Getting a Moto X instead... - Galaxy Note 3 General

This is kinda weird coming from a guy who has been a Samsung guy since the Captivate back in the day. I've had the OG Note, and I currently have a Note II.
I had the chance to get my hands on both the Note 3 and the Moto X side-by-side, and I have to say, I was more impressed with the Moto X overall.
Don't get me wrong though, I think the Note 3 is a fantastic device, but there were a couple of negatives that stood out to me and desuaded my purchase impulse.
1. Performance: I was VERY surprised by this one. I would have thought that with the Snapgradon 800 and 3GB of RAM, this device shouldn't even flinsh when it came to performance. Sadly, even my current Note II felt faster and smoother in a lot of instances. Web browsing, using Maps, and various other UI animations, etc, all felt way more jittery than I would have thought was acceptable. The Moto X on the other hand, could seriously give an iDevice a run for its money as far as real-world preformance and fluidity is concerned, just to give you an idea.
2. The new S-pen: Never mind all the new features; the new pen itself feels kinda flimsy compared to the previous generation. Seriously, I could feel the plastic of the whole pen flex under the pressure of just pressing the button.
3. Region locking: This is just the final straw for me. I travel a LOT, so this is a total deal breaker if I can't swap SIM cards from other regions. I don't know why Samsung decided to do this, but it was a bad move for this customer...
Honestly, in the brief time I had with both devices, the one thing that I will be sad about not having is that screen on the Note 3; it's simply a wonder to behold.
The Moto X has a great screen too, but it's no Note 3 by any stretch.
Anyway, that's all! Maybe the region locking can be sorted out by the dev community here, and hopefully the performance issues can be fixed with updates. Until then, my money isn't going to Samsung...
That's all!

Wow, I had completely different experience. I felt the note 3 was so much faster then the 2. Also Google maps recalculated do fast it almost mind boggling. One con I swear maps has a different annoying voice. But I might be crazy.

Region lock only happens for grey market phones. If you activate a note 3 in the country it was purchased the region lock never happens.

I haven't actually got my hands on a Note 3 yet, but I've used the Moto X side by side a Nexus 4, and I was disappointed in the Moto X.. and I find the Note 2 to handle better than the Nexus 4 (at least for what I get to do during the 30 minute play sessions). And so.. transitively, since the general consensus is that the Note 3 is a step up over the Note 2, I feel like the Note 3 would be a much more favorable option. But hey, it's your phone. As long as you're happy, everything is all good!

My wife is using a Moto X on Verizon and I am on a TMO Note 3. Both are excellent phones and they suit both of our uses. Note 3 feels faster than the Moto X in my opinion, but not by much. My wife will probably say the opposite. Good choice with the Moto X. I can't see someone regretting that decision.

I'm going from note 2 to moto x as well. If the moto customizations with voice don't blow me away then I'll return for a note 3.

The AT&T store I went to last weekend had display units of both phones. I'm not sure if both were necessarily available for sale, but that wasn't the reason for going in there anyway; I just wanted to get some hands-on time with them side-by-side.

After all my complications with the Droid Razr I refuse to ever use Motorola again. Terrible terrible terrible experience. I have sent my phone in for repair/warranty more than 10x. The non-removable battery means it will go bad quickly and once it does, your kinda screwed. Hate my Droid Razr with a passion. Hopefully they've corrected their mistakes in the Moto X, but as far as I'm concerned I cant trust them to do it.
My wife is rocking the s4, and had the s3 before that. I've always been jealous of how well her phones worked so I decided to get the Note 3 . So this will be my first Samsung device, and hopefully I will have a good experience with it.

Good luck to ya, old chap. Don't see why you felt the need to tell us, but good luck anyhow.

True another big reason i didnt or havent bought an htc one. and also no sdcard slot kills it too. but phone felt really nice. if i didnt like 1080p and higher ppi screens and didnt care about size or sdcard and battery it would be a great device. moto was so close to having a home run. that phone with a 5" 1080p screen, removable battery and sdcard, and the dev support with unlocked bootloader etc etc phone would be a huge seller. i think that should be the next nexus phone.

Might trade my SGS3 for an LG Intuition, bad idea?

So im in the talks of trading my SGS3 for an Intuition. I'm curious to see how that phone would be on a daily basis. But im afraid I'll regret the decision. I know this forum will be based. But im reaching out to my fellow XDA addicts for their input.
Let me know what you think about it.

I've really been looking at doing the same. It's hard to get decent opinions because most people say it's bad but have never even seen one irl. One of the big problems I have is it will probably never see a custom rom besides root. It's also a rather old phone but it can still play pretty much any game and handle anything. I played with one at verizon and it had some lag but I'm not sure if it's the launcher or not. Kinda bugs me also because I know I'll lose the stylus and it's just a normal stylus you can buy off amazon for like $2 (nothing like a s pen). I will probably buy one to try it, I can see myself possibly loving it or totally hating it, I doubt there a a middle ground.

If you're into getting a bigger phone, I would hold for the Galaxy Note II. It's coming to Verizon, and is likely to see custom roms. I highly doubt the Intuition will see much. The phone seems solid, but LG has lately had problems with keeping up on Android updates (I'm looking at you, Spectrum). Samsung, while not perfect, shows more promise in rolling out updates.

Yea I'm really thinking about the note 2 as well but the format of the intuition makes it awesome for emails, Internet, pdfs ect. The only only place it lacks is watching videos, and it's S3 cpu which is like 2 years old already I just ask myself how often do I watch videos on my phone, not a ton how often do I email look up things on the Web? Probably 200+ times a day.
I probably still won't get it but I'd love to see them make one (and release it in the us) with better specs and fore thought across the board and I'd be on it

THANK YOU! At least one person said it.... If you cannot do anything to a phone besides rooting it then it won't be in my hands.... I have to have full control so I can optimize every aspect of my phone cause we all know the manufacturers won't and Verizon DEFINITELY won't! The LG is a pretty giant leap back so I would wait for the Note 2 or the possibility of another Nexus device but def do not go backwards... (Just my opinion)
If you don't really care about ever using a custom ROM then go ahead. Otherwise I believe the SGS3 has it beat in every category.
I wouldn't. The single biggest problem with the phone is the aspect ratio. Every single review points out how awkward the phone is with a 4:3 ratio.
I would NOT do it.
If you want a phablet, wait for the Note 2. I highly doubt many devs will work on the intuition. You'd get better development off the droid x2.

Well, looks like people will have to reconsider seeing as the next Nexus is made by LG.
Samsung Galaxy S3
Intuition has terrible battery life and an even worse camera. I do like the design but there's absolutely no way I'd trade my S3 for one. I'm also waiting on a phablet worthy of ditching my S3. Going to be the Note II probably. Not to mention Samsung has a ton of great tablet/s-pen features that can't be found elsewhere. One last thing is the stylus has no built in holder. You have to carry it separately. Deal breaker right there for me.

Thinking of replacing my samsung note 2

I have sold my s3 and got a note 2 since december from last year.
The reason i bought such a huge phone was for the s pen. It helped me in college for taking notes, but then ive bought an ipad which can work for the same purpose, except without the s pen.
Nowadays im just not finding the note 2 practical for everyday usage. Its just too big.
So now im Thinking of selling it and either buying either an s4, htc one or xperia z.
Can someone give me feedback on those phones?
I love the design of sony phones, but i also cant live without the features of samsung phones

I can't think of any reason the s4 wouldn't be a good choice.
I would recommend the HTC one. Reason why is because you're coming from a note 2 which is pretty much the same as an S4 minus a couple of features and the 1080p display. The Xperia Z would be a very bad choice as it has sub par battery life, lags and the display is really a letdown. The HTC one stands out with is fantastic display, it's flawless performance, the amazing boomsound, the phone looks beautiful and dev support is excellent.
At the end of the day everything is a matter of preference but do yourself a favor, whatever phone you choose make sure it's between the S4 or HTC one, the XZ is really not that good. I wanted to also recommend the optimus G pro but you said you want something smaller. Cheers.

Neither the HTC One or S4. If you are thinking of getting a phone for long term, you would be better of waiting for a Snapdragon 800 CPU phone to be released soon instead of getting a Snapdragon 600 S4 or One.
i'll earn money to buy it
Do you require the use of a MicroSD? If the answer is yes, then you can forget about the HTC One. (Say all you want about how it has 64GB internal storage. MTP is so horrendously slow and unstable that copying a 3GB Bluray file simply doesn't work.)
If you can, wait for September. The IFA will be hosted early september, and many will be announing their new phones there. Most are switching to an S800, which is more powerful.
If you can't wait, I'd suggest going with the S4.
Im not really in a big hurry, but what new flag ships are rumored to be shown?
Since you really like S Pen feature. Galaxy S4 should be your choice.

Galaxy Note 3 is disappointing

I "upgraded" from a Nexus 4 to the Note 3 because on paper it sounded fantastic (especially the full HD screen). However, the performance of the device is extremely disappointing. There's a real disconnect between swiping the screen and the software responding. A perfect example of this is in the browser(s) scrolling department. I find that it's worse on Chrome that it is with the other browser. Sometimes in mobile rendered pages scrolling if fine. But most of the time, it's very jittery (it's not fluid and pixel perfect smooth). Very bad for the end-user experience.
Another example: the official Engadget app. Scrolling is extremely choppy on the Note 3. I have found that going into the Developer Mode options and turning on "Force GPU rendering" makes scrolling in Engadget very smooth (although it still stutters).
I understand that what I'm describing will be very subjective, and there'll be many "no lag here" type posts. Just writing about my experience with the Galaxy Note 3. Personally, I find it extremely disappointing. I will never buy another Samsung product.
I'm loving every part of my note 3 so far and find everything smooth and responsive. Battery life has been excellent and the screen is a wonder. But it's all opinions and there will never be a phone that is universally liked by every single person.
Hopefully things will improve for you and you start to enjoy using this wonderful device

Yes, that's typical to Samsung, even with 3GB of RAM it's lags more than devices with 2 GB of RAM and that bunch of bloatware makes it work slower and plus KNOX that you can't to restore if it's changes to 0x1 so it's means you will loose your warranty.
What can I say, Samsung is getting worse and worse, I have my first and the last Samsung phone, because with that their stupid policy I won't buy their phones, and I think they will lose their position some day.
Do you have the S800 or Exynos model?

I'm assuming they mean "Smart Stay, Smart Pause" etc.
I own Sony xperia x ultra and I confirm that it is is much smoother than Note 3 even that has only 2 GO of RAM. But the note has a charm and other things that made a little lag just not important: sound quality, s planner, smart stay, camera quality. At the moment the Note is the best SMART PHONE on the market. ( I do own S4 and XZU). My dream device is Note 3 with IP67.

I checked out the Note 3 at an AT&T corporate store, and as I posted in one of my threads, it isn't very impressive. Note 1 feels much more premium compared to the Note 3.
There is something about Note 3 which screams "cheap toy!!" - maybe it's the build quality or the weight. Even the software isn't as snappy as it should be. I had to press the "Return"/"Back" and the "Menu" button three or four times sometimes to get it to work. I was very disappointed to see all this mediocrity in a flagship Samsung phone in 2013.
The LG G2 is what we call snappy and in my opinion (and Techno Buffalo's), it is the best Android phone ever in terms of speed and responsiveness. If the LG G2 had a stylus, I would drop the plan to buy the Note 3 in a second. Playing with the Note 3 for about 20 mins unexpectedly made me wonder if it was an upgrade at all over my Note 1, let alone a Note 2, and that's disappointing.

The LG G2 is what we call snappy and in my opinion (and Techno Buffalo's), it is the best Android phone ever in terms of speed and responsiveness. If the LG G2 had a stylus, I would drop the plan to buy the Note 3 in a second. Playing with the Note 3 for about 20 mins unexpectedly made me wonder if it was an upgrade at all over my Note 1, let alone a Note 2, and that's disappointing.

i hate people like this. if you cant feel a difference in a note 1 and note 2 to the note 3 then get out. first off notes in the stores are running all kinds of crap and retail mode most likely and yeah why are you considering buying then if it isnt any different then note 1?????????

My Note 3 is perfect in every respect. Have had HTC One and Note 2 already so I can compare the Note 3 to other devices. Never had any lag.

Both of you, especially you oneandroidnut, read my post carefully and don't let go until you fully understand what I said, and then we should be okay.

It's the usual flood of trolls that accompanies all newely released phones. They usually own a device or two from a company whose a competitor of the newely released phone. Nothing new really.

I have owned the Note 1 2 3 8 and 10
1. The Note 3 feels like a quality device. The software of the Note 3 is in a different league to the Note 1.

Thanks for the Best Buy tip. I was hoping that they'd do that again this year. I'll probably get the S5 when it rolls out and I was thinking about the smart watch 2. I realize that the bootloaders will be locked down, but I'm sure that folks here can get us root (always have before), and that's what I usually just end up doing anyway......haven't really messed with roms much since my Captivate.
My last day with the S4, My LG G2, comes in tomorrow, 350$ for a brand new G2, I call it a steal. It'll have pretty much the same internals as the S5 as far as I can tell, Snapdragon 800, 2GB of RAM, etc, The only place where I see the S5 perhaps having a better spec is if it has 3GB, of RAM, but That's something I can live with for a 500$ savings on My end. The KnockON feature on the G2 Seems killer. Seems like the phone I Should've gotten all along. The lag with the S4 is a pain in the butt.

I've gotten the moto x. Probably one of the best phones I've ever owned. Don't look at it as a downgrade and you can pick these phones up for a steal. In real life situations this has got to be the perfect phone. When you see something quick and want to snap a picture with wrist twist you can open up your camera and snap a picture without having to turn on the phone all in 2 seconds. Active notifications shows who texted you or emails, etc plus the time. Touch less control works well when your driving and have to call or text someone without taking your eye off the road plus a bonus active assist that will also read your text messages to you while your driving. Not much bloatware bogging down this device with stock android. I chose this over the nexus 5.
MOTO X Slapped
I don't personally own a moto X, but my company uses them (I ordered and set them up) and I'm inclined to agree with you. The moto X, regardless of its specs, is one of the best phones out there. It's fast, has a beautiful screen, great battery life and great build quality. Though there are a few little quirks that aren't that big a deal, but that little phone is comparable to my S4 or Note 2 (both running cm11) in overall usability

Post with respect, this is a helpful community, hope we all learn from this stuff in here.
wish we knew when we can pre-order, or buy the S5. since the HTC ONE M8 is a no go for me
I have heard 2 different dates. April 11th and April 22nd.

Looking to upgrade - but no way, no how will I spend my hard earned cash on a device (Verizon) that in all probability won't be able to run anything other than Touchwiz. Holding out to see what LG and others have to offer this summer -

Obviously not staying with VZN - the handwriting is on the wall - will probably go with Tmobile or Sprint. Don't really utilize the features that TW brings to the table, so not having the ability to use AOSP Roms is a deal breaker. Might also have to give up some cell coverage for flashing freedom, but well worth the trade off for me.
I have the htc one m8 and the new gs5, I prefer the htc one m8 and my Lg g2 Samsung dropped the ball on this phone

Not so much S5 vs M8, but VZN vs other carriers that do not lock down their phones. I first and foremost will be changing to either Tmobile or Sprint. Call me spoiled, but after years of being able to flash whatever Rom suits my fancy, I will not (and at this point) do not have to give that up. Will I have to sacrifice some coverage to get that - yes, but a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
After that, I will probably wait until the batch of phones (LG g3, Sony Z2, Nexus 6, Oppo Find 7 etc) hit the market. Not impressed enough with the improvements that either the S5 or M8 have brought (processors, display, camera) vs their predecessors to change over right now. I'll stick to my loki exploitable S4, and come summer or early fall, say good-bye to both Samsung and VZN!
Verizon has definitely dropped the ball here!! Bad! They took away 2 of the s5 main features! But I still like the s5 over the m8. I have both. I will say the boomsound is unbeatable, yet everything else goes to the s5 in my book. Battery life is almost twice as good, camera seems better, overall feel in the hand is better. The m8 is just too heavy. Both are high quality phones for sure but I personally think the s5 wins, in spite of big red being the evil step parent beating us with the nearest available object in public. ....

Which 2 features are missing? The quick glance (I think that's what it was called) that I could do on S4 was nice. Where you wave your hand over the front sensors to see time and notifications while it's asleep, seems to be gone. I really liked that. The S5 does feel good in hand. Really enjoying the dimpled back. Feels nice. The display is lovely has well. As we all have our own opinions, I enjoy the M8 a bit more. I love Sense.. Now. I'm a vanilla Android guy and was really shocked I liked sense and blink feed. Shocked lol. I actually find it easier to hold in one hand than S5, by a bit. I can type easily on the M8, not as easily on the S5. Camera, that has me confused. Love the M8 features and UI. For me, quality is better in certain situations and better on the S5 in situations. Obviously, with the S5, you can crop to your hearts content and that's a big advantage. Either way, IMO, both are great devices and as Android users, we're lucky to have these options.

Verizon took out the download boost and PayPal fingerprint scanner, I'm hoping for root and some flashable zips to get them back from big red, but I do really like the phone regardless
