Battery drain? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi fellow Nexus owners.
I've noticed recently (past month or so) that my phone's battery life has taken what seems to be a significant hit. I was getting around 15 hours on a charge with light to moderate use. I am now consistently getting 10 hours or a little more.
I'm running 4.4.4 stock, WiFi on, GPS = high accuracy, and have used both ART (current) and Davlik with roughly the same results. I'm a bit disconcerted by the higher battery use by Android System and Google Play Services.
I contacted Google, and was offered warranty replacement. However, I'm not sure it's worth it. How does this compare with your battery performance? Is it expected for an 8 month old device? Thanks for your input.

one important thing, how much screen on time do you get? as how long the phone last between charges doesnt say anything, as we all use our devices differently. for example, i only see about 7-10 hours, but im a heavy user, that sees about 5 hours screen on time.

Go to the battery help thread in my signature.... Read the first 4 posts. If you need help still, post the recommended screen shots from post 4. ?

2.5 is normal, on the low side, but normal. 1, yuck!
Turn your brightness down! i keep mine about 15-20% most the time. when i raise it to 35-40%, ill get 30-60 minutes screen on time less. also, wifi, bluetooth, turn them on only when you need them. speaking of wifi, go to you wifi settings, hit the 3 dots in the bottom right, press advanced, then disable scanning always available. this will keep your wifi really off when you turn it off. otherwise google uses it to look for your location, even when you turn it off.

Sure, but you've never asked the community to help. But really, it's not my concern, is it.

I guess complaining is easier? ?

Do your methods help 100% of the people that follow your guidelines? Just accept that the battery is only 2300mhz so by tweaking a few settings would maybe add in an hour of juice give or take. Believe me, I have tried everything suggested, and have owned this device since release, the battery is Underpowered when used to power up a 5 inch, 1080p screen. You won't find anyone saying the battery is way too overpowered.

i do zero tweaking really, and get around 5 hours screen on time. all i do is run rastakat/trinity, keep crappy apps off my device, set up my device right, keep my brightness lower mostly, and i live in great coverage with great lte data speeds.

If you get 1 to 2 hours screen time.... You either have a defective battery. A very poor signal while in data. Or a really bad draining issue from an app or something.
That isn't normal.... And is well below the average. Well below the low end of the average. And that's average with everything on... Every feature.
But OK.... You win. I'll shut up about it. ?
---------- Post added at 12:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:18 AM ----------
And yes.... If you follow every single tip and piece of advice on post 2 in the battery help thread.... And don't game and your signal is decent.... You have to at least get 5 hours SOT.... At least.
---------- Post added at 12:21 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:20 AM ----------
Or you have a wakelock Issue... Another reason why it would be any less.

I have noticed exactly the same thing for around a month, and Google Play Services now constantly appears on my battery stats. I was fairly convinced it's an issue with the Google Play Services 6.1.xx update as I was getting this wakelock:
wake:com.google.android.gms/.auth.be.proximity.authorization.userpresence.UserPresenceService
Googling it reveals little.
As an example, at the moment my phone has been off charge for 26 hours with 1 hour 40 mins screen time and is at 10% battery. That might not seem too bad but I have a screenshot from around a month ago where I had 49 hours off charger with 4 hours 2 mins screen time. Like you, 4.4.4 completely stock unrooted.
I'm going to see if the imminent Lollipop upgrade magically fixes it else it'll be a factory reset for me as I've given up finding a cause.

Yeah. My previous thread. About my battery problems. Don't post if you aren't gonna answer my question... Just saying.
I have had a battery replaced, I've reverted to stock rom, updated, etc, done everything I can, every fix etc. I can't get near the 30 hour battery lifes I can see. Why would I get 6 hours MAXIMUM no talk time, 400-500 texts a day, data lte and gps and bluetooth off, brightness down. Thats pathetic battery. Idk what else to do.
The reason Given for not replacing is that is the average battery use. But on the specs it reports 7 hours of TALK TIME.

How long would your battery last with data on? Whenever I leave
wifi on, my battery drains. For everything else, it lasts the whole
day without charge on moderate to heavy use with lte.
Maybe try your luck with a different att rep?
With my previous skyrocket, I would easily get 14 + hours.

Relax. He's only offering some information to help you. The battery life on your phone is on par for that device. I have the original Galaxy S II and I average about 8-9 hours with heavy use, and an entire day with normal use. Just about all dual core CPU Android based super phones are going to have mediocre battery life. That's just the way it is. You can always get an extended battery, which should give you an additional 3-4 hours of useage. Aside from that, there's not much you can do about it.
What exactly do you expect us to do for you? You've tried other ROMS, a different battery, lowering the brightness, etc. If they sent you another battery, that means you have two batteries now. That should be plenty to get you through the day. You could always try trading the Skyrocket for a Galaxy S II, which is a better phone anyways as it has the Exynos CPU and slightly better battery life.
BTW, 400-500 texts per day is a LOTof screen on time, which would e plain the 7 hour battery life. And leaving WiFi on will also kill ypur battery life. WiFi is a huge power hog. My guess as to why AT&T refuses to swap your device is because you rooted it and installed custom ROMS. (which voids the warranty). And believe me, they know if you did that because they check the custom ROM counter.

what is your screen on time? You sound like you use your phone slightly less than i do. Im lucky to get 5hrs out of my phone. Been this way with every smart phone ive had since the original droid.....and ive had a lot. 400-500 texts means your screen is on every couple of minutes.

I would agree with this. Display time is a huge battery drain. In fact, it's usually my largest battery drain (even more than LTE).
If you only turn on Wifi when it's available, then you will save battery because Wifi is more power efficient than 3G/4G. Otherwise, it will drain battery searching for a network. This also means if you use NO data, then turning off Wifi completely will save power.

Turning on and off your phone that many times will do it in six hours.
to add---talk time assumes the screen is off for that time.
Call them back again and tell them that now your phone got hot and then shut off. say that you used your friends skyrocket battery to see if device still worked and it didnt. they will send a new one.
make SURE you tell them that it just got hot, and shut off. now it wont turn on at all.
Also, if the person you are talking to wont help you just say fine, hang up, call back. still doesnt work? repeat.
Im really not joking. just the other day i had to call them 3 times just to send me a replacement device.
Good Luck!

[Q] Which modem do you guys use?

I'm currently on the stock 4.4.4 modem and I think it consumes way too much power. As you can see from the screenshots, it consumed a ****load of power for 1 hour of call, and no, I keep my wakelocks under control, 98% deep sleep, so what consumed the battery is simply the 1 hour of phone call and 1 hour of screen on. Ironically, the phone call used more power than the screen, which is kinda absurd to me...
So yea, I was wondering if you also noticed that the 4.4.4 modem drains so much battery.
Thanks,
TD
The thing with modems is that every modem works differently for every person. What causes drain for one person will be amazing for another, this is due to usage and almost infinite environmental variables that all contribute to the radio performance. This thread will not help you learn what the best modem is. You'll just have to try them all and find the one that works best for you.
Better a radio that drains than one that loses connection, no?
I use 4.4.4 modem and still get the usual 24 hours and 6 SoT hours....usually.

Same, but we don't usually use our radio very much haha. I've actually noticed the radio is much better at keeping its connection even in concrete buildings that were giving my phone data troubles in earlier versions. This may have come at slightly higher drain but nothing too noticeable for myself.

I use the .15 modem. I have 15,17, and the new one, and flash between them pretty often. 15 locks down a connection quite a bit when the other 2 won't. Not always, but it has been worth the experimenting..
You had the screen on a hell of a lot, the main problem. Where cells are in relation to you, is what causes you to use more power. If it's jumping from mast to mast or 3~4g

Bad battery life on my recent Nexus 5

Hello,
I got a second Nexus 5 after my first one suddenly developed a modem fault and refused to work in 2G areas. This time, I got one in red, used, manufactured in March 2014. The phone is in great condition and is as good as new.
Problem is, the battery life is really bad. I'm on stock rom with ElementalX 1.12 and despite undervolting by -25 on all frequencies, my battery life is as shown in the images below. I easily got 3.5-4 hours of SOT with some 15-20% battery remaining on my previous Nexus 5 which I got in December 2013. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is the only phone I can afford right now and I'll have to live with this purchase till at least next year. Thank you.
P.S: I'm down to 22% within the last 30 minutes with an extra 10 minutes of SoT while doing nothing but keeping the screen active.
How's your signal?
Signal is generally good. I was travelling to a remote location today hence the poorer signal but on any day, my battery is pretty much the same. Especially now that I'm back home with a solid signal, it's still dropping battery.

your battery is fine. the longer you go without charging, the shorter amount of screen time youre gonna get. im a heavy user, and use up my battery within 10 hours, but i see 5h sot every day. you are using closer to 24 hours but are seeing 3.5-4h sot. i see nothing wrong with your battery. lower your brightness some and youll see better battery. keep your brightness around 20%.
20 hours, 33% remaining, what's the issue? 3hrs SoT is what is to be expected without reducing the settings that drain your battery. A small undervolt and custom kernel aren't going to affect your run time noticeably, so you've actually yet to do anything significant to increase battery life. That would require adjusting settings to maximize run time.
For more information, see the battery help thread.

Hello,
I am using nexus 5 for couple of days now. Recently I am getting this running process "mm-qcamera-daemon" which is eating 31% of my battery life. (Check my screenshots attached) which is even greater than screen % of about 16% only.
The battery drains real quick. Even though I reboot the phone,it doesn't work.
I also keep getting error message of "cannot connect to camera".

reboot to get rid of the battery loss. and where did you buy your n5? and is a warrenty exchange possible? since your having camera issues as well. you can try going to the main settings, apps, yhen find the camera app and clear its data.
Hi simms22,
I cleared the app data and rebooted. But still same mm-qcamera-daemon is still there eating up my 31% battery.
Is that a bug or issue with my ROM??
I bought it from 3rd person so no exchange possible.
Should I be worried about my battery??

it could be a bug with the rom you are running, if its a custom rom. if so, id flash the factory img first. btw, which version of android is running? anyways, if after flashing the factory img it still happens, i suspect a hardware issue if your camera is not working. so, after a full run, it uses that much battery or is that only in the very beginning, when you just start using after unplugging?

OnePlus 6 Battery Performance: Initial Impressions

Hey guys, I almost got around 10 hours of screen on time with casual usage. So, I think I can easily get around 7 hours with gaming. How is your battery performing?
Got about 5.5 hours of SoT with some heavy use. Was gaming (idle game that keep the screen on), along with some pokemon go. All while downloading a few thousand songs, updating apps, OS etc. Considering my s6 lasted about 1.5hrs if I did this I'm well satisfied.
Also charged it before bed, and was at 99% when I woke up 8 hrs later, even with all social media apps installed.

This is my first run with a rooted phone as the last couple of days have been stock and getting between 7 to 8 hours SOT.

the autonomy is excellent and depends on the use too.
in my case I have 1 day according to the usage see 2 in moderate use.
after I invite you to search the net energy-consuming apps, you will be surprised and surely understand better your over-consumption.

Hey guys, I almost got around 10 hours of screen on time with casual usage. So, I think I can easily get around 7 hours with gaming. How is your battery performing?

Pokémon go for a couple of hours while playing music, playing marvel strike force, watching a fair bit of YouTube on top of constant Facebook and WhatsApp activity I get a solid 7 and a half hours. Not quite as good as my Nokia 8 I came from but definitely happy.
I get 6 hours with very light use with quite a low brightness and as many black themed apps as possible.

Actually the best way to maintain a lithium battery would be to charge it from like 60 to 70 percent and never let it go above or below that.
More realistically, plug your phone in to charge up to somewhere around 80% when you get a chance throughout the day, avoiding letting it go below 40% when possible. Don't worry about charging your phone to 100% when you might need the battery though (for example don't risk getting lost without a phone for 911/GPS on a hike), just mainly avoid leaving plugged in WHILE it's at 100% and definitely do not store it at full or nearly/completely dead charge for long periods.
The charging port is a completely separate ribbon for the OP6 that should be stupid easy to replace so my advice on that would be don't worry about damaging your charging port as long as you're not handling your phone constantly while it's plugged in. For me, I'm going to wait until the charging port assemblies get really cheap and then buy maybe 2 or 3 for future use, so I won't have to worry about wearing out the phone, it's certainly more desirable to open it up and lose the water resistance than to have to buy a whole new phone simply because of a non functional charging port.

Is it possible to have more 4/5h sot with 4000mah ?!

Hi all !
Small question, is it possible to have more than 4/5 hours of screen with this phone? I'm on beta 18 (but it was the same with my stable 10.0.8) but have a pretty high battery drain without really understanding why (no heavy app use) ...
I would like to switch to Lineage, do you think I could have some improvement? I had also tested the Elemental X kernel on the stable and it worked well, the two combined would be okay?

I've had this device since last Thursday. Most I have done is root it. And disable a few stock apps. No mods no tricks. Bluetooth enabled for my Sammy watch. Wifi cause I'm on a crappy network I'll show you tomorrow I've already plugged in for the night

Crappy network and Bluetooth are the reasons. I used to get 4.5-6hrs of screen on time when I used to use bluetooth all the time. I switched to wired headphones and Now I get 7-10hrs depending on my usage.

I did mostly google apps so far. I'm still under setup and tweaking I just barely got the device. Had to flash back and forth. Tmobile sim unlock. And now I'm kinda setup and I'm averaging it seems about 5 hours. With about 40 % left.
Beta 19, 2k, 90hz, no tweak or anything except using greenify, battery saver is always off, auto brightness on, double sim card, no wifi or bluetooth usage, I use every app on dark mode, no gaming, daily use + watching full hd or 2k videos for an hour or more a day and I get 6-7 hours screen time. The phone is 10 months old
