Will sunshine stick with OTA to latest 4.4.4? - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Title says it all. On 4.4 now, rooted, wp-off, unlocked. If I took the ota to the latest 4.4.4, will wp-off be retained? I'm fine with losing root as long as I can fastboot twrp and root that way. Wp off is my main question.

Dude I already answered this same question last night. I understand that you're apprehensive about losing root but damn! Kinda like saying that you don't believe me! Which is fine. But don't ask questions if you're not gonna believe the answer. Research it yourself in that case

Sorry bud, nothing personal. I appreciate your input, I really do. You're spot on, OTA's make me nervous. Not a lot of info I could find just googling so I figured I'd crowd surf one last time to see if a second party could confirm. Haha, it's me being paranoid rather than not believing you.

Yes.
I used Sunshine on 4.4 (rooted), then FXZ'd to 4.4.4 and had to manually flash TWRP and then eventually root by flashing SU.

Cool, thanks for the replies. My OTA kept failing even with disabling all my root apps, Xposed, etc. I just used RSD lite with the latest .24 update, flashed TWRP, and rooted it, all good. Was very simple, so if anyone else is doing this and nervous about OTA's like myself, there's really no need to even use them if you don't want.

Just got my droid mini last night. Updated to 23.3.24 ota.
Sorry if this has been answered before but I'm wondering if its too late to apply the subshine method or will it work fine?

[Q] Rooted but not unlocked

I rooted my device using an app from an old guide long ago. I am still on stock with no custom recovery or rom so basically rooted factory ice cream sandwich. I did one Asus update and used ota root keeper to keep root. Now Asus has pushed me the jellybean update envied I'm not sure the best way to go about rooting and such. The only caveat is I might sell and not sure if I want to unlock the boot loader or not. Should I? And if so which guide do I follow? Thanks all.

Yes probably long ago. But searching through hundreds of pages would do me no good. I am just unsure of what to do in this situation. Which I havent seen others in. Merry Christmas to you too bud
Also, nice going with the "I'm gonna have an attitude but say something seemingly nice at the end" post. Very original of you.
So how about this, should I just unroot with the same tool I used and follow one of the guides to unlock and root with custom recovery and rom? I am on 4.0.3 as of now. Thanks

Right from the get-go. Regardless...
Ensure superuser binary current.
Having ES File Explorer or another like app is a nice-to-have. Keeps system mounted as r/w if you need to get to system/bin.
You already know about OTA Rootkeeper. 100% stock required. Temp unroot.
Apply OTA updates. Reenable root with OTA Rootkeeper. Do NOT manually apply updates - you WILL lose root.
That is the process. Go back to the beginning and work your way forward to find all of the posts. You will see what worked and where people messed up. Don't take my word for it - it's out there.

So what about if I want recovery and roms?
Unlock is your only option.

Ok so I should just unroot with this app and then follow one of the guides?

As in stock rooted with unlocked bootloader and custom recovery? Or stock as in using OTA rootkeeper and updating?
I am stock, locked and rooted. I am not your guide to go unlocked and custom roms.

Ok well if I go stock, locked, and rooted, will I be able to go unlocked, custom recovery and custom rom later? As in if I update to JB then want to go unlocked later?
If, and I mean if, the asus boot unlocker works for you. does not for a lot of people. appears to be a serial# issue at asus. if you can unlock you can do anything you want - jb or ics.

[Q] Ok to update after bootloader unlock and root?

Hey all,
Now that I have my phone rooted and unlocked, is it ok if I accept and install the latest OTA update? Is there any additional steps I need to take before or after?
use voodoo from the market to protect root and temp unroot while updating. also you have to be stock, with all the bloat apps installed and not frozen, or the update will fail.
ultimately the update will likely fail at the end anyways, but as long as it updates the baseband, that's all you really want out of it anyways.
Ok thanks. I will give it a try. Sounds like it will probably fail. LoL

i have taken the update about a dozen times no problem, and didn't loose root one time.
matts utility reverts to before the update (including the baseband), so there is really no danger as long as you are already unlocked.

Well I really hope that what someone told me in the past that jcase would have an exploit by the Summer, is true. Because I accidently bricked my phone months ago and screwed me back to 4.4 KiKat non-rooted. I just hope someone out there is working on finding another exploit.

Probably the someone. I know it was just a tweet, so maybe he was joking, but jcase tweeted about a month ago that he will no longer be providing anybody with any *unpatched* exploits. Based on the way people complain about him not "sharing" any exploits he has, I don't blame him. Anyway, I'd pin my hopes on somebody else.
Or, better yet, put the phone up on Swappa or something and go out and buy a developer edition of something, because that's your surest bet that you'll be able to root a phone going forward.

So your saying jcase probably has an exploit or two but he just doesn't want to release it to the public? Lol. That's messed up! I guess its just a waiting game until somebody else out there puts out an exploit for us non-rooters to use. *sigh* :/
P.S. : What do you mean you don't blame him???

I didn't say he had any exploits. I reported what he tweeted: he will not share any unpatched exploits. That means, I am pretty sure, that if he has any exploits (for any phones), he will wait until they are patched with an update before he shares it publicly, if he shares it at all, making it rather useless for somebody looking to root the phone with the exploit.
Here is the tweet: https://twitter.com/TeamAndIRC/status/460157450318929920
I am pretty sure it was in reference to a non-Moto device, but I'm sure he means the same for any device.
OK, here's a perfect example. Read this whole Twitter conversation between Jcase and some tool who thinks he's entitled to a root exploit.
https://mobile.twitter.com/spc_hicks09/status/473484675562749952
This topic of Jcase having an exploit had been covered many times if not mistaken. Is this helpful to the OP to keep hashing this out.

Hey, look, because of the 4.4.3 update, Jcase ended up releasing the root exploit after all. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53129908&postcount=248

[Q] OTA 186.43.15 Let's Lay This Question To Rest...

...As I'm sure many others like me will visit this forum, read guide disclaimers, and still ask themselves "is it really true??"
If we accept the latest OTA (186.43.15) WITHOUT unlocking the bootloader, we are screwed. There is absolutely, positively, nothing that can be done (hacking, version rollback, etc.) with the phone forever. The bootloader has been locked and we're stuck with what we've got. No way to unlock it now.
So, is it really true? Please say it ain't so.
Yes, it is true, at least with the Motopocalypse method. There are other ways to bootloader unlock phones such as Sunshine, but I think that only supports newer Motorola devices.
http://theroot.ninja/
Also, you have to be rooted. If Towelroot doesn't work on the latest OTA (no idea if it does or not) then you'd have to wait for a new exploit.
Thanks for the reply.
What's most frustrating about this is that I knew it was coming, I knew the bootloader was going to be locked by the next OTA but I was too nervous to unlock the bootloader and possibly brick my wifes phone in the process. She would be pissed.
The system update notifier kept bugging her and I kept telling her to not to do it and eventually she just she went ahead with it. Ugh.

Forget another bootloader unlock exploit. That was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. As for root, well, there might be, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Of course, that's what we all said when the first KK OTA came out and look what they gave us - Towelroot AND bootloader unlock, but the bootloader unlock was a mistake - they accidentally reverted part of the code back to the original exploit code. So, that was a mistake on Moto's part.
But, this latest OTA is the last OTA for this phone. No more updates from Moto so don't expect the bootloader exploit to show up again.

That's what I was afraid of. Same thing happened on my Droid X once updated to the last build of 2.3.4
I guess the bottom line is this: I don't care that much about the final KK build as much as I care about wifi hotspot tethering. That's really what I'm after. After her phone was updated to KK from JB it killed the tethering app that we were using. So my only recourse was to flash the phone back to JB. But I just didn't have the time to mess with it, plus it's my wife's phone and I didn't want to risk bricking it.
Near as I can tell, after quite a bit of searching, I don't have any way to fix tethering with this latest build. I'll ask the question in the Q&A section.

Exactly what version of KK is she on? If she's still on 183.46.10, then that allows the bootloader to be unlocked which will then allow you to root it and then apply a tethering hack.
If, however, you are on 183.46.14 or 183.46.15, then yes, you are hosed and cannot revert back to 183.46.10 or JB.

She actually hasn't been happy with her XT926, so I think I might just buy a used phone of the same generation and mod it. If successful, we'll just swap the hacked one onto her account. I'm thinking Galaxy S3? I'd be curious to know what the "most hackable" phone of that generation is (JB or early KK)? Or should I post that question in the XDA General? I've searched and haven't found that question asked.

Update to 5.1?

Hi everyone,
I know I am going to sound very annoying but I have googled various threads for hours and I still have not come close to an answer, so please be easy on me. I am a total noob!
So basically, Long story short, I bought this Moto G 2015 (4th Gen - Xt1072 the 5inch screen one) earlier this year, and it has been very slow ever since! So now, I am getting notifications that I cant update to 5.1!
The issue is, my phone is rooted, and I would like it to remain rooted! So, I am assuming i will not be able to install the update file.
The real question I have is, how do I go about this? How do i update to 5.1 (22.46.12.en.GB) without losing my root? I am happy with backing it all up on Titanium, and then updating but I don't know how to do it. Do I have to download the new android on my laptop and then re-install it or something? All this technical talk is literally racking my brain!
I know the solution is probably simple so I would really appreciate if someone can give me a simple answer!
Thanks so much

You can follow this link for a tool to restore back to stock firmware. This will wipe your phone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...dows-tool-moto-g-2015-xt1072-restore-t3124915
Then update after that and root again.
