OTA Updates without the lockdown... - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Hi all, I came across a thread that spoke of updating our VZW M8s with all the benefits of the latest OTA's without losing root, s off, or unlocking. If memory serves, I think it was done through a custom recovery. But I cannot find it now... Seems it was a great way to miss out on all the VZW lockdown referendums. Thanks.

You need to be s-off, but assuming you are, check the following link and read the op carefully. I've been through the process multiple times and it works great. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723159

Yes! that's the one! Thanks. The title was different than what I remembered...

Can I upgrade my G1 but keep my phone unlocked?

Hello, recently I got my Google G1 unlocked and now i am running the phone using a foreign sim. The build on the phone is RC29 but I want to upgrade it to RC30. My question is, will I have to REunlock my phone if I install this update? Will the phone do a factory restore and start asking me for my google account info? If so, is there a bypass around this which DOES not include enabling wifi through adb, because I have tried it and my wifi is not working on this specific phone...Also what are the benefits of the update? Is anything new added? Thanks for any help in advance!
It should reset back to normal, so you will lose the unlock.
I would recommend running a rooted doughnut or eclair rom. I don't believe you will loose your unlock of you upgrade though. Why are you on such an ancient build?
Aiui SIM lock status has nothing to do with which set of ROMs you have installed, so updating should not lose your unlocked status. If you update with official ROMs & were rooted you will however lose root.

Ok first off thank you for replying... Well I understand that it will loose root if I upgrade it to a genuine RC30 and that doesn't pend a problem for me. BUT I need to know 100% that if I am to upgrade it via downloading off of my computer and installing it through the bootloader that I will NOT loose my unlock status. I really am not in the mood to pay to have it unlocked again. Thanks again!
I haven't done this myself so can't say any more than the following. Over the last two months I've read a large number of posts on xda & modaco. I've seen this question asked about half a dozen times. Not once has anyone posted a seemingly informed opinion saying ROM flashing will affect sim lock status. Each time there has been a response stating it won't be affected.
If you need more certainty than that you'll have to hope someone responds who has actually done this or who has familiarity with the underlying technology. Good luck.

Well... I think there's only one way to solve this and that is to try it out and hope for the best . Hopefully everything will run smoothly but if it does loose the unlock status at least i will have learned something new! I will reply with the outcome in my next post.

What is the best current way to root & unlock VZW S3?

Guys, I have spent hours rooting and unlocking my S3. Reason it has taken so long is either I don't know what I'm doing or there are so many ways to do it, some may be outdated or something. I'll side with the first reason. But, I do have experience in rooting...kept my OG Droid rooted/overclocked/customized. Did the same with my Thunderbolt. Also rooted my S3 a few months ago after the VZW update that crapped out the radio. When they released the fix, I removed root and installed it. Got the urge for some new stuff and here I am...
Here is what I'm doing:
- Using CausalR795b. Seems quick and easy. Definitely provides root, but I'm not sure about unlocking the bootloader. What is the insecure aboot? Says it's ready to install it, but I can't find out what this is?
- Trying to install TWRP recovery. What is the easiest way to do this? The last time I did it with Goomanager, I got the Verizon Unauthorized Software message at boot.
- Trying to install the latest Hyperdrive ROM. Got it installed once and on reboot, got the VZW Unauthorized message again,
- Using ODIN 3.07 to flash a stock ROM after getting the error message.
Can anyone tell me a link with good directions, start to finish? Or, give me some advice? To me, at least, seems like VZW has made customizing the S3 unnecessarily complicated,
Thanks in advance.
Insecure aboot is the unlocked bootloader. Once you install that you will no longer get the VZW Unauthorized message.
First welcome to the community.
second, this is the wrong section.
third, you have to use D2VZW-CASUAL-R634b release to fully unlock bootloader

My bad...I did post in the wrong place. Wasn't even thinking about it. Had just spent so long in this subforum trying to find answers, must have lost my bearing.
I really appreciate your help! The older Causal did everything in one try with no hiccups whatsoever. Why isn't anything posted about this noted in the newer Causal thread? It might be in there somewhere and if I would have seen it, hours would have been saved.
Now rocking the newest Hyperdrive and probably going to try a few more ROM's. Thanks again!

[Q] OTA system update 2 days ago?

I'm running KitKat 4.4.2 rooted. Two days ago, Verizon started trying very aggressively to push a system update onto my phone, and they don't say what it is. Does anyone know what they're trying to force into my phone? I do not want to lose root.
Also, is there any way to stop the aggressive update prompts? If I don't manually set a time to be prompted again, it will push the update without my consent. Is there an Xposed Framework module that can help?

It's this (VZW pdf-file). Also see here. Even if you downloaded the OTA, the installation would fail, because your device is rooted.

Is it in the right place now? I get confused about where to post here, sorry.
I can see why they updated the messaging app. It was completely unusable. Is it still KitKat 4.4.2?
Most importantly, if I were to install it, would I still be able to root using the towelroot app?

I have Titanium Backup (Pro), but I don't see the update app anywhere on my phone. I'll post my question in the other thread. Thanks for the link.

Yes, I moved it to the Q&A section.

Hi, I have the Droid Razr Maxx HD xt926 as well and have never done anything with android before in terms of software modification. I first learned how to root my phone and unlock the bootloader in June via the towelroot exploit. I've been wandering around this website wondering how to get this ota update without losing root. I've seen some posts regarding flashing an fxz file, but have also had a hard time understanding what it all means. I have not installed a custom ROM (yet), but when I try to take the ota, it fails because I am obviously rooted. What do I do from this point out? Do I still need to flash a stock image file? Should I just not take the update/is it worth it?

If you decide to install a custom ROM, you won't have to waste another minute pondering the OTA. If you decide to stay on stock, and want to get VZWs latest firmware on your device, I strongly suggest that you triple-read and follow the instructions in this thread to the T. You will then not have to worry about another OTA nag, because this is the last Moto/VZW update for the XT926.
Okay thanks. I saw that thread on the general forum, but wasn't to sure if I should proceed. I'm going to follow the directions on the original post as I had been planning to do, but was too worried about any consequences. I will report back if I have any problems, given that I can follow instructions. I'll probably just go ahead and try to install the most recent stable release of CM when done. Fingers crossed.

Proper way to go about rooting

Okay so I just received my brand new M8 through Amazon and luckily it came shipped with 4.4.2 out of the box.
I may or may not want to install roms as of yet, but I at least want root to remove the bloatware. What's the best way to go about achieving that and to updating to 4.4.4 while maintaining root?
The two exploits for the m8 (firewater and sunshine) both unlock the bootloader and turn s-off. Firewater is free and only works on some 4.4.2 devices. Sunshine is SUPER easy, costs $25 (I think) and works on 4.4.3 or lower and is expected to be updated soon to work with 4.4.4.
Once s-off you should find (at a minimum) the pinned threads for details on flashing recovery and the super user/super su binaries.
Newbie (not intended to be insulting) advice: it sounds like you have a lot of reading to do. While your question is reasonable, it implies that there's a lot you may not know and gaining s-off opens parts of your phone that you can really screw up. Read read read everything you can BEFORE flashing anything.
Welcome to the m8.

Definitely don't take the OTA update to 4.4.4 until you've got s-off and root. They fine folks haven't cracked that nut yet. If I recall correctly, I used the weaksauce/firewater method. This is the guide I used: link. I'm pretty sure my device was on 4.4.2 when I bought it just a few weeks ago, but I'm not 100% certain. In any event, as long as you're not on 4.4.4 you're good.
As for getting to 4.4.4 once s-off, I flashed CleanROM and it's been running like a champ. Any 4.4.4 ROM you flash is going to require a firmware update. Firmwares can be found here.

Here is the sunshine link in case firewater doesn't work. Instructions and how to's are in there I believe.

I feel where the OP is coming from. I've gained root/s-off on 6 different HTC devices to date and just about all of them have some new or different twists from the last. I've found it's best not to make assumptions with an unfamiliar device and to ask clear, concise questions. I'm sure his OP will answer the same question lots of people will have in the coming weeks.

It's just that HTC is new and to me seems a bit more complicated than Samsung. I am used to Samsung and having Odin makes things way easier. But i'll definitely give it a shot, thank you guys.
Did you get firewater to work for you ?

I've worked on a number of Samsungs. HTC's are a bit more complicated, but I strongly prefer HTC for a number of reasons.

Updated to 6.0.1, CAN THIS BE UNDONE??

First, I'd like to say that while I'm not new to this, I AM quite rusty. So before you call me retarded for doing what I did, I already know. Now...
I have been just daily driving along on 4.4.2 for a good few years on my phone but I just got a Tab4 and rooted it and noticed that the TWRP version I wound up with was newer than on my phone, and had a few more options. Sooo, I tried to Odin the TWRP to my phone and caused all kinds of problems. Wouldn't boot. So I downloaded everything I could get my hands on to try to Odin onto the G900V to get it up and running again. The ONLY this I could flash was this...
PD1_Full_Factory_Restore_No_Aboot.tar
So now the phone is on the 6.0.1 which I figured was great but quickly noticed that not everything was working. No WiFi, no Camera, no Back and Recent keys, and no extsdcard recognition, so obviously unacceptable. Is this too new to be undone? I spent all night last night and today reading through the various forums, and I haven't seen it directly addressed.
Here are my questions...
1. Can I root this and fix the issues from there? If so, with what tool?
2. If I cannot yet root this, how do I downgrade from this kernel/firmware to something that is at least stable for this device?
Point me in the right direction, I'm not a total newb. I've rooted many devices, many times, but I really haven't been keeping up on anything for some time. Any help would be awesome, I'll pour some beer out for you, Thx in advance.
~Chris
I tried all of these, none will flash via Odin but the one that got me to where I am (PD1)
mods, please delete this post #2.
I edited it all into #1
Odin back to stock
I did something similar, which is what I get for just reading the instructions instead of the warnings at the top of a post.
I tried a number of things, but ended up using odin to do a complete wipe and go back to stock.
Thanks for the reply.
AFAIK this IS a stock ROM, but as I said this was the only thing I could get to flash after I tried to flash a new TWRP. Nothing else will go.
Being a bit rusty myself, it caught my ear when you mentioned the full wipe, I never performed a wipe of any sort during my efforts.
Could that be the problem?
Also, someone please refresh my memory, what piece is it that actually determines whether a device is rootable?
Is it the kernel? Is this one rootable? What is the modern method for acquiring root? I was using towelroot back in the 4.4.2/4.4.4 days.
Thanks
UPDATE : It also will not make a phone call. Hitting the CALL button or trying to answer when it rings will cause the phone to reboot, lol
Someone please get me back to a custom recovery, I've got some great TWRP backups and a ****load of titaniumBU
Just downgrade to PB1 using the stock TAR and unlock your bl from there...
Thank you for the PB1 advice.
Should I be able to accomplish this via Odin?
Is a full wipe/reset required?
Thank you for the PB1 tip
Got that handled, all is up and running, but not rooted
Gunna have to wait till after work for that stuff
Thanks again
OK so now I'm fully stock PB1, where do I want to go from here to acquire root?
Which of these 2 threads shall I follow?
[GUIDE] Unlocking the Galaxys S5 Bootloader using DEV Bootloader [KK-MM], OR...
Working Root Method For 5.0 Lollipop Roms [OE1] [OG5] [OK3] [PB1] [3-3-16]
I ask because above I was advised to "downgrade to PB1 using the stock TAR and unlock your bl from there..."
My question arises from the fact that I had this phone rooted for YEARS before I messed it up, and the thread proclaiming that "S5 bootloader unlock is here!" seems to be only 3 months old. Leading me to wonder, do I need an unlocked bootloader, or merely to acquire root? Seems like a valid question to me. I just want to make sure in advance before proceeding.
SO in summary, this is the question...

Thx for that. Being able to see the video helped a lot, not because I can't read, but just because I was able to see what was SUPPOSED to happen at each step.
All fixed up now. Thx again.
