[Q] Do you think the Gear 2 will work on Lollipop (Nexus 6) - Samsung Gear 2

I am considering purchasing a Nexus 6 when it becomes available on T-mobile but would really hate not being able to pair it with my Gear 2. I really have become addicted to it. I had been originally holding out for the Note Edge to replace my Note 3 but then was able to get one of the Nexus 9 tablets and I think that I am becoming a convert to "pure android"! Any thoughts or speculations would be appreciated. Hard facts would be even better.

I have both devices but have only paired my android wear watches so far with the N6. that being said if you are still looking for an answer let me know and we could do some testing.

Probably not... I don't even think you could get the gear to pair on non tw roms? It took awhile for them to port it to the n2 but that didn't have full compatability. The way I understood it is there more concerned with running it on the Samsung devices so it is left up to the devs and I don't think samsung has quite hit the mark on the smart watch market yet.

I have done some looking and I'm sure you can get it working at least 90% of all functionality

I have been using my gear 2 and my gear S for a while now. The nexus 6 is no different. There are a couple ways to go about it without using touch wiz. The gear 2 is actually much better considering that there is already a rooted custom rom out for it, and like i said, with that you will get about 95% functionality. I believe the weather app isnt 100% working and one more thing whixh i cant think of, but all the good stuff works perfect and even a few added features. Making/ recieving calls, ir blaster, watch faces, bluetooth, notifica.... all thats 100%. If you need any help or wan't to try it just pm me. I think this op may have found his answer already though.

Hi there. I sent you a PM about a similar request. Can you please check and let me know?

Did you guys actually figure out if it works with nexus 6?

Hi, someone managed to connect the gear 2 with nexus 6? I'm trying but, but I do not get results. If someone have a solution can post a guide?

Would appreciate it too

Please help!!
I have gone through all the methods in trying to connect my gear 2 to my nexus 6 and nothing will work!! Has anyone actually found a way?? I don't mind if some thing don't work, I just like the text and call features anyway.. Please respond to me, I love my watch and don't want to go over to a different one

any updates on this? will the samsung gear 1 OR the gear 2 watch work with the nexus 6 2014 version? thx

I tried following an XDA tread to connect Gear 2 Neo to Moto X 3 XT1575, with watch still on Tizen. No joy.
This method worked easily, but it will be an Android Wear watch: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-2/development/please-help-kernel-compiling-android-t2992953

The article also says Samsung will release an Android based smartwatch later this year... I'm not even going to attempt to understand that one. The only way I can see them doing that is if they run with Android Wear just to have a device in that space (you know, the Android faithful crowd).
Yeah, the Android Wear bit did confuse me as well. Kinda glad I'm not the only one that gets confused about these things. Lol.

How really? They anyways control more than 50% of Android smartphone market share. I am yet to find a reason why that would hurt them. How can locking customers in their own eco system be detrimental to their profits?
Well yes they have the smartphone market, but with this restriction they will not own the wearable market using Tizen. Wearable is the new fighting ground for devices and revenue.

Not sure if Google Nexus watch will support more then just Google phones (I assume it will be all Android) but it is to be announced in July at Google I/O. It looks a lot nicer then the Gear 2. At that point I have a feeling that the Gear 2 will get phased out if they don't open up to Android by then. Mainly because Google is a super power and they will find a way to push them out of the way. The next 2 months are vital to the GG2's existence outside of the Samsung ecosystem.
Here's a list of the latest Samsung devices compatible with the Gear 2:

What do you mean by opening up to Android? This is built on Tizen, everyone knows that already.
Guess you haven't checked Samsung's financial results lately. Samsung Electronics made 7.7 billion profit last Q. That's just the electronics division. They have countless other companies controlled by same family/chaebol.
For the life of me, I don't understand why everyone is so up in arms about the gear series only working with Samsung devices. If and when the iWatch is released everyone will praise them like sheep and no one will complain that it won't work with my note 3. Samsung sells MILLIONS more phones than apple yearly. So why does everyone have an issue with it? Also, since I'm ranting again, leave Android wear for Android. Meaning I don't want Android wear on my Gear 2 neo. Android wear is nothing more than a wearable notification system. Android wear on this device would be like buying a Ferrari and swappjng the motor for an LS7 for no other reason than you like corvettes. Android wear would cripple this awesomely capable device. OK its late.... I'm done. Don't mind me. ... I'm sleepy

Nice rant. I'm with you brother. I'm a big samsung guy and love my gear. We don't know what Apple will bring to the table because they keep putting watches and phones "iPhone 6" off for release. They're so far behind the curve is ridiculous. Now. That being said the one thing you said could be wrong. The initial rumors are apple's Iwatch will run on all devices. That's what the rumors say. It would be in their best interest to do that and try and steal away Android and windows phone customers. We'll see. Maybe the iwatch will be released before the gear 3.. lol

If Apple actually allows their watch to be used with android devices.... It will signal the death of Apple. The last time they said something would work with all devices they meant 3gs and newer. Lol. But really, if it does, Steve Jobs will rise from the dead and smack Jony Ive so damn hard that his face will swell into the Google.com logo of the day.

I followed the instructions to a T, even started from a fresh CloudyFlex 2.1 ROM install - Media Controller appears on my Gear 2 and I'm able to adjust the volume from it and see the currently playing track, but it won't let me pause/play or skip tracks. I'm using Play Music.

Wife's Gear 2 came in the mail, so I decided to try it myself. I was able to do take photo's and sync them to my phone and make phone calls. I didn't try the notifications or replying to them.
I'd definitely want one, but not to sure about it. If it had the Nike+ running app on it, then I'd definitely get it.

Gear 2 Tizen to Android

So a quick question here. Since we have a firmware dump for the Gear 2 would we not have the ability to port the original Gear firmware to the Gear 2? We should be able to verify the structure of the device correct? I do believe both devices have really close specs other than the CPU upgrade and I believe the Btooth is different between the 2 devices. Thanks.

In the spirit of digging up an old thread. ... Android Wear on my Gear 2 would be awesome if it would run well.
+$50 for fully functional Android Wear with a respectable battery (At least one day...)
Lets see if we can get someone who knows how to do this intrested!
Seeing samsung announce a Gear with Wear so soon is a bit disheartening for me. I got the first Gear, returned it because the Gear 2 was going to be announced. Im happy with the upgrades but dissapointed because I feel like development is going to die as soon as the Moto 360 and other Android Wear devices are launched later this year.

s3 to n5?

I've had my tmo s3 for a little more than a year now and it's still going strong and I like it but I'm thinking of possibly buying a nexus 5. Looking at used ones but also considering possibly getting it brand new from Google. Have any of you upgraded from the s3 to this? Would it be m much of an upgrade? Just wait for another 6 months for the nexus 6?
Aside from possibly the camera...and no SD slot.....yes, a huge upgrade. IMHO.
I just came from my GS3 to the N5 and the difference is night and day. Even with a KitKat rom on my GS3 it isnt nearly as fast and smooth as the N5.
Not to mention N5 roms are nearly bug free.
You do lose the SD card as mentioned above, the camera (I think) is a little better quality.
Battery is way better.
Thanks for the replies. I was thinking I'd wait for the lg g3 but it seems like the g2 is difficult to unlock and root, at least when it has 4.4. I have been using KitKat on my s3 for so long I don't think I could be happy with anything lower. The s3 is good but after I've been using my n7 for a while the Samsung feels slow.

You won't be disappointed with the upgrade. Went from i747 to N5 and everything is so much smoother. Keep your s3 with a proven rom as a backup but don't expect to jump back to it once you feel the difference in speed and reliability of the nexus 5.

Please don't troll.
"better" is subjective. Samsung cannot make a touchwiz device that doesn't lag. All of us who have had Galaxy devices know this. The s5 is no exception. The OP did not mention the S5. If he wanted an S5, he would have posted this in the S5 forum. Lets try to stay on topic please.
For sure they are two different "worlds".
If you seek speed of light and high rate of updates then you should go, for sure, of N5

That's exactly why I was looking at the n5 and not the s5. I found a 32gb black nexus for $315 on swappa so it's on its way now. I know the s5 has better stats on paper but it would also ruin any warranty if I rooted it ( samsungs counter). I like experimenting with different roms and I haven't used tpuchwiz for months. I know the n5 isn't exactly new but it's new enough that it should get the next update version of andriod.
I came from the Note 2, which is similar spec to the S3, and here’s what I miss the most:
-Wolfson DAC: With DAC Direct, audio sounded far superior on Note 2 (the reason audiophiles love Samsung phones)
-APT-X Bluetooth Codec: Again, sounds far superior to standard BT audio
-Phase Detection Auto Focus: For fast focus lock. N5 uses contrast detection, which is why it’s slow to focus
-Camera voice commands: Handy when taking photos of the kids / pets etc
-Expandable Storage: I would have liked the option to use my own SD cards, however I have bought a USB OTG SD card reader so this point is moot now
Apart from that I couldn’t be happier with the N5, and am actually happy to be rid of all Samsung’s gimmicks and so called “features”.
So if you haven’t already, go for it!
Another question, I've read that google slightly changed the n5 after complaints about the speaker, is there any way to figure out if my used phone I just bought is one of the originals or a modified one? I know there's nothing I can do either way, just curious.

Nope, its complete BS. Some have little holes some have big holes. Some have softer soft touch, some have yellower displays. It's not a revision. It is not a concious decision.

Good post though, hit the nail on the head regarding tolerance, human error, and everything else really.

It's hard to know if it'll be future compatible with S7 or Note 6 as those devices don't actually exist in a format we can be sure of. Only rumors.
That being said, this VR supports far more than the One device Innovator edition so unless they change port layout or physical size, there's no reason why it couldn't work.

Yeah, I covered that.
"this VR supports far more than the One device Innovator edition"
There were multiple "one device" Innovator editions, but the Consumer version supports Note5, S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+, and cheaper. It has multiple size settings, which is a GREAT sign for possible future compatibility.
It's a pretty decent device and well worth it at the price.
Just because you'll jump in the future, doesn't mean it's not worth it right now.

It's definitely there. It bothers some folks, not others. Doesn't bother me much, I got used to it.
On a side note:
Some of the apps (same ones from Innovator edition) still give me motion sickness. I guess I'm just doomed to never run those apps.
You can tell it's there. I still love it though. Netflix is awesome using it. Watched a video yesterday of the blue angels flying at was amazing.
Edit. VR fine. It was the Arter kernel on my N5 Loco rom. Switched kernels to skyhigh and works perfect although a few random reboots on phone when using but not many. It's tolerable until an update comes out. But for now I'm running stock everything unrooted because the VR rocks that way and I've been showing it to many peeps over Christmas. Tomorrow I'll re-rom and kernel it back.
bump any updates on this?
The only rom/kernel that works with VR is Stock Modified. However I found that it causes issues with bluetooth and after a while my moto 360 stops getting notifications.
Wish roms could support VR, would make things easier
Darthstalker's Rom seems to work well with the latest Sky High
I've hard Breakdown also works, but haven't tested it.. Hopefully Tek is working on it for his Rom, but I doubt it.

I want to get the Gear S3 Frontier. I have a Honor 8 phone. I use Google Messenger and Google Allo. Do both of these apps work with the Gear S3, can I send and receive text messages etc. I don't want to use the stock Samsung app.

Replying works too but requires installing android wear and pairing it with an emulator.

It is for android wear watches so doesn't do much for gear, it only enables replying to the messages even if you are not using samsung's message app. You can just use SMSGear instead of doing this actually. https://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-s3/themes/opensource-sms-application-gear-s3-t3557263
Ahh only sms... I thought whatsapp etc also...

I will probably skip the Samsung watch and grab a wear watch instead like the Lg Style. After some reading Samsung watches are great if you have a Samsung phone, but if you do not then it's hit or miss with most apps and some don't work at all. And of course the apps I use are the ones that apparently don't work at all with Samsung. Shame really because I think the Samsung watch looks almost like the $1000 Tag Heuer smart watch. If they would have only used wear software instead of there own.

(I'm not sure where you're at but) Check Best Buy. The Samsung Rep told me you can return the S3 within a 15-day period after buying. I asked the rep at a Best Buy (at a location with a Samsung gallery -- not all locations have) to take the S3 out of Store Demo Mode so I can pair it with my old Galaxy Note 2 but he said he can't. He mentioned I can buy and return it within 15 days if I'm not happy with it. If you're going to do this, see if you can involve a manager. Sometimes reps just say whatever they want to make a sale. But who knows. He could be telling the truth.

Best buy's return policy is 15 days unless otherwise stated. The only reason I know that is they will price match anything you buy within the return period as well. I had bought a TV and on the 15th day it dropped by about $500. Called them up and they refunded that amount. The info on price matching and return policy can be found easily on their website.
So I checked out the S3 at T-Mobile store. Never mind its way to big and heavy. Also it didn't work with half the stuff I wanted to do on my Pixel. I think this watch is great if you have a Samsung phone, but if it's a non Samsung phone then expect half the stuff not to work right. I think I will pick up the new LG Sport watch instead...

If you're concerned about sizes, I think the LG Sport Watch is bigger but along with its size, you get more screen and a higher resolution. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough room to improve on battery life for the LG even for its bigger size. I'm on the morning of Day 3 and I still have 62% battery power (granted I turn it off after 9pm and turn it back on at 6am). Lots of trade-offs. But I agree. You get a better experience with the Gear S3 if you have a Galaxy phone. Have you seen this article? http://www.androidcentral.com/lg-watch-sport-vs-samsung-gear-s3
EDIT: One of the best things I love about the S3 is Samsung Pay (way better than Android Pay). Never again do I pull my wallet out (except when I occasionally buy wine -- I still get carded LOL!)

That hasn't been my experience at all. I have a Moto G4 and my wife has a Huawei phone and the S3 works very well with either. I've paired it separately with both plus an older Moto E I and everything works without a hitch. I know there have been some hitches with the IPhone but I wouldn't touch one of those if my life depended on it so I can't comment there.
There isn't a huge difference in the S3 user experience with a Samsung phone versus other branded Android phones. Regardless, if integration with the Google ecosystem is paramount, an AW watch will fulfill those duties better than the S3. But the LG Sport has a few serious shortcomings compared to the S3: inferior battery life, fixed wristband (a comfort and customization issue), and lack of MST. The LG Sport is the best AW 2.0 watch on the market only because it's the only one on the market right now. I too am waiting, I just chose to do it while using the S3 in the interim.
