My service is with Boost Mobile. I have been trying to root the Kyocera Hydro phone I have so I can turn on the wifi hotspot and tethering. I was told by a factory rep and Amazon that this phone can do that job. Boost Mobile says it can't. Boost Mobile says the only 2 phones that will do wifi hotspot and tethering on thair service is the Samsung Galaxy s2 and the HTC Veo. I can't afford ether one new. I was also told by a person online that has been pointing me to online articles about rooting phones. Starting with the fundamentals of rooting. That this phone can do the wifi hotspot and tethering if rooted. I have gotten real deep into my phone. though I am not shure it is rooted. I see a lot of files that look a lot like windows operation/system files. But I know enough not to do anything with them beyond looking. If i can't get this phone to do wifi hotspot and tethering. Then can someone please tell me what phone would be good for what I need, for what I can afford or trade for. Sometimes (but not often enough to buy a separate cell phone type usb device) I take my laptop out on Amateur Radio demo's were there isn't a open wifi to tie into. I can give you the root method I rooted my hydro its a PAIN tho. And you cant change roms at all. But you may be able to teather and use it as a hotspot. But your internet will be crap it will be SOOOO SLOW but you can try. Let me know if you want the method youd have to inbox me for it im new so I cant post link.

I would also like to know how to tether... I've already rooted my kyocera hydro tho and only thing i'm having trouble with is finding a working app that will allow me to tether to my laptop. Right now i'm using my gfs galaxy s2 (t-mobile) and it works great for playing hearthstone. The only app i've found that works with the hydro is SVTP WIFI USB Tethering Lite. Bad thing is it only works for 2 days and then it wont work anymore. So i rooted my phone thinking that would work but it still doesn't and I would buy the Pro version but the app store wont allow me to since it says my provider (boost) doesn't allow it. If you could point me in the right direction as to how to tether I would really appreciate it.

The app is called "wifi tether for root user". Its on the play store but I can never find with store app. Do a google search it will show in the google play apps link. You will need to change device profile to "generic ics/jb wlan0". Best tethering app you can get.

Well i have my transformer and i wanted to be able to connect it to my phone but my phone is only provifig ad hoc conection. I was wondering if thereis a way around this. I was told that rooting the device might makeit easier. I woudnt mind rooting the device(if possible since it is a us version)but if there is another way for me to get wifi access through my phone i will take it.

rooting wont help it recognize ad-hoc, what you can do is do a bluetooth tether instead of wifi.

Thanks....is there an app on how to do this? Im used to just wifi tether and ive never blueooth tether before. Ive looked at my bt setting and everytime i get them to pair the only option i have is for my phone to use the transformer as an internet access which is the total oposite of what i want to do.

I have my SGS running Wireless Tether Root, on BT tether mode. But the Asus Transformer can't see the PAN tether service after I pair the phone and tablet.

Does your phone have wifi hotspot capability? If so root it and turn it into a wifi rounter. Then you just connect to the phone as a wifi device. That's what I do. Not on the TF yet but with netbooks, ipads and an archos gen 8 tablet.

Easy solution, to which no root is needed, is to install FoxFi on your phone. They removed it from marketplace. Just Google for the apk. Install it on your phone. Then install the add on that's in the marketplace. Works flawlessly for me. I had same issue where newer ICS and JB builds on my nexus 7 and note 10.1 wouldn't recognize the old wifi tether app, which used ad hoc tethering and needed root on phones. I've used Foxfi on my old Atrix phone and worked. Tablet picked it right up. Now I have my new Samsung Galaxy S3, which is completely stock. Installed foxfi on that also. Now I can tether my 4g LTE speeds to all my tablets with no issue. No root was needed on phone. App works great on stock phone. Its likely your phone is supported if its a decent/popular android phone.
I don't thinknthe supplicant file method will work on the note. I know I tried it on ly nexus 7 and didn't work. FoxFi solved everything

I think its more so, what particular app people are using to make the ad hoc tethering connection attempt. As people have been reporting not being able to connect. I know, on my older rooted atrix, the tablet wouldn't see the connection using the old tried and proven Wireless tethering app. FoxFi solved the issue for me. I think people that have paid hotspots feature on their phone can get it to work out the box(may be wrong). But alot of others, not just this tablet alone(prime, nexus 7, etc..) have had issues getting ad hoc tethering to work since newer builds of ICS. On prime, we used an alternate wifi supplicant file to get it to work. But later updates caused that to not even work anymore.

Funny you mention that. As I have the old unlimited data plan on VZW I had to spring for the additional hotspot charge to tether my S3. Worked great for a couple weeks then stopped. "Saw" the phone but couldn't lock on an IP. Before the last update. Both phone and tab were rooted stock at the time. Staff at VZW shop had no idea why. Figured I'd ask to not give any cause to jeopardize my plan. That said, FoxFi works great!

Only other thing I can think of is to try using the wireless tethering app. But instead of wifi, choose Bluetooth tethering in options. Its not as fast as wifi but still good for normal usage. Any connection is better than none I was using Bluetooth tethering for a while until I found solution.

I'm pulling this post back from the depth of the forum to ask if there is any news on this front... Foxfi is not working on my phone (motorola Defy), and neither is Wifi Tether. Bluetooth tethering (via PDAnet for example) works but is extremely slow...
Would you have a suggestion either for an android wifi tethering program that supports interface mode, or about a way to add support for ad-hoc wifi in the note 10.1 ?

I have the samsung galaxy victory 4g lte on virgin mobile and I want to use it to tether. I rooted it but no tether app I use is working for me. Does anyone have a working tether on this phone? If not, what are some generic tether apps/ways to get tether working?

Well, even though this thread has no replys, I will explain what I ended up doing with the Galaxy Victory:
I originally was trying to get mobile hotspot to work with Victory using whatever app I could. However nothing worked. I then just tried to use PdaNet+ (FoxFi) USB tether and that ended up working with a regular PC. Then I just used the computer (desktop) to broadcast the network using Virtual Router Plus.
So far this has been working, but hopefully I can eventually get the mobile hotspot working directly from the phone. Although I think this might require a new kernal which I have no experience in making/modifying.

Thanks for letting us know what you did. I have the sprint device, but have not tried any tethering apps. Also, the kernel already supports tethering but the stock tethering app and associated framework try to block tethering from another source. Thanks again and If you're interested in some mods check out AndroidForums. There are not a lot of users, but since Virgin, Sprint and US Cellular all sell this phone now hopefully more will join us. I am using the wifi tether app with the TrevE Mod, with all the settings everyone else seems to be using and I still can't get it to work on my Virgin Mobile Galaxy Victory. Anyone have any ideas or tricks i could use to get it to work?

I'm using the stock app for tethering and it works just fine. Does the stock app not work for you?

Am always on the go cause of work and school so WiFi tether is a must for me.
I think root is the only way you're going to have wifi tethering. I really like the phone but between QC issues and losing some root options like tethering I'm starting to wonder if I should have stuck with the galaxy line.

On the T mobile firmware, when you start the hotspot it checks for a brief second your account so some system app tells t mobile you're enabling it.
On my previous T mobile Xperia Z I used a generic firmware so the hotspot worked no matter if you have the hotspot service or not.
On my t mobile Z3 I have hotspot service so the tether works great via wifi, bluetooth or usb.
Typed on my Xperia Z3 while underwater.
I guess it's going to be moot in a month or so. TMobile sent me a postcard, looks like they're getting rid of grandfathered plans. I believe all plans minus maybe the prepaid ones have tethering now.
Is there ANY customed / modified ROM for the T-Mobile D6616 variant? Or some way to debloat the hell out of the stock ROM? I feel like there's some crap on here that makes it annoying to use, especially hotspot tethering.
I used to have a Z2 international version and it never had any issues with my laptop connecting to the phone's tethering via hotspot. But ever since I got it, it's been a massive prick just going on and off so I'm forced to use USB tethering.
I noticed that every time I turn on hotspot, a quick pop-up comes up stating it need to check my account before leaving. I assume that's the reason why it's so damn iffy and also why I can't remotely turn on tether via my LG G Watch R.
If someone knows how to resolve this, it'll be much appreciated.
