My daughter has HTC Hero from Sprint running the latest 2.1 version and I wanted to upgrade her phone to 2.2 with all of sprint features like TV etc.
I started to read the forums, looks like there are too many way methods to do things.
Can someone just create a sticky, step by step to newbes on what to do in order to bring the Sprint Hero from 2.1 to 2.2.
which distribution is recommended?
will the upgrade causes a problem with the service?
Get the AOSP Rom, push the sprint apk's using adb.
Its easy..

First off you have to root your phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296), then install a custom recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1), then flash the ROM .zip in the recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782320), then flash a kernal in recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756774). This is no easy task since froyo was never released for the hero. good luck and if you have any questions...ask. Once you get that working then you can worry about sprint apps
First you want to do this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
That is called rooting your phone, it's a process which sort of "breaks" the security on the phone, which allows you to do alot more things than usual to your phone. The one thing you want the root to do is allow you to flash a custom ROM (Which is basically a new Operating System for your phone).
If you want a nice, fast, and unthemed 2.2 operating system, than you want to flash this rom on your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782320
This is pretty much the OS you want.
Unfortunately you can't do this without a rooted phone. Sprint has left us CDMA users in the dark providing us with no good updates (with the exception of a few bug fixes once in a while), so the Dev's at xda-deelopers have blessed us by creating there own ROM's (Operating Systems) so that we can enjoy the benefits of newer Android Operating Systems.
And if you need a guide to flash a new ROM to your phone, its right here.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-hero/
Good luck man, it looks overwhelming at first, but it becomes very easy once you get it down.
EDIT ** To answer your question, no it doesn't mess up your Sprint service. In fact, theres a thread somewhere that has a new radio that gives somewhat better signal.
Next time lets learn to read, im not trying to be a **** or nothing but this section is for ANDROID DEVELOPMENT ONLY, i see no dev'ing going on here. Theres seperate sub-forum called "Questions and Answers" just for things like this. Also if you would have search theres tons of stickys for "Noobs". But reason it bothers us the most is theres a sticky up there that says STOP posting non-development crap here and people come do it anyways. Im bothered by it because were all adults here....well most of us....and we have trouble reading.
Have there been any rumors or murmurs of any development on any ROMs or kernels for the Echo?

Not a one that I am aware of. I sent a message to the XDA Admins regarding an Echo section, but nothing has ever come of it.

Ahah, thanks.
I guess there's no interest in it. D:

Yeah, that's true.
I still don't trust it too much considering there isn't a Clockwork Recovery Mod or any method of flashing those to the phone AFAIK.
Rooting Yes! It's Great! But lack of backup util is scary
Yes, my Echo has been rooted for four months using Z4root.
I haven't tried to find an alternate ROM because, frankly, the stock one is so much better than anything HTC ever offered me.
My main interest in rooting the Echo was to get rid of all the dumb Sprint apps and, most important, extend battery life by using power saving apps only available with rotted phones My favorites being SetCPU and and Timeout3G.
Also, if you like to blacklist callers without ever hearing half or three quarters of a ringtone before the call if blocked, Root Call Blocker is the best blocker in the Market, but as the name implies it is for rooted phones only.
Anyway, all these things work great and I can get through an entire day (most of the time) on one recharge ... even more impressive I can leave the phone off the recharger at night and start the next day having lost only three to five percent of the charge ... as opposed to 40-50 percent before rooting.
The problem -- and its a very real problem -- is that there is no way that I have found to do a Nandroid or other complete system/recovery backup for the Echo.
When I open ROM Manager Premium it tells me there is a new version of Clockword MOD available, but, of course, it's lying ... at least in regard to the Echo.
If I try to use the backup current rom option in ROM Manager it reboots and freezes on the green symbol with the yield sign and need to be hard rebooted by pulling the battery.
Now, to make matters worse, Sprint has started downloading auto firmware updates that may or may not brick rooted phones. Since my phone is now working perfectly the way I want it to I wouldn't install the updates anyway if I could avoid it but avoiding it is the issue ... there is a toggle to turn off checking for and auto downloading Android updates but none for eliminating auto firmware updates.
So two questions?
1. Has any figured out how to backup the Echo?
2. Does anyone know how to disable auto system updates?
Thanks
In answer to your 2nd question, if you are rooted, install File Expert, hit menu button, settings, file explorer settings and check root explorer.
exit file expert (should not have an icon in the status bar)
open file expert, hit back 2 times, goto system, hit menu button, more, mount, mount as read write.
goto etc, security, long press on otacerts.zip, file operations, rename, otacerts.zip.bak.
it will tell you about the update and download, but wont install because it cant validate.
if someone doesnt post a reply to your 1st question by tomorrow, I will tell you how to do that too, but right now I am going to bed...this post may not make a lot of sense, but hopefully you can figure it out, if not, let me know and I will clean up tomorrow.
Sorry it took me so long to thank you
I've been overseas and out of touch ... your solution fir disabling auto system updates is great ... thank you.
Do you know if anyone has figured out how to do a Nandroid type backup on the Echo yet?
For the record, I love this phone more every day ... which is quite the reverse from my experience with various HTC and Samsung smart phones.
Yes, the release Echo is a bit prototypy, but there will, hopefully, be an Echo 2 with a smaller band between the screens, etc.
What most people will never know is how incredibly misleading most of the reviews were. Not exactly untrue, but misleading.
For example, almost everyone panned the Echo's camera for being slow, producing under-saturated colors, only having a 2-1 zoom ratio, etc.
Truth is there is nothing wrong with the Echo's camera, hardware-wise it is the best phone camera I have ever used (and I used to shoot pictures for a living,) far better than a couple of HTC 8mp cameras I've tried.
What is horrible is Kyocera's implementation of the standard Android operating and color control system. It is just awful, even worse than HTC's (Samsung is pretty good with this), which I would have said was impossible.
Download a decent camera app from the Market and the Echo shines. Vignette, my current favorite, virtually eliminates the standard app's focusing and shutter delays, produces rich, sharp color correct images and offers a 10:1 zoom ratio.

I don't think it's possible without a custom recovery and there doesn't seem to be much hope with that.
The only way we would get some development on this would primarily be if a dev was given an Echo. All we need is a recovery and then we can move from there.

It just seems like there should be some way to backdoor into the root system via USB or tether and hijack every bit and byte on it onto a hard drive ... given Android's huge user base, you'd think some clever hacker would have already figured that out and posted the hack somewhere.

Humm....over 600 members in it's infancy...we have gingerbread root, recovery, themes, bootamimations, and many members wondering why xda has refused to make a Kyocera Echo section. It's not like there isn't any interest in the phone, it sold well, and even today your lucky to find one under 150$ on ebay.
Thanks to the developers who gave the echo the chance it hasn't gotten on here in xda.
Not hating, just saying...why? why isn't there a dedicated section for us Echo owners after all this time? Why ignore us after repeated request? I don't get it. It's a Great phone. My 1900+ benchmark matches or beats many phones listed on xda.
Dual-screens make for too big a challenge? A dedicated few don't think so.
I gave up my Evo 4g for this phone....Twice. There's just something about this phone I really like, eh?...
Personally I'd like to see what the big shots on xda could do with this phone. That's all we were hoping really...more Rom development.

I don't know why people aren't big into this phone either. Probably cause it wasn't a HUGE hit like all the others. Its gotta be all the "bad reviews" on the web. We tried emailing xda admins, talking to other devs, and just trying to get it noticed. I'm thinking some real reviews. You know? If anyone notices all the reviews on the web EVERYONE is still unrooted, on stock 2.2, and barely knows what the phone was MEANT to be used for, MULTITASKING!!!!!!! But now that here I am ranting about it, my brain just came up with this hopefully awesome, cool idea. We should make a real review. I'm not saying stock 2.3.4. Take my phone for example. Deodexed, themed, rooted, cmw based recovery, mods, Apps ported, super fast, scores on benchmark over 2000+, speed tests, and anything else. Its time. Time for some development on this nexgeneration dual-screen phone. It can and will be done! That is all.

VI agree this phone isn't done yet its super close to stock 2.3.4 which would make for decent ports we need up to date reviews and more publicity it worked with the lg thrill and optimus 3D hell go to other forums requesting PM developers who work with the N1 dInc and htc evo 4g they could all help us and all have cyanogenmod lets get this ball rolling what do u say guys?
Ps I've posted on a couple sites a way to root 2.3.4 super easy if that's your issue then you will be rooted soon

Build Kyocera Echo Stock ROM from source?
I don't know if anyone cares about this phone anymore, but I would like to build the stock ROM from source code and see where I can go from there.
I have AOSP android-2.3.4_r1 built (generic-eng) and running in emulator, and M9300_Gingerbread_kernel_code_2006.zip and M9300_Gingerbread_other_code.zip and Echo SDKs (v1.3 and v2.0) downloaded.
Where do I go from here? Anybody gotten any further?
Thank you, anyone who still likes this phone.

Have you made any progress? Do you still have any files related to the echo?
Hey I'm a noob, and I bought an LG Optimus 2x on Wind Mobile. I quite like the phone, but I am thinking about rooting and installing custom ROMs because it does have a few problems. I have a bunch of questions, and an answer to any of these questions would be great.
1. I have an LG Optimus 2X on Wind, and I keep reading that I have to install P999 ROMs (T-Mobile G2X ROMs) on my phone as opposed to O2X ROMs. Is this true?
2. If I root my phone and install a custom ROM, can the ENTIRE process be undone, to the point where my phone is back to how I got it out of the box?
3. What ROM should I use? MIUI, CM7 or something else? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each ROM?
4. How does Nandroid backup (or whatever the backup thingy is)work? Will my phone be exactly the same? Like exactly? Will my angry birds save files and my apps and tasks and contacts and call logs and everything transfer over to the new ROM? Will I be able to unroot/restore my phone to the point where everything (down to angry birds save files) is exactly the same?
5. What do I do if I brick my phone?
6. What's a kernel?
7. Where can I find a step by step process to installing a custom ROM, rooting my phone, etc.?
8. How do I overclock?
Thanks in advance guys, A reply would be much appreciated.

welcome first of all. you should have chosen another usrname, but whatever
you could have found everything, but i'll take 5mins to give you the basic answers
1. yeah, don't use O2x stuff, usually won't work. two different hardware sets
2. sort of, yes. but won't do it.
3. you should install cm7, miui, weapon and see the differences. they are the main ones
4. nandroid is a back-up of your system (i think of it as a your own custom rom, which is the way you left your system). when flashing from rom to rom, contacts, numbers are automatically saved, but you save them to your SIM card just in case. Angry birds scores are not kept. you can use titanium backup, which keeps the files for you.
5. if you brick it, you unbrick it. never happens if you follow instructions, though
6. kernel is the basis of the operating system. it sits on top of the hardware, and it lets your applications talk to your hardware. some are faster than others because they are more efficiently written - it has to do with code complexity and stuff you don't usually need to understand.
7. for my first time, i used theunlockr.com
Thanks a ton Aplsux. People like you who take the time to answer to questions as stupid as mine make the world a better place. Can you (or someone else) elaborate a little more on the whole undoing process (#2). Where can I find out more about titanium backup?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each ROM? I am into themes, and battery life and stability matter a lot to me.
Can you tell me anything about overclocking and undervolting?
Why have you copied my user name? I have been on XDA many years. I find this seriously annoying!!! I would appreciate it if you stop using this user name and pick another one.
hey J-Boxer, i can verify jboxer is one of the most distinguished members here, he posted his new rom recently and helps out a lot, it would be really nice before you get your post count or whatever to choose something else. not a rule, but just a nice thing to do. after all, forums like these make android the best supported system in terms of technical support and customization. people like him, with their contributions, make the world better, not lazyass people like me who give you half answers
i cannot elaborate on unbricking, because in my extensive roming, i have never ever bricked it. i've also never had to help anyone to unbrick it. all i remember, there was one thread in the q&a section, which told you how to unbrick it. chances are, you don't have to worry about it. the worse thing i've seen is fixable with a battery pull.
i cannot also comment on titanium back - i dont have games. but you know, folders and files in them, are not touched by the rom flashing.
roms are different, and you should really use them because it depends on the person. what i can say is that i've gotten the most battery out of MIUI and wepon3. most stability from weapon and cm7. miui has a few force closes, for me - also, parts of miui remind me of iOS.
i've stayed out of overclocking and underclocking, just my choice. in practice, chips are manufactured in a way to work at 1.0GHz lets say. But due to random process variables connected to transistor layouts, parasitic capacitances, resistor mismatches, all 1.0GHz chips actually can work at 0.8GHz and some at 1.2GHz. the manufacturer downclocks them, so that all can be sold as 0.8GHz, so no instability occurs. (or at least that's what we're told at school) SOOOO, to make a long story short, overclocking voids that limit set by the manufacturer of the chip. your stuff operates faster, but since the rest of the software and electronics are made for the manufacturer's frequency, a little more battery is used, and software sometimes it becomes unstable.
the g2x, everything is blazing fast, no need to overclock. but custom roms definitely give you more battery than whatever came from WIND. and it's more than 2.2.x - for instance, they made a wireless network at school, where the mobile device logs itself automatically, but you need at least 2.3.x.
i suggest you install clockwork, put a few different roms, and try them out. it's fun learning a new interface
miui is very easy to theme it yourself - just edit the mtz files. i know cm7 has a theme changer, but i dnot know how easy it is to change the themes there - but you can defiantely donwload lots. but for both, there are lots of themes you can donwload - this is what i love the most about linux.
these are the ones i've used, and found decent:
miui http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158037
cm7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108201

People might get us confused. I post here frequently and, no offense to you, I would not want people getting confused that your posts are from me. I understand you didn't copy it on purpose, but I think maybe it is better if you can change it. I don't think you can edit your user name, but maybe a moderator can do it for you? I think the only way would be to create a new account and that would require a different email address also. Up to you.
Just want to root
Sorry to cut into this thread, but my problem is basically directly related. but I have just purchased the same phone (LG Optimus 2x, Wind Mobile). The OS is 2.2.2
Now I am basically a noob. I don't want any custom ROMs. I just want to have root access to my phone, and to be easily able to unroot if need be.
I looked online and found a video tutorial for Super One Click. I followed all the instructions. Installed drivers first, then super one click. Enabled USB debugging mode and did NOT load the SD card. When I run Super One Click and click Driver Check, it says everything is good. But then when I click Root, it freezes on the "waiting for device..." step.
Anything I might be doing wrong? The only thing I can think of is that I have not installed a SIM card or a SD card in my phone yet. Does that make a difference?
Is there any other way I can do this with a different program? Any help would be great, Thanks.
Fixed it
Never mind, I just figured it out. The problem was my phone drivers were being corrupted by my aggressive antivirus, thus the adb was not installed properly. If you disable antivirus before installing the phone drivers and the Super One Click program, and only reenable it after you complete the root, you should be golden! I have now rooted my phone and I'm ecstatic!
What antivirus were you using?

Before doing any kind of flashing you should always disable any antivirus programs and turn off your firewall on your computer. Not doing so can result in bricked devices. You are lucky you got off easy; but the 2X/G2x devices are very difficult to hard brick.
Two weeks into my new phone and loving it, but now on to some important questions. Some may have been answered before but not all on the same thread. So I'm here to ask. Please don't flame as a nooby to the SG3 scene and rooting THIS phone. Want to keep things simple and all functions WORKING most importantly
1. Should the standard phone guy. by that I mean not wifi tethering etc feel the need to Root his/her phone. Only real win win situation I see as of now is being able to delete bloat ware. But is it worth that on the S3?
2. If you root the phone I'm assuming you may lose some of it's motion controls. Camera features. Jelly Bean is nice but it's coming. Wait and get the real deal or root and take your chances? I just think personally the early gain doesn't quite outweigh the chances of losing something important.
3.On another point roms do add more functionality in areas that some don't. The reason I'm here posting this in the first place is because of paranoid android rom. The option to go hybrid tablet/phone is simply awesome especially on this phone would be reason enough to try it out. Question being I seen VZW EZ Unlocker (Recovery app as well). Which is great but you still have to root your phone correct?
4. Also If I decide to unroot my phone and go back to completely stock is this a SIMPLE viable solution on the VZW sg3? I have rooted my droid and thunderbolt in the past but really wasn't pleased with rom options at all on the thunderbolt. More issues then anything else.
5. Now I have a shiny pretty slim s3 and i'm wanting to make it the best thing possible but not trying to deal with any types of issues. Want it to work flawlessly..(no wifi connection issues/data/signal/force closes.

If your phone works exactly how you want stock, there's absolutely no reason to mess with a good thing. It's only worth it if you like dealing with any potential issues that accompany rooting/flashing, etc. I rooted my GSIII and just added a few apps (Recovery as well). I don't have a need for anything else.

You are confusing "rooting" with "flashing." If you simply just root the GSIII, you're still on stock Touchwiz but now you have root access so you CAN modify system files if you want. If you just root, everything you had set up will be exactly the same and working just the same. If you flash a rom/kernel/mod, this is when you may or may not lose features. You know the risks going in with everything you flash so this is a personal choice. Not everyone is comfortable with losing features of a device they purchased.

Correct, you root the phone to have root access like I described above then you can unlock the bootloader if you desire. Either use EZ Unlock app or use AdamOutler's Casual tool to unlock your device, again each step is your choice. You accept the consequences.

Yes, there are a few guides/methods to unroot. I am posting this comment using my phone so I can't provide a direct link. Go into the Development Section of this forum and check out DroidStyle's guide. I believe Section 6 of that guide has the steps to unroot. 5. Now I have a shiny pretty slim s3 and i'm wanting to make it the best thing possible but not trying to deal with any types of issues. Want it to work flawlessly..(no wifi connection issues/data/signal/force closes.

The choice is yours my friend. Like I posted earlier, I rooted just for a few apps (titanium Backup, Adfree for example) and I wanted to do so while there were still exploits working before I received any OTA. Lastly, if you root I suggest you immediately backup your IMEI. If you don't know what this is, there are a couple threads that you should read in the development section that describe in detail what you need to do, why you need to do this, and anything else.

2. If you root the phone I'm assuming you may lose some of it's motion controls. Camera features. Jelly Bean is nice but it's coming. Wait and get the real deal or root and take your chances? I just think personally the early gain doesn't quite outweigh the chances of losing something important.

if you run a touchwiz rom (like synergy) i believe you will maintain the nice features like s-beam and motion controls. also because you can run a new kernel i've found that i am getting a few more hours of battery life and more smoothness running the Rom.
being able to use Google Wallet and AdFree are just added perks!

running synergy and i can confirm that i still am able to use direct call and smart alert.
I like you found nothing wrong with the phone other than a lot of bloatware but I want the ability to change anything and everything just because even if they work fine. And rooting this device is so much easier than any device I've ever had there was no point not to.

I have a lot of questions. I know the rules here and I already search different things like custom rom/kernel.but when I saw the busybox, terminal emulator, supercharge etc. I felt like my mind was going to explode. LOL!!
So now as a newbie, I dont know where to start, I can search for a specific stufff and follow the steps like having a custom roms/kernels. but I need some advise what should I do first. Like, do I need to have a custom rom/mod first and then do some enhancement later?
I already root my phone and I already made the back up using cm recovery.
offcourse Im still using stock rom/kernel.
And lastly I dont have a laptop/computer. So for the links/files/attachments Im just using this phone to download those stuff.
So Im hoping that someone can give me a headstart. Thanks
You can use mods with rooted stock ROM and kernel but upto a limit. For example you cannot overclock your CPU but can control its frequency within the limits.
I would suggest you to go for a CyanogenMod ROM. It will give you more customization options than you'll need included in the ROM itself.

ok so mod is for customization right? like I can updgrade my OS to ICS?
actually my goal here is for me to play the games which are not compatible on my phone. like Inotia 4 etc.
Im just wondering why those games are not cpmpatible. Is it because of my OS? which is Gingerbread?
And what is OverClock? you said its for the CPU stuff so that means it could increase the speed of my phone right?
By the way, everytime we reply or make some msg we really need to input these "Captcha"?
There may be many reasons why a game/application is not compatible with your phone, may be because of your phone's hardware configuration or even just because of the dpi (dots per inch - in simple words how big everything appears on your display) of your device.
Yes overclocking means increasing your processors speed above the rated (allowed) value. Its not so safe though, may make your device unstable or even damage it permanently.
Yes for a junior member there are these irritating restrictions.

Ok now I got it..
Alright so I think it's already on my phone. The screen was too small so maybe even if I use ChainFire 3D it won't help haha.
And even if I change my Mod/Kernel it won't help me. I watch the videos of CM7/CM9 and there's a lot of bugs.
So I think the best way is to buy a different phone that will give me good specs. LOL
But I still have a question, is there a way to improve our wifi connection for the phone? like using root or something?
because even if I have a better phone I still need to have a good wifi connection. Im currently using 1mbps haha.
Im searching for some apps in the market but I can't trust those apps. Do you have any suggestion to improve internet speed?
Thanks in advance man!

First and foremost
1. Read all posts in a thread make own judgement. No ready reckoners here.
2. In your case try restoring cwm backup first then do all sorts of things.
3. Dont get carried away by threads. Many are experienced so not all posts will have basic details.
Eg: Take backup of your EFS partition that contains your IMEI using galaxytoolbox app from playstore. This is not mentioned as pre requisite to ROM flashing.
Loosing imei is like losing phone. Finally its a phone and not playstation.
Get galaxy grand for gaming. I see.myvfriend immersed in temple run and aeroplane pilotting.
I can suggest dr driving raging thunder 2 for sgy with good 3d graphics. You have lot of options in gaming too.
Remember "All that glitters are not gold".
We friends are here to help see you already got so many responses lucky fellow.
Pressing THANKS easier than typing.
