Here's a good one for any devs. I have been fussing with this for 3 days and am at my wits end.
I noticed the other day there was a software update from VZW for my droid X. That night I get home launch ADB name all the renamed .apk bloatware back to normal, and DL & install the update.
After doing so I as expected lost root. No biggie I thought as I Had rooted my phone previously with little effort. Long story short after numerous attempts and now several different methods including z4, 1 click root, etc... I still am unable to regain root access, and am stuck with read only access to the file system.
I have posted on a coupe different forums with this query, and it seems to be a mixed problem. some are able to regain root, others are like me and locked out completely.
So.. the question here lies in this??? is there something VZW or Motorola have done with this update to disallow rooting, and if so is it possible to roll back my OS to stock 2.2 Froyo prior to this update? Alternatively does anyone else know of any tricks I may have overlooked in successfully rooting my DX.
Thanks in advance!!!
Same here. Tried z4 and onion root. Tried the terminal emulator method. Nothing works.

No, nothing they did. It happened because you accepted an OTA while rooted. Every root guide on here should tell you never to accept an ota when rooted, or you could permanently lose root.
i'm in the same boat as the poster. i accepted it while rooted, unrooted and then installed it. It appears i am locked out from rooting.

worked for me
I've been searching and I've seen some posts about it already, but I'd like some clarification if possible.
My cousin has a Droid Razr HD from Verizon and it's running 9.16.6 currently after using mattgroffl's utility. Prior to that, it had the 9.18.79 update on it. As it stands, the phone is rooted and Superuser is running properly, has been updated, etc. However, when he tries to run the Motocalypse bootloader unlock APK, it does nothing. Is this do to the 9.18 update being installed previously? Is there a known workaround or one in process? This is more curiosity than anything. To me, if the phone was "flashed" back to 9.16.6, then 9.18.79's "files" shouldn't exist... Unless my logic is entirely flawed.
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time to those who post!
I might be wrong here but from what I've read, if you accepted the latest update, you can no longer unlock the bootloader. But obviously it is rootable.

I've been out of the development loop for a pretty long time (1.5 years) and am looking to update my phone. Long story short I have the Razr HD (926) rooted running 4.4.2. I get prompted for a system update (183.46.15.en.US) but it fails every time (likely because I'm rooted). It's been like this for a while and I'm sick of getting notified of the update every day.
I'd like to update to the latest but I'm not sure what that is. I'm familiar with RSD lite so I guess I am just looking for the latest working version I can update to. I've searched around the forums and saw threads for KitKat, but I've been out of the loop for so long I don't even know if it has been officially released yet or if there is even an official/unofficial build for the Razr HD.
Sorry for all the noob questions, all these threads are a lot to take in when I've been away for so long whenI don't know all the lingo and what version I should get.

As you say, your device fails the OTA because it's rooted. I would strongly suggest that you unlock your device's bootloader (its warranty is probably approaching EOL anyway if it hasn't already). To do that, the best possible tutorial would be here, imho. If for some reason the .15 firmware were to get installed on your device (again unlikely, since it's rooted), you would not be able to unlock its bootloader, because there is no known method to accomplish that atm. So, my advice would be to unlock your BL with the towelroot method, flash the most recent .15 FXZ and enjoy.

Awesome, thanks for your help. Is there a more recent version I should flash or is .15 the latest?

.15 is the latest and last update from Moto for this device.
I want to install a custom Lollipop ROM on my phone, but even after days of sifting through years and various iterations of information and methods, I'm pretty confused.
I have a Razr Maxx HD. I believe the model is XT926M. I bought my phone in December 2012 from Verizon and it's running Android 4.1.2 OTA (stock) currently. The currently installed ROM is 9.18.94.XT926.Verizon.en.US. I'm not using a custom recovery. The bootloader is UNLOCKED and the phone is rooted! I used the Motopocalypse exploit method from around April of 2013. I've been extremely happy with the stability of 4.1.2, after the lockup/freeze/crash bug was fixed, which is why I haven't been quick to upgrade to anything else until now. I've also been afraid to mess with the phone out of fear of doing something wrong and creating more trouble for myself than it is worth (such as a soft brick from a failed OTA upgrade). I've seen enough posts about something going wrong or experiencing glitches in flashing methods which required workarounds that I want to ask before taking any action.
So, now I want to install a recent ROM free of Verizon's bloatware, in this case CM12. However, I can't seem to find any solid guide targeted at my scenario. Most of the information I find is either outdated (old methods, old software), or for the XT925 rather than the XT926(M), or the wrong country/carrier. Additionally, I know the newer ROMs are only available for KKBL, but I'm pretty sure that I'm still on JJBL if I'm on 4.1.2 OTA, and I can't find any recent or relevant guide for getting me out of where I am starting. If I was already on KKBL, I know all I would need to do is install a custom recovery and then install a custom ROM, but I'm at a disadvantage because I'm not even there yet and it's probably the part that's confusing me most.
I don't care about losing any data on my phone - I want to start completely fresh. The only thing I've done is create a nandroid backup (using the Online Nandroid app) for both CWM and TWRP recoveries. What next?
I don't know where to begin. Can someone help steer me in the right direction? I'd greatly appreciate it if you could be as specific as possible with versions and/or links to files I would need. Thanks!
Since Lollipop was finally released for Verizon Moto G prepaid. I am wondering if it is now more possible to root and unlock the bootloader without paying anything. Lots of people got the phone black Friday last year and wants to root it since it was a cheap phone to get. So lots of people are hoping for a new method for it. Please reply if there is any new info, methods, or anything. Thx
I'm holding off on upgrading in case I get a way to get root on 444, but the nag screen for updating is getting on my nerves so bad I may take it just to make it stop...
I have some very specific reasons for wanting to keep this phone, if only I could get root, then sunshine it, then get a custom 5.1 rom... Ah the dream
I updated my phone to 5.1 on Tuesday (when it came out) and I was wondering the same thing too. I hope someone can find a way to do it

Did you try temp root with Kingoroot? Supposedly it works on 4.4.4 and apparently not on 5.1... once you have temp root then onto Sunshine and once your bootloader is unlocked you can even take the 5.1 OTA or for that matter any ROM

Kingroot has varying degree's of success for me, but the one constant for me is that my temp root has never once lasted long enough for sunshine's purposes. The tests simply take too long, and my root is gone before it reaches a conclusive point.
About all its good for in my case is to backup some files, or tweak a few other quick settings that can be done in less then a minute

I hear you... so if there is currently no root for 4.4.4 and we don't know of anyone working on a root I am not sure what there is to wait for...
Because if I do upgrade, I can't downgrade. And knowing my luck as soon as I get 5.1 a 444 root will come out. Another issue is I'm worried about storage consumption when it moves from dalvik to art runtime. It's my experience that using 5.1s ART system will increase all file sizes across the board, I'm already strapped for space.

Don't make the rookie mistake !!! It's really trivial to block the nagging upgrade screens. You'll have to use adb from your PC and run something like Debloater ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294 ). Then find a program named com.motorola.ccc.ota on XT1028, and block it.
I am still hoping that one day we'll get full RW root with 4.4.4 (for free ).
Good point, didn't think to try this. Also I'm holding out hope for that chrome for Android exploit that was revealed in Tokyo last week at PacSec. When last I checked no details yet, but no patch by Google yet either.

I am still waiting to see if there is a way to unlock/root Verizon Moto G Lollipop (XT1028). Any luck?
tired of this phone
I'm sorry to say it but I think that it's a lost cause and its a shame its a great phone and it was a learning experience for me. I'll never buy a prepaid phone from Verizon again I'm moving on to the newest moto g. From what I've been hearing MOTOs are going to be phased out eventually by lenovo so I think it's best to upgrade before its too late. Its just my opinion but I think it's a foolish move on their part cause the moto series is one of the best out there for the price I've had Samsung, HTC,and a few other brands that aren't even worth mentioning (zte/kyocera/BlackBerry/I phone) and Motorola is the best value by far the only downside is the locked bootloaders it's a shame no one is working on the xt 1028 it was a great little phone
Kingroot 4.8 works. But only temporary root. and sometimes later everything crashes
System cant be writable, still
I still have my xt1028 and keep hoping people will report root. I've intentionally avoided upgrading it to 5.1 hoping I can get root 1 way or the other
My phone I bought to replace this one (VS880, LG G Vista for Verizon) was able to be rooted, its a crying shame this one still cant be rooted.
I was about to root it after installing busy box (no root) and then running the king-root app a few times after that i was able to root it but only a temp root, however having the temp root i was about to uninstall some of the unnecessary system apps but i would like to have a full root on this phone and a custom ROM i know it is possible because i have been searching the internet for years looking for a way to root it and i have found custom roms and recoverys for it so its possible to root we just need to find how because how and why would custom roms and recoverys be made for this phone if you can't flash then so there has to be something out there that can help.
I'm so sad of hearing this, I just got this phone ( xt1028 ) as a gift two days ago and I was quick to figured out it needs to be rooted because it don't have SD slot so all the verizon crapp can be removed, this news just upset me.
New update??
I upgraded to 5.1 and notice there is an update pending. Anyone know what they are patching? I doubt they would push out another update for this phone unless something is vulnerable.
I guess if obtaining root was possible, someone would have done it by now. I would've liked to install a Marshmallow ROM, but 5.1 works great, so that's something.
Why
I'm always do what ever you said but I didn't find anything I have search
