Confused about root - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

This thread is not about "How do I install twrp" etc. But maybe this can help some of us.
I got a question. If I install twrp and root, am I still able to install system updates? For example, oxygen 5.1.6 comes out. How do I install it?
Have a nice day!

Probably not if it's rooted,in terms of it updating its self. Most likely someone will upload a zip file to flash over the old version though

Download the full room zip file, install with TWRP just as you would with a custom rom. You will lose root so you would have to repeat that process. It may differ because of the a/b partitioning, but that is how it worked on op3t. As always, backup data. And also SDcard in case you can't decrypt. Also delete lock screen before flashing.

What if I have Xposed installed? Will the update go fine with that as long as I disable Substratum overlays and am flashing the full zip and then root afterwards? Or do I have to disable Xposed in Magisk or what? (I use systemless xposed)

What he means is delete the lock screen security so a pin/pattern/face unlock/figerprints... anything other then swipe to unlock your phone because if you have them set and you install a new ROM or flash the Stock ROM then it can't decrypt your phone data or recognize your security on the new ROM.
This also goes for doing a nandroid backup of any current ROM you have installed. Delete all security before booting into TWRP and backing up your ROM.

Regardless, it will still wipe system. Think of it as a complete factory reset. It will reinstall the full system and data of a brand new room.

Hide root?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I suppose this is discussion.
Does anyone know a way to hide root from apps like Snapchat? None of the old methods seem to work, presumably because root works differently for this phone/Marshmallow, unless I'm making that up.
make sure you login to Snapchat before you root.

nope.. I had to reinstall the Rom and Login and then root the phone. After that you can take a backup of Snapchat with data using titanium pro
I think you can use suhide but i don't think it support nougat yet

Any chance there's a condensed version somewhere that doesn't make me go through 36 pages to find out what everyone's referencing?
See this is what I do. In twrp I click on the reboot tab then click on b I reset it will load in the b partition. I go to format advance options reset everything except your storage. Install ROM reinstall twrp reboot let screen load do your setup reboot to recovery make sure you are on partition b in reboot section go back install su zip. Reboot. Now restart phone to recovery click on reboot then hit partition a should lisd up on A partition dirty flash your rom.
Now partition A is stock no root. And partition B is rooted with su and I believe what changes you do on the rooted partition changes the non rooted partition since they share the same data. One is root one is not only down side is you need to restart to twrp to change partitions.
To me this us better the magisk. And any other options
Since magisk works but will fail at anytime and may take a couple restarts to get back up and running
Sorry about grammer hope you understand what I'm sayong

Yeah same boat here.. would love to venture out and learn how both partitions work.. would love to do what that user described as I know it is doable with having two partitions... but on another note, I saw a thread to users who were softbricking their device by misusing the reboot to different partition options.. so i have decided to stay away from this until a more compatible TWRP can evolve and it's not tax season
Experimental magisk works fine to hide root. There is a thread.

I ended up redoing my phone for the latest update. Decided to stay stock I did install TWRP then decided to run magisk it's not full root but does what I need.here is how I installed it.
1) Dirty or clean flash
2) Flash TWRP
3) Boot to System
4) Reboot to TWRP
5) Flash ElementalX kernel
6) Flash Magisk 11.6
7) Flash TWRP
8) Boot to System
9) reboot system again
10) open up magisk manager you should have magisk root
11) go to settings Enable Magisk Hide enable BusyBox enable systemless hosts
12) reboot phone open magisk manager you should now have magisk root and safety net green Android pay will work and so will apps like Snapchat pokemon go that direction modified systems.
Does magisk root allow root file management and/or Ad Away?

This Is nothing related to performance, it just removes encryption in Twrp Recovery. So we can see the Internal Storage in Twrp Recovery.
If u Want to Get Performance, Remove the ****ty Apps, which are present with System App Remover!
I can confirm that this method works, i didn't know that it was that simple.
Quick question, fellas;
Mine tarp is ported from P9. Is this is the only one recovery around for our device?
What about full tarp backup and format /system and /data? Is there any chance for brick? I've rooted with Magical, but because of the encryption (I cannot see internal memory and /data) I doesn't flash any modules. Thanks for the future info!

yeah, that is only recovery that works, you can brick device if you wipe /system. You should wipe /system only when you are doing full wipe (flashing new ROM). You can wipe /data but it will remove existing non-system apps. I never did twrp backup so you can try.
Does the twrp encryption removal survive ota updates and oreo beta update?

I don't think so because every .nb0 file that i flashed have encryption enabled. But after flashing new rom, you can immediately factory reset when you boot to rom to prevent losing data.

@MoHuToP
ok, i tried full twrp backup, but it stops on system image backup, it stoped around 60%. Backup have 11.5 GB (really huge isn't it).
DELETED
Ok, this method worked on Nougat with SuperSU because SuperSU patched fstab and file contexts successfully. It doesn't work on Oreo because Oreo now have plat_file_contexts and non_plat_file contexts. SuperSU needs to be updated to patch these files succesufully or we need to manually patch it so we can remove encryption.
Just to update this guide: This works only on Nougat. You need to have installed twrp and unlocked bootloader. Magisk doesn't work with this method because it doesn't patch fstab and file contents file so you need to uninstall it by going to Magisk app and clicking uninstall. After that go to TWRP, flash unSu > stock boot.img. You can flash Magisk after that with removed encryption.
Steps:
1. Flash SuperSU 2.79 stable with TWRP
2. Reboot your phone to system.
3. Reboot to TWRP again.
4. Choose Wipe > Swipe to Factory reset
5. Choose Wipe > Advanced > Internal Storage
Now you wiped Data, Cache, Dalvik cache and Internal Storage.
Your phone will have removed encryption now.
If you want Magisk, just flash unSu script > stock boot.img > Magisk
If you update your phone, it will encrypt your phone again so you need to repeat steps again.

This is only for the NOKIA 3 - if you have tried this on a different device there could be the possibility of Bricking it, let's hope not.
I suggest going to your own device forum for assistance.
I have reformatted and factory resetted many times but the issue keeps coming back after I boot into system. To clarify, my steps were to reformat inside the wipe section, boot into recovery and check to see there's no encryption, and then boot back to system to install magisk with the manager app. I have tried adding a factory reset to that process, but that won't work either. My TWRP is 3.2.1-0 and I will try to update it and see if it works. Also, sorry if I reply slow.

Get March OTA without having to re-install Magisk/TWRP

I read some stuff about doing an OTA update with Magisk (v18) on my Pixel 3 (Feb 2019), but I still have a few questions about doing it. I'd rather avoid re-installing TWRP and Magisk from recovery again, and I'd like to be able to do this all without my computer if possible (see planned process below).
1. From what I've read, I should be able to restore a stock boot image to the inactive boot partition (from within Magisk Manager) , then install the Update (both steps 1 and 2), then reinstall Magisk Manager to the inactive boot partition.. And then reboot, and I should have the update, and keep TWRP and Magisk, right? (just looking for confirmation of the process)
2. I never provided a stock image to Magisk when I installed it originally, and I don't have one right now. How do I extract the boot image from the stock image on the Android website?
3. And do I need to indicate to Magisk that I have a boot image, or will it ask me when I go in to restore non-root?
4. Are OTA updates cumulative, or do I need to update the stock boot image each update?
Thanks!

Although what you described works for some devices it won't on the pixel. To update and have twrp and root you'll need a pc. If the ota would flash when you have twrp and root, it won't, it would overwrite twrp and the patched boot image. So you're back to needing a pc to get twrp and install magisk.
For your other questions, if you extract the factory image you'll find another zip file in there. That's were the image files are and you need to extract that zip. And, ota's are cumulative so you don't need install previous ones. But specifically to the boot image, a previous months boot image may or may not be the same as the current one, etc.

I'm confused then. Isn't the method I described specifically for a phone with two boot partitions?
The instructions I am trying to reference:
Devices with A/B Partitions
Due to the fact that these devices have two separate partitions, it is possible to have the OTA installed to the inactive slot and have Magisk Manager to install Magisk onto the updated partition. The out-of-the-box OTA installation works seamlessly and Magisk can be preserved after the installation.
After restoring stock boot image, apply OTAs as you normally would (Settings → System → System Update).
Wait for the installation to be fully done (both step 1 and step 2 of the OTA), do not press the restart button!! Instead, go to (Magisk Manager → Install → Install to Inactive Slot) and install Magisk to the slot that the OTA engine just updated.
After installation is done, press the reboot button in Magisk Manager. Under-the-hood Magisk Manager forces your device to switch to the updated slot, bypassing any possible post-OTA verifications.
After the reboot, your device should be fully updated, and most importantly, Magisk is still installed to the updated system!

It is, but it doesn't work on the pixel. Google's security, probably the M chip, but I may be wrong, prevents it from working. In theory, magisk should be able to patch a boot image on your device and you shouldn't need the magisk zip but that doesn't work either. You can certainly try what you're describing but backup at least your data partition with twrp and have it off your device before you try. Get the contents of your internal sdcard to if you have stuff there you don't want to lose.
Most likely restoring the stock boot image and trying to install the ota will just not work, but you never know.

Thanks, I'll back up my files and try that.
Well, as far as I know twrp backups only work for data (with verity and all that). Always bootloop on a vendor or system restore. Back up your data a million times and go for it. Worse thing that happens is back to zero. Wait, you said no computer? Well, put it on a free cloud saving service, have your data backed up out there. Not advertizing for any service in particular, but backing up data is something everyone should be thinking about.
I am about to go for broke on this device for the 4th time. Non boot several times, flashing, flashing, building, flashing. I have the added benefit of figuring out if cell service works as the vendor.img always breaks it. Good times mate.
I might be missing something here, so please clarify if there is a way to "Get March OTA without having to re-install Magisk/TWRP", and how. Wondering about exactly that. Thank you.

What you have quoted works fine for me. I did both February and March update with this method on my P3 and no problems.
The only thing i noticed is that it takes more than 20 minutes to do step 2 of the instalation (optimizing apps)
But to be on the safe side, please backup.
Another thing: i don't have TWRP recovery, just Magisk root

There is no way to do so. Either side loading the OTA, or fastbooting the factory image, will still require you to install root and twrp. Which, really isn't a big deal at all :good:

Yes, i confirm. Before you start, please check if there is an update available. If there is, restore image, update, reinstall magisk and then reboot. If you reboot without reinstalling magisk, you will lose root. To install on the inactive slot, just click install in magisk manager and then you will be asked what method to use. If what i said is unclear, just requote me

Relock unroot pixel 2

So I unlocked my bootloader and rooted my pixel 2 successfully.
Now I get security warning on boot and can't run my mobile banking apps and a few other apps that tell me I can't use because I am unlocked rooted.. is any workaround for this?
Can I relock it and unroot somehow or is there I way to get these apps working with an unlocked rooted pixel 2 device. Thanks in advance
Would.like to keep it unlocked rooted an run these apps if at all possible but if. It possible I might have to fix this any assistance is appreciated
Hi! You could use magisk hide function, this is magisk inbuilt function for hidding root for selected apps.
And use safetynet fix too.
With this two things you should be able to use your apps.

Only way how to access with TWRP is disable all password protection (disable device encryption)... However, most of todays zips are magisk modules, it means that you have to "flash" it with magisk app.

I mean I know how to flash zips with magisk but will it flash a ROM fine and how do I wipe data cache etc before flashing a ROM via this method and out of twrp? A bit paranoid only have one phone don't wanna brick it haha have a good day
Sorry, only idea is, if you are using latest TWRP, and maybe, I am not sure, but I think, that TWRP is not supported on Android 11 ROMs... Sorry, I can't help with this, I didn't use TWRP for ages... I am really happy with stock pixel ROM and didn't own P2 anymore...

If you are rooted and/or have TWRP installed, then you need to restore the stock boot and/or recovery images before starting the update.
Then I will lose root access?
Not if you do it properly.
If you're using TWRP, then you'll have to restore the stock recovery.
If you're rooted then you can restore the stock boot using Magisk>Uninstall Magisk>Restore images but don't reboot or you'll lose root.
Then download and install the incremental update manually. Then install Magisk to the inactive slot and reboot.

1) Update software but DO NOT REBOOT
2) Open Magisk > tap install > tap Install to inactive slot > NOW reboot.
Make sure you disable any and all modules first. No need to uninstall, just disable them. Mainly just a precaution. Possibly remove security from the lockscreen too for good measure.
I lost root the other day actually forgetting to properly install Magisk before rebooting and now I have to buy a laptop just to root again.

Thanks @BillGoss, your instructions are perfect. Work like a charm.
Anyone have the stock firmware or stock image for 11.0.12.12.KB05AA? Trying to root it.

Use TWRP: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-rooting-oos-with-twrp.4327417/
since i did it manually and ended up with no boot.img backup from magisk, i had to manually extract boot.img from my last ota 11.0.11.11.KB05AA and reflash it through fastboot. then it let me update and i rerooted.
I get the notification but can't even try it because when i tap on it, it does nothing.

I managed to install the update, I used oxygen updater to download the update, used restore images option in magisk, installed update (DID NOT REBOOT), used install to inactive slot in magisk, then rebooted.
Seems like it all went well.

Do I have root and twrp, what should I restore? Only recovery? If so, you have maybe some stock for 11.0.11.11 kb05ba? I don't know why, but I only have a copy of the boot.

Use payload dumper to get a copy of the .11 recovery.

What don't you understand in post #5? You said you're rooted. So post #5 tells you what to do.

Sorry Bill, I get it all now. I just have to do as You wrote:
1) restore the stock boot using Magisk>Uninstall Magisk>Restore images but don't reboot or you'll lose root
2) install update manually, System update>Gear icon (local upgrade)
3) install Magisk to the inactive slot and reboot
Last question, where or how to download update manually?

Ah, well that's tricky if it's not available from OnePlus or the XDA rom thread. I believe Oxygen updater app will give you the rom also, but I've never used it.
Edit: just read your post again and I'm confused: what rom exactly are you looking for?
This thread is about ending up on 11.0.12.12.KB05AA
And if you're looking for that one you'll find it in https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/updates-thread.4188149/post-86165983
