Bad battery life on my recent Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I got a second Nexus 5 after my first one suddenly developed a modem fault and refused to work in 2G areas. This time, I got one in red, used, manufactured in March 2014. The phone is in great condition and is as good as new.
Problem is, the battery life is really bad. I'm on stock rom with ElementalX 1.12 and despite undervolting by -25 on all frequencies, my battery life is as shown in the images below. I easily got 3.5-4 hours of SOT with some 15-20% battery remaining on my previous Nexus 5 which I got in December 2013. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is the only phone I can afford right now and I'll have to live with this purchase till at least next year. Thank you.
P.S: I'm down to 22% within the last 30 minutes with an extra 10 minutes of SoT while doing nothing but keeping the screen active.

How's your signal?

Signal is generally good. I was travelling to a remote location today hence the poorer signal but on any day, my battery is pretty much the same. Especially now that I'm back home with a solid signal, it's still dropping battery.

your battery is fine. the longer you go without charging, the shorter amount of screen time youre gonna get. im a heavy user, and use up my battery within 10 hours, but i see 5h sot every day. you are using closer to 24 hours but are seeing 3.5-4h sot. i see nothing wrong with your battery. lower your brightness some and youll see better battery. keep your brightness around 20%.

20 hours, 33% remaining, what's the issue? 3hrs SoT is what is to be expected without reducing the settings that drain your battery. A small undervolt and custom kernel aren't going to affect your run time noticeably, so you've actually yet to do anything significant to increase battery life. That would require adjusting settings to maximize run time.
For more information, see the battery help thread.

EDIT - just saw it was already linked.

Hello,
I am using nexus 5 for couple of days now. Recently I am getting this running process "mm-qcamera-daemon" which is eating 31% of my battery life. (Check my screenshots attached) which is even greater than screen % of about 16% only.
The battery drains real quick. Even though I reboot the phone,it doesn't work.
I also keep getting error message of "cannot connect to camera".

reboot to get rid of the battery loss. and where did you buy your n5? and is a warrenty exchange possible? since your having camera issues as well. you can try going to the main settings, apps, yhen find the camera app and clear its data.

Hi simms22,
I cleared the app data and rebooted. But still same mm-qcamera-daemon is still there eating up my 31% battery.
Is that a bug or issue with my ROM??
I bought it from 3rd person so no exchange possible.
Should I be worried about my battery??

it could be a bug with the rom you are running, if its a custom rom. if so, id flash the factory img first. btw, which version of android is running? anyways, if after flashing the factory img it still happens, i suspect a hardware issue if your camera is not working. so, after a full run, it uses that much battery or is that only in the very beginning, when you just start using after unplugging?

Hi simms22,
I am using stock ROM running on andrioid 4.4.4
This issue doesn't always arise. But happens In like 3-4 days.
Yes I do use the camera.
When I reboot it. It works fine for couple of days again.

ok, then you just have the normal bug with the daemon. after using the cam, reboot. and that should keep it from appearing mostly.

The bug is bugging me. Whenever you need the camera most it shows the error.

[Q] i9020a AT&T/Best Buy Version Advice

Hello All,
Hoping to get some advice. I bought the official i9020a from best buy yesterday (on launch day) seems to be a great phone but I have a few questions and problems.
I unlocked the bootloader but did not root it yet
The biggest issue is battery life. Its terrible (like nexus one before applying the wifi setting trick after 2.3.4 terrible). this NS loses almost 10% of its battery power per hour on standby.
While on standby I have the following running
-wifi turned on
-3 push gmail accounts
Also I noticed that the hotspot doesn't work. when i turn it on it briefly shows 3G and the signal strength bars in green but then the 3G icon goes away and the signal bars turn white, my tablet and laptop can connect but no internet from connected devices and the phone browser itself - just page's not found
my baseband is: i9020aucke1
kernel version: 2.6.35.7-ge382d80
adroid-build 'at' apa28 #1
Build Number: GTJ61
Any advice on the above would be great, I can easily return it but would rather keep it.
Anyone else buy the official Best Buy version and having issues?
Also Anyone know if this phone is locked to AT&T? I don't have handy access to a t-mobile sim card.
Thanks in advance!
Flash new rom. I am sure ATT has some tethering lock on the build. That should be expected.

10% / hr is unbelievably bad (assuming the display isn't constantly on). What's consuming the battery in the battery stats?
Thus far no subsidized Nexus device has ever been sold sim locked (The Vodafone Nexus One, T-Mobile N1 and NS and the various Canadian Nexus devices). I'd be surprised if it were sim locked.
Thanks everyone for the tips. After my original post and now I finished the root and installed cm7.
Cm7 took care of the hotspot issue. Battery life is still pretty dismal in standby. Ill do a test tonight and leave it unplugged all night and post what used the battery the most in the morning.
Thanks again

no man, something is really wrong with your device. My phone loses ~1% in each 4hrs in stand-by (during the night).... I can easily stay 2 days with one single charge (with light use) and with everything ON!
edit: oh, and btw, you won't find better battery in any rom out there. stock rom with stock kernel is the best so far (regarding battery life)... i really tried every single combo and it's the main reason i'm back to stock after so many time (with several devices) using cyanogen. with cm7 i use to lose 1~2% per hour in stand-by!
edit2: you should make some complete battery cycles. Battery life in the first week is not really great, but not that bad anyway!
I think there is something pretty wrong with it
a little over 4 hours last night unplugged in standby/locked
start power: 75%
end power: 35%
most used
display 64%
android system 6%
cell standby 6%
Everything else was system stuff at 1%
Display seems to be the culprit in standby.
Hardware? If so I can easily exchange the phone
Thanks again for the advice
I bought the T-Mobile version back in April. I found that my battery life on day 10 was about TWICE what it was on days 1, 2, 3.... I guess the battery adjusted as it got used some.
I suggest you give it two weeks and then note your battery life again.

I have seen the "battery gets better over time" statements quite a bit on XDA and other forums. I'll give it a week or two and some cycles.
I have to say the "it gets better" is not something i have ever encountered on any smartphone or dumb phone i have ever had though?
Anyone also getting really really slow charging during the 1st week?

If you previously had a non samsung device it charges *slow* even on a 1A charger. No way around that.

Yes, it charges really slow and it wont be better. Takes about 3,5hrs to a complete charge.
Battery really gets better after 2 weeks, but even in day 1, never was so bad as you described.

Ended up returning to best buy swapping the phone. the new unit straight away showed normal discharge during stand by and normal battery when in use.
In the end a bad phone.
Thanks to all for the above responses!
ya you definitely had a bad dud...i was lucky in enough to get a good "dud". with approx. of 3 hours of display on, background syncing, and other moderately intensive tasks i was at a point where i was going on 1 day 12 hours 16 mins and still had 40% of battery left.

Terrible Battery Life

I don't know how everyone else is getting 3-5 hours of on screen time. When my screen is on, I lose about 1 percent every 2 minutes it seems like. When I look at the app usage, the kernel and media are sucking the life out of the battery. I am really discouraged about this battery because my G2 would easily get 3.5+ hours of on screen time. So far, I am going to be lucky to get about an hour.

I have Gsam installed but sometimes it doesn't accurately record on screen time as it resets to 0. Also, today I unplugged my phone and the phone was thinking that the charger was still connected. As I said, Gsam reports that the Kernel is taking battery power.

I am very much on the same page with you. I am on my 4th cycle.
Mine only last 14 hours with 3 hours of screen time. I don't understand how all these people are getting 5 to 6 hours of screen time.

Are you in the right forum? This makes no sense.
I think it highly depends on what you're doing when screen is on. If you're playing games or using a lot of data, it can drain very quickly. If you're watching local videos or something, your battery would last a lot longer.
Im a beginner, xda said i must have 10 posts to do anything on xda so i was filling my posts..sorry friend....now i got 10 posts so im playing with n9005 rom section now
if you are rooted, install better battery stats (free on xda from the dev) to see the culprit.
clearly something is keeping the phone awake and hogging the cpu
So far today with only 10 minutes of screen on time and 45 minutes of playing a podcast through Bluetooth in my car the battery is down to 92%. This podcast was already downloaded and just playing from Dogcatcher. When I left I rebooted the phone right after pulling it off the charger. The phone is rooted and all Verizon apps are disabled. I see the android system at 40% and Google Services at 15% usage. Yesterday with only about 2 hours of screen on time I was down to 18% after 10 hours off the charger. I do not see any one app drawing power, it is always the android system it seems.
Edit: Using BetterbatteryStats I noticed that my phone has basically been awake the entire time it has been off the charger. Out of 2.5 hours it was in deep sleep for 10 minutes.
I don't get great battery life either. Nor do I get good game performance. Battery has went down 9% in less than 2 hours of idle. Just downloaded gsam the kernel use is the highest at 26+ percentage

I will try disabling location reporting. But I know with my Galaxy S3 I had this enabled and did not have battery issues.
I turned off location reporting and location history and am seeing better battery life today. 5hrs 47 min and 89% battery left.
My battery is confusing me. First 2 days.. 15hrs 3hrs screen on time.. 3 days after that 24+hrs with 5hrs screen on time... The past couple of days I'm back down to 14-15hrs with 1-3hrs screen on time. This is running it down to 10%
My usage isn't much different from day to day.
Power saving is now enabled and I turned off location settings. Let's see...
M8, nuff said.
What I do not understand is why my old GS3 and my co-workers HTC One M7 with location services on, do not have this battery drain problem. This should not be an issue.
Yeah, it seems to be an on and off issue. On my GNex sometimes after flashing a ROM I had to turn location reporting off to get through the day, and then after the next ROM flash I didn't.

Battery drain?

Hi fellow Nexus owners.
I've noticed recently (past month or so) that my phone's battery life has taken what seems to be a significant hit. I was getting around 15 hours on a charge with light to moderate use. I am now consistently getting 10 hours or a little more.
I'm running 4.4.4 stock, WiFi on, GPS = high accuracy, and have used both ART (current) and Davlik with roughly the same results. I'm a bit disconcerted by the higher battery use by Android System and Google Play Services.
I contacted Google, and was offered warranty replacement. However, I'm not sure it's worth it. How does this compare with your battery performance? Is it expected for an 8 month old device? Thanks for your input.
one important thing, how much screen on time do you get? as how long the phone last between charges doesnt say anything, as we all use our devices differently. for example, i only see about 7-10 hours, but im a heavy user, that sees about 5 hours screen on time.
Go to the battery help thread in my signature.... Read the first 4 posts. If you need help still, post the recommended screen shots from post 4. ?

Turn your brightness down! i keep mine about 15-20% most the time. when i raise it to 35-40%, ill get 30-60 minutes screen on time less. also, wifi, bluetooth, turn them on only when you need them. speaking of wifi, go to you wifi settings, hit the 3 dots in the bottom right, press advanced, then disable scanning always available. this will keep your wifi really off when you turn it off. otherwise google uses it to look for your location, even when you turn it off.

Do your methods help 100% of the people that follow your guidelines? Just accept that the battery is only 2300mhz so by tweaking a few settings would maybe add in an hour of juice give or take. Believe me, I have tried everything suggested, and have owned this device since release, the battery is Underpowered when used to power up a 5 inch, 1080p screen. You won't find anyone saying the battery is way too overpowered.

If you get 1 to 2 hours screen time.... You either have a defective battery. A very poor signal while in data. Or a really bad draining issue from an app or something.
That isn't normal.... And is well below the average. Well below the low end of the average. And that's average with everything on... Every feature.
But OK.... You win. I'll shut up about it. ?
---------- Post added at 12:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:18 AM ----------
And yes.... If you follow every single tip and piece of advice on post 2 in the battery help thread.... And don't game and your signal is decent.... You have to at least get 5 hours SOT.... At least.

Or you have a wakelock Issue... Another reason why it would be any less.

I have noticed exactly the same thing for around a month, and Google Play Services now constantly appears on my battery stats. I was fairly convinced it's an issue with the Google Play Services 6.1.xx update as I was getting this wakelock:
wake:com.google.android.gms/.auth.be.proximity.authorization.userpresence.UserPresenceService
Googling it reveals little.
As an example, at the moment my phone has been off charge for 26 hours with 1 hour 40 mins screen time and is at 10% battery. That might not seem too bad but I have a screenshot from around a month ago where I had 49 hours off charger with 4 hours 2 mins screen time. Like you, 4.4.4 completely stock unrooted.
I'm going to see if the imminent Lollipop upgrade magically fixes it else it'll be a factory reset for me as I've given up finding a cause.

Poor performance after rooting my Note 5

Iv'e been looking for some info about it anywhere but I couldn't find it so I'm asking here.
I recently got myself a note 5 (T mobile) and I immediately rooted it like I did with all my previous devices.
I used the "stock modified kernel" that someone in this forum provided and it all went smooth.
I then ran a Antutu Benchmark test and I was really surprised to find out that my Note is really lacking behind with a score of 58,478. I ran this test like 4-5 times and my highest was around 69K. Note 5 is listed 3rd place with 83,944.
on the test itself I had some weird lugs on the "garden" test and I could see its probably not at it's best.
any suggestions?
Why are you worried about a benchmark test and switch to skyhigh 4.5

Skyhigh kernel has been really smooth for me. I would also recommend it.

Watch your phone performance over the next days before your 14 day window. My first phone went 100% to 72% overnight when I first picked it up, and the cpu temp was always in the 140+ range. I took it back on day 13, knox tripped but stock. No issues since. they did't ask any questions, I said it was bad and they got me a new one.
This is my battery life so far. How is it compared to yours?
Eventually I got 13 hours and 10 minutes before it shut off and SOT of around 3:30 hours

That is an hour better than my first phone was getting, and hour less than the second gets stock.

So I guess it's not that bad because I'm also connected to my huawei watch so bluetooth is always on. Actually it became much better after a week with the phone I guess that the "battery optimization" had something to do with it as well.

If your watch is continuously connected to the phone, then no I don't believe your screen on time is abnormal
After disabling samsung push services my battery is so much better and I get more SOT even with my huawei watch connected via Bluetooth all day long. Amazing.
The only poor performance I'm experiencing after rooting and putting TEKHD'S awesome ROM on my N5, has NOTHING to with the phone. My wife, however, is PISSED! I just can't put the phone down!

Battery Issues -> 32.2.A.0.224

I know I can look desperate, but this problem is driving me crazy.
My battery was good (but not perfect) in Android 6.0, but this latest update .224 is horrible! I have the same apps and the same use and with a maximum of 3 hours SoT! In one hour of normal use lose almost 10%!
Some people are having the same problem: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperi...ues-32-2-A-0-224/td-p/1137290/highlight/false
I did not clean install of 6.0 to 6.0.1. I just did clean install of 5.1 to 6.0.
There are people who did clean install and are having the same problem.
Someone here is going through the same problem?
Hey, I had the exact same problem as you (UK Generic) and I did a clean install as well. I had to do a factory reset after installing and it took about 2 days for the battery drainage to settle down. Yesterday I got about 4 hours of SOT. I usually get around 2.5 days of battery which is similar to the previous firmware.
Try a factory reset.
To be honest, I'm getting the best battery life I ever had out of that smallish 2,900mAh battery + power-hungry Snapdragon 810, since .224
I still don't get the battery life I had out of my OnePlus One (that thing was a beast), but it's better. I get home after work with between 25% and 35% battery left now. With Lollipop and Marshmallow 6.0, pre 224, it would usually be between 15~20% (25% on good days), same usage pattern.
The Z5 is still not a very good phone in the battery life department, and probably neve will be, but it's better now.
One important thing though: I clean-installed .224

The funny thing is rebooted the device and now improved! Yesterday I got 4 SoT easy! I believe to be some kind of bug that was draining my battery! But anyway I will do a clean install!

I turned off once and giving reboot again, but had not resolved! The system android was 9% and then increased to 14% of battery usage. Is now 6%, ie normal.
I got 4 hours 40 minutes of SOT today, from 100 to 2%. This was mainly browsing and some videos over the span of 10 hours. If I'm lucky I can get 12 hours overall but with only 2-3h screen on time, as I don't use the phone as often.
I noticed something odd today - Wifi is now showing at he top of my usage details and it shows an entire span of Wifi usage (from 19 days ago, I think that is when the phone was updated). It has no impact on the battery life but it's just odd that "screen" doesnt show on the top anymore. I rebooted and the same thing occurs.
The battery usage screen really sucks now - you can't even see if the phone is "awake" or when there was wifi/mobile signal etc.
I got over 7hours with WiFi connected, Opera browser to read wattpad and my phone still had 27%. I've just unplugged my phone 2 hours ago and used it to surfing GG+ and Facebook, 20% for 2hour and 10mins usage. So it's good or bad? This result is a little better than my old Z2.
Same thing here. I usually have up plug in mid of the day just to make sure i have enough juice to survive the night. Around 3 hrs SOT only. Even with the auto sync off and wifi scanning off. Location service is off too. I don't see why the standard stamina mode has been removed that usually prolongs battery. I have doze installed for mobile data minimized but still around 3hrs or so

I get the same WiFi bug and it's currently showing 18 days! Did you clean install the update? OTA or via Xperia Companion?

Which option do you see it?
With normal use, (browsing, social networks, videos, etc) I lose about 10% -15% per hour which I think is normal because I use it a lot. so it may last about 6 - 8 hours until it reaches 20% and I charge it immediately, I only drained the battery from 100% to 0% one time. Because I read somewhere full drains are not good for battery. Anyway if I play games, for example Need for Speed No Limits, I lose about 20% in an hour or so. so if I keep playing it will last only 4 hours aprox. maybe less. But there had been days where I almost don't use the phone and it lasts all day. So I really can't complain. But it certainly doesn't lasts 2 days as Sony said

After charging to 100%, it's gone.
I updated with OTA this time around, and not a clean install.

Got the new update promise to fix batt, did you guys update?
Without any changes on usage type (I cannot say its regular on everyday, but I can say that there is no difference between last update and and previous one) battery performance on last update is about half of the previous one! Even if the stamina mode is activated, draining is very fast on my device (z5 compact). Draining on stamina mode is larger than normal usage on normal mode (prev version). In short, this problem is very very bad on my phone. I'm wondering when this issue will be solved or this is just happened on my device?

Have to keep it in your mind.
I did clean install of .224, wipe everything. Let the battery dies completely and recharged up to 100% without stopping. I had a significant improvement in battery life!
