MMS not working - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else having this issue. Not sure when it started as I didnt send an image up until today.
Yesterday did an unlock and root on mine. Just says "queue for sending" then after 5-10mins it says couldnt send. I also cant receive mms of course. It says "message not downloaded". Im on t-mobile and I already checked their site for mms and lte/4g apn settings. I also redownloaded the settings from within the phone. its a D6653

gave that try and didnt work either. just delaying the "message couldnt send" . can you think of anything else my friend?

Are you absolutely sure that you don't have a typo somewhere in the APN settings? Is you mobile data otherwise working as supposed to be? This, for sure, is not a problem of the phone for it works just flawless on mine.

Try Textra, IMHO, it's a lot better than Sony's app (And most outthere BTW) and just go to MMS settings and select the option that says something about T-Mobile Wifi calling Fix. What this does is turn-off/on the wifi while it sends or receive an MMS. T-Mobile seems to be having tons of issues with MMS while in Wifi.

No typos. Data and sms work. And I am at work right now and tried to send a mms to see if it was the wifi sip calling but it isn't.

I've had to add MMS proxy and port to apn:
216.155.165.50
port 80
give that a try. It worked for me on my OnePlus One (manually added to all texting/SMS apps and it worked)

I also am having problems with MMS.
I don't really live in an area with great service, so I really rely on Wi-Fi calling. On my Galaxy S5, I had to use the stock message app to actually be able to do anything with MMS over Wi-Fi. Now with the Z3, MMS does not really work at all. I keep getting "Message not downloaded" for any MMS I recieve, excpet for one picture I was able to get. Any MMS I get does not stay in a group chat, but goes into their respective contact chat.
I tried Textra, but I wasn't able to get any of my MMS messages to send. I went into the settings and checked a few boxes, but that didn't really do anything.
Hopefully our problems have the same resolution.

So I finally fixed mine. I downloaded the Internet and mms settings via phone then I added admin to apn type and changing apn protocol to ipv4/ipv6. The apn protocol is thanks to se100 who told me in this thread.

Once you got them, what'd u do next? I got to the "Edit access point" screen but it's all greyed-out so I can't choose anything. I have "Developers Options" enabled too btw. So how do I bypass that grey-out like you did??
Do I need to be rooted?
So you have no more issues with sending/receiving photo text msgs? What about from iPhones? I'm only having mms issues with iPhone phones right now.

To download the settings you need to go to settings->more->Internet Settings. That downloads them after go to Mobile Networks->Access Points Names and then you can click the three dot on top to edit the one you pick.

Did you have an issue with receiving MMS messages from iPhones?? Please answer this question. If not, then this method prob won't help me anyway. I'm having an issue with receiving MMS messages from iPhones only. Still get SMS from iPhones, and regular and MMS msgs from Android.

Didn't have problems with tmobile with my iPhone. Only my android did but that fixed it for me. Idk what android you are using or if you're still using iphone. You didnt give enough info

I have T-Mobile too but only have the Z3. I don't own an iPhone. When I send MMS pics to iPhone it DOES go through, but I can't receive FROM an iPhone the MMS messages.
I'm using regular Android (Build #: 23.0.D.1.123). You?
I want to do what you did, but I don't see that "Internet Options" screen you do after clicking on More. So I can't proceed from there. I can get to "Access Point Names" but after that I can't edit APN there.... I can only create a new one. But without that downloaded info, I don't know if it will work? Maybe.
I just decided to create a new one and take my chances. But I added in what you had in your screenshot, including the admin thing (I hope that's not a root thing) and also IPv4/IPv6. Waiting for one of my iPhone friends to MMS me and hopefully it works!!
Edit: It didn't work. lol I just had him tap on msg before sending and choose "Send as a text message". Then it goes through as a regular text msg NOT as an iMessage. That DID work. So either iPhone users must do that for me or else turn off stupid iMessage. lol

Well there you go it's imessage issue which is common when switching. Got to make sure to remove and deactivate imessage before going to android

Yeah but this was not an issue of switching. I never had an iPhone. It's just that the few ppl I know that do have to take that extra step in order for me to receive MMS messages from them.

I use Textra as well since the Z3's stock messenger app clearly CANNOT handle MMS properly. This is what worked for me....................

2) Disable Stock Messenger app, making sure in "App info" screen (in Settings) that the "Notifications" box is unchecked. (Not sure if unchecking it matters, but I'd do it anyway.) Also, under Stock Messenger's settings, make sure ALL boxes are unchecked as well.
3) In Textra (download this great text SMS/MMS messaging app if you haven't already from Google Play Store), make sure it's your default app, "Use MMS for Group Chats" should be checked, MMS Settings: No Limit, and check the T-Mobile Wifi Calling Fix box too.
4) In Phone settings, under Call Settings, uncheck/disable: VoLTE. For WiFi to work, you must also disable anything else you have enabled on this screen (i.e. Microphone noise suppression, Speaker voice enhancement, etc).
5) You can leave STAMINA mode on (under Power management), however...... only enable the "Extended Standby" option and of course Activation should be at 100%/Always on. When Wi-Fi is on, you must also have whitelisted 2 specific apps in STAMINA under the "Apps active in standby" list: The text msg app you're using (i.e. Textra, etc) and I would also whitelist one under "All others" entitled "Phone/Messaging Storage". Again, this is only for when you have Wi-Fi on. Keep the other stuff disabled in here. With regards to STAMINA mode.......
First, put Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep to "Always" (Settings, Wi-Fi, Advanced). Also, make sure everything else on that page is unchecked/disabled. Turn off STAMINA mode. Go into Settings, Apps, All, Extended Standby Mode Controller, Clear Data AND Cache. Then go to your text app's (Textra, etc) "App info" page (on same Apps "All" screen) and clear ONLY the cache, then close out the app itself (3D button to the right of the virtual Home button, swipe the text app off the screen). Reset. When you come back, follow what I said above, including turning STAMINA mode back on ("queue background data" will be enabled. Leave it that way!) Make sure that when you turn STAMINA mode on that the pop-up shows up describing it. If it doesn't at any point, then repeat this paragraph's instructions. What I just said here MAY resolve any lingering MMS issues, and also resolve any issues regarding with STAMINA mode not kicking in too. When I did this my phone spit out a few "missed" incoming MMS messages out all at once. And the battery seems to be last longer too.
It seems that MMS messages will def show up if Wi-Fi is on, but it will take longer to show up if screen is off. Maybe 3-5 minutes longer.
If you have any questions, let me know. I'm still testing this out so I may make more changes. We'll see.
P.S. This ALSO fixed my Smart Call Handling issue where it wasn't working, but now is.
P.P.S. For whatever reason, if you're getting an MMS message from someone with an iPhone, and they have "iMessage" turned on, the Z3 will NOT receive the message. So you have to ask people who have iPhones and are sending you MMS messages to kindly turn it off, and then all should be fine.

I disabled the "Queue background data" in power management...... and It looks like I'm able to download MMS.

I think I tried that and it wasn't enough for me, but test it anyway.
In addition to what I said, I did a factory reset using Sony's PC Companion software, and now my phone is FINALLY working flawlessly. Not saying all Z3 phones having these issues have to do this, but I did and it worked. The following is a result of HOURS of research and trial & error:
All,
I use Textra since the Z3's stock messenger app clearly CANNOT handle MMS properly. This is what worked for me....................
Before setting up your Z3 to be able to handle MMS messages correctly, as well as enabling Smart Call Handling to ACTUALLY work, you must do the following which will do both a factory reset AND re-update your phone. My software must’ve been corrupted at some point because after doing this, my phone worked much better. The battery life had gotten really bad but now it’s back to incredible again. My phone works 100% for the first time ever (just no VoLTE ((for now at least)), but who cares, I don't get it in my area yet anyway!!
** Sony PC Companion Instructions:
We have an extended guide that should help you fix the issue on your phone, please follow the instructions carefully:

Run the software and install it
Turn the phone off and disconnect it from the computer
1. No matter what the program says do not connect the phone until you complete step 9
2. In the welcome screen you will see the different modules available for you including the "Support Zone" option. Click on "Start" below it.
3. On the next page Click on "Start" under "Phone Software Update"
At this point if you get an error stating that "Unable to install update components" or "Server is busy" , then please proceed to step 12
4. The program will say that there is no phone connected. Click on the option below that reads: "Repair my phone" the program will issue you a warning about the content that you will lose during the update
5. Choose the option to continue.
6. The program will issue a final message warning you of possible data lost during the update. Click on the checkmark and then on "Next".
7. After that, the program will download the necessary information (5 to 6 minutes) and it will present you with a list of phones.
8. Choose your phones model from the list then click on "Next" then you will see a new section telling you how to connect the phone. (don't connect it yet) (YOU CAN FIND YOUR PHONE’S MODEL # BY DOING THIS: SETTINGS-->ABOUT PHONE-->MODEL NUMBER)
At this point the phone must be off and disconnected from the PC.
9. Connect the cable to the PC not to the phone, then while pressing and holding the indicated button (in the steps on screen an specific button will be shown for you to press on the phone) connect the cable to the phone and keep holding the indicated button until the program says "the update of your phone has started..." (in some cases a message of "Installing drivers" will appear before the message of "the update of your phone has started..." is shown.)
10. If you failed to follow the steps correctly the phone will turn on and it will request that you "Proceed with the following steps, slide down the notification bar", If this happens disconnect the phone from the cable, turn it off and repeat from step 9).
11. If the phone is connected properly, PC Companion will proceed with the update ( It will tell you to let go of the back key) then wait for the update to finish and follow instructions on screen to disconnect the unit.

12. If "Unable to install update components"
1. Close PC Companion
2. Install Java from: http://www.java.com
3. Start PC Companion again and try to do the software unlock process once more.
Note: If you wish only to update the unit wait for the program to open and then select the quick link on the upper left corner that says "Update Phone/Tablet" and follow the instructions to perform the update. Also make sure “Queue background data” is enabled too. You must also have whitelisted 2 specific apps in STAMINA under the "Apps active in standby" list: The text msg app you're using (i.e. Textra, etc…. the stock app will NOT be listed though) and I would also whitelist one under "All others" entitled "Phone/Messaging Storage". Keep the other stuff disabled in here. With regards to STAMINA mode:
5.1) OPTIONAL: IF AT ANY POINT STAMINA MODE IS NOT WORKING (i.e., WITH IT ON AT 100% POWER, IT SAYS ON STAMINA MODE SETTINGS PAGE THAT YOU HAVE ANYTHING LESS THAN 5 DAYS AND 3-4 HOURS FOR ESTIMATED BATTERY TIME), THEN FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS: Turn off STAMINA mode. Go into Settings, Apps, All, Extended Standby Mode Controller, Clear Data AND Cache. Then go to your text app's (Textra, stock, etc….do it for all texting apps you have) "App info" page (on same Apps "All" screen) and clear ONLY the cache, then close out the app itself (3D button to the right of the virtual Home button, swipe the text app(s) off the screen). Reset. When you come back, follow what I said above, including turning STAMINA mode back on. Then do as instructed in “5)” above.

7) OPTIONAL: IF HAVING ISSUES RECEIVING TEXTS FROM IPHONE USERS WHO HAVE iMessage ENABLED ON THEIR IPHONE, THEN FOLLOW THIS: And lastly, there’s the “iMessage” issue ppl like myself are/were having (also those with LG G2 I’ve heard have this issue too) where when someone with an iPhone sends you an MMS pic text msg while their iMessage option is on, you don’t get the text…….. try this (a T-Mobile store rep told me this and it worked!): send YOURSELF an MMS photo text msg but include at least one other phone # as well too. If you’re using Textra or anything besides just the stock text app, then do this for EACH app. If that is the case, then do it via stock app first then Textra (easier this way). If you receive the pic successfully, then ask anyone you know with an iPhone to send you an MMS message (preferably having a 3rd phone # in on it too, but not sure if you need to) with iMessage ON. If you receive it, then it worked. If not, try this again.
What I just said here MAY resolve any lingering MMS issues, and also resolve any issues regarding STAMINA mode not kicking in too.

Very excited to hear about your fix. Many thanks for sharing! Before I go ahead and follow your instructions, I was just curious whether this fix has "stuck." I recall a few others, when attempting other fixes, experience a reversion back to the same MMS issues.

arrrg.....mms cannot be had.

First off let me say ive searched this site high and low and tried almost every .cab ive found and followed plenty of setup instructions but still for the life of me cannot get MMS to work. email i get no problems sending texts i get no problems. but no MMS , and i think ive tried everything on this site.... im running Farias WM6 rom , and love it.
I had MMS working on the phone before i had to reflash beacuse i updated a radio rom and it almost bricked it.... so i followed all the instructions again just like usual and reflashed the downgrade rom and then upgraded to farias. I just dont remember what it was i did to get MMS working before
If someone could help me out it would be much appreciated.....

Yea , no MMS at all......
cant recieve or send.....
I had it working on the Faria rom before i had to reflash.....
all i keep getting is " error syncronizing " everytime i try to hit " send/recieve"
I had the same issue, go under the MMS settings, then goto server, select Cingular MMS or whoever your carrier is, mine wascingular, and then set it to the default and delete the one named default
If there is not other one besides deafault, then you need to ask your provider for your settings and add it.

Ah! This sorta illustrates the problem. I had mentioned that I couldn't seem to send MMS, although I *could* browse the web via GPRS.
Well...I spent some time on the phone with T-Mobile "PDA Support" and finally have this figured out! There's been talk here about using the two different APN's available to T-Mobile Internet customers for WAP and MMS versus regular website browsing.
When I spoke with T-Mobile PDA Support, I was told a few things:
1) they've had some network problems that aren't 100% resolved that could be messing up our ability to browse the net, consistently get EDGE speeds, or send MMS messages.
2) MMS is supposed to be sent over their WAP gateway, so for this, you should use "wap.voicestream.com" as your APN.
3) Web browsing for full HTML web pages is supposed to be done over their non-protocol-restricted internet gateway, so for this, you should specify "internet2.voicestream.com" as the APN.
I did some experimenting, and it seems that I cannot send MMS when I connect via "internet2.voicestream.com", and I cannot browse the web when I connect via "wap.voicestream.com". But, as the gentleman from T-Mobile PDA Support suggested, when I chose the APN appropriate to the task, I succeeded. I tried this several times with consistent results.
I think I saw some discussion here about manually selecting the GPRS connection each time so you get the right gateway. But with a bit of configuration work up front, you can make this work automatically. Here's how:
The essence of the solution is that you should have TWO different connection setting groups - one for Internet Browsing and email, and one for MMS. Then, you can have the first one automatically invoked when your application tries to connect to the Internet, and you can have the MMS application automatically select the second connection group when it's trying to send an MMS message.
So -- Most, if not all, of you have a connection group named "T-Mobile GPRS". To examine it, click on:
Start / Settings / Connections and then tap the Connections icon. With the Tasks tab selected, you should see two connection groups listed, along with three choices under each one for tasks you can perform.
Under the connection group named "T-Mobile GPRS", click "Manage existing connections" -- you should be on the "Modem" tab -- if not, select it now.
This page shows a table in which you can list various network connections that this connection group can use to send and receive data. Since it seems that the three APNs that we know about are special purpose (one for WAP/MMS, one for Internet, one for VPN), it does NOT make sense to mix them here and let WM5 try to figure out which is best to use -- you will wind up with inconsistent results (i.e., works sometimes, but not others, seemingly at random).
Instead, since this "T-Mobile GPRS" connection group is for Internet browsing, the one and only connection you want to specify here is one that will use the "internet2" APN.
But first, click on the "Proxy Settings" tab below, and just click the box labeled, "This network connects to the Internet", and make sure the other boxes on the pages are blank (no proxy server specified here!). When you're done, select the "Modem" tab again (you might have to minimize the keyboard display at the bottom to see the tabs).
If you don't have a data connection yet that uses the internet2 APN, you can click on "New", then give it a descriptive name (such as "Internet connection"), select "Cellular Line (GPRS)" as the modem, click "Next", and input "internet2.voicestream.com" as the APN, click "Next" again, leave the user name, password and domain all blank and click "finish".
Click "ok" at the top a couple of times and you should be done with the connection group that gets you to the Internet.
Now - we'll create a separate connection group for MMS:
Go back into "Start / Settings / Connections" and tap the "Connections" icon again. You're back at the "Connections" screen that lists your two most recently defined "connection groups" -- the top one should be "T-Mobile GPRS" since we just worked on it. Click on "Add a new modem connection". Even though this line appears under "T-Mobile GPRS", you'll actually be creating a new and separate connection group.
You'll see a screen entitled, "Make a New Connection". Give it a meaningful name -- I chose "WAP connection". Select "Cellular Line (GPRS)" as the modem, and click "Next". This time, under Access Point Name, specify "wap.voicestream.com". Click next and make sure on the "My Connection" screen that user, password and domain are blank, then click "Finish".
You will now have separate connection groups for Internet Access and for MMS tranmission.
The next step is what makes this work automatically. Close all the windows until you're at the "today" screen again. Click "Start" and then "Messaging". If you don't see "MMS" at the top left of the screen, click the "Menu" button at the lower right, click on "Switch Accounts" and select "MMS".
Click "Menu" again, and then click "MMS Configuration...". You'll see three tabs: "Preferences", "Servers" and "About".
The preferences tab has non-critical choices that you should set to meet your own needs.
On the Servers tab, you should see a single server listed, "T-Mobile MMS" -- this was installed by one of the T-Mobile customizations when you first booted up your MDA. Click on this , and you'll see a screen that details the configurat ion of this server. Here's what you want in the config:
Server Name: non-critical, T-Mobile named it, "T-Mobile MMS", so you should probably leave it at that.
Gateway: 216.155.165.50
Port Number: 8080
Server address: http://215.155.174.84/servlets/mms
...and HERE is where we tell it to automatically switch to our network connection that was set up for MMS:
Where it says, "Connect via:", the default that T-Mobile put in was your old "T-Mobile GPRS" connection. Instead, I clicked the drop-down arrow and selected the new connection that we created way up above that references the "wap.voicestream.com" APN, called something like "MMS Connection".
Sending size limitation as locked at 292k. WAP Version defaults to 2.0, but you can drop it down to 1.2 if you have some reason to do this (I don't).
Once this is all set right, click "OK", and "ok" your way back out of the messaging application.
Now you're ready for a test:
There are many way to initiate an MMS. However you do it, when it starts up, you should see it connecting to GPRS via your "MMS Connection", it will then send your MMS and disconnect from GPRS again after a bit.
Open up PIE again and select a website, and this time you'll see GPRS connecting via your first connection group -- the one that uses "internet2.voicestream.com" as the APN.
You can go back and forth several times -- this setup will select the correct network connection group each time, and work.
The ONLY issue I've seen with this is the following:
If your GPRS connection for one type of activity is still connected when you try launching the other service, it doesn't seem smart enough to force the old connection to disconnect first. So...if your old connection hasn't time out yet, you may have to click on the "G" icon (top of your today screen) and select "disconnect" before starting your other activity. But that's it -- aside from this, all the APN switching is automatic -- and works perfectly.

sounds like what ever your server settings are, your gateway setting is wrong.

Ive tried it 2x already and no worky.......
and now im back to " error syncronizing "

Now its connecting up again , and it connects to (edge) Tmo MMS
but it gets to 66% sent on the status and i get
" next hop connection failed "
Someone just texed me and said " nice pic " so i guess it worked ??

Do you use wifi? When wifi is on my MMS doesn't work.
Did you ever figure out what was happening. I'm having a similar problem. As far as I can tell all the setting you listed above are correct, and I have mine set the same. When I try to send a message it hangs at 87% and never completes. Once it ran up to 99% then I got the "Gateway Timeout" error.
What version of the ARCSoft MMS client are you using?
I cannot get it to send or connect at all unless I use one of the CABs for the settings floating around - then it works, but that causes other NASTY side effects on WM6.
Just the one that came with the rom that I loaded, [02/Nov/2007] TNT.1933, ArcSoft 4.2.8.1 with plug-in and full features. The settings seem to connect, the message just won't complete sending.
I'm not able to get it to connect unless I use the T-Mobile CAB (manually configuring does NOT work) and that breaks data connections when on sync.

MMS Problem

hi guys, i'm on O2 UK, and got the 'HTC Touch Curise' from exspansys.
i've received 2 mms which my phone hasn't downloaded...
not liking this idea of mms and sms in one folder, as when i want to check/change the mms settings just get the sms settings.
the phone automatically done all the settings for me when first turned on, grps works (normally in HSDPA), so not a generally connection problem, but were on my orbit and uni i had 'O2 active' settings which mms connected through that's not set, but as said above there no option (which i've found) to choose a connection setting anyway
has anyone else had the same problem? or got any ideas?

This one's a nightmare! I've been on the phone to O2 for the last three nights in a row for the same problem.
Each time I phone I'm told MMS wasn't properly provisioned on my account, but that they will do it for me, and I then have to wait 24 hours for it to work.
I can now send MMS, but receiving is a bit sporadic. It gets to 99% downloaded and then either it appears, or it just goes blank, and tries again.
So frustrating!
I know it's set-up because i've had this number for 2.5-3 years, it worked on my Exec, my Orbit, so why not now....
did your phone add the "O2 Active" settings now? and can you access settings for mms?

I'm not in the Uk, and not on O2, but I had a similar problem with receiving and sending mms on my HTC cruise, which I bought last week.
Luckily I was able to solve the problem, and I can send and receive mms falwlessly now.
What you have to do is to enter the mms setings manualy, after getting them from your network's website. I'm sure you can also call customer's service and ask them for the settings (what you need is: the gateway no. , port no., server address, and sending limit)
go to start menu > messaging > tap and enter the sms\mms window, tap on menu at the lower right corner, and select mms options, tap on servers at the bottom, there you may see different settings names - tap new, and here you can enter the mms settings that you got from your network. In the "connect via" drop-down list select my ISP, wap version 2.0. Tap done, and make sure you mark your new setting as default.
This should solve the problem. At lease it solved mine
You may need a soft reset after entering the new settings.

Yes it did, and there's a program called "O2 Settings" or similar in the program menu which reloads the settings, which I tried a number of times.
I also entered the settings manually, but they were already all correct.
From a few tests, it seems I can receive an MMS from Vodafone but not from T-Mobile. Need to test more to be 100% sure though.
MMS has been around for years now, you would think they could get it right!

Hello, i can't post in the dev section so have to make my question in here.
The mms is not working on the OdysseyHybrid-v2.71-RC-Delay fix) rom.
They start the data connection, but it not concludes the sending nor the receiving.
In Viper 2.2.0, using GO SMS PRO, you can receive an mms and it will fetch if automatically, but in this rom that doesn't happen.
Other question is the delay fix.In my case, the delay still stands.
Can anyone confirm my two cases? and point me to some solution.
Usually what you describe is a result of bad mms APN configuration.
Try reconfiguration through your service provider's described settings.

I've done that. double checked and nothing. it starts to send with "H" than switches to "3G" and then stops and the MMS is not send.
The "stupid" thing is that, using the default sms app, the mms is sent.
And using the GO SMS PRO no.
I tried to remove the GO SMS PRO, and installed the new version from Play Store, but still the same problem.
You might have to go into GoSMS app and manually set the APN there too.
I don't use GoSMS anymore so nothing in front of me to show you the steps but just look around in settings.

[Q] Smart Call Handling on the Z3

Hi everyone,
I just got the Sony Xperia Z3 (T-Mobile Edition) 2 days. Everything seems to be working fine on it, except the Smart Call Handling option. I have it turned on, and have tested it 6-7 times, but it simply DOESN'T work for me. I don't know why. I even tried resetting my phone a few times but still, nothing.
Is anyone else having this issue? I asked T-Mo and Sony for help, but all they can say is to do a factory reset, which I think is BS since I just got my phone 2 days ago and have spent much time configuring it.
If anyone here has any tips on resolving this issue (that preferably doesn't involve a factory reset), please post or PM me!

I've never heard of smart call and just googled it; it would seem to use proximity detection, phone orientation and shaking, so perhaps you can use the diagnostics tool to see if the aspects of your phone which are required to support those functions, whatever they are, are working.
Settings/about phone/diagnostics/test device/ear proximity
Google maps, then rotate the phone (or spin around slowly) and see if the arrow rotates accordingly.
Not sure how you'd test shaking it.

I tried all that and it does register when I cover the ear piece (vibrates), and in Google Maps the map arrow does rotate, so I dunno what's wrong. I was told by T-Mobile that it's a software issue, so have to take it in to get replaced. Ughhh. I just got it 2 days ago too. lol

Mine doesn't work either. I thought maybe it had something to do with being connected to the 360 but I guess not.
Well see jayr, that's not acceptable to me. That's like buying a car with a turbo option or luxury sound system then finding out oh, it doesn't work. lol It's part of the reason why I bought the Z3. My last phone was the HTC One M8 which also had this feature, but it worked on that phone. I worry that it not working indicates other issues to (maybe) come. I tried everything including using a program from Sony that reinstalls the latest update into the phone from my pc, and that didn't work either. So T-Mobile already has been notified and told me to go to my local T-Mobile Store and replace it, but to test it first there at the store, which I will. If the one they give me there doesn't work (I'll prob try a third one too IF it comes to that lol), I will most definitely be demanding a credit of some kind, and then I'd have to decide if I want to keep the phone or maybe go back to the M8?
I really would rather not do that though. The M8 was only great b/c I'd rooted it which gave me more options, but the Z3 has all the same options as stock (and a better camera), so less work.
I suggest you take yours in too, but that's up to you. Maybe nothing else will go wrong with it, but like I said, it could be an indication that all is not well too.

Are yoi covering the proximity sensor with a screen protector/case?

I don't use (or really believe in) screen protectors, so no. I do have a case on the phone though covering the back side, but the proximity sensor for this option is on the front side of the phone just near the top speaker. I tested it (Settings....About Phone...Diagnostics......Test Device.....Ear Proximity) and it DOES work. I also tested the balance on it by going into Google Maps and confirming that the "you are here" arrow on the map does rotate when point the phone in different directions.
Just for the hell of it, I tried it again w/o the case, and yeah, still a no go. Oh well. Heading back to T-Mo shortly...........................

Update on this issue...............................
So went to T-Mobile Store and the guy there helped me test out the demo phone and it also didn't work on it. So he gave me a new phone, still didn't work. lol But then he said he remembered that when the Z1s came out (which was this past January) through T-Mobile, the first month or two the smart call handling on THAT phone didn't work either until Sony released the first major update via T-Mobile, and then it DID finally function. So he said prob b/t now and the end of the year he's expecting the first major update to be deployed from Sony and that should resolve the issue.
So I guess after we get our first update the odds are very likely that this feature will become active. So make sure to test it out after that update is received. They may even mention it in the update description too, so I guess look for it on there.

Smart Call Handling
So as I said earlier, T-Mobile told me that once I get the next update for my Z3, the Smart Call Handling feature not working issue should most likely be resolved (as it was for the Z1s on T-Mobile as well). That was 4-5 months ago. The update for my Z3 is coming soon, but not sure exactly when.
Two days ago, out of the blue however, I went to take a call, and just for the heck of it, I put the phone up to my ear to see if maybe Smart Call Handling works. It did!! I tried it again right after by having someone call me. Again, it worked just fine, so I thought it was all fixed. But then today I got a new call, and it DIDN'T work again!! I tried a few times after, still, nothing. I don't understand why it began working again just to not be 2 days later. The option is turned on b/c I always leave it on, but it's not working again anymore.
Any ideas how to resolve this? Sony wanted me to do an update using their Sony PC Companion software, but that wipes my phone clean, and I'd try it before with no success, so I'm gonna just skip that. T-Mobile has no resolution for me since it's a specific feature by Sony. I'm still hoping the new soon-to-come update will fix this, but I don't get why it worked for ONE day only to become disabled once again. It makes no sense to me at all.

I use Textra as well since the Z3's stock messenger app clearly CANNOT handle MMS properly. This is what worked for me....................
1) Add a NEW APN (Settings-->More-->Mobile networks-->Access Point Names ((APN))-->push the + sign button) using these settings (and make sure to select it after creating and saving it):

Proxy: not set
Port: not set
Username: not set
Password: not set

2) Disable Stock Messenger app, making sure in "App info" screen (in Settings) that the "Notifications" box is unchecked. (Not sure if unchecking it matters, but I'd do it anyway.) Also, under Stock Messenger's settings, make sure ALL boxes are unchecked as well.
3) In Textra (download this great text SMS/MMS messaging app if you haven't already from Google Play Store), make sure it's your default app, "Use MMS for Group Chats" should be checked, MMS Settings: No Limit, and check the T-Mobile Wifi Calling Fix box too.
4) In Phone settings, under Call Settings, uncheck/disable: VoLTE. For WiFi to work, you must also disable anything else you have enabled on this screen (i.e. Microphone noise suppression, Speaker voice enhancement, etc).
5) You can leave STAMINA mode on (under Power management), however...... only enable the "Extended Standby" option and of course Activation should be at 100%/Always on. When Wi-Fi is on, you must also have whitelisted 2 specific apps in STAMINA under the "Apps active in standby" list: The text msg app you're using (i.e. Textra, etc) and I would also whitelist one under "All others" entitled "Phone/Messaging Storage". Again, this is only for when you have Wi-Fi on. Keep the other stuff disabled in here. With regards to STAMINA mode.......
First, put Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep to "Always" (Settings, Wi-Fi, Advanced). Also, make sure everything else on that page is unchecked/disabled. Turn off STAMINA mode. Go into Settings, Apps, All, Extended Standby Mode Controller, Clear Data AND Cache. Then go to your text app's (Textra, etc) "App info" page (on same Apps "All" screen) and clear ONLY the cache, then close out the app itself (3D button to the right of the virtual Home button, swipe the text app off the screen). Reset. When you come back, follow what I said above, including turning STAMINA mode back on ("queue background data" will be enabled. Leave it that way!) Make sure that when you turn STAMINA mode on that the pop-up shows up describing it. If it doesn't at any point, then repeat this paragraph's instructions. What I just said here MAY resolve any lingering MMS issues, and also resolve any issues regarding with STAMINA mode not kicking in too. When I did this my phone spit out a few "missed" incoming MMS messages out all at once. And the battery seems to be last longer too.
It seems that MMS messages will def show up if Wi-Fi is on, but it will take longer to show up if screen is off. Maybe 3-5 minutes longer.
If you have any questions, let me know. I'm still testing this out so I may make more changes. We'll see.
P.S. For whatever reason, if you're getting an MMS message from someone with an iPhone, and they have "iMessage" turned on, the Z3 will NOT receive the message. So you have to ask people who have iPhones and are sending you MMS messages to kindly turn it off, and then all should be fine.

Well I tried to use the original APN and leave other features on........for me it still wasn't working right. It isn't just VoLTE from what I can see. When I did EVERYTHING I said in my post, all the MMS texts I wasn't getting FINALLY are coming through, and yes, Smart Call Handling works too. I tried doing just portions of what I said, but it wasn't 100%. It's just so crazy how that stuff affects the phone. I blame T-Mobile though not Sony for this. I know when they get the phone they spend time testing it to make sure it works smoothly with their network. Apparently, they didn't test or configure it enough b/c we really shouldn't have to be going through all this JUST to make the phone work right. I mean, a new APN? Really? But it was necessary to make it all work.
Regarding getting MMS messages from an iPhone............................this is the ONE thing I still can't resolve completely. The issue is when the person with the iPhone sends a GROUP PHOTO TEXT (MMS) to ppl and you're included, and if they have "iMessage" on, my phone WILL NOT get the pic, only the text (words). But if you ask them to kindly turn iMessage off, everything comes in just fine, pic included. So let anyone you know with an iPhone to kindly turn off iMessage, and you should be good to go as I am! :good:

I use Textra since the Z3's stock messenger app clearly CANNOT handle MMS properly. This is what worked for me....................
Before setting up your Z3 to be able to handle MMS messages correctly, as well as enabling Smart Call Handling to ACTUALLY work, you must do the following which will do both a factory reset AND re-update your phone. My software must’ve been corrupted at some point because after doing this, my phone worked much better. The battery life had gotten really bad but now it’s back to incredible again. My phone works 100% for the first time ever (just no VoLTE ((for now at least)), but who cares, I don't get it in my area yet anyway!!
** Sony PC Companion Instructions:
We have an extended guide that should help you fix the issue on your phone, please follow the instructions carefully:

Run the software and install it
Turn the phone off and disconnect it from the computer
1. No matter what the program says do not connect the phone until you complete step 9

3. On the next page Click on "Start" under "Phone Software Update"
At this point if you get an error stating that "Unable to install update components" or "Server is busy" , then please proceed to step 12
4. The program will say that there is no phone connected. Click on the option below that reads: "Repair my phone" the program will issue you a warning about the content that you will lose during the update
5. Choose the option to continue.
6. The program will issue a final message warning you of possible data lost during the update. Click on the checkmark and then on "Next".
7. After that, the program will download the necessary information (5 to 6 minutes) and it will present you with a list of phones.
8. Choose your phones model from the list then click on "Next" then you will see a new section telling you how to connect the phone. (don't connect it yet) (YOU CAN FIND YOUR PHONE’S MODEL # BY DOING THIS: SETTINGS-->ABOUT PHONE-->MODEL NUMBER)
At this point the phone must be off and disconnected from the PC.
9. Connect the cable to the PC not to the phone, then while pressing and holding the indicated button (in the steps on screen an specific button will be shown for you to press on the phone) connect the cable to the phone and keep holding the indicated button until the program says "the update of your phone has started..." (in some cases a message of "Installing drivers" will appear before the message of "the update of your phone has started..." is shown.)
10. If you failed to follow the steps correctly the phone will turn on and it will request that you "Proceed with the following steps, slide down the notification bar", If this happens disconnect the phone from the cable, turn it off and repeat from step 9).
11. If the phone is connected properly, PC Companion will proceed with the update ( It will tell you to let go of the back key) then wait for the update to finish and follow instructions on screen to disconnect the unit.

3. Start PC Companion again and try to do the software unlock process once more.

2) ENABLE Stock Messenger app, making sure in "App info" screen (in Settings) that the "Notifications" box is unchecked. (Not sure if unchecking it matters, but I'd do it anyway to avoid double notification of incoming texts.) Also, under Stock Messenger's settings, make sure ALL boxes are unchecked as well.
3) In Textra (download this great text SMS/MMS messaging app if you haven't already from Google Play Store), make sure it's your default app, under Settings, "Use MMS for Group Chats" should be checked, MMS Settings: No Limit, and check the T-Mobile Wifi Calling Fix box too.
4) In Phone settings, under Call Settings, uncheck/disable: VoLTE. (VERY IMPORTANT!) (Note: Maybe after Lollipop is deployed you can try enabling it and see if MMS and Smart Call Handling work again, but there’s no guarantee of that.)
5) You can leave STAMINA mode on (under Settings-->Power management), however...... only enable the "Extended Standby" option and of course Activation should be at 100%/Always on. Also make sure “Queue background data” is enabled too. You must also have whitelisted 2 specific apps in STAMINA under the "Apps active in standby" list: The text msg app you're using (i.e. Textra, etc…. the stock app will NOT be listed though) and I would also whitelist one under "All others" entitled "Phone/Messaging Storage". Keep the other stuff disabled in here. With regards to STAMINA mode:
5.1) OPTIONAL: IF AT ANY POINT STAMINA MODE IS NOT WORKING (i.e., WITH IT ON AT 100% POWER, IT SAYS ON STAMINA MODE SETTINGS PAGE THAT YOU HAVE ANYTHING LESS THAN 5 DAYS AND 3-4 HOURS FOR ESTIMATED BATTERY TIME), THEN FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS: Turn off STAMINA mode. Go into Settings, Apps, All, Extended Standby Mode Controller, Clear Data AND Cache. Then go to your text app's (Textra, stock, etc….do it for all texting apps you have) "App info" page (on same Apps "All" screen) and clear ONLY the cache, then close out the app itself (3D button to the right of the virtual Home button, swipe the text app(s) off the screen). Reset. When you come back, follow what I said above, including turning STAMINA mode back on. Then do as instructed in “5)” above.
6) Put “Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep” to "Only when plugged in" (Settings--> Wi-Fi--> Advanced). Also, make sure everything else on that page is unchecked/disabled.
7) OPTIONAL: IF HAVING ISSUES RECEIVING TEXTS FROM IPHONE USERS WHO HAVE iMessage ENABLED ON THEIR IPHONE, THEN FOLLOW THIS: And lastly, there’s the “iMessage” issue ppl like myself are/were having (also those with LG G2 I’ve heard have this issue too) where when someone with an iPhone sends you an MMS pic text msg while their iMessage option is on, you don’t get the text…….. try this (a T-Mobile store rep told me this and it worked!): send YOURSELF an MMS photo text msg but include at least one other phone # as well too. If you’re using Textra or anything besides just the stock text app, then do this for EACH app. If that is the case, then do it via stock app first then Textra (easier this way). If you receive the pic successfully, then ask anyone you know with an iPhone to send you an MMS message (preferably having a 3rd phone # in on it too, but not sure if you need to) with iMessage ON. If you receive it, then it worked. If not, try this again.
What I just said here MAY resolve any lingering MMS issues, and also resolve any issues regarding STAMINA mode not kicking in too.
It seems that MMS messages will def show up if Wi-Fi is on, but it will take longer to show up if screen is off. Maybe 3-5 minutes longer.

[Q] Anyone with a previous Xperia Z phone have STAMINA mode issues initially too?

Does anyone who's had the Z/Z1/Z1s/Z2 recall initially have STAMINA mode issues that were corrected with the phone's first MAJOR update?? If so, please tell us more. I'm having issues and I'd like to know if perhaps there's a history of updates correcting this or not.

Just got my z3 few days ago. When I do activate stamina mod my mobile data remains active even in stand by. It shoudn't or I miss something? Some help please! Thanks!!

I use Textra since the Z3's stock messenger app clearly CANNOT handle MMS properly. This is what worked for me....................
Before setting up your Z3 to be able to handle MMS messages correctly, as well as enabling Smart Call Handling to ACTUALLY work, you must do the following which will do both a factory reset AND re-update your phone. My software must’ve been corrupted at some point because after doing this, my phone worked much better. The battery life had gotten really bad but now it’s back to incredible again. My phone works 100% for the first time ever (just no VoLTE ((for now at least)), but who cares, I don't get it in my area yet anyway!!

Run the software and install it
Turn the phone off and disconnect it from the computer
1. No matter what the program says do not connect the phone until you complete step 9
2. In the welcome screen you will see the different modules available for you including the "Support Zone" option. Click on "Start" below it.
3. On the next page Click on "Start" under "Phone Software Update"
At this point if you get an error stating that "Unable to install update components" or "Server is busy" , then please proceed to step 12
4. The program will say that there is no phone connected. Click on the option below that reads: "Repair my phone" the program will issue you a warning about the content that you will lose during the update
5. Choose the option to continue.
6. The program will issue a final message warning you of possible data lost during the update. Click on the checkmark and then on "Next".
7. After that, the program will download the necessary information (5 to 6 minutes) and it will present you with a list of phones.
8. Choose your phones model from the list then click on "Next" then you will see a new section telling you how to connect the phone. (don't connect it yet) (YOU CAN FIND YOUR PHONE’S MODEL # BY DOING THIS: SETTINGS-->ABOUT PHONE-->MODEL NUMBER)
At this point the phone must be off and disconnected from the PC.
9. Connect the cable to the PC not to the phone, then while pressing and holding the indicated button (in the steps on screen an specific button will be shown for you to press on the phone) connect the cable to the phone and keep holding the indicated button until the program says "the update of your phone has started..." (in some cases a message of "Installing drivers" will appear before the message of "the update of your phone has started..." is shown.)
10. If you failed to follow the steps correctly the phone will turn on and it will request that you "Proceed with the following steps, slide down the notification bar", If this happens disconnect the phone from the cable, turn it off and repeat from step 9).
11. If the phone is connected properly, PC Companion will proceed with the update ( It will tell you to let go of the back key) then wait for the update to finish and follow instructions on screen to disconnect the unit.

1. Close PC Companion
2. Install Java from: http://www.java.com
3. Start PC Companion again and try to do the software unlock process once more.
Note: If you wish only to update the unit wait for the program to open and then select the quick link on the upper left corner that says "Update Phone/Tablet" and follow the instructions to perform the update. (the PC may request for the phone to be placed in Mass Storage mode. Do this by going into Settings>Xperia>Connectivity>USB connection mode)
