[Q] Root - few questions - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I would like to ask you few questions about root. I unlocked bootloader, installed TWRP and SU. I want to get answer: if I must after all OTA updates go to TWRP and install SU once again to get root access? I donated for SuperUser Pro, but OTA survival mode doesn't work. So this is my question. The second is, if I must go to TWRP after all OTA updates and install Cerberus (Flashable ZIP for Android 4.4+, Hidden version)? Is there any option to make one and second APP survival OTA updates? And the third question is: if I must wipe delvik caches and caches when Im doing OTA update or manually update of stock ROM? Thanks for your time and advice!

Yes, you must install SuperSU again after each OTA update. No idea about Cerberus. Yes you should wipe cache and dalvik cache when flashing an update.

But I didn't Flash 44s manually, just autoupdated by OTA, what's then with dalvik cache and cache?
If I install some apps by twrp for example cerberus, change this app in Titanium backup as system app, will this secure app from delete in Next OTA update?

It doesn't matter how you updated, whether it's an OTA or a full ROM zip doesn't make a difference. If you make Cerberus a system app you probably have even less chance of it surviving.

Should I go then to TWRP no and wipe dalvik cache and cache, even when I update to 44s yesterday and everything is ok? if the answer is Yes, can u tell me what is the reason of doing this, why?

It's just standard practice to wipe cache and dalvik cache when flashing. If everything is ok though don't worry about it.

Anyway can I do it now and it wont make any errors?
Please tell if is any method to make Cerberus or order app installed from Zip by Twrp unwipeable from OTA update or Full wipe? to be hotele I installed cerberus by twrp, because it should be secured from wipe.

You can wipe your cache and dalvik cache at any time without any errors. The only drawback is each app has to optimise when you boot up, it only takes a minute or two though. I honestly have no idea about Cerberus though sorry.

Problem installing OTA 4.4.2 with custom recovery (TWRP) and encrypted phone

Hi everyone,
Las week the OTA update appeared in my phone. I tried to use the google-automatic procedure, but as I have my Nexus 5 rooted, the install was aborted as soon as the device was restarted.
I read the helpdesk thread, trying to update the device manually, but I can't be able to.
I have the 4.4 to 4.4.2 .zip file inside the downloads folder, I restart the device to recovery mode (I've installed TWRP), and after writing the decrypt password and mount the volume, When I try to apply the zip file
"/system/app/EmailGoogle.apk" has unexpected co
E: Error executing update binary in zip '/sdcar
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/Download/b3d1f30762
Updating partition details..
Note that the senteces is cut due to the lenght of the screen.
Before flashing, I go to mount option, and mount all the folder (system, firmware, sdcard)
Any ideas?
Now I'm thinking that when I rooted the device, I used ES File Explorer to delete some apps directly from /sys/apps, maybe is that the error, that some GApps has been removed from the device.
Thank you!
Yes Google has nicely written in app checks. If these apps are not present on check the update is aborted

So I have to reinstall the GApps package, and try to apply de update?

you modified the system apps.. what did you think was going to happen? everything would update fine?
this has been documented all over the forums. if you want the OTA, stop modifying your system or keep backups of what you modified.

Flashing gapps is not going to help you. You need to fastboot flash the system and boot image from the factory image

Flashing the system and boot images isn't starting from scratch... you can keep your userdata as long as you aren't using a custom ROM. Flashing those just gives you back a clean stock OS without any of your mods. No need to start from scratch. Should only take a couple minutes.
Also, your mods are the reason it failed in the first place, not because you were rooted. Rooting itself does not prevent OTA updates.

lollipop upgrade with factory 444 and twrp

Hello there,
I'm trying to update to lollipop without losing any data and I'm obviously unable to update my n5 via ota using twrp.
Is there any way I could use the ota? Best if without adb but i fear it would be the only way, isn't it?
Thanks everybody
There's no way to update using adb. Fastboot yes, adb no.
You could just flash the system and boot image thread in my signature

The one about updating.
Flashing system and boot doesn't wipe data. Flashing use data wipes data.
However, you may still need to wipe so take a titanium backup if you can
Hi
I updated using factory images without flashing userdata.IMG.
All data and apps where retained after update.
I am not facing any issues till now

Go back to stock recovery and sideload the OTA. You'll obviously need to use adb, but it should take you no more than maybe 5 minutes or even including sending the ota to device. No data loss for me on that one. Obviously, root was lost but that can be fixed.

Don't Worry, nothing is related to Ur settings/security

What do we get with this method?
I would like to see if we can remove the system ones, and gain some performance on that.

This Is nothing related to performance, it just removes encryption in Twrp Recovery. So we can see the Internal Storage in Twrp Recovery.
If u Want to Get Performance, Remove the ****ty Apps, which are present with System App Remover!
I can confirm that this method works, i didn't know that it was that simple.
Quick question, fellas;
Mine tarp is ported from P9. Is this is the only one recovery around for our device?
What about full tarp backup and format /system and /data? Is there any chance for brick? I've rooted with Magical, but because of the encryption (I cannot see internal memory and /data) I doesn't flash any modules. Thanks for the future info!

yeah, that is only recovery that works, you can brick device if you wipe /system. You should wipe /system only when you are doing full wipe (flashing new ROM). You can wipe /data but it will remove existing non-system apps. I never did twrp backup so you can try.
Does the twrp encryption removal survive ota updates and oreo beta update?

I don't think so because every .nb0 file that i flashed have encryption enabled. But after flashing new rom, you can immediately factory reset when you boot to rom to prevent losing data.

@MoHuToP
ok, i tried full twrp backup, but it stops on system image backup, it stoped around 60%. Backup have 11.5 GB (really huge isn't it).
DELETED
Ok, this method worked on Nougat with SuperSU because SuperSU patched fstab and file contexts successfully. It doesn't work on Oreo because Oreo now have plat_file_contexts and non_plat_file contexts. SuperSU needs to be updated to patch these files succesufully or we need to manually patch it so we can remove encryption.
Just to update this guide: This works only on Nougat. You need to have installed twrp and unlocked bootloader. Magisk doesn't work with this method because it doesn't patch fstab and file contents file so you need to uninstall it by going to Magisk app and clicking uninstall. After that go to TWRP, flash unSu > stock boot.img. You can flash Magisk after that with removed encryption.
Steps:
1. Flash SuperSU 2.79 stable with TWRP
2. Reboot your phone to system.
3. Reboot to TWRP again.
4. Choose Wipe > Swipe to Factory reset
5. Choose Wipe > Advanced > Internal Storage
Now you wiped Data, Cache, Dalvik cache and Internal Storage.
Your phone will have removed encryption now.
If you want Magisk, just flash unSu script > stock boot.img > Magisk
If you update your phone, it will encrypt your phone again so you need to repeat steps again.
I have redmi note 5 mec7s and i instal global stable 9.5.13.0

This is only for the NOKIA 3 - if you have tried this on a different device there could be the possibility of Bricking it, let's hope not.
I suggest going to your own device forum for assistance.
I have reformatted and factory resetted many times but the issue keeps coming back after I boot into system. To clarify, my steps were to reformat inside the wipe section, boot into recovery and check to see there's no encryption, and then boot back to system to install magisk with the manager app. I have tried adding a factory reset to that process, but that won't work either. My TWRP is 3.2.1-0 and I will try to update it and see if it works. Also, sorry if I reply slow.

Confused about root

This thread is not about "How do I install twrp" etc. But maybe this can help some of us.
I got a question. If I install twrp and root, am I still able to install system updates? For example, oxygen 5.1.6 comes out. How do I install it?
Have a nice day!

Probably not if it's rooted,in terms of it updating its self. Most likely someone will upload a zip file to flash over the old version though
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Download the full room zip file, install with TWRP just as you would with a custom rom. You will lose root so you would have to repeat that process. It may differ because of the a/b partitioning, but that is how it worked on op3t. As always, backup data. And also SDcard in case you can't decrypt. Also delete lock screen before flashing.

What if I have Xposed installed? Will the update go fine with that as long as I disable Substratum overlays and am flashing the full zip and then root afterwards? Or do I have to disable Xposed in Magisk or what? (I use systemless xposed)

What he means is delete the lock screen security so a pin/pattern/face unlock/figerprints... anything other then swipe to unlock your phone because if you have them set and you install a new ROM or flash the Stock ROM then it can't decrypt your phone data or recognize your security on the new ROM.
This also goes for doing a nandroid backup of any current ROM you have installed. Delete all security before booting into TWRP and backing up your ROM.

Regardless, it will still wipe system. Think of it as a complete factory reset. It will reinstall the full system and data of a brand new room.

Question Does installing twrp wipe my data?

I recently unlocked my bootloader and rooted my phone via magisk and this of course wiped my data and factory resetted it. I unfortunately forgot to install twrp before I setup and restore my phone's data. Now I want to install twrp but too lazy to resetup my phone again in case my data gets wiped again. So my question is does installing twrp wipe my data if my device has already unlocked the bootloader and rooted. Thanks in advance. (I have an international SM-A536E)
