I know that plenty have used towelroot successfully on the wifi, but i just cant root my LTE without losing all cell/data capabilities (wifi still works). I have seen this issue brought up, but cant find any actual feedback.
My main objective is to use something like CPU Tuner to fine tune the processor. I have had a lot of success improving battery life, and the shield tablet really needs it! The CPU control offered stock doesnt even give the options i would use. I would much rather set universal rules than fiddle with optimizing each and every app (dont have to worry about Tapped Out though..).
All of that is a moot point without cell service though, as i use my mobile device as my internet access.
I have the LTE model rooted with towelroot and I haven't had any issue with connectivity. Connected to at&t no problem. I'm on the latest ota. Does your connectivity come back after removing root?
I rooted my LTE with Towelroot and have zero problems with connectivity.

I had trouble finding information on this variant of Droid, so I thought I'd share my own findings now that I have it working the way I wanted.
I ordered a brand new, Verizon Wireless locked version of this phone off eBay. I'm in Canada, so I was unable to activate the phone as it requests after the "touch the droid" screen. The nearest Verizon tower is very far away.
I found out (maybe this is common knowledge about Android phones, my searches were probably too specific) that I could bypass that activation by touching each corner of the screen.
I used SuperOneClick to root the phone, which went completely painlessly; seems like a great tool. This isn't a necessary step to unlock it, I just wanted it rooted.
I gave $30 USD and my phone's IMEI to CellUnlocker, and they got a working unlock code to me in 2 days. Some people have had problems unlocking the phone, but it worked immediately for me, maybe it's luck.
I haven't tried a brand unlock, since I don't plan on using my phone in the states soon!
I followed these instructions to improve my signal strength, but I haven't thoroughly tested it.
I am now using the phone without a hitch on Telus' network, data included. I had to set up an APN for them, with information from here.
I applied a fix mentioned by Kositch here to prevent Google Maps from crashing my phone. The min free KBytes setting was 2845 by default, as reported by the sysctl config *root* tool. It seems to have worked.
Unfortunately my battery doesnt last more than a day with moderate use. I've setup setcpu to underclock the processor based on battery life in hopes that it helps. It's hard to tell if it does or not without any kind of benchmarking. Based on the built-in battery usage app, I would say it probably does not affect my battery life much to underclock the phone, it is mostly the display that drains it.
One bug I have had is that my Internet connection will stop working after the phone has been out of use for some time or in airplane mode. A restart of the phone seems to solve this every time, though I'd rather not have to do that.
I am having a nasty bug when using my D2G on Telus - every time I dial out, immediately call drops and then reconnects in background. Very annoying and prevents you from dialing conference bridges automatically. I have tried with both normal sim that came with my Telus milestone at the time as well as a fresh new microsim and experienced this in both cases. On Fido and Rogers it is fine. Haven't tested on Bell as I don't have active account with them.

My phone does the same, but it does not cause me problems as I only make ordinary calls. It's certainly a bit weird.

My service is with Boost Mobile. I have been trying to root the Kyocera Hydro phone I have so I can turn on the wifi hotspot and tethering. I was told by a factory rep and Amazon that this phone can do that job. Boost Mobile says it can't. Boost Mobile says the only 2 phones that will do wifi hotspot and tethering on thair service is the Samsung Galaxy s2 and the HTC Veo. I can't afford ether one new. I was also told by a person online that has been pointing me to online articles about rooting phones. Starting with the fundamentals of rooting. That this phone can do the wifi hotspot and tethering if rooted. I have gotten real deep into my phone. though I am not shure it is rooted. I see a lot of files that look a lot like windows operation/system files. But I know enough not to do anything with them beyond looking. If i can't get this phone to do wifi hotspot and tethering. Then can someone please tell me what phone would be good for what I need, for what I can afford or trade for. I got the Kyocera Hydro new from Amazon for $150.00 Other then the wifi hotspot and tethering this phone has suited my needs well. Sometimes (but not often enough to buy a separate cell phone type usb device) I take my laptop out on Amateur Radio demo's were there isn't a open wifi to tie into. That's why I need the wifi hotspot and tethering. I always have some kind of a/c power to plug into at the site.

I would also like to know how to tether... I've already rooted my kyocera hydro tho and only thing i'm having trouble with is finding a working app that will allow me to tether to my laptop. Right now i'm using my gfs galaxy s2 (t-mobile) and it works great for playing hearthstone. The only app i've found that works with the hydro is SVTP WIFI USB Tethering Lite. Bad thing is it only works for 2 days and then it wont work anymore. So i rooted my phone thinking that would work but it still doesn't and I would buy the Pro version but the app store wont allow me to since it says my provider (boost) doesn't allow it. If you could point me in the right direction as to how to tether I would really appreciate it.
i got my friends kyocera hydro rooted.
trying to find a working method to make it a 3g mobile hotspot over wifi connection
anyone know an app that actually works or a method to get it done?
does any proxies need to be disabled in any hidden menus?
The app is called "wifi tether for root user". Its on the play store but I can never find with store app. Do a google search it will show in the google play apps link. You will need to change device profile to "generic ics/jb wlan0". Best tethering app you can get.
Can you tell my how you rooted your hydro?
hey dear community,
I am a proud Nexus 5 owner, but I hate stock ROMs and I love how many new, useful features custom ROMs pack.
I rooted my phone yesterday (note, this is the D821 device), unlocking the bootloader and rooting the stock rom went perfectly fine, however, when I flashed a custom ROM, the storage was wiped along with the system and it wouldnt boot up, so I went back to stock (I could access the recovery and bootloader, it wouldnt wipe, it would only give me storage mount errors and while mounting storage via the recovery it would show 0kb), this went smooth as well, so I decided that since I have lost my data anyways, I should give it a try and root it again. Root was successful, flashing a custom ROM too, I was happy as ever with many functions that I wished, I installed all of my apps, set the stuff up and so on (everything via WiFi). After that I had to leave and therefore disconnect the WiFi, now that's where the problem occurs, when I try to download anything from the net (even play store) the download speed doesnt even reach 30kb/sec. I tested it with speedtest apps from play store, download wouldnt reach 0.30mbps, while upload was at ~3mbps. I'm really confused at this point, could it be caused by the radio I flashed? (I used a tutorial on how to get back to stock) or is it a carrier issue and it's just a coincidence that I rooted the device when they have some issues? WiFi speeds are perfectly fine.
I also seem to have an issue with switching between networks (eg 2g -> 3g -> 4g)
this is the ROM I am using right now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606917
this is the tutorial I used to get back to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701
I did not check the download speeds on STOCK ROM after returning to stock.
also websites load very fast too.
thanks for reading
edit: it doesnt seem to be ROM related, I flashed another ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525627) and the download speed is still slow.
edit... whoops, apologies..I completely misread your post.
I can't see how root would slow your data down. Are you sure your phone network isn't throttling your speed? Do you have unlimited data with a fair usage policy?

Turn off mobile data and wifi on the phone, then restart WiFi only... now do a speed check.

thanks for your reply, I tried your method but it didnt seem to affect my speed at all
I tested the speed on WiFi and I get ~41mbps download and 7mbps upload (thats how it should be with my connection)

Im not limited with my data plan. The speed wouldnt go down no matter what, I've used the same plan for years now and this has never occured before. but Orange recently upgraded their antennas to 4G/LTE so it might be a thing on their side.
I did more research, when I'm on 4g network, the speed is normal, I get 11mbps downs and 3mbps ups, but when it switches to hsdpa or hsdpa+, the download speed goes down so badly that I cant download anything. note that websites load as fast as it should and it should be affected by download speed, right?
I cant see how root could affect it either, but maybe there's an issue with the radio I flashed when I flashed stock ROM back. On the other hand the only thing it COULD possibly affect would be 4g as the US version has different bands for 4g only.
I'm pretty sure it's a carrier issue and it's a malfunction on their side, but I found it quite disturbing that mobile data doesnt work the way it should just after I rooted and flashed a custom ROM.
I switched the simcard with my dads t-mobile, and the download speeds went up to 19mbps on my nexus 5, but at the same time when I tried my simcard in his nexus 4, the speed was good too, but it happened before, so I suppose it's my carrier's fault
and of course I had to switch the simtrays and get it stuck in my nexus 5 I had to tear it down to get it out
Hello!
Is it possible to buy the following items and use them as a mobile hotspot boosting device?

I am grandfathered on verizon's unlimited data still and I am constantly traveling around California. Specifically my room and other remote areas I visit for work I can pull down decent 3g and sometimes 1 bar of LTE.
((( I purchased this item almost a year ago and used the SIM card in my phone to gain 4G signal then I connected to the network via WiFi. Everything worked fine but it was bothersome to continuously switch out my SIM card between devices so frequently whenever I couldn't take the hotspot with me. Seeing as the present situation I am involved with needs the older setup I had before; convenience is welcome.

So here I am trying to build a badass device and mount/carry in my bag while on the go.
Will the first parts I have listed above work? I am worried the boost in signal might not warrant the setup I have planned. Then again if it works as intended it could be extremely useful. Any incite is appreciated!
Furthermore, I have a software related question that could be an alternative solution to my problem.
-The ROM I am currently running is Gummy-M3.0-07-21-14-NIGHTLY-d2lte
-The Baseband version is I535VRUCML1.
Is there anyway having this firmware version is interfering with my reception?
The Gummy ROM is currently on Android 4.4.4. Is there a newer firmware I can flash to update the baseband to receive better signal?
Again thank you for reading and I hope to hear any advice or past experience that could potentially help me out!
XDA Assist isn't for answers, per-se, but rather to point you in the right direction to get the answers and discussion from the knowledgeable XDA members for your situation.
Since your question isn't necessarily about a particular device, I recommend asking your question in the Accessories forum.
I have a pre-recall original shield tablet LTE that has not been updated to any stock rom since the recall.
I RMA'd it and never sent it in, so its likely on NVIDIA's kill-list however I havent run anything with tegraota since booting the replacement.
The newer system images have various modem and firmware adjustments I dont believe are on custom roms.
Q.
My radio is buggy on both tablets, neither have gone past early 5.1.1, do newer system images have more reliable radios/modem firmware? (LTE connection/data drops etc)
Is there a chance my RMA'd device's serial is in the newer firmware and set to kill it on boot?
Can older OTA updates downgrade the modem/etc?
Are there any other changes I should consider (besides root) before booting a newer official update?
Bootloader is only unlocked on one.

I've combed the threads on XDA/google and haven't found a direct answer to these questions and I think the ramifications of firmware updates accompanying OTA's should be clearly understood by the greater community. Thanks!
did the update on the replacement, saw a huge increase in battery life and the modem appears to work much more reliably, i havent tested speeds yet. the notegraota.zip failed to remove tegraota from /system/priv-app/ i had to do it manually via twrp. i might do some side by side benchmarks with the pyro as im a bit worried a hidden killswitch list in the new firmware killing before it can even reach the net.
ive noticed that although the modem is more reliable (less connection drops) it no longer connects to LTE, i can switch sims to my pyro tablet and it jumps right onto band 4 LTE.
No matter how many airplane mode toggles or reboots, I cant get the updated tablet to connect to any LTE band. I've even left it running over night with a script toggling airplane mode and logging any LTE connection, no dice.
Is there anyway to downgrade the modem?
