I don't know how well this works but I like it. What the app does is basically upscale your photographs up to 12megapixels. I have compared the same picture on my macbook, one with the enhancement and the other without and can notice more detail when zooming in. There's a lot of options and I am not a big techie but it seems that bicubic interpolation is what to use. Photoshop has the effect and it works the same way. Maybe someone, if possible, could find a way to incorporate this into ROMs so that our camera could be better since that is my only complaint about this phone.
The image can only produce what the sensor/lens allows. Software cannot up a MP, that's a hardware thing. Don't fall for the "omg 4 MP camera" saying, the camera on the M8 is no slouch. Megapixels only come into play when your either zooming in or trying to print out a large picture.
If there were pictures from various 8+ MP cameras mixed with the M8, you and anyone else would never know.

The m8 does take great pictures.... Sometimes in just the right lighting but like richii said, the megapixels are not to blame. The lens and software are what hold this thing back.

I realize that each person is different, but I use my phone to take spontaneous photos and videos of my friends, family and life. If I want a good picture, I'm not taking them with ANY phone (Nokia, HTC, Samsung, etc.) I would use my wife's Nikon D3000 (or to be honest, let her take them, lol).
If the HTC One (M7 & M8) have to the lower MP to take the excellent low-light photos that they do, IMHO it's a fair trade-off. My M7 and now M8 blow away my wife's photos she takes with her S4.
Side note: I think I've used the flash 2 times since I purchased the M7 back in August of 2013. My wife almost always has to use hers.

I failed to say that my M7/M8 blows away my wife's S4 in regards to low-light photos, and probably color accuracy as well.
You must have a bad one... every "expert" comparison of photos between the two phones that I've seen, the color and clarity of detail (with little light in the shot) on the M8 is distinctly better. If you're viewing the photos on a 50" TV, perhaps that's why, but 99% of my photos are viewed on my phone or by my Facebook friends, which are downsized anyway.
The day I see a professional photographer whip out and use an iPhone or Galaxy S5 to take my family portrait is the day that a Smartphone's camera really matters. Until that day, there is no substitute for a standalone camera when it comes to photo quality.
Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Huawei Nexus 6P come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
One of the best mobile cameras. Color saturation, ease of focusing, and HDR is all excellent.
Surprisingly very good! The Moto X Pure was good, but this has crisper images. The OnePlus2 was OK, but the images were "smudgy" in the background.
The nexus 6p takes great pictures. I love it and the double power button push to open camera really does work and its quick.
Great so far, nice upgrade from the stock S5 camera. Low light images look better and apps like ProShot giving us manual controls can be quite handy.
The video is very crisp too!

I guess since I came back to the Nexus line from the S6, I have to say I'm disappointed. My expectations weren't too high though, so I'm not overly disappointed. I got used to, and liked the S6's 16X9 pics. I like how they filled up the S6's display. I'm trying to get used to the N6P's 4X3 pics. I can positively say that low-light pics are nowhere near as good as Google would have one believe they'd be. Period. As long as the lighting is good, the pics will be as well.
Of course, a lesser camera is still worth coming back to the Nexus. So overall I'm happy.
I'm blown away by the quality of the camera!
Coming from an HTC one m8, the photo quality is amazing on the 6P. I'm not used to the amazing quality but I love it!

I would prefer a Lumia, but since there is a lack of apps on Windows Mobile... 6P.
Pictures seem very good., but the white balance when using the flash has a slight green tint compared to the 5X. I noticed this last night and was also mentioned in this article: http://pocketnow.com/2015/10/19/google-nexus-5x-vs-6p-video
"If you’re really looking for a consistent difference here, maybe try to spot the green tint in a few of the 6P’s photos, which for some reason becomes more pronounced when using the flash."
I've attached pictures for comparison. First image is with the 6P and the second is with the 5X. Hopefully this will get fixed in a future software update.
In my testing I am seeing better indoor photos than outdoors in even lighting. Outdoor photos tend to produce darker images against bright backgrounds (sky). If I move the focus to the subject, it compensates the brightness for the subject but then sky is blown out. This is without using HDR+. With HDR+, photos are evenly lit but still on the darker side. Images,. however, are very sharp and capture excellent details. I have a Note 4 too. I would say that Note 4 has a better camera than Nexus 6P. So in my opinion Nexus 6P is good but not excellent.
Coming from a Nexus 6 I'm loving the quality of this camera. However in HDR mode trying to take pictures of my children is pretty difficult. It's quite a bit slower in this mode

I have to agree with you. I had the S6 and I loved the form factor and the camera. I hated the S6 because my wife would always use my phone for photos. She actually used more of my photo storage than I did. I thought the 6p camera was suppose to be on party with the S6 . I have to say some photos of the photos are good but with the S6 I never had a bad photo.
I just hated that the S6 updates would take forever. I know that with Verizon, Marshmallow will not be available until March/April 2016. I went with the 6p cause I could keep Verizon and will always get timely updates. Also I didn't want to have to worry about rooting a phone for it to be functional.

I'm would not say that I'm made with my decision to get the 6p. Just a little jealous because the S6 had a great camera and size. Everything else is wrong with the phone.

Don't you know that you can switch to 16:9 in the camera setting ? (but of course , you will lose some megapixels)

Hi everyone,
So I've been looking at the mate 8 as my next purchase, and Some reviews state the camera quality isn't good due to software/firmware issues. Other reviews state the camera quality is really good. I was wondering what owners opinions are? If it does have exposure and focus issues, are they sorted if you use a different camera app? I don't know if different apps can alter issues that might be related to firmware?

I wouldn't consider myself a power user but I'm very happy with the camera so far. I would mostly be taking pictures of friends and family etc and quality is just fine for me
I'm the same, mainly I'll be taking pictures of the family and scenery, that kinda thing. I'm not what you'd call a professional photographer by any means. But it is said the best camera you have is the one on you at the time, so I just want to make sure it's a relatively good one

That's the thing, I've had both Samsung and LG phones before, and while the cameras were good I wasn't keen on the phones themselves. I've had a G3, a Note 4, an S6 and a Oneplus One. I was half considering a Oneplus 2, but only because of the price. £249 is cheap for a high spec phone. I'm not keen on the nexus line of phones either. I know they are popular, and you probably think I'm mad. But they are just a bog standard android phone. If I'm paying more than £400 for a phone I want it to do more than the straight forward stuff, straight out the box. Other wise id just get an iPhone. Half the stuff on the Mate 8 I'll probably never use I admit, but the fact its there is what I like. Does that make sense?
Has anybody tried a different camera app from the play store to see if that improves the pictures, or isn't it as simple as that? I'm not sure how apps, firmware, API's and hardware all tie in together, so I apologise in advance if that was a stupid question.

The camera is a so and so in my eyes. It's ok, but very soft, in daytime but I wouldn't pick it to take pictures of kids indoor. Right now the best all around camera I have is the Nexus 6P, mostly because it will do really good indoors and most of my pics are indoors. I read that there will be a upgrade for the camera after 162 firmwarewize. Otherwise, it's a really good phone. Apps doesn't do better than stock camera.

The camera is fine. It's not the best camera out there in terms of image quality when you zoom in on the pictures but it does the job. It has good colors and good exposure. It's fun to shoot with. I think quality should be able to be fixed with software update. I find that some indoor night shots almost have the same amount of detail as some of the ones shoot in daylight. The processing seems to heavy creating artefacts in images taken even in daylight.
The Mate 8 is pretty much the perfect phone in every way except the camera is not top notch. Excellent screen that is more clear and has better contrast than the screen on my iPhone 6S Plus. The battery life is the best you can get on any phone now. The build quality is fantastic. Audio quality in headphones is top notch, best I've every heard in any phone the dynamic range and clarity is amazing. Even better than my Meizu Pro 5 that has an internal DAC and amplifiers in it. It is super fast and has a very smooth and responsive UI.
Thank you for your input. You guys have confirmed the fact that the mate 8 will be my next phone just got to wait for it to come into stock again now!

Up until a few weeks ago I had a Nexus 5x. I loved it, especially the camera!
However the Nexus 5x died, and I replaced it with a brand new OnePlus 5t. The screen is amazing, it's runs pretty much stock Android, and the battery life was astounding. But I returned it after 2 days because the camera wasn't even as good as my Nexus 5x.
In bright daylight the OnePlus 5t takes lovely pictures, but in every other scenario it's pretty rubbish (in my opinion).
I mainly use my camera by just whipping it out of my pocket, pointing, and shooting. The Nexus excelled at this. The OnePlus 5t gave me shots with lots of motion blur, lots of noise, and they weren't exposed properly. Most of the photos I took were unusable.
So, the OnePlus 5t went back and I got a Pixel 2. It's a smaller screen and a way worse battery life, but it's by far the best point-and-shoot camera phone I've had, even better than the Nexus 5x. To be honest it's not that much better than the Nexus 5x, but the fact it has OIS does make a big difference to some shots. I love it.
So, if you mainly take photos of things that don't move (landscapes and still life) and can stand really still when you take a photo, the OnePlus 5t will take lovely photos.
If you take photos of people/things that move, or anything indoors, then Pixel 2 (or a second-hand Nexus 5x!) will serve you way better.

The 5T is using the same sensor as the 3T, so the technology is maybe 1 year newer than the 5X. Against which it's a significantly smaller sensor (less light) with more pixels (so more noise). So it's not totally shocking if the 5X camera does perform better.
Anyway, a big part of phone camera performance is the processing rather than the sensor (which Google have certainly been concentrating on in the last couple of years). And at the time of the 5T's release theirs was, well, not good. Look at this image from GSMArena's review, click on the zoom button, and when you've finished admiring the total lack of texture in the leaves and branches take a look at the grass between the fallen leaves and the house. It's many years since I've seen any camera do that type of watercolour smearing in a daylight photo, and I hope for their customers' sake that OnePlus have been doing something about this.
(It's not a one-off either: they published a set of preview photos before their review, and some of those were comically bad. You could have used them as a teaching aid to show students how not to do image processing).

That was my experience, yes. It was bad in low light and bad with any movement (of either your hands holding the camera or of a subject in the frame)
I've found a lot of camera reviews for phone cameras don't take into account real-world usage. They're all set up in studios, or taking photos of a random building, or a flower, and then another flower, or a posed portrait where the subject is dead still. All very 'traditional' photography setups looking more at the colour reproduction and exposure.
Very few (non that I've actually found!) take into account how it performs as something people pull out of their pocket to capture an unposed, often badly lit, fleeting moment. If they did, most would likely find the OnePlus 5t churns out a blurry mess, and the Pixel 2 (while far from perfect and still no competition for an actual small point-and-shoot camera) does just fine.

I 100% agree with that too.
And yes, you can get the Google Camera port for other phones these days which brings their incredible HDR+ processing to other phones, and I did actually try it on the OnePlus 5t (it improved visual quality and processing, but didn't help with any of the inherent problems).
But you have to manually keep that ported/hacked app updated, and it might not be very stable, or not save the actual file sometimes.
Whereas on the Pixel/Nexus it's built in by default and 'just works', and works very well in a lot of situations, which is all you can hope for

Agree with this 100%. I had the OP5T for 10 days and tried every setting I could think of and a variety of apps/apks to improve the quality but in the end there was always some compromise.
Almost all of the photos I take are of my children and the quality was particularly poor (in my opinion) if the conditions weren't perfect (lighting, kids standing perfectly still, my hands perfectly stable etc.). If you need a phone camera to 'capture the moment' by just pointing and shooting then you may be very disappointed by the 5T

And the 5T sometimes did this 'watercolour smearing' to the skin on my children's faces which was the last straw for me. In many cases my older Xiaomi mi5 was taking better pictures.
So I sent it back and bought the Pixel 2 and the difference is night & day. I'm really trying to take a bad picture with the Pixel 2 but keep failing

Which OSS version do you have ? In 5.1.7, Panorama mode is the last one on the bottom of the camera modes menu.

This camera uses EIS to alleviate shaky hands and walking shakiness. Stop doing drugs

There is some noise in dark shots, but nowhere near the previous generation cameras.

Buy a pixel then? I don't understand people. This camera is just as good in most situations as the pixel camera and when it's not, it's damn close. If people are going to complain it's not as good as a pixel camera and it's that important to you then damn, spend $300+ more and get a pixel.
I'm not trying to be snarky but what are you expecting on a phone that is $300-$400 less than another phone? There is a reason you bought a $500 phone and not a $800-$1000 phone

It's not the bests camera if you have a baby. I struggle to get an infocus shot the first time which If you have a kid you need.

S9 is like $700.
S9 is a beautiful phone. Wait till Samsung.com unleashes its sales. The first sale was -$150 off on ATT branded S9 about a month ago. The second sale was -$200 off on Verizon branded S9 two weeks ago.
I bought the ATT one for a friend, requested and got it sim unlocked in 3 days.

I wouldn't call it "pathetic". I compare my Note 8 to my OnePlus 6 and have to say:
• The OP6 focuses better in videos than the Note 8. Tested by driving on average roads. All cars, signs, etc. were perfectly focused whilst the Note 8 really struggled focusing one single thing. Autofocus can't be turned off it seems.
• The OP6 stabilizes images and videos better than the Note 8. Tested by driving on average roads. OIS and EIS on OP6 is great. The Note 8 found its limits where the OP6 succeeded.
• More natural colors on the OP6 compared to the Note 8.
• OP6 only needs half the power to keep the camera running. The Note 8 really got hot in some situations, where the OP6 stood cool. Also tested by driving on average roads.
Sure: I miss the real 2x zoom on my Note 8. Night shots are better on the Note 8 too and even with some issues, the Note 8 wins. But it's a damn close win, because it should only be a matter of time, until good developers will do a dailydriver Google Camera port for the OP6.

I think it's more about the camera app, than the camera itself. Samsung allows you to change the aspect ratio, resolution, framerate, storage location, different grid sizes, gestures, and a dozen different modes including pro mode.
Hm. Grid can be changed up to the Golden Ratio. Framerate is also changeable: 720p with 480FPS and 1080p with 240FPS. Gestures... dunno. Never needed on my Note 8. Aspect is also here. The only thing missing: Different sizes for the photos. I'd like to go back to 12MP, because of better photos (seen from the technical side).
Sooner or later we will have a fully working Google camera. At worst after pixel 3 launch, but it will surely happen.

I think it's more about the camera app, than the camera itself. Samsung allows you to change the aspect ratio, resolution, framerate, storage location, different grid sizes, gestures, and a dozen different modes including pro mode.

OP6 has a pro-mode, I just point and clicking so I don't use it but it's there.
here's my gripes
> Panoramas aren't stabilized, so unless you are a machine while turning around being completely still it won't come out good
> Videos focus in and out so much when there are moving objects it makes it pointless
These two things bother me a lot
This best camera I used, after comparing to mi 8, Zenfone 5z, s8 and v30. V30 has the best manual mode. The 5z before latest update had terrible videos, I was I had purchased it to replace my v30 and pictures only came very clear during daytime.
