[Q] Ok to update after bootloader unlock and root? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Now that I have my phone rooted and unlocked, is it ok if I accept and install the latest OTA update? Is there any additional steps I need to take before or after?

use voodoo from the market to protect root and temp unroot while updating. also you have to be stock, with all the bloat apps installed and not frozen, or the update will fail.
ultimately the update will likely fail at the end anyways, but as long as it updates the baseband, that's all you really want out of it anyways.

Ok thanks. I will give it a try. Sounds like it will probably fail. LoL

i have taken the update about a dozen times no problem, and didn't loose root one time.
matts utility reverts to before the update (including the baseband), so there is really no danger as long as you are already unlocked.

[PSA] There's an OTA coming and it COULD be bad for us

It seems AT&T is pushing out an OTA version 2.20 that is rumored to close all the loopholes we've used to unlock and root the One X.
If you have NOT rooted and unlocked your bootloader and you want to do so don't accept the update.
Wait until someone has gotten a hold of this version and picked it apart before installing it.
Keep Calm and Carry On.

Even if you are rooted and unlocked BL, don't accept the OTA, unless you are brave and feel like being the guinea pig (I guess somebody has to be). The install may not work, or it may wipe out root, and the existing root methods may have been plugged up. OTA Rootkeeper might work. It did for the last OTA, but there is no guarantee that it will work this time. Somebody will probably post this as a recovery flashable zip in pre-rooted form. So be patient, unless you feel like experimenting, and living with the consequences.
Thanks for the public service announcement, as I'm sure people will start asking whether its safe to install the OTA.
I figured people who rooted would know this but thank you for adding it.

Or how many people unroot just so they can get an OTA that will provide very little added performance if any. People are sooooo quick to accept OTAs when they have no clue what they are for. I can understand wanting to accept an OTA for a major OS update like ICS to JB (ok that was a lie, I still have no clue why people would rather accept an OTA than just flash a rooted ROM) but to give up root for a simple MR is just asinine.

Something like this should go without saying. Any xda member that's foolhardy enough to download an ota without knowing the consequences, probably doesn't belong here in the first place.

Interesting that this wasn't leaked, and this is the first news we got of this new version. AT&T must be upgrading its internal security.

If I'm not mistaken, the exploit uses the AT&T update server to trick the phone into download mode, so I don't think this could work.

Looks like a Verizon S3 ota update is imminent

Nothing too earth shattering if you read the official statement from Verizon, but may have a fix for those with SIM troubles.

right, the safest way to update is to restore back to stock, stock kernel, and DEFINITELY re-lock your bootloader if you have it unlocked.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. Not while rooted....Can brick your phone I heard.
Do not update if u are rooted.
Well if you can't update while rooted, what are you supposed to do if it auto updates? I was just sitting in bed and noticed that my notification went off on my phone and not on my tablet (meaning not email). I checked the phone and if I hadn't noticed it would have auto updated and I am rooted on stock. It said the update would start in 3 minutes after I heard the notification. I deferred until tomorrow and have my phone how I want it, so I really don't want to go back to stock. I suppose I could make a nandroid.
It really scares me though that Verizon almost pushed an update that could have potentially bricked my phone. I don't think that is right, quite honestly.

[Q] Verizon S3 SCH-i535 JSS15J.VRUCNC1 How to Root?

Hey Guys,
going nuts over here... Tried odin method to flash NasirTech's CF_AutoRoot, it failed with "Auth Failed" on Odin. Tried cubeuncube's saferoot, that also failed saying my kernel has been patched. Can someone please point me in the right direction on how to get root on my device?
Thanks,
From what I have read you need to odin back to the previous release (ML1 I believe). Current rooting approaches do not work on NC1. You should also be posting this in the questions forum, not in general...

Ummm I wouldn't use an unreliable link. Just my personal opinion. You will hard brick if you attempt to flash anything other than a TW rom on the ML1 modem/rom. You have to flash back to ML1 from NC1 using Odin.

[Q] keep root for 19.6.3 ota?

I have a rooted Verizon droid maxx. I am really worried about losing root if I take the ota. Is there any safe way to take the ota without losing my root? I've read like 2 posts of people saying the pro version of supersu and Survival mode keeps root. I've also read 1 post saying that they accidently took it and didn't lose root. Can anyone confirm this?
I would like to know the answer to this as well. I was just prompted for this update.

Considering that you cannot downgrade to a exploitable version of android if it doesn't work, I think I will pass.
Here is a guy that did it and said he keep root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52763259
I believe the one that did it accidentally had an unlocked boot loader which makes root possible no matter what.
I saw another post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52795898
Saying that the biggest part of the update was the radio which can be flashed without taking the whole upgrade if you are worried about it.
Me personally, my BL is unlocked and I'm going back to 4.2. I've seen nothing but negatives (bad battery life, FC's, etc) with the updates. I might would stick it out if there was some new features but they seem like just more of the same.

Maybe I'm brain dead. I thought I had TWRP on these phones after SlapMyMoto, but I guess it retained the stock recovery.
Too many Android devlices... can't keep track of what's running what.
I thought the big issue was not retaining root, but completely losing the Write-Protection off ability (ie ability to use xposed). I'm locked bootloader and don't see a reason to unlock.

[Q] OTA 186.43.15 Let's Lay This Question To Rest...

...As I'm sure many others like me will visit this forum, read guide disclaimers, and still ask themselves "is it really true??"
If we accept the latest OTA (186.43.15) WITHOUT unlocking the bootloader, we are screwed. There is absolutely, positively, nothing that can be done (hacking, version rollback, etc.) with the phone forever. The bootloader has been locked and we're stuck with what we've got. No way to unlock it now.
So, is it really true? Please say it ain't so.
Yes, it is true, at least with the Motopocalypse method. There are other ways to bootloader unlock phones such as Sunshine, but I think that only supports newer Motorola devices.
http://theroot.ninja/
Also, you have to be rooted. If Towelroot doesn't work on the latest OTA (no idea if it does or not) then you'd have to wait for a new exploit.
Thanks for the reply.
What's most frustrating about this is that I knew it was coming, I knew the bootloader was going to be locked by the next OTA but I was too nervous to unlock the bootloader and possibly brick my wifes phone in the process. She would be pissed.
The system update notifier kept bugging her and I kept telling her to not to do it and eventually she just she went ahead with it. Ugh.

Forget another bootloader unlock exploit. That was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. As for root, well, there might be, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Of course, that's what we all said when the first KK OTA came out and look what they gave us - Towelroot AND bootloader unlock, but the bootloader unlock was a mistake - they accidentally reverted part of the code back to the original exploit code. So, that was a mistake on Moto's part.
But, this latest OTA is the last OTA for this phone. No more updates from Moto so don't expect the bootloader exploit to show up again.

That's what I was afraid of. Same thing happened on my Droid X once updated to the last build of 2.3.4
I guess the bottom line is this: I don't care that much about the final KK build as much as I care about wifi hotspot tethering. That's really what I'm after. After her phone was updated to KK from JB it killed the tethering app that we were using. So my only recourse was to flash the phone back to JB. But I just didn't have the time to mess with it, plus it's my wife's phone and I didn't want to risk bricking it.
Near as I can tell, after quite a bit of searching, I don't have any way to fix tethering with this latest build. I'll ask the question in the Q&A section.

Near as I can tell, after quite a bit of searching, I don't have any way to fix tethering with this latest build. I'll ask the question in the Q&A section.

Exactly what version of KK is she on? If she's still on 183.46.10, then that allows the bootloader to be unlocked which will then allow you to root it and then apply a tethering hack.
If, however, you are on 183.46.14 or 183.46.15, then yes, you are hosed and cannot revert back to 183.46.10 or JB.

She has 183.46.15. Only option at this point is to exchange it for a used one that hasn't been updated...

Yup. That's unfortunate. Just wanted to make sure.

That's what I was afraid of. Same thing happened on my Droid X once updated to the last build of 2.3.4
I guess the bottom line is this: I don't care that much about the final KK build as much as I care about wifi hotspot tethering. That's really what I'm after. She actually hasn't been happy with her XT926, so I think I might just buy a used phone of the same generation and mod it. If successful, we'll just swap the hacked one onto her account. I'm thinking Galaxy S3? I'd be curious to know what the "most hackable" phone of that generation is (JB or early KK)? Or should I post that question in the XDA General? I've searched and haven't found that question asked.
Damn :/ I just bought RAZR MAXX HD on ebay and I was sure there will be no problems with unlocking and rooting the phone. But the system version is 183.46.15 :/
Anyone in Poland wants to buy a RAZR MAXX HD?

Did you boot it into fastboot mode and ensure whether it's already been unlocked or not? You might get lucky if they already unlocked it.
I've checked it - it is locked :/
