If I am s-off running stock 4.4.4 can I just flash recovery via adb and then go through the usual process for installing a custom rom?

If by "usual process" you mean make a back up of the stock ROM then wiping and installing your choice of custom ROM, then yes.
Yep, that's what I meant. Thanks.

Whenever I try to do an update, or install a custom ROM I get status 7? Any ideas?

Try updating your recovery to a newer version.
Is it possible to flash a custom rom without root? If so, where can I find one?
Thanks for your help!

No. No custom roms unless you're rooted and unlocked. The closest you'll get are flashing Verizon factory stock roms via Odin, but those are not rooted.

What is your purpose to use custom rom without root?? Custom rom, by default required root for all the modded apps to work.

Umm, why?
I'm new and just trying to learn, that's all. I come from I phone. The S3 un-rooted can already do more than a jailbroken iphone. Almost like learning a new language with the Android and rooting.

The quickest way to do it I think if you didn't make a backup with flashify, which you should next time before you flash custom recovery again....is to CF-AutoRoot, Chainfires program roots with custom recovery then flashes stock right after so you will have stock recovery and stay rooted without doing anything else!
Thanks thats what i used to root so should be easy

No problem broskini! and sorry forgot to mention towel root, ive heard it does not trip knox, I got my phone before towel root. Towel root wouldn't do same thing as CF-Autoroot as far as flashing stock recovery! So do not use CF-Autoroot to get stock recovery if you Towel rooted.
I had my phone before towelroot also i wish id have waited to root for it but oh well still thanks for the info

Just wanted to know if its possible to root (towel root) flash custom recovery and custom roms and then if I decide to later revert totally back to stock unrooted nexus without a PC. Ive attempted to read up on this but I'm a little confused that ill need to use SDK and ADB which i can't have access to at the moment or have the skills to use.
I've seen apps on google play to unlock boot loader once towel rooted but I'm just unsure if i can revert totally back to an unrooted nexus 5 with original recovery, without a pc as I'm using an iMac and having really unreliability with it :/
Id greatly appreciate any help :good:

You may need a computer to return to stock but otherwise you shouldn't need a pc

The nexus devices are the easiest devices to get back to stock because Google supplies the stock images

There are a couple different options.
I'm not sure if flashify requires a unlocked bootloader. Root, flash custom recovery with flashify, make a backup. When you are done either restore backup or if stock already use flashify to flash stock recovery, delete root apps, unroot via supersu.
Boot unlocker I have heard will work to lock and unlock boot loader but I'm not sure about resetting the tamper flag.
Using fastboot and adb is always going to be the surest and safest way to root etc. Unless you are going to be submitting your phone for RMA there should be no reason to unroot. You can always flash a stock rooted ROM and just leave it.

Steps are;
-Download boot unlocker fr on play
-Download flashify from play (just in case)
-Download vomers stock ROM (number 6 in resources section in the link in my signature)
-Download stock recovery (number 7 in resources section in the link in my signature)
Firstly, flash the recovery zip via your current recovery and reboot
Then, reset The tamper flag and lock the boot loader
Finally, open SuperSU and use the full indoor option to remove Root
Good as new.

Sorry for the noobish question that I should know, but it's been a while since I've used an HD.
I picked up a used HD on 9.18.94. Can I simply sideload 183.46.10 and run the bootloader unlock? My first goal is the bootloader then I can flash root and unlock the radios so my wife can use it on ATT

Yep, just upgrade straight to .10, unlock, root, and you'll be good.

What are you trying to flash? The FXZ needs to be flashed in RSD.
