This is kinda weird coming from a guy who has been a Samsung guy since the Captivate back in the day. I've had the OG Note, and I currently have a Note II.
I had the chance to get my hands on both the Note 3 and the Moto X side-by-side, and I have to say, I was more impressed with the Moto X overall.
Don't get me wrong though, I think the Note 3 is a fantastic device, but there were a couple of negatives that stood out to me and desuaded my purchase impulse.
1. Performance: I was VERY surprised by this one. I would have thought that with the Snapgradon 800 and 3GB of RAM, this device shouldn't even flinsh when it came to performance. Sadly, even my current Note II felt faster and smoother in a lot of instances. Web browsing, using Maps, and various other UI animations, etc, all felt way more jittery than I would have thought was acceptable. The Moto X on the other hand, could seriously give an iDevice a run for its money as far as real-world preformance and fluidity is concerned, just to give you an idea.
2. The new S-pen: Never mind all the new features; the new pen itself feels kinda flimsy compared to the previous generation. Seriously, I could feel the plastic of the whole pen flex under the pressure of just pressing the button.
3. Region locking: This is just the final straw for me. I travel a LOT, so this is a total deal breaker if I can't swap SIM cards from other regions. I don't know why Samsung decided to do this, but it was a bad move for this customer...
Honestly, in the brief time I had with both devices, the one thing that I will be sad about not having is that screen on the Note 3; it's simply a wonder to behold.
The Moto X has a great screen too, but it's no Note 3 by any stretch.
Anyway, that's all! Maybe the region locking can be sorted out by the dev community here, and hopefully the performance issues can be fixed with updates. Until then, my money isn't going to Samsung...
That's all!
Wow, I had completely different experience. I felt the note 3 was so much faster then the 2. Also Google maps recalculated do fast it almost mind boggling. One con I swear maps has a different annoying voice. But I might be crazy.

I haven't actually got my hands on a Note 3 yet, but I've used the Moto X side by side a Nexus 4, and I was disappointed in the Moto X.. and I find the Note 2 to handle better than the Nexus 4 (at least for what I get to do during the 30 minute play sessions). And so.. transitively, since the general consensus is that the Note 3 is a step up over the Note 2, I feel like the Note 3 would be a much more favorable option. But hey, it's your phone. As long as you're happy, everything is all good!

My wife is using a Moto X on Verizon and I am on a TMO Note 3. Both are excellent phones and they suit both of our uses. Note 3 feels faster than the Moto X in my opinion, but not by much. My wife will probably say the opposite. Good choice with the Moto X. I can't see someone regretting that decision.
I'm going from note 2 to moto x as well. If the moto customizations with voice don't blow me away then I'll return for a note 3.

The AT&T store I went to last weekend had display units of both phones. I'm not sure if both were necessarily available for sale, but that wasn't the reason for going in there anyway; I just wanted to get some hands-on time with them side-by-side.

After all my complications with the Droid Razr I refuse to ever use Motorola again. Terrible terrible terrible experience. I have sent my phone in for repair/warranty more than 10x. The non-removable battery means it will go bad quickly and once it does, your kinda screwed. Hate my Droid Razr with a passion. Hopefully they've corrected their mistakes in the Moto X, but as far as I'm concerned I cant trust them to do it.
My wife is rocking the s4, and had the s3 before that. I've always been jealous of how well her phones worked so I decided to get the Note 3 . So this will be my first Samsung device, and hopefully I will have a good experience with it.
Good luck to ya, old chap. Don't see why you felt the need to tell us, but good luck anyhow.

True another big reason i didnt or havent bought an htc one. and also no sdcard slot kills it too. but phone felt really nice. if i didnt like 1080p and higher ppi screens and didnt care about size or sdcard and battery it would be a great device. moto was so close to having a home run. that phone with a 5" 1080p screen, removable battery and sdcard, and the dev support with unlocked bootloader etc etc phone would be a huge seller. i think that should be the next nexus phone.

After having 2 nexus devices I'm kind of rooted/rom'd out and want to enjoy the stock experience. I'm having trouble choosing between the Moto X and the Nexus 5. Is there no reason in getting the nexus 5 being that I'm not interested in rooting it?
The Nexus 5 looks to be a very good phone even stock and at a cheaper price that the Moto X. You can also still root and still use the stock rom.
won't really matter if you root or not. it's your choice. you can still get the n5 even if you don't plan on rooting it. i've done full stock for several nexus units already and they all work pretty well for me. i still get the occasional itch though.
I am watching this phone although I chose the Moto X. LG G2 has some issues ala microphone. Recording , speaker phone to name a few. This is basically a lg g2 with a lesser camera so. I want to see what's up in the first 6 months.
I have a Nexus 4 and used to rum cm10.2 but it was so unstable and never quite ran well. As of 2 months ago i reverted back to stock rom bootloader locked and it was th best thing ive done. The phone runs so much more stable and smoother and im also getting better battery life. It also seems quicker.
For me it was a waste of time rooting when the stock experience it what i think better.
When i get my Nexus 5 its staying stock
Cool to see I won't be the only one.

I was running stock rooted on my N4 for a while but ultimately ended up throwing PA on there. I'm sure i'll end up doing the same with my 5 if I decide to buy it.

I would go nexus 5. moto x is already several months old and support on the device will not last like it will for n5. Additionally if you decide to root down the road when support stops (for either device) the n5 will still have developer support.
I'll likely root it but stay stock. I'll probably also run Ubuntu Touch on it from time to time

I can answer your question with another question:
Are you interested in running latest Android version and getting latest updates first? As well as being able to get updates 2 years from now if you still have the device.
Would like pentaband 3G and LTE on your device?
A device with better camera, higher screen resolution, better specification making it more future proof than the Moto X, all this while being cheaper and required no contract?

Here you go, ads blocking without root: https://adblockplus.org/en/android
It might cause some app to not work though.
Stock 4.4 rom and Franco kernel will be a heavenly combo, best you`ll ever get and also with color- and soundcontrol :good: AdAaway will get rid of those annoying ads.
To your original question, the Nexus 5 would be the better choice.
1) Cheaper price.
2) Immediate / first OTA updates.
3) Better screen resolution - 1080p vs 720p
4) Processor - snapdragon 800 vs snapdragon S4 Pro.
Honestly I can't think of one thing the Moto X has over the Nexus 5. You want stock? Why not stock 4.4? What about any new Android releases? Gotta get a ported AOSP version if you want it right away...
Nexus 5 should be the best stock device of all time, no bloatware, faster updates etc.
Everything above is the reason I want the Nexus 5. Beside the fact that its minimally beautiful. I do have Verizon but my Nexus 4 on Aio. Verizon does have the best service for my location and the only working service at my home.
I truly believe that the moto x will receive fairly quick updates. Do I think they will be available the same day google releases an update.....no, very soon thereafter, yes. :good:
Now, which is the better device, the moto x or the Nexus 5, Nexus 5. The only reason I would say buy the moto x over the Nexus 5 is because you want a smaller form factor, which some people prefer.
I had the nexus 4 for awhile and switched over to the iphone 5 once it did 3g on my carrier. I played with almost all higher end android phones rooting/ custom roms and was really always wanting more. I believe I went through probably 15-20 phones selling and trading . Grew very tired of it!!! I've had the iphone 5 for the past 6-7 months purchased from apple and I am happy with it. Nexus 5 I am looking to purchase but most likely wont be tinkering with roms or anything, I hope not.
Wife will get the iphone 5 , which has apple warranty on it and Ill probably sell her iphone 4s unlocked with a mophie case for $300 or so. So hopefully Ill enjoy the nexus 5 and the android os again.
So I decided as soon as it went live today....I ordered the Nexus 5. Super excited. Hopefully won't be disappointed.
I think I'm the only one that bought one of these phones. Haha.

I bought it because of the 300 trade in. I did not really much of it but it meant I could get 300 for my Moto X 2013 which was my backup phone. This way I was able to get a newer backup phone for cheap. I like the phone though. Honestly the only thing I really really wish it had was an AMOLED screen instead of the LCD. Otherwise it's a pretty good mid range performer for me.

Hry, about that, although the Moto X 2014 is more beautiful, in terms of specs its way worse than this. Only the processor is better and the screen is amoled (and I think amoled is bad because it burns after some use). Apart from that this phone is better. It doesn't have all gestures like wave to wake up but it wakes up as soon as you pick it. Also they removed the gyroscope but it doesn't make a difference unless you use photosphere or Google cardboard. I would pick the droid maxx 2. Good luck
Ooh, I didn't realize the gyros cope thing until now. Not a deal breaker but, that was a feature I enjoyed using on my original moto X. I've got everything loaded on the max right now and we'll try it out for a few days. I think the battery life and turbocharging is going to outweigh the gyroscope

I bought one because I'm stuck on Verizon and I was returning to Android and didn't want to spend a lot of money. My trade paid for half the cost, so not too bad.
I've just yesterday decided to throw a Data only T-Mobile SIM into 'ye olden Maxx 2 and have been Binge-ing Netflix, and Hulu on it. LOL.

Thanks for the heads up although I think I'm done buying phones for awhile! I would like to go this route when I buy my next phone though because leaving the US carriers out of the update loop seems like a good plan.
Wow it's dead in here. Getting bored with my G3 so I just snagged a used Maxx 2 since I enjoyed my original Maxx and the Turbo. Looks like a nice midrange device that can hold me over for a few months.
True, looks like very few people bought this device.
The reasons why I bought it:
1. CDMA - Verizon phones are compatible with the CDMA network in my country;
2. GSM/WCDMA/3G support to travel internationally;
3. Good LTE-bands coverage, especially Band 20. You can find very few phones which pack CDMA/GSM/LTE (Band 20).
Looks like it is a single-SIM phone - according to the location of the pins inside the sim-card slot.
Has anyone tried XT1564 - does it have the Verizon bloatware?
Something has happened to mine. I decided to factory reset and start fresh. The T-Mobile SIM wont work in it anymore. When I search for available networks, it locates T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T but when I select T-Mobile, it says registering on network but never does. Same SIM I had used in it before. Tried Global as well as LTE/GSM/UMTS network mode. Manually added T-Mobile APN settings as well. No dice. Hmmm

Looks very tempting to me. I've always liked the Moto X line and the added features it brings. I kind of like the JBL module too. I'm going to keep my eye on this phone until the end of the year and make a decision. It's probably going to be between the Z, OnePlus 3, and the new Nexus.

---------- Post added at 03:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:34 PM ----------
As for what I think of the Z:
They need a much larger selection of modules if they want to make an impact on the market, and they need to continue making phones that support these mods.
I don't plan on buying one right now, simply because I'm in college and don't have money to throw at new phones... but if this Droid Turbo (Verizon's "special" Moto Maxx) breaks, the Moto Z is high on the list. I've always had Motorola phones and I haven't had any reason to look elsewhere yet
Im really thinking about it. I currently have an LG g3, Samsung galaxy s4 and Samsung galaxy s5. The g3 have good memory ram management, but it has an IPS screen (which is good: no image burn like in amoled; and bad: no as bright as Amoled screen). The s4 is okay but ram managment is not as good as LG G3, the same with the S5, however, both have Super amoled screen ( which is good: very bright screen; and bad: it might develop burn in image if not careful). sooo the moto z/z force has 4 GB or Ram , and have Amoled screen. It also have sd card slot, and it might not only be limited to those modules. The LG G5 was my first option, but this one seems to be less prone to have built quality issues, unlike LG g5. but i'm also having my eye on Project Google Ara, but that one will be for 2017. Still, i think the modular design of Moto Z/Z force is one that can be truly called a modular phone. there is no need to remove battery (it is impossible anyway) to use the modules. in addition to that good amount of mAh it comes with by default (at least the Z force. So chances are 70% that i will buy this one over the g5

Aaah yess. I mean. I could use it without root but having root always makes it a lot better. Although, the modularity part would be a little tricky if custom roms are released. Something tells me that there is more to it than just "plug and play" or in this case, attatch. But... I think they will release the tools (or make it open to the public so they can come up with ideas for new modules) this will make it easier i think
Price
This might be a rumor but if this rumor happens then... Well, It will be a better deal than the LG G5. According to this website: https://motog3.com/moto-z-moto-z-force-moto-mods/
The price for the Moto Z will be $499 dollars, and for the Moto Z Force $549. If this happens to be true, then I like the way they raised the price just a couple of bucks more for the Z force unlike other devices which raise up to $200 bucks more for a better version let's say. Anyway, I've posted a picture of what it says.
I hope those prices hold, but on Verizon with Droid slapped on them I kind of doubt it.

As someone who loved their moto x pure edition, but shattered the phone on space mountain (disneyland)... I've been holding out for the new moto x announcement. Instead we got the Moto Z announced in it's place, while it seems cool... it seems to sacrifice quite a few features I really enjoyed and I'm concerned about losing. Particularly the audio jack, I'm also worried about the longevity of the hold of these magnetic mod plates... I'm in a bit of a bind, I can't really keep using my friend's old bind, but i'm unsure if I'll want the moto Z at this point (although it looks pretty awesome). If the audio jack is a problem for you, and you loved the Pure Edition so much, I'd say get it again now since you do get the free smartwatch. However keep in mind that it's the Sport, which is the worst of their smartwatches, and the Pure Edition is near it's end of life, especially considering Moto's recent history...

Says 625 for moto z.. I know it's a droid edition but I wonder if unlock will be cheaper..

Only way I'll get the Moto Z Force (or any new phone) is if it ends up being able to unlock the bootloader and root, which can take time. Until that happens, I'll keep using the Note 4 Developer Edition.
Get 'em while they're hot.

Giving the PH-1 another shot, as my HTC U11 is starting to have all sorts of issues. Had the PH-1 pre-ordered and received the first batch last summer, but had issues with it. A lot of light bleed on the screen and awful touch responsivness were the main problems.
Couldn't pass up on this deal, especially the Halo Grey version with its matte backing. I know Essential has come a long way since last summer/early fall, so I'm excited about it. I came very close to buying it last week for over $500 on Amazon.
Now to do research on unlocking the bootloader and rooting it.
For UK users buying from Amazon .com that has to be deal of the century

Are these still bad with T-Mobile?
I just ordered one myself. I'm on the ZTE Axon 7 and really don't need a phone until it blows up but that deal is too good to pass up. Now I'm just mentally trying to justify it vs. waiting for the next generation stuff.
I guess I get bumped up from a Snapdragon 820 to 835, bluetooth 4.2 to 5, Android P developer previews, and a bunch of other people probably bought one today as well.
What an awesome deal! Tempted to buy another lol
I'm using it on T-Mobile and I have no issues. Love my PH-1. Running rooted Android P Dev preview

T-Mobile issues
I just ordered one of these for $250, because why not at that price.
Does anyone have any links to read about the issues with T-Mobile ? I read briefly that there is some configuration fix or did this come with one of the updates?
Ordered here in UK this is too good to pass great deal.
Just ordered one as well. What is a good provider to use this on in New England? Right now I have Google Fi. I know this isn't one of the "compatible" devices, but it *should* work on some gsm bands with it until I find a better company to use.
Just ordered one as an upgrade from my T-Mo G6. The G6 is starting to have Bleed issues on the display and the 32GB is just not cutting it for me. I'm really nervous from some of the posts I've read. This phone seems to be really polarizing with some loving and some hating. Here goes nothing!
yeap I was looking two weeks ago at swappa... and I almost but one on a good condition and change my mind.... now I wake up today booom!!! i got it on Halo Gray.... well hello everyone i will try to be a regular here
Just bought this = Halo Gray.
Q1. Does the Gcmod5 camera work well on the PH-1? Actually, does any replacement camera app outperform the stock camera app?
Q2. I got the 360 camera attachment. Is it a keeper or return?
Q3. How is the mono speaker?
Q4. Will this phone get additional Android updates?
My current device is the HTC U11+. It runs well, great battery, screen, color, sound. However, this Essential deal is too good to pass up. I have missed stock Android, security updates and this PH-1 hardware is beautiful.
I have also ordered the PH-1, got it in Halo Grey (best color for me) , I hope it will runs like a charm.
Btw, I saw someone asking about GCam, I'm also curious if there any apk available or a mod

Just ordered one....looking to upgrade from my trusty old Nexus 6p
Grabbed one... Been looking for a deal on a decent compact phone and couldn't pass this up! I actually ordered a Moto X4 on Sunday and will likely be sending it back as I think the Essential Phone will trump the Moto X4

Android updates are fats, very fast you get monthly security updates same day as Google phones, the Google cam mode works ,I was using both camera apps ,but since release the camera app from essential has been updated many times improving and adding new features
360 cam is very good and the tiny planet feature of the app means you can do some cool.stuff with it .
Honestly you won't be disappointed,it is a gorgeous phone and feels great in hand ,moon black is a bit slippy so I put a Matt black dbrand on mine
