area, verizon wireless would use gsm instead of cmda, would have hspa+ and lte nationwide and would keep there unlimited data plans.
Also Im interested to see what happens with windows mango.
Does anyone have any idea what I should do!!!

I don't know if I'm posting in the wrong area or there is something else I need to add. Any thoughts, ideas, experiences or anything else your thinking would be helpful. I guess I should add that the only android phones I would buy are htc phones. I think they have great build quality, no more locked bootloader, and I actually like sense iu. I hate motorola because of blur and samsung phones just seem cheap to me. I used my phones mostly for texting then calling, gps, internet, games, using it with my slingbox, youtube, and sometimes taking pictures, i don't need a physical keyboard, but i do want a large screen and it to be thin. I'm think that anything without a dual core isn't going to work with ice cream sandwich (that's the only reason I wont buy the flyer/evo view)

Na thx for the response. I really haven't learned proper etiquette for the forums because I never use them I really use them. I'll search for something that I think I want and download it ever since I got my mogul. I just thought maybe some of you guys would have some insight. I've never been an apple fan, but just sick of some stuff on our side. I'm going to getting the evo 3d and hope to see a wifi 3d htc puccini with 64 gb of storage coming out before I break down and get the flyer, evo view or transformer (not that I care about 3d but if I have it on the evo I hope I could use the content I have there on my tablet). [Q] Looking for phone to work with Transformer

I have been here for a while now and am at the point where I have a great relationship with my transformer and my phone (although fussy at times).
I have a stock TF101 32GB with latest updates.
My phone is Omni2 with WM6.5 and I run WMwifiRouter using Bluetooth to tether for internet when I'm out (a little cumbersome, but once setup it works well).
Question: I am at my upgrade date (Verizon) and am thinking about upgrading my phone.
I'd like to be able to do the same tethering (obviously without paying the $30/mo. tether fee as I don't now) or better and I need a phone that can sync with my Outlook (just calendar, contacts, notes, etc) as I'll get my emails either on the phone or through the TF.
I have never rooted anything although I'm curious to give it a try after reading so many posts here.
Any thoughts are appreciated - the input is always great!

Well with a custom ROM you usually automatically get portable hotspots unlocked without the plan.

Last week I talked the guy that takes care of our cell phone plan at our company to switch me from a HTC Touch Pro II running WM6.5 (that I rooted so I could tether my Transformer) to a HTC EVO running Android 2.3.
I am SO greatfull to finally be on an Android phone!!!! Of course out of the box it is $30 a month for HotSpot support but tethering with a cable works well. I haven't tried a bluetooth tether yet. I will be rooting the EVO soon to get free hotspot support.
I really miss the slide out keyboard of the Touch Pro II but love the extra screen realestate on the EVO! I have very fat big fingers and have problems with touch screen typing. The big EVO was not as bad as I was expecting for texting because of its big screen but it is not nearly as good as a physical keyboard. I ordered a pocketable blue tooth keyboard for under $20 which I will try. Another caveat of the EVO is pretty dismal battery life... so I ordered a $65 3500ma battery to improve that although it will make the sleek phone quite a bit more clunky. I can't express how happy I am to finally be rid of Windows Mobile!!!! Our cell phone guy showed me the super new and cool WM7... and showed me how much better it is!!!! But that is what they said when they upgraded me from from a HTC Touch with WM6.0 to the Touch Pro II... I will be giving up support for Microsoft Lync but the HTC Microsoft exchange connector works well.
I really love the UI on the Android... SO MUCH better than the awful WM interface. The best part is being able to install most (android 2.3 vs 3.2) all my favorite android apps on my phone!
...and I am a .Net developer which kind of means Microsoft is crucial for putting food on my table!

I have used both wifi and BT tether with my Droid X and TF101. Both work well. However I have given up on tethering as the carriers are now tracking "free users" and there are rumors of some people getting either terminated, or $1k data usage bills. Verizon has never charged me for tethering, but to me it's not worth the risk anymore.

I always love these "BEWARE" post... I think it would be better to say, "USE Common Sense"!
If I am reading XDA post on my HTC Incredible or on my ASUS Transformer via WiFi Tether.. it is using the same amount of Bandwidth and Verizon is non-the-wiser.
It is folks that tether a PC and download Terra-bytes of Data from Peer-to-Peer sites like Piratebay that stand out like a Hore in church on Sunday.

I agree wholeheartedly!

I have my Transformer setup to sync with my works exchange. I have a G2x on Tmobile.
I use the built-in WiFi Tether, that Verizon loves to remove... but like was said, any custom rom will have that back in.
Just do your homework first on the tethering capabilities. Google's Galaxy Nexus is releasing on Verizon this month which will have straight Android and WiFi Tether should be intact regardless of Verizon's policies (it isn't straight android if Verizon screws with it). Plus the software and updates come from Google directly so you should be good. Being a developer phone, it'll get plenty of attention and updates are guaranteed.
Once it releases and I can read some hands on reviews, I'll probably trade up my work blackberry for it.

all android phones from I think 2.2 on came with hotspot so long as your phone isnt locked by the carrier. Most carriers remove it unless you pay for it so you either buy a sim free phone or flash a rom.

I struggled with my tablets tethering to my HTC Tilt2 running WinMo 6.5. Once I went with an Android HTC Inspire 4G things have always just worked fine. Go with the Android phone.
