I've been searching and I've seen some posts about it already, but I'd like some clarification if possible.
My cousin has a Droid Razr HD from Verizon and it's running 9.16.6 currently after using mattgroffl's utility. Prior to that, it had the 9.18.79 update on it. As it stands, the phone is rooted and Superuser is running properly, has been updated, etc. However, when he tries to run the Motocalypse bootloader unlock APK, it does nothing. Is this do to the 9.18 update being installed previously? Is there a known workaround or one in process? This is more curiosity than anything. To me, if the phone was "flashed" back to 9.16.6, then 9.18.79's "files" shouldn't exist... Unless my logic is entirely flawed.
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time to those who post!
I might be wrong here but from what I've read, if you accepted the latest update, you can no longer unlock the bootloader. But obviously it is rootable.

Here's a good one for any devs. I have been fussing with this for 3 days and am at my wits end.
I noticed the other day there was a software update from VZW for my droid X. That night I get home launch ADB name all the renamed .apk bloatware back to normal, and DL & install the update.
After doing so I as expected lost root. No biggie I thought as I Had rooted my phone previously with little effort. Long story short after numerous attempts and now several different methods including z4, 1 click root, etc... I still am unable to regain root access, and am stuck with read only access to the file system.
I have posted on a coupe different forums with this query, and it seems to be a mixed problem. some are able to regain root, others are like me and locked out completely.
So.. the question here lies in this??? is there something VZW or Motorola have done with this update to disallow rooting, and if so is it possible to roll back my OS to stock 2.2 Froyo prior to this update? Alternatively does anyone else know of any tricks I may have overlooked in successfully rooting my DX.
Thanks in advance!!!
Same here. Tried z4 and onion root. Tried the terminal emulator method. Nothing works.

No, nothing they did. It happened because you accepted an OTA while rooted. Every root guide on here should tell you never to accept an ota when rooted, or you could permanently lose root.
i'm in the same boat as the poster. i accepted it while rooted, unrooted and then installed it. It appears i am locked out from rooting.

worked for me
So, in a week I'm getting my RAZR HD from Canada (not sure if it was Fido or Rogers), unlocked and unused. Now, I would like to do some modifications to it, and I need some help since I'm coming from Galaxy Nexus, where everything is just thousand times easier...
Basically, I just want my device being on JB and rooted. I think it will be on ICS when it arives.
I saw the methods to root the phone, and I will use the VooDoo RootKeeper app for it. However, if there is an uncomplicated method to root the phone even if already on JB, please feel free to tell me.
Another thing - having in mind that I still don't want to flash ROMs on my new phone, just root it, do I need to unlock the bootloader? I am quite sure that Canadian warranty doesn't mean crap in Serbia, but I just don't think I need that just now if it's not necessary for just rooting the device on JB.
So, simplified - do I need to unlock the BL for rooting, and is there an easier method do root the phone on JB than the one with VooDoo app?
Thanks guys!
Have I placed the question in the wrong section or what..?
Follow the thread for bootloader unlock... Once you have that done install recovery... After that you can follow the thread which has the given steps for upgrading from ICS to JB.. For the fido and Rogers official hasn't been released yet so you have to make your own sbf file to flash... To root that you just flash the supersu package
Thanks! Appreciated.
Sorry my friens, just two more questions:
1) Is there really a thread for unlocking the bootloader, or I use the Moto site, as everybody suggests?
2) You said I should make my own sbf file? Is that something special or am I a bit unfamiliar with that file type? As far as I know, .zipr files are being flashed through CWM.
Thanks again!
Sooo, sbf files?
I'm sorry if I'm spamming a bit, but this is really important to me. Thanks.
I'm looking at a phone on craigslist to buy and it looks like the guy is still on the old build from Feb., but I want to be sure that it is still bootloader-unlockable.
I've been reading that the 9.18.79 update fixes the bootloader exploit, and I wanted to know if there is a way to tell if a phone has ever taken the update. I understand that you can still RSD to an earlier build with 9.18.79, but your bootloader will no longer be exploitable.
Is there any other way to tell other than the build #?
Thank you!
Try to unlock the bootloader.

I think he's asking if there is a way to tell before he actually buys it and finds out that it's not unlockable...

Ask for a picture of the about phone. You will be able to tell by the baseband number. If it ends in .15P, it has taken the update.

... still trying to unlock
I was going to post this as a new question, but I'm somewhat in a similar situation except I already own my MAXX HD and I did take the 9.18.79 update a while back before doing any research on rooting/unlocking this phone.
I just finally got it rooted but cannot find a difinitive answer on if I can unlock it or not. This is my 3rd android phone, so I'm not a totally new to this but certainly no expert as it was waaaaay easier with my HTC phones...
To root it, I spent several days painstakingly reading threads and forums, found and tried the motochopper 1.2 for the MAXX HD w/ 9.18.79 to root the phone. It failed to root after a few attempts... so then I made puppy-dog eyes at my husband who's a much better geek then I am, and also a Linux developer. We put our heads together, he spent a few mins tweaking the run.sh script from motochopper 1.2 (we're both on Linux PCs so I can't vouch for the windows run.bat file). We ended up having to download and flash a older system.img file from a stock JB rom file onto my phone after a motochopper attempt failed and it kept getting stuck at a Fastboot flash failed screen. The system.img he flashed put me on System Version to 9.16.6 (as seen in screenshot attached). Then, we ran the motochopper 1.2 exploit again, with his tweaked run.sh script, and it finally succeeded. It definitely isn't a process for a first time rooter, as we hit a lot of road bumps I would never have figured out alone.
To unlock it, I tried the latest Motopocolypse method and it failed. The specific error message I got was:
[+] TrustZone target address resolved to 2a020a02
[-] TrustZone write failed: -11.[*]
This was just last night and as of this moment, we don't have any ideas how to proceed or what else to try. It would be great if someone could offer some suggestions and maybe I'll have an answer for CoolSaber57.
Also -someone suggested looking at the baseband number "You will be able to tell by the baseband number. If it ends in .15P, it has taken the update." Well, my baseband number ends in .09P and I know I had taken the update.... so that's that...
I'm attaching my about phone screenshots and voodoo just fyi...
Maybe the baseband ending in .09P is what you get if you've taken the 9.18.79 update and then downgraded back to 9.16.6. That's what I did and my XT926 baseband now ends in .09P.

That's very possible, I cannot say I looked at my baseband version before we started messing with the phone, so I don't know if it changed.

What Android and System version were you on when you unlocked your bootloader? What method/tool did you use?
Thanks!

I've been out of the development loop for a pretty long time (1.5 years) and am looking to update my phone. Long story short I have the Razr HD (926) rooted running 4.4.2. I get prompted for a system update (183.46.15.en.US) but it fails every time (likely because I'm rooted). It's been like this for a while and I'm sick of getting notified of the update every day.
I'd like to update to the latest but I'm not sure what that is. I'm familiar with RSD lite so I guess I am just looking for the latest working version I can update to. I've searched around the forums and saw threads for KitKat, but I've been out of the loop for so long I don't even know if it has been officially released yet or if there is even an official/unofficial build for the Razr HD.
Sorry for all the noob questions, all these threads are a lot to take in when I've been away for so long whenI don't know all the lingo and what version I should get.

As you say, your device fails the OTA because it's rooted. I would strongly suggest that you unlock your device's bootloader (its warranty is probably approaching EOL anyway if it hasn't already). To do that, the best possible tutorial would be here, imho. If for some reason the .15 firmware were to get installed on your device (again unlikely, since it's rooted), you would not be able to unlock its bootloader, because there is no known method to accomplish that atm. So, my advice would be to unlock your BL with the towelroot method, flash the most recent .15 FXZ and enjoy.

Awesome, thanks for your help. Is there a more recent version I should flash or is .15 the latest?

.15 is the latest and last update from Moto for this device.
I'm sure this is covered here more than once but my searches are going nowhere.
I've got a RAZR MAXX HD with 4.4.2 182.46.15 (yes, one eight two, not three). A) how do I root it? B) Is there a pathway to 5.n.n? I need root (for TI and killing bloatware), I'd like Lollipop.
AFAIK, I'm SOL on unlocking the bootloader. How, then, can I move to CM? If at all?
I bought the phone, privately, as it is (no backups or older whatever). I do have the original USB cable (still in an unopened bag!).
So... how screwed am I?
BUMP. I get that this is probably a "we have answered this question too many times!" question, but the record is still fuzzy, at least for me, about whether or not all 4.4.2 installs are cursed or not. And whether my install is cursed, too.
91 looks and nobody has an answer???
Ok, first of all, you cannot get 5.0 on this device unless you are on 182.46.10 which the bootloader is unlockable but since you are on the latest firmware there is no way unlock the bootloader which means no cwm, which also means no custom rom, which also means no 5.0! You can use a tool called KingRoot but it doesnt support super SU. another method is hydrogen peroxide which you can google it.
I'm pretty well bleached out as it is, so worrying about roots with hydrogen peroxide doesn't take me very far. But, hey, nice bit of humor.
If SuperSU doesn't work with this scheme, where does that leave me with TI, Build Prop Editor, FX, etc.?
It looks as though rooting the MAXX HD is like pushing on a rope - not real productive.
What phone, comparable in size and specs, /is/ rootable, etc. Without resorting hydrogen peroxide?
You can root it cleanly with hydrogen peroxide, but before starting that process you must reflash to the 183.46.15 firmware. There's a couple of lines in the flashing file that must be commented out; it's all detailed carefully in the hydrogen peroxide thread. I did it, it worked properly the first time and each time after that (I was playing with some experimental stuff that put me in a bootloop a few times and had to reflash to recover.)
Then you can install Titanium Backup and whatever else; I like Nova Launcher and Xposed Framework with GravityBox.
I don't understand why everyone's so afraid of the hydrogen peroxide method. If you read carefully and follow the steps correctly it works. If you try to flash or root or unlock *any* phone using *any* method without reading carefully and following the steps correctly, it's probably going to fail and cause big problems; that's how stuff like this works.
Whoa! You weren't just messing with me about hydrogen peroxide! I tried googling on it and got lots of info about H²O² but zip about anything that could be flashed, etc. From what you're saying I should be searching inside XDA.
Point me at what I need to know to get back to 183.46.15. BTW, I thought it was .10 not . 15 that was easier to work with. Yes? No?
OK, I'll be quiet for a while. I think this is the thread you were pointing me at. It seems to answer all of my questions. I'll be back once I brick or root. [/hopeful grin]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-razr-hd/general/root-droid-razr-hd-xt926-183-46-15-t3062040
OK, I lied. What is an FXZ? Looking at what I've seen so far, I guess I don't really care, but I am curious... Now I'll be quiet. For a while. Maybe. Sorta. I guess.
I rooted my XT926 using Hydrogen Peroxyde. Look at this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-razr-hd/general/index-motorola-droid-razr-hd-2015-t3167557
Yes, that is the post I used for instructions.
Start near the bottom, just after the screenshot, at the section "Flashing Firmware if Root fails" to get your device up to 183.x before you try and run the hydrogen peroxide stuff. There's a dead link there at "Using RSD Lite", it has moved to http://motofirmware.center/topic/22-how-to-restore-your-device-with-motorola-firmware-plus-unbrick/ instead, you'll need it.
You'll probably have to work through the section "Editing xml" as well, if RSD Lite returns an error during the flashing process. There's a script file with the firmware that has a couple of lines of instruction that causes problems for RSD Lite, you have to remove those lines and then it should work.
Once you're up and running on 183.46.15, then you can go to the top of the post and work through the rooting process.
If there's anything you don't understand, ask and I'll try and explain.
P.S. You shouldn't need any FXZ files for this process.
P.P.S. The x.10 firmware is preferred, because it has an exploit that will allow you to unlock the bootloader. But, since you're already at x.15, you're in a catch-22: The locked bootloader won't let you downgrade to older firmware for "security reasons", and you can't unlock the bootloader without using the older firmware. Nobody's found a method yet to bootstrap this process.
You da man!!! Thanks!
BTW, how do I bump up your thanks counter from here???
