Problem installing OTA 4.4.2 with custom recovery (TWRP) and encrypted phone - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
Las week the OTA update appeared in my phone. I tried to use the google-automatic procedure, but as I have my Nexus 5 rooted, the install was aborted as soon as the device was restarted.
I read the helpdesk thread, trying to update the device manually, but I can't be able to.
I have the 4.4 to 4.4.2 .zip file inside the downloads folder, I restart the device to recovery mode (I've installed TWRP), and after writing the decrypt password and mount the volume, When I try to apply the zip file
"/system/app/EmailGoogle.apk" has unexpected co
E: Error executing update binary in zip '/sdcar
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/Download/b3d1f30762
Updating partition details..
Note that the senteces is cut due to the lenght of the screen.
Before flashing, I go to mount option, and mount all the folder (system, firmware, sdcard)
Any ideas?
Now I'm thinking that when I rooted the device, I used ES File Explorer to delete some apps directly from /sys/apps, maybe is that the error, that some GApps has been removed from the device.
Thank you!

Yes Google has nicely written in app checks. If these apps are not present on check the update is aborted

So I have to reinstall the GApps package, and try to apply de update?

you modified the system apps.. what did you think was going to happen? everything would update fine?
this has been documented all over the forums. if you want the OTA, stop modifying your system or keep backups of what you modified.

Flashing gapps is not going to help you. You need to fastboot flash the system and boot image from the factory image

Flashing the system and boot images isn't starting from scratch... you can keep your userdata as long as you aren't using a custom ROM. Flashing those just gives you back a clean stock OS without any of your mods. No need to start from scratch. Should only take a couple minutes.
Also, your mods are the reason it failed in the first place, not because you were rooted. Rooting itself does not prevent OTA updates.

Rooted Nexus 5 won't install 4.4.3

My Nexus 5 is rooted. It downloaded the 4.4.3 update. It tries to restart and Team Win Recovery opens. I enter my password and it decrypts the data andI get the Team Win Recovery options. I don't see where to install the update from though?
I manually downloaded it from the link and I'm not seeing where Chrome put it either.
What am I missing? I'm certain I'm in the right folder which is downloads. It looks like it is only looking for a .zip file, but when I go to file viewer it looks like it downloaded a .tar.
How do I just tell the system to install the file it downloaded?
You need the OTA update. Sounds like you downloaded the full image. AP has the links.

ETA - I searched and found a link here. Is this what I need? http://www.droid-life.com/2014/06/03/download-android-4-4-3-ota-update/
Now my pc won't see the Nexus 5 and I tried downloading the Nexus 5 USB driver for windows 8 and it's saying it's not the right one.
Have a read of this thread:

I uninstalled Xposed from apps. I went to try to redownload the update, but it now says my phone is up to date but it's running 4.4.2
Now that I have xposed uninstalled, when the update is shown again (or hopefully I can force it since I'm sure it downloaded it and stored it somewhere) will it just run the update properly? Or is it still going to boot into team win and then not do anything?

[Q] So now that Lollipop is out...?

Hi everyone. I saw that Google released the factory image for the Nexus 5. I read on a lot of posts that the XDA members usually release a zip file that you just flash on your Nexus 5 through the recovery and it will install the bootanimation and the rom for you. I have no idea where that is. I want the final version of Lollipop and I want to flash it, not wait for the OTA update. Is there already a zip file like this or do I have to wait for some more time? Thank you.
Thread below you lol
Most of the flashing is described by google themselves: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
But do read more about it elsewhere and don't forget to backup everything before you flash, if your bootloader is locked then unlocking it in order to flash the image will wipe your phone.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
There's an OTA Zip over there on AndroidPolice.
You can also flash the Factory Image like most of us did.
It'll be like a brand new Nexus.

Have you seen any of the other options?
Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit, contains options to restore completely to stock, flashing recoveries, boot images, you name it.
It's like an organized version for people who don't do fastboot command typings through CMD.
You could always flash the factory image yourself by Google Instructions, or download the OTA file on Android Police. The choice is yours. :/

Not exactly.
Download the factory image, and if you want to use Wugfresh, you go to restore to stock, select your own downloaded factory image, insert the MD5 from the Google Page, and it'll guide you through the rest. It's safer to wipe before doing this, but either way, it does it by itself.

Ok so I am going to make this clear so I can understand better and not mess up( because I tend to do that A LOT)
*Before I do anything I have to factory reset my device.*
1. Download the factory image from here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
2. Open WugFresh and click on the "Flash Stock + Unroot" option.
3. I do not understand the MD5 part.
4. WugFresh will guide me through the rest.
P.S: I do want to be rooted when on Lollipop so I can just root again after I install Lollipop right?

The MD5 part, next to the " Download " button on the Google page. You see MD5:yadayadayada. In Wugfresh, it'll need the MD5 to confirm the zip.
You can root by installing a custom recovery, flashing SuperSU and a modified kernel.

AT&T 5.0 Update file

I managed to pull the 5.0 Lollipop OTA update file and load it to Android File Host.
Word of warning, should you try to use this file to update, you will likely lose root, possibly without the chance to root once complete or even ODIN back to 4.x. This is primarily for devs to use to try to make pre-rooted and custom ROMs with.
The link to the file is below:

@muniz_ri, @RockRatt, @iB4STiD and @Joe-Tech, I believe you guys may be interested in this.
May the odds ever be in our favor.

Because you flashed the archived cfg file. To flash the update you have to unpack the zip file and change the extension of the CFG file to ZIP. But anyway even this cfg fails to install, so don't try because i already did.
Update via adb or external sd card using stock recovery doesn't work !
Is there a way to flash it ???

You could try pushing the cfg file to /cache/fota, uninstall Safestrap, full unroot, reboot and then installing the update the standard way, but getting root afterward is iffy.

Thanks man, my situation is a little more complicated however since I have the i337m(Canadian S4) wasn't sure I'd be able to install this OTA in any way. Kind of came to the conclusion that I will have to wait for a custom Rom, unless my understanding of how this all works is wrong.
I will try but i already did full unroot . When flashing via recovery it says something like frameworkres-apk has unexpected content ... Standard way ? but it will tell me software update interrupted

Update received - flashing via TWRP?

Hey there fellow U11 Users,
I just received the update concerning 60fps HD-Video etc. I use TWRP so the update can't be installed by itself. So I have two questions:
A
Where do I find the update file. I looked around a lot but couldn't locate it.
B
Once found, can I just flash it with TWRP?
Thanks in advance!

list your steps your using to install the ota via twrp....personally, I let the system initiate the install (booted into OS) as if I was 100% stock, once twrp loads, it automatically installs except for the firmware.zip
more details here...
OK, I am a Noob to the HTC world. I am used to easy flashing/rooting/etc. on Nexus devices.
TWRP doesn't do anything after accepting the ota. When I try to install the OTA via TWRP I receive Error 7. I worked my way through a lot of guides here on XDA concerning manual OTA installing. One thing I tried was flashing back to stock recovery which I found in the firmware.zip of the OTA in bootloader mode. That failed also ("FAILED (remote: not allowed on PRODUCTION device).
Edit: The device has obviously an unlocked bootloader, s-on, rooted via magisk and is a DGLU device, software number 1.16.400.5
Are you on an Untouched System Image? Completely stock ROM? While it is great we can flash the OTA in TWRP, the system stills needs to be stock, and of course will still have to fastboot firmware.

Yes, everything is stock.
I managed to flash the stock recovery now. I didn't remember to use the download mode /sorry. Then Then I checked for the ota again, downloaded it and tried to apply but I landed in the stock recovery with the red exclamation mark and then nothing happened.

Same result unfortunately. TWRP hands out Error 7 and "system partition has unexpected contents" or something like that although I didn't do any tinkering with the stock rom. I flashed Magisk and did a backup before and that was all.

Only thing I would say is start fresh. Backup all the data for your apps first. Flash the RUU, Take the OTA and reinstall all your apps.

Thanks again - seems to have worked. It will be interesting to see which problems occur with the Android Oreo update which was announced till the end of the year by HTC
